From the Headmaster Dear Friends of Xaverian,

Since taking over as headmaster of Xaverian Brothers High School in 1991, countless administrators, teachers, students, alumni, parents, and board members have inspired me, been counted as friends and confidants, given me faith and hope, and cemented for me that Xaverian Brothers is a uniquely special place to work and serve. This magazine pays tribute to a few of those people, namely Brother Raymond Hoyt, C.F.X. ’70. Over the years, Xaverian has been home to many a phenomenal teacher and administrator. However, Brother Ray is unsurpassed in his dedication to the young

men at Xaverian. He remembers each of the thousands of boys who passed through our halls during his 23-year tenure; and they all remember him. A special thank you to every donor who gave to the Brother Raymond Hoyt, C.F.X. ’70 Scholarship Fund. Even though Brother Ray no longer walks among our halls, generations of boys will now be able to attend Xaverian Brothers in his name and honor.

Every institution like Xaverian needs someone to remind us how big and deep our mission is meant to be. How blessed we are to have had Rick Spillane ’68 as our board chair for the past 12 years. The evolution of the school under his leadership is astounding when considering the quality of programs and facilities that help define Xaverian today as an exceptional school. Even more, he always cared about the well-being of every member of the community. Read more about the scholarship fund established by the Board of Trustees to honor Rick and his wife Joanne for their tireless support and fidelity to our mission.

In this issue, we highlight some of the incredible accomplishments of our students, such as Charles Downey III ’19, who spent April vacation sailing the open seas aboard the Oliver Hazard Perry; Nick Guadagno ’17, who was highlighted by the Boston Globe for his photography; and Henry Bruckner ’17, who had the opportunity to play with Boston Bruins legends in honor of fellow Xaverian alumni, the late Army Sgt. Adam Kennedy ’00. You’ll also learn about our charter class, the Class of 1967, as well as the Class of 2017. Plus, read about our innovative teaching methods to encourage active learning in our all-boys environment.

to the Class of 2017, Xaverian Brothers High School valedictorians have stood out for their academic achievements and leadership. Richard Czaja ’67 went on to graduate from Yale University. He is the Vice Chair of Xaverian’s Board of Trustees and Co-President of The Stahl Organization, a real estate development firm located in New York City.

Hariharan Shanmugam ’17 earned a full scholarship to Boston College, where he plans to be a pre-med major. Read more about the classes of 1967 (page 2) and 2017 (page 4) in this magazine.

CLASS OF 1967 – XAVERIAN’S CHARTER CLASS

Celebrating 50 Years

W

ith matching blue Xaverian 50th reunion ties fluttering in the brisk wind, 41 members of the Class of 1967 processed onto Varsity Field through the tunnel of cheering faculty. They led the way for the Class of 2017 to enter, just as they paved the way for all Xaverian graduates as the school’s charter class. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the commencement of the Class of 1967, Xaverian Brothers High School’s first graduating class.

It may have been 50 years ago, but the Class of 1967 did not leave Xaverian behind them. Instead, they have helped carry Xaverian into the present day and solidify its presence for the future. Two members of the Class of 1967 went on to become teachers at Xaverian and continue to this day, Denis Smith ’67 and Philip Penza ’67. Six members of the class have generously served on Xaverian’s Board of Trustees. One, David Wiggin C.F.X. ’67, became a Xaverian Brother. Sixteen sent their own sons to Xaverian, and 106 members have made gifts in support of Xaverian’s mission.

In addition to making an impact on the Xaverian community, Class of 1967 alumni went on to become attorneys, entrepreneurs, priests, pilots, firefighters, engineers, teachers, physicians, and much more, including loving husbands, fathers, and grandfathers. To celebrate their 50th anniversary, the Class of 1967, guided by their reunion committee, planned a weekend of events at Xaverian Brothers High School. They participated in the graduation exercises on May 19 and were recognized by Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X., Headmaster, with gratitude for all that they have given to Xaverian and to the world beyond Clapboardtree Street.

Though the campus has greatly changed, the traditions of the school harken back to this charter class. Even the Hawk mascot is owing to the Class of 1967, though they joke that they really wanted to be the “Xaverian Barbarians,” (which was quickly vetoed by the administration). The reunion served

as an opportunity for sharing memories like these. A cocktail hour and dinner reception in the Sarah M. Bisson Foyer was punctuated with bouts of laughter and cheers of agreement, as Joe Lang ’67 led the class down memory lane. Ned Kennedy ’67, a member of the reunion committee and Xaverian’s Board of Trustees, proudly presented Brother Dan with a check for $185,390 in the name of Brother Paul Feeney (Antoninus), C.F.X. The Class of 1967 reunion gift was made to honor Brother Paul, who was in attendance at the reunion, to

commemorate his tireless leadership as Xaverian’s first assistant principal.

A plaque in Brother Paul’s honor will hang in the Josephine M. Noble Chapel upon completion of this summer’s renovation project.

On the following morning, the ’67 classmates returned for a Mass with Father Charlie Higgins ’67, followed by a tour of the campus, and finished out their festvities with a hearty brunch.

ommencement exercises for Xaverian Brothers High School’s 51st graduating class, the Class of 2017, were held on Friday, May 19. The ceremony took place on Xaverian’s Varsity Field at 6:00 p.m. Headmaster Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X. conferred diplomas to 174 graduating seniors, as well as academic medals.

In his remarks to the senior class, Brother Dan offered encouragement and challenge: “With your Xaverian education, you have become empowered to go forth, to find your mission, to be compassionate leaders who offer mercy and healing love to all men and women, especially those on the margins of our world. Though the challenges are great and you may feel unprepared, God does not leave you alone. God sends you people who will support you just as He has through your time at Xaverian. You might be the few in your generation who will make all the difference in the world.”

Xaverian’s Class of 2017 Valedictorian, Hariharan (Harry) Shanmugam, is president of the Xaverian chapter of the National Honor Society and a member of the National Spanish Honor Society. He served as captain of the Speech and Debate Team, community outreach director of the Young Men for Change group, editor-in-chief for the school’s literary magazine, The Concordian, and captain of the Model UN club. Harry was awarded six academic medals during commencement.

Award recipients are selected by the faculty, based on their grades and performance. Harry’s six Gold Medals were for excellence in theology, English, mathematics, world languages, science, and social studies. He is a National Merit Finalist. Harry will attend Boston College.

In his Valedictory address, Harry spoke about finding one’s true calling and pursuing it with passion: “The breadth and depth of talent in this class is amazing, and I am confident that an integral part of our calling is to share that light with others. Whether it be as a father coaching your son’s little league game, as a police officer serving your local community, as a doctor saving lives around the world, or in any other manner your calling presents itself, I am confident that we will all find a way to use the light within and set the world aflame. And armed with our education and our experiences, as we all do our part with our own, unique calling, we will have brought Xaverian to the world.”

2017 Salutatorian, Jackson Kelley, is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Chinese Honor Society. He was a championship member of the Speech and Debate team. Jackson was also the director of the Young Men for Change club, and a Spirit Hawk leader in the Campus Ministry program. In addition to the Salutatorian medal Jackson was awarded at graduation, he was also given the Loyalty and Service Award for his generous and focused service to the community. Jackson chose to use his Salutatorian address to talk about a question he was posed as a freshman - “what makes Xaverian unique?” He learned the answer is the brotherhood between the students, the sincere concern for each and every member of the community, and the uniquely vested interest that the teachers have in their students. Jackson will be attending Vanderbilt University.

Each year, the members of the graduating class and faculty nominate a senior for the Xaverian Award, the highest honor bestowed. This year’s Xaverian Award winner was Timothy Simoes. The Xaverian Medal is a recognition of the unique contributions of a graduating senior, which speak to the mission and core values of a Xaverian Brothers education.

According to Brother Dan, Timothy is “an exceptional young man, a person of integrity, and humility, a true leader who makes real and apparent the values and spirit of Xaverian. A scholar, an athlete, a peer mentor, and tutor, he is a superb role model who makes others feel welcome and important. He inspires all of us to live by the highest ideals of a Xaverian education.”

Timothy will attend the United States Military Academy.

“Throughout our history, Xaverian has attracted talented young men like those in the Class of 1967 and the Class of 2017,” concluded Brother Dan. “Graduates, as you leave Xaverian, I hope you carry a deep appreciation of the values and traditions that are everlasting, as well as a willingness to be bold and to approach whatever challenges you face with fresh perspectives. Graduates and members of the Class of 1967, I can promise you two things. First, you will always be in our prayers here at Xaverian. And, second, wherever your path leads, you will always have a home at Xaverian and always be welcome here.”

Honoring Brother Raymond Hoyt, C.F.X. ’70 How have the students changed over the years?

Over my many years in our schools, I drew the conclusion: all boys 13-18 are the same. They are all on the roller coaster ride of adolescence, trying to find themselves and relating to others. I never saw a big difference in my 40 years of teaching. Teenage boys act very similar, and they need guides and listening ears to help them. Only history and gadgets change.

What has been your favorite course to teach over the years?

I really don’t have a favorite class to teach. I enjoy teaching as long as I am prepared. I guess it was quite enjoyable to teach French. For most of my career, I taught Honors English and enjoyed it as well.

rother Raymond Hoyt, C.F.X. ’70 entered Xaverian as a freshman in 1966. Little did he know, he would end up spending much of his life here as a teacher, administrator, and friend to all who met him. After teaching at various Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools, Brother Ray returned to Xaverian in 1992 at the request of Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X. to serve as teacher and assistant principal for academics.

Brother Ray retired this spring, but his legacy will continue to shine brightly.

At the 21st annual Gala on March 18, Brother Ray was awarded Xaverian’s highest honor — the Xaverian Medal. “Your presence tonight, all 750+ of you, is an affirmation and great tribute to Brother Raymond, explained Headmaster Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X. in his opening remarks.

“His ministry among us for 23 years is especially inspiring and deserving of our gratitude.” In a particularly poignant show of gratitude, the Brother Raymond Hoyt, C.F.X. ’70 Scholarship Fund was established with an initial anonymous gift of $50,000. The total funds raised at the time of publication are nearly a half million dollars. In addition to the scholarship, the school’s varsity stadium press box has been named in Brother Ray’s honor.

Chuck Carmone ‘85, P ‘16, director of alumni, interviewed Brother Ray before his retirement. Here are some of Brother Ray’s thoughts on Xaverian and the education of teenage boys.

When you attended Xaverian in 1966, the school was still a very young school. What was Xaverian like in the early years?

Our class completed the school (all four grades filled the school) for the first time. As a city kid, all of it was an exciting and overwhelming experience.

I came from a smaller eighth grade class at St. Thomas Aquinas in Jamaica Plain. It was an adjustment going from nuns to Brothers, coed to all male, city to suburbs, etc., but I never doubted my academics at Xaverian; I learned well from the Sisters of St. Joseph. The school was well run and orderly for the most part, but I had to find my place at Xaverian. That’s where running track came in. I began with cross-country, and that started my career with running.

What drew you to becoming a Xaverian Brother?

My mere association with the Xaverian Brothers during my high school education at Xaverian, although I didn’t seriously consider it until halfway through my freshman year of college. I had always wanted to be a teacher and realized this was the best path for me.

What do you think Xaverian will look like 20 years from now?

Haircuts and fashion may change, but I would assume the students will be the same. The art and science of teaching and teaching methods will probably keep changing. The essence of true learning emerges from teacher and student interaction and engagement. I hope that never changes.

Dear Brother Ray, Thank you for helping to shape me into the person I am today. From even before I came to Xaverian, I became a huge fan of yours. Your humor and general attitude toward life taught me so much, and I’ll always remember your stories of being a Xaverian track star back in the day. It was always a pleasure to see you and just talk about stuff. You’re one of the reasons why Xaverian was such a great school.

Michael Higgins

M

r. Higgins first started in 1984 as a part-time teacher and campus minister. He graduated from Boston College with an undergraduate degree in theology before earning a Master’s in divinity from Weston Jesuit School of Theology. Mr. Higgins and his wife Maureen, a chaplain at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, have four children, twin daughters Kerri and Beth, Benjamin ‘04, and Daniel ‘07.

On students, today vs. 30 years ago...

When I was in high school, we were not even offered calculus. Now calculus or other courses may be offered to students in their junior year or earlier. Students work at a higher level which leads teachers to teaching at a higher level. The inner liveliness of young people remains consistent.

Somehow, despite all the chicken and fries, they still have the ability to be incredibly active with fuller academics, demanding athletics, and extracurricular activities.

Theology was a part-time subject at Xaverian (in 1984). Eventually it was given a more equal status with the other academic subjects, especially since more and more lay students were getting graduate degrees in theology. The curriculum became more complete.

I will miss coming to work each day and being part of the constant give and take between teacher and students, teacher and teachers, and teacher and all the other supporting cast at a high school of administrators and staff.

ohn Connolly, P ’08, came to Xaverian in September of 1973 as a budding biology teacher at barely 21 years old. More than four decades later. Mr. Connolly is a Ryken Award winner for his outstanding contributions to the school.

On being student-friendly...

Xaverian has always been a student-friendly school. The learning centers foster a close relationship between the teachers and their students.

The barriers that exist at other schools have never existed here. The students have always felt comfortable approaching us for help.

On meeting his wife at Xaverian...

Well, I have always been partial to socializing in the copy room, and Senora Anna Maria Connolly is one of the reasons why. We made our first date during a discussion in that room. We dated for some time before we announced we were a couple. We were found out by Mrs. Ellie O’Donnell, who was the assistant to Mr. Cote, the dean. She was on to us. We tried to keep it a secret, but she figured it out.

Anna Maria is planning to retire sometime after I do, so I’ll be unsupervised during the day for a year or two.

On his Xaverian career...

A career of 44 continuous years as a science teacher at the same school is a good run. Xaverian is and will continue to be an important part of my life. It has been a long adventure from August of 1973. I still recall receiving a call from my uncle, Brother Pat (Alphonsus) Dwyer, that included this message: “Get over to Xaverian and apply for a teaching job. A biology teacher just resigned!”

Jim Glinski

J

im Glinski has been the cornerstone of the social studies department and department chair for a school record of 28 years. When he wasn’t helping in the social studies learning center, teaching A.P. modern history or U.S. history, he could be found leading the bowling club (one of the largest clubs in school history), Model U.N., playing bass in a number of bands, and sorting through his baseball card collection.

On Xaverian in his early years...

The school had just survived a financial crisis in which it almost closed in 1974, but thanks to bingo, busing, and a lot of hard work by Brother Drinan, parents, teachers, and others, it survived and later thrived...The Brothers in the school labeled it “Wildwood.” There were certainly some interesting characters who attended the school at the time, and some things were perhaps not run as efficiently as they are today; but there were some amazing people there, some of the giants on whose shoulders the school was built.

On the sense of community...

The school had the strong sense of community that still exists today. The growth in the size of the school in all its aspects has

meant that it is harder to know all the community members as closely as people knew each other in earlier years, but the sense that everyone is working for a common purpose and looking out for all members of the community still permeates the school.

On retirement plans...

Well, I’ve already booked a Bike and Barge Tour in Italy from Venice to Mantua for October, along with some possible trips to Vietnam and Japan. I currently volunteer at the North and South River Watershed Association and hopefully can expand my role in this and other environmental organizations. I still plan to teach A.P. U.S. History workshops for the College Board for a couple more years and maybe teach some adult education classes. My golf game needs a little work, and there is the opportunity to see more of my granddaughter in DC. Speaking of DC, I used to have a saying by my desk which said, “It’s too bad that the people who really know how to run the country are too busy teaching school.”

So now I guess I’ll have to see what I can do to help run the country a little better (which won’t be hard to do).

Dear Ms. Schofield, I, along with hundreds of others, were lucky to have you as a teacher, and I sincerely hope you enjoy you r retirement. Your class ignited a tru e passion for reading, absorbing, and reacting to challenging material tha t flowed from you each class… I’d love to know your opinion on Bob Dylan winning the Nobel Prize for Literature or what you’re reading at the moment. I know that you will certainly be missed.

ileen Schofield started at Xaverian in 1976, along with (now retired) Mr. Lalli and Mr. Glinski. She was fresh out of Boston College where she received her MA in English, after having received her BA in English at Assumption College, where she was one of the women in the first co-ed class.

On getting a job at Xaverian...

I was finishing up my degree and stopped by the department chair’s office to check on a letter of recommendation he was providing. As I was leaving, I casually mentioned that I was interested in teaching high school and asked him to keep me in mind if he heard of any openings. Two days later Brother Richard Cook, C.F.X. called to invite me for an interview. He had called BC looking for candidates for an opening. Who could have imagined 40 years later that I would still be here?

I remember vividly my first impressions of an incredibly welcoming environment. I think that has been a constant. I don’t think I had a real sense of how young the school was or how much of what we did would become

part of the foundation for programs and activities.

On her favorite books...

There are so many....I always come back to Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Each year when I teach it in AP, I am amazed by the richness of the writing. I heard Morrison speak some years ago in Boston, and it was a thrill. Chaim Potok’s The Chosen is a wonderful story with memorable characters. For style, I think Virginia Woolf ’s To the Lighthouse is great. James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man...too many to name...

On missing Xaverian...

This is a remarkable community. We share so much time together, and I will definitely miss being part of the day-to-day life here. I will miss the rhythm of the school year from the excitement of new beginnings and such optimism in September to the Christmas prayer service with Herr Lewis singing “Silent Night” to the sense of completion each year at Graduation.

RICK SPILLANE ’68

A Legacy of Generosity &

A

fter 12 years as Xaverian Brothers High School’s Chair of the Board of Trustees, Rick Spillane ’68 is handing the reins over to John Murphy ’70. His tenure as chairperson has been exceptionally successful, guiding the school through multiple phases of construction, the addition of the Francis Xavier Division, and the Called to Lead, $25 million capital campaign. Not one to allow for stagnation, Rick feels turnover on the Board is important to preventing entrenched leadership and continuing to move the school forward.

Additionally, he wants to give other alumni the chance to reconnect as he did with his alma mater through board service.

“I was really disconnected from the school for a long time. I graduated in 1968 and lost touch for 30 years.” All that changed when he was introduced to Headmaster Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X. in 1998. “Once you meet Brother Dan, you’re in his web. You’re not going to get away,” he jokes.

His admiration for Brother Dan’s leadership of the school is apparent and heartfelt. “Brother Dan’s passion for Xaverian is palpable,” he says. “He exudes it. Because of that, it inspires everybody in the school, at all levels.

Passion in a leader is sometimes the hardest thing to replicate. He’s got it passion for Xaverian. When he leads, people follow.”

Passion for Xaverian is something Rick, like Brother Dan, has in abundance. “I think Xaverian transforms lives...You see a lot of Xaverian students just like me, who come in pretty immature. Xaverian is a great place to learn how to grow up to be a responsible man on many levels, academic, athletic, social, and leadership. I’ve had three grand nephews graduate, who all had terrific experiences here. They’re all very different, but the culture is supportive of every different kind of kid. I can’t say enough good things about it.”

“The school had a really strong culture when I was there, a culture around brotherhood, an emphasis on Catholic values, and strong education and athletic programs. It was just amazing to come back thirty years later and discover the culture has survived so well through all the ups and downs in today’s world...the school is still really strong. A big piece of that is the alums who are there...Stevenson, Penza, Smith...look at all the alums involved in the school. They maintain the culture. And Brother Dan’s leadership since he came in has really enhanced that and added to it. The leadership from the brothers over the years starting with Brother Marcellus (the first principal of

People give money for buildings, because they can see the bricks and mortar. But scholarships are equally as important and sometimes people don’t realize the impact they have on the school. The cost of a Xaverian

education is nearing $20,000. When I was there it was about $600. You don’t have the quality of leadership, administration, teaching, programs, all those things, for nothing. The school can’t survive without significant amounts of financial aid. It’s the biggest reason people should be giving.

One of those strong leaders, though Rick downplays his role saying he didn’t “do the heavy lifting,” has been Rick himself. Rick’s leadership and quiet generosity have compelled many to make extraordinary gifts to Xaverian. In return for his tireless 12 years of leadership, the Board of Trustees surprised Rick and his wife Joanne with a scholarship in their name. The Rick ’68 and Joanne Spillane Scholars Program was announced with, astoundingly, more than $1 million in initial contributions at his board retirement reception.

Rick thought he was being given the golf bag (seen in picture) as his gift for board service, and calls it a prized possession. But as he was standing up to say thank you, Brother Dan told him to sit down. “Then they described the scholarship fund, and we (Rick and Joanne) were both just blown away by the thought, most importantly because financial aid is critical to Xaverian these days...many of our families are middle class families, and they have a hard time keeping up with the cost of the education.” Rick says he and Joanne are “so moved by the scholarship. It was completely out of left field! We feel so honored and grateful for the contributions of the board.”

The Rick ’68 and Joanne Spillane Scholars Program will be used to attract academically gifted students, as well as to support inner city students from Catholic and charter schools who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend Xaverian.

hanks to the strategic vision of the Board of Trustees and the generosity of our community, we exceeded our original $20 million Called to Lead: The Campaign for Xaverian goal and are only $20,000 away from reaching the elevated goal of $25 million. This figure is double the fundraising for last decade’s capital campaign, demonstrating the present vitality of Xaverian Brothers High School. A tour of the campus is testimony of this vitality.

Called to Lead, in conjunction with the Growing in Harmony strategic plan, have made possible the expansion and renovation of much of the campus, including the new library, the wing of academic centers, the theater, the cafeteria, the campus ministry center, the music center, and the new science labs. Now in the final phase, the current building project will provide Xaverian with an inspiring, renovated Chapel, a library designed for modern learning, and additional office space and conference rooms.

Gunning Locker Room

T

hanks to the generosity of Dianne Wright and the Gunning family, the Xaverian varsity hockey team is enjoying a brand new home this season. A customized locker room was built and dedicated to the memory of Michael Gunning ’91 and Thomas Gunning, P ’18, ’20 at the Canton Ice House.

“Our program and our team feels extremely humbled, grateful and very fortunate for their generosity,” said Head Coach Dave Spinale.

Senior co-captain Henry Bruckner agreed, adding “Knowing the room is dedicated to the Gunnings makes it even more special. Every time we go into that room, we know it has a deeper meaning, more than just a locker room.”

Hockey team captain, Henry Bruckner ’17, was an honorary member of the Boston Bruins Alumni team in a special charity game on Saturday, March 18 at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro. Henry was selected by the Bruins Alumni Association and the Fisher House of Boston, a local nonprofit that provides support for families of active military members receiving medical treatment in the Boston area. He skated with Bruins legends such as Rick Middleton, Terry O’Reilly, and Ray Bourque.

This year’s Fisher House of Boston charity game was in honor of fallen Xaverian alumnus, Sgt. Adam Kennedy ’00. Sgt. Kennedy sacrificed his life in 2007 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

200th Career Win for Coach Tim Gardner Congratulations to the Hawk’s head coach for lacrosse, Tim Gardner, who earned his 200th career victory with a 12–7 win over Catholic Memorial in April. Gardner is in his 19th year as head coach at Xaverian, during which time the team has achieved a D-I state title, as well as numerous Catholic Conference and State Finalist titles. In addition, over 100 of his athletes have graduated to play at the highest level in college.

I

n a recent “This Week at Xaverian” email to current families, Headmaster Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X., referenced the Francis Xavier Division (grades seven and eight), which he called “an addition that has been more successful than we ever could have imagined.”

“These boys radiate a youthful energy that has been a welcome source of joy,” he said. In addition to the enthusiasm the FXD students bring to campus, they have also had a positive impact on the curriculum. The administration has found that students coming from FXD into the high school are so well prepared that they expanded the curriculum to offer Advancement Placement classes to freshmen.

Critical to the success of FXD students are the teachers who prepare them to enter the rigorous academic environment at Xaverian. These teachers, from a variety of public, private, and Catholic schools throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island, lay the foundation for each boy who enters FXD. In order to thank them, Xaverian invited the FXD students to nominate particularly impactful teachers from their sending schools to attend an appreciation breakfast. On May 26, 36 teachers from 29 schools reunited with their former pupils in the Simoni Lobby. Teachers and students enjoyed a bountiful breakfast and a brief speaking program. Then off the boys went, proudly giving their former teachers tours of their new school.

As one teacher put it, “this is the nicest thing that’s happened to me in 36 years of teaching.”

Perfect Ending “For 46 years I’ve been thinking about football every summer,” says Charlie Stevenson ’69, Xaverian’s athletic director. This summer will be the first he isn’t prepping for a football season, as he passes on the clipboard and headset as Xaverian football head coach to his friend and former defensive coordinator, Al Fornaro ’78.

Stevenson played football as a student at Xaverian in the late 1960s, He was only a few years into college when he got his first job coaching.

It was 1971 and he was back on the gridiron as a coach for the Hawks’ freshmen team. Partway through his first season, he was promoted to a varsity position. As he says, “I’ve been coaching at the varsity level ever since.” His first five years of coaching were at Xaverian, followed by five years at Malden Catholic, then Medford High School, and then back at Xaverian as a full-time teacher and assistant coach to George McCabe.

Stevenson spent 22 years in the assistant coach role before taking over as head coach in 1993.

You might expect a 46-year career in coaching would be punctuated by the big wins, but for Stevenson (though the wins were plentiful), it’s the losses he remembers most vividly. The worst, he says, came on his first year as head coach at Xaverian in 1993. “Our loss on Thanksgiving Day to St. John’s Prep,” he says. “They really beat us. And I did not take that loss very well. It made me have some self-doubt. I think Al would tell you I came back after the game—we were all in the coach’s room afterwards—and I was physically ill...the only time I ever got physically ill because of a loss. Al was the defensive coordinator, so we put together a plan.”

They set their priorities: “Defense was No. 1. Special teams were No. 2. And, offense was No. 3. You have to be good in all three places, but when you’re really good in defense, you have a chance to win every game. And, primarily due to Al’s contributions, our defense has been great for all these years. Fortunately, over the next 23 years, we were 15 and 8 against the Prep.”

That first big loss on his first big season as head coach at Xaverian has been softened by the incredible highs: 206 wins, 14 Catholic

Conference Championships, four Division-I South Championships, 10 State Championship appearances, and seven State Championship victories. It’s a record of which any coach should be proud. The final high of his career, however, came as a surprise to Charlie. It was the last game of the season and his team had lost.

“That last game,” he said, “I certainly would have liked to have won that game. When you don’t win big games like that and you’re the head coach, it becomes very lonely on the field very quickly. After you address the team there are no reporters, there are no congratulators, you’re just there, by yourself. Everybody just leaves…so I was standing there and I knew it was my last game. But as I turned to walk off the field for the last time, my granddaughter came down to the field and jumped into my arms. I walked off the field with her in my arms. That was a good way to end it.”

Nicholas Guadagno ’17 Turns His Lens on Xaverian Look through the lens of senior Nick Guadagno’s camera and you’ll see the city of Boston in a new light. City photography began for this Newton resident as a parentproof reason for day trips into Boston. It quickly turned into something much bigger: a carefully curated, Instagram photography portfolio...one that’s turning heads. It even caught the attention of the Boston Globe. This spring, Nick opened his email and there in his inbox was a message from a Boston Globe staffer, asking if they could feature his Instagram account in the Globe’s “My Instagram” series.

Nick said “yes,” submitted some photos, and chatted with the staffer on the phone. His story ran on April 28.

“The response was amazing,” he says. “I told my parents and a lot of people saw it on their

own. People have been reaching out saying congratulations. There has been a lot of really great support.”

Nick came to Xaverian as a junior, repeating the year in order to get the benefit of Xaverian academics and community. He found a place in the Campus Ministry program, which wasn’t something he expected coming from a public school. Nick joined the X-Cel and X-Act after school programs to volunteer and serve the broader community. He says the all-boys environment leads to a certain camaraderie that he didn’t have at his previous school. “I have friends from all different backgrounds and groups. There are no cliques. I feel more connected here.”

And the teachers, Nick says, are “awesome.”

“Teachers here recognize the best of each boy in the class, and they want to bring that out,” he says.

“I’ve had some really amazing teachers who have recognized my potential and encouraged me to reach it. My junior year I was loading up on all

of the courses and requirements after transferring here. But I was talking with Ms. Duddy at the beginning of this year and told her I take photos.”

As a result, Nick’s photographs were included in a student art show in which Xaverian participated at Gillette Stadium.

We asked Nick to take his unique perspective and apply it to photographing Xaverian’s campus.

Creative Teaching Leads to Engaged Learners in All-Boys Education

W

hen teaching to a classroom of teenage, or pre-teen boys, there are a few tricks of the trade that Xaverian teachers have learned through the years to keep their attention and foster a love of learning by playing to the boys’ strengths and interests, namely their love for competition, direction, and activity. Xaverian Principal Jacob Conca ’94, Ph.D. elaborates: “Not too long ago, education centered on the idea of the teacher as the only knowledge source in the classroom and therefore the giver of knowledge. This outdated idea is best encapsulated by the metaphor of the student as an empty vessel, one to be ‘filled up’ with knowledge by the teacher. That singular approach to education just doesn’t work anymore.

Now, boys’ learning is best served when the students are active participants, creators, and drivers of their own learning. Under this approach, the teacher remains a master of content but must also design instructional activities that require the students to be actively involved in their learning. No longer is education something that is ‘done’ to a student, rather the teacher and student are now in an active partnership to further student knowledge and understanding. Instructional activities that require respectful competition and healthy debate are two staples of this approach.”

derived from our faith and mission. So, yes, when tackling novel challenges within the classroom, we certainly educate our students to critically analyze a given issue through multiple lenses, but the most important lens is rooted in one’s moral and ethical framework. With an eye toward the future, we firmly believe our graduates will be leaders of companies; they are going to be holding seats in board rooms; they are going to be policy makers; they are going to be decision makers; and when they engage in this work, it is critical that they analyze issues through multiple lenses, and one such lens must be grounded in a solid moral and ethical framework. In this way, they can work to ensure that their efforts result in a better world for all.”

Here are three examples of active, engaged learning with moral/ethical considerations, taking place at Xaverian this spring.

Deep-Fried Clean Energy

W

hen Andrew Piasecki ’17, Thomas Underwood ’17, Samuel Laurent ’17, Thomas Mogan ’17, Langston Puller ’17, and James (JC) Ralff ’17 were challenged by their bio-chemistry teacher, Mr. Howard, to spend their fourth term working on a research project, they decided to try to take the old frying oil from the cafeteria and turn it into bio-diesel - an experiment in clean energy creation. They spent their science classes, as well as their unscheduled periods, in the lab working on their project. In the end, they were able to create bio-diesel at approximately one quarter of the strength of the diesel needed to run an engine.

There were some surprises along the way, like the amount of waste that remains as a result of the process. One by-product was glycerin. Faced with what to do with all the remaining glycerin, they did some more research and learned they could use it 20

to make soap. The seniors gathered their research, data, and conclusions, and created a presentation

which they delivered to fellow classmates and members of the faculty and administration.

Thinking like Philanthropists

G

rade 9 students presented their capstone human geography projects on the last week of school.

Tasked with thinking like philanthropists, each group was assigned to form a mock non-profit and create compelling, fact-based presentations for funding the resolution to a particular need in the world today.

The groups researched specific causes (like water, energy, sanitation, and women’s literacy), and then presented their non-profit’s mission via videos, websites, poster boards, and more. Freshmen took turns traveling through the FXD gymnasium to visit each “non-profit” and learn about their cause. At the culmination of the period, students gathered to vote for which non-profit they would support. The assignment provided a creative structure wherein the boys could delve into relevant issues in the world today and work together to offer solutions to the problems.

To Colonize Mars or Not to Colonize Mars

T

hat is the question Grade 8 students had to answer for their final science exam. This comprehensive project pitted student-against-student as they sought to defend their position on whether or not to colonize Mars. Groups were established and roles assigned, including “experts” in weather, climate, geology, rocket mission control, fuel and energy, robotics, nutrition and health, and hydrology. Each team member on boths sides of the debate presented his position on why or why not to colonize Mars, based on their area of expertise. Food sources, breathable air, water supply, wind storms, space suits, exercise, and more were considered and described in detail. Then the floor was opened for the two sides to face off, asking and answering questions to defend their position. It was a lively and creative way to bring together the various topics and skills that the FXD students have learned about over the past two years in science. By collaborating with one another to research, produce, and present a debate, these students got a taste of what it’s like to be involved in scientific exploration in the real world.

Education Sets Sail “Scary is a weird term for me because I love adrenaline,”

says Charles Downey III ’19. “So it wasn’t scary. I fell in love with going aloft, climbing up the stays to get to the fighting top.”

Charlie is talking about dangling multiple stories above the open ocean, tying up and letting down sails on a 200-foot, three-masted square rigger... or in other words, a “tall ship.” He spent his April vacation aboard the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, sailing from Bermuda to Rhode Island through an education-at-sea program.

To be clear, it’s not a vacation. Passengers aboard the tall ship function as crew members. They sleep in group trainee berths, and while the ship boasts hot, running water for showers, it’s certainly not something trainees can take advantage of daily. As the Oliver Hazard Perry website explains, there are no “passengers” aboard the ship: “all who sail aboard her will do so as members of the ship’s company fully participating in the ship’s operation” (www.ohpri. org).

“You essentially run the boat with the assistance of the crew,” says Charlie.

“You have a boat check assignment when you go around the boat and make sure everything is as it should be. You also have lookout, checking to see if 22

there is anything you need to watch out for...other boats, land, the important stuff you don’t want the boat to hit. Throw in chores and galley duty, too. The easiest way to say it is that the crew isn’t running the boat; they’re directing you on how to run it so that by the end of the week, you run it without the assistance of the crew.”

For Charlie, this trip wasn’t about getting his “sea legs.” He’s been sailing for as long as he can remember. It’s a family affair for the Downeys, with the three children coming by their love of sailing naturally from their parents, Charles Jr. and Lisa Downey. But sailing and working on the OHP is completely different than being on his father’s racing boat, Charlie says. He first heard of the opportunity to sail aboard the tall ship from his mother, who works with Sail Newport. He got a taste for the experience over Columbus Day weekend last fall and gratefully got his chance for the weeklong immersion trip this April. Simply put, he loved it. He loved it so much, in fact, that he is hoping to join the trip this summer from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia.

“It puts you outside your comfort zone. It’s the opposite of what you’re used to and it allowed me to push myself in so many different ways,” Charlie says. The challenge and the rush of adrenaline he found working aboard the Oliver Hazard Perry made it one of the best experiences he has ever had. He hopes to sail at the collegiate level after graduating from Xaverian, and sailing aboard the OHP has certainly helped prepare him for that.

ongratulations to FXD student, Michael Karshis ’22, for his success at the New England Piano Teachers’ Association annual competition. Michael took first place at the Mildred Freiberg Middle School Competition, which was held on April 1 at M. Steinert and Sons in South Boston.

Michael and his piano-playing talents were featured in a community profile last fall on www.xbhs.com. We asked him if Xaverian had a song, what would it sound like? His answer: “It would sound like Mozart, but 100 times better...It would probably start with a D major, because it sounds happy.”

That’s not new math. That’s 46 social media posts plus three emails, adding up to $58,950 in just one day, all to say thanks to Xaverian Brothers High School.

Wednesday, May 10, 2017, marked Xaverian’s “Day of Giving Back.” It was a first for the school on three fronts: the first official “Day of Giving Back,” the first entirely socialmedia-driven fundraising campaign, and the first-ever Facebook Live broadcasts, welcoming viewers inside daily life at Xaverian. The Day of Giving Back was a resounding success, offering opportunity for all those who hadn’t yet made a gift to Xaverian this year to join in the giving. 207 people took that opportunity and generously donated, and thousands of alumni, family, and friends joined us via social media to take part in the excitement.

Gaining Momentum J

ohn Walsh ’13 made a name for himself as a filmmaker while studying at Boston College. His work, which started with a spin-off of Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” video that went viral and resulted in Swift herself tweeting her thanks to BC, quickly became his life. It was a surprise to John, who entered as a “jock” and is exiting this spring with a dual major in accounting and theology, a minor in film studies, and an impressive film portfolio. He was recently featured by BC as a “Senior to Remember.”

He also earned the prestigious Momentum Award from BC Heights, the college’s newspaper. According to BC Heights, recipients of the Momentum Award, “set themselves apart not only making strides for their own sake, but for those around them.”

Through his involvement in Agape Latte, a monthly event at Boston College designed for students to learn more about faith and religion in a social setting, John had the pleasure of introducing a fellow Xaverian alumnus to the crowd.

Matt Hasselbeck ’93 and his wife, Sarah, presented at Agape Latte this May and

talked about the role of faith in their marriage.

Openness and acceptance are important to John, and he found them at both Xaverian and BC. “Xaverian is a special place. It gives you the confidence to have meaningful relationships with people and have conversations that matter. The best thing about being at college is being up until 3 a.m., just talking to friends. And that thread started for me at Xaverian, where you get to be friends with a lot of different types of guys.” John says that thread ran from Xaverian’s Spirit Hawk to BC’s Agape Latte.

“Agape Latte is a lot like Spirit Hawk,” he explains. As student co-chair of the organization, John is proud that students from all walks of life at BC attended. “You’ll always have the campus ministry types coming to events, but what’s cool is that Agape Latte started attracting mainstream audiences. Matt Hasselbeck was great for that because we got kids who normally wouldn’t be there. In the best Spirit Hawk events and the best Agape Lattes, you might never even hear the word ‘God.’ The conversation is about what’s most important in your life. To me that means God,

For John, conversations lead to stories, and storytelling is what he discovered he loves so much about filmmaking. Whether it’s a dance compilation or a documentary about a homeless man, John has come to appreciate the storytelling process. “I don’t really know where it will take me, but it’s cool that BC and Xaverian are really the foundation of it all. I’m infinity grateful... it’s such a privilege to have had these opportunities.”

He was also the one who threw the football that Lady Gaga caught at the end of her halftime performance in Super Bowl LI. Mann volunteered to be Gaga’s offscreen quarterback when the University’s Department of Athletics received a request to fill a vacancy on the field. Mann practiced the routine with Gaga Tuesday through Friday, and on Sunday he threw a perfect toss right before the singer jumped off the stage to conclude the halftime show.

Chad Puclowski has earned his doctor of ministry in transformational leadership from Boston University. His dissertation, Xaverian Brothers Spirituality and Year of Service: A Unique Transformational Leadership Opportunity, focused on developing a deeper understanding of the Xaverian charism and Xaverian spirituality, and it proposes an XBSS-wide year of service program to accomplish that. Chad is a member of campus ministry, as well as a member of the theology and mathematics departments, here at Xaverian.

DJ Pagliuca held the triple jump record for our outdoor track team (46’ 0.75”) while he was a student at Xaverian.

This past May, he competed in his last college track meet.

Greg Petrucci was named a Rising Researcher at UMass and was selected as the one undergraduate researcher to present his work at the October 2016 grand opening of the campus’s Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS). He also presented new data from his studies at the 2017 American College of Sports Medicine annual meeting in Denver, Colorado.

Mike Sennott is currently interning at The Boston Consulting Group in their global services Boston office. He will be attending ICN Business School next year in Nancy, France to earn a third degree in European business, after graduating from Roger Williams University with a dual degree in international business and marketing, as well as Spanish and finance minors.

Devon DiMascio ’16 had an outstanding rookie season pitching for the University of New Haven.

He moved from the bullpen to starter and threw 33 innings with 19 strikeouts and a 2.41 ERA. He saved his best for the playoffs going six innings hitless and seven innings scoreless against No. 5-ranked Southern New Hampshire University in a 3-0 win.

Devon will pitch this summer for the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.

Patrick Nicholson was named one of the University of Georgia’s ‘Amazing Students.’ During his sophomore year, he participated in the Washington Semester Program where he lived, learned, and interned in Washington, DC. While in DC, he also interned in the Office of Government Relations for the University of Georgia as the federal relations intern.

While interning, Patrick worked on a wide variety of projects, such as the UGA Fiscal Year 2017 Appropriation Requests and a proposal for an alumni advocacy program at UGA. His favorite part was the exposure to all the incredible research studies that the faculty members conducted. A highlight was conducting a tour with Dr. Gary Grossman of the Warnell School of Forestry around the Capitol for his congressional testimony. During that time, he was able to learn about his research, which was completely outside the realm of his business-focused major.

Michael Doherty ’15

his May, the Xaverian Brothers High School community was tested as we kept constant vigil for word of missing alumnus, Michael Doherty ’15. Our prayers, hearts, and minds were firmly focused on carrying Michael to safety and comforting his family. On May 20, we received word of Michael’s passing. The outpouring of support for Michael’s family was a reminder of the Xaverian community’s unwavering empathy and care. Community members who had never met Michael were calling the school to see what could be done to help. Parents, faculty, staff, students, and alumni filled Xaverian’s theater as we gathered for a prayer service to honor and remember Michael on May 23. Additionally, alumnus Matthew Schamber ’13 came forward and requested that a scholarship fund be established in Michael’s honor. With the Doherty family’s endorsement and support, the Michael J. Doherty ’15 Memorial Scholarship Fund began. To date, over 375 gifts totaling more than $100,000 have been donated to the scholarship fund.

Our community of faith remembers Michael, prays for him, and feels blessed because he made a difference in our lives. Michael was a hardworking student and athlete, a brother, a leader, and a loyal friend. He served as president of the Spanish National

Honor Society, was a member of the National Honor Society, earned honors all four years, and was awarded silver medals in mathematics and science at graduation. While at Xaverian, Michael participated in Students Against Destructive Decisions, Xaverian Leadership Institute, Xaverian Pilgrimage to Italy, Global Encounter, Soccer, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track and Field. We are confident that Michael’s legacy at Xaverian is alive, and with the establishment of the scholarship in his name, it will continue for generations to come.

We ask for your continued prayers for Michael, his family, in particular, his parents, Daniel and Nancy; his brothers, Daniel, (Xaverian alumnus, Class of 2013) and Kevin; his cousins Ryan Brandenburg (Xaverian alumnus, Class of 2009), Colin Foley (Xaverian alumnus, Class of 2003), Conor Foley ’20 and Joseph Fenerty ’18; and all others touched by this tragedy.
