From the Headmaster Dear Friends of Xaverian,

W

elcoming. Compassionate. Strong. These are words recently used to describe Xaverian Brothers High School, and I humbly submit that I couldn’t agree more. This year

we launched a market research effort that took us from demographic studies and population projections through internal and external perception audits. This will ultimately result in a marketing campaign that will capture the essence of Xaverian education, and which we look forward to sharing with you soon. The results of the internal audit were particularly compelling for us. Students, faculty, staff, and parents all said the same thing: the Xaverian community is welcoming, compassionate, strong, educated, disciplined, enthusiastic, devoted, and intelligent. From a list of nearly 100 different words for participants to select, these words spoke to our community as reflecting who we are and representing our strengths.

What does this mean? It means that now, nearly 55 years into our story, Xaverian Brothers High School continues to live its mission of educating young men to use their talent to respond to the needs of the world and to lead lives of purpose and service. This magazine contains examples of our students and graduates who are doing exactly that, including John Sullivan ’77 (page 2), the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State; Michael Brodo ’18 (page 4), whose work to promote civics education is affecting change in Massachusetts; and, Evan Sepe ’20 (page 5), who used his Eagle Scout project to literally give a hand to those in need.

John Sullivan ’77 A True Patriot, Leader, and Public Servant

T

hank you to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan for leading our diplomatic efforts over the last few weeks. He is a true patriot, leader, and public servant.

That’s what Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, tweeted about Xaverian’s own John J. Sullivan ’77, who was confirmed by the Senate as Deputy Secretary of State on May 24, 2017, following a 94-6 vote. John had been selected by Rex Tillerson, the former Secretary of State, and nominated by the President. When Tillerson was ousted in early March, John stepped in as Acting Secretary and quietly took the reins of the State Department until Mike Pompeo was appointed on April 26. John has stayed above the political fray, dutifully serving the people of the United States of America. Many Americans may not even know his name, despite the eminent position he holds in government. Perhaps it’s because, for John, his service has never been for personal or professional gain.

“I’ve always tried to serve without partisan blinders on, doing what’s right for the United States and the U.S. Government, and implementing the President’s program.”

But let’s go back to the beginning and see how a Xaverian grad ended up in one of the most senior positions in government service.

As John tells it, it had a lot to do with Xaverian.

“Xaverian prepared me for college, for law school, and for service in government,” John said. “My classmates and the faculty here were, I think it’s fair to say, the biggest influences on my career over the last 40 years.”

That’s high praise, especially considering that John went from Xaverian to Brown University, and then onto Columbia Law School. Inspired by his uncle, William H. Sullivan, John knew early on that he wanted a career in government service. Bill Sullivan served as Ambassador to Laos (1964–1969), the Philippines (1973–1977), and Iran (1977–1979). “He (Bill) had been recalled from Iran by President Carter in the summer of ’79,”

remembers John, who was at Brown at the time. “It was his staff that was taken hostage on November 4, 1979. That became the famous hostage crisis lasting into January of ’81...444 days that Americans were held hostage by the regime in Tehran.”

It was about that time, during John’s sophomore year at Brown, that he decided he was going to enlist in the Marines and defer his degree. His father intervened. “He told me ‘no’,” John said, “‘You are going to finish your degree and if you want to join the Marine Corps you will do so as a commissioned officer, not as a boot at Parris Island.’” His father passed away soon after, and John credits him with paving his path toward law school and ultimately service in government.

At Columbia, John made the Columbia Law Review and went on to clerk for Supreme Court Justice David Souter. From there he went into the George H.W. Bush administration, working in the Department of Justice for Attorney General William P. Barr. Over the

Walking into what used to be the old library here at Xaverian, up on the second floor, and seeing Brother Joe Gerard sitting at his desk. I remember bringing him draft papers that I was working on or a college application essay for his review. He would take my dry prose and enliven it, as only he could, and express his surprise and shock at the grammatical errors I’d made. I can hear him saying, ‘Sonny, good God, I thought I’d taught you better than that…’ When I think of Xaverian, I think of great teachers like Brother Joe. last three decades, John has served as Deputy General Counsel in the Department of Defense and Deputy Secretary of Commerce (during George W. Bush’s presidency), as the chair of an advisory committee on U.S. relations with Iraq (during Barack Obama’s presidency), and now as Deputy Secretary of State with, as mentioned before, a brief time as Acting Secretary of State. These years of service were punctuated by long stretches at Mayer Brown, a D.C. law firm. “I have bounced back and forth from the public sector to the private sector,” said John. “I went from private practice into government, different government jobs in different cabinet departments, back to private practice, but ultimately always heading back into government service.”

For John, government service is about working as part of a team and putting the people of the United States above his own personal interests and accolades. “It’s not about individual accomplishment or achieving office,” he said. “It’s about putting the people of the United States first, to borrow President Trump’s policy mantra. I mean that in the sense of doing right by the American people...it’s about standing up for them and never forgetting that you’re working for the people and not for your

own career aggrandizement…It’s about staying humble and true to core Xaverian values.”

It’s those Xaverian values that keep John coming back and giving back to his alma mater. Though the truth is, he says, “I get more out of coming back than I give. Coming back and seeing how things are going at 800 Clapboardtree Street and seeing former teachers, it recharges me to go back to Washington, back to my job and my family.”

Keeping it all in perspective is important to John. “Humility is an indispensable virtue,” he said. “Some of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen people make, whether that’s the President of the United States or just someone in their personal lives, including my own, come from a lack of humility. Humility was the thing that most influenced me in my preparation for being Deputy Secretary of State, being humble enough to admit what I don’t know and to ask questions, without presuming to know the answers, and to ask for help. I think it provides a good grounding for whatever one chooses to do in life.” And “grounded” is a good way to describe John.

the leader of the free world. He views himself as a man who fills a position in government, a government that is one small aspect of what makes America what it is. “The United States is so much bigger than the federal government or the current administration. It’s our cultural influence around the world. It’s what we’ve done as a people. It’s our example as a country that has constantly sought to improve itself. I am thrilled to have a position where I can, in some small way, participate in decisions that may have an effect on our country and our status in the world. But I’m under no illusions about the significance of what I do. I occupy an office and work for a cabinet secretary, trying to help him implement his and the President’s vision for U.S. foreign policy. Being witness to that and doing what little I can to support the implementation of our foreign policy and defend our values is a source of great satisfaction for me.”

Mike Brodo ’18 wants to talk about politics

I

n this current political climate, identifying yourself as a democrat or a republican can be an invitation for argument, and talking politics is no longer dinner table conversation - it’s taboo. That’s what Mike Brodo wants to change. He wants people from all sides to be able to share ideas, to disagree with civility, and to move the conversation forward.

He’s not just talk either, he’s action.

“We need to get over the idea of rigid partisanship,” says Mike. “Proposed legislation or ideas aren’t inherently bad just because the sponsor has a D or R next to his or her name. This bipartisanship is coming to life on Beacon Hill, and I’m proud to be playing a direct role.” He’s referring to a bill that he, as the State Chairman of the Teenage Republicans of Massachusetts, helped to pass through the Senate in a bipartisan effort with the Teenage Democrats of Massachusetts. If approved by the House (House Bill 1582), it will require the implementation of comprehensive civics education in schools across Massachusetts.

Education is the key, according to Mike. “Civics education is a bipartisan, student-oriented issue, and it’s so important because it gives students the tools they need now so they can be better citizens later in life.” For Mike, a better citizen is an engaged citizen, one with knowledge of the issues and the tool set to discuss and debate them with an open mind.

(And he wants you to talk about politics, too) to talk, listen, and learn from each other in a supportive environment.

He says he wanted to provide students with “a firsthand, positive experience discussing issues affecting our generation.” He adds, “It’s not just talking about issues, it’s learning how to talk about politics; because we are a democracy, we’re supposed to talk about the issues. It shouldn’t become something personal when we talk politics. The more involved I got (in politics), the more I realized that people can get very angry. But these are things that we are all supposed to work together on to find the best way to bring about change. The PolitiX Club shows us how to foster discussion and engage with the issues personally, instead of just going off on social media.”

Mike himself has been the recipient of that anger, from attacks on social media to insults being shouted at him in person.

In addition to his work with the Teenage Republicans, Mike has manned the phones, pounded the pavement, and tallied the votes for candidates in campaigns across Massachusetts and New Hampshire. When he was four years old, he says, he became enamored with the presidential election. By 2012, he began collecting and posting lawn signs (a collection which he says now fills his bedroom). He played an active role in the 2016 election cycle, and became a recognizable face on the campaign trail for Governor Charlie Baker. What he learned at the last convention he served at is this: “The more people recognize who you are, the more

they attack you.”

“We had a Republican state convention in late April,” he says. “There was someone challenging the Governor that I very vehemently disagreed with, he was a more far right, social conservative. What I experienced and saw at that convention highlights the urgent need for civics education and the need for this discourse to become commonplace in society, so we don’t have people hurling insults and attacks.

We want to help people and we want to put our best ideas forward, not hurl insults at each other.”

Despite the personal attacks and the sometimes heated exchanges, Mike says he is glad he has gotten into politics. He adds, “I learned to stand my ground, and it allowed me to mature a lot faster.

People think politics is an adult world, but I’m changing that.”

Mike is attending the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service next year, where he plans to major in international politics and minor in international development. He aspires to become a U.S. diplomat, working on issues of gender equality and education, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

He says he wants a job “that allows me to craft policy and is constantly making me try new things, meet new people, and expand my horizons, all in an effort to better the lives of others.”

He qualifies his hopes for his future, saying, “I don’t want to plan it out too much. I want to see what happens. But I do want to go forward and leave my mark on the world.” In many ways, he already has.

Evan Sepe ’20 Lends a Hand

W

hen it came time for Evan Sepe, a sophomore at Xaverian, to propose an Eagle Scout project, he knew that he wanted to literally give someone a hand. Evan had heard from a former teacher at his alma mater, Blessed Sacrament School, that there is a movement to create prosthetic hands using 3D printers. He pursued the idea and, with connections made from Natick to India and help from the community, Evan assembled six hands (three left and three right) for people in need using a design from e-Nable. e-Nable is a global, open source online community where people donate their ideas and their time to design, improve, and distribute prosthetic hands to those in need. Visitors to the site can purchase a hand design that is ready to print via a 3D printer. The remaining pieces needed for assembly are available in a kit for $25 each. Not having a 3D printer of his own and unsure of how to locate someone in need of a prosthetic, Evan began researching, making connections, and asking for help.

From the e-Nable site, he found Dr. Chris Craft, who works with students in South Carolina to distribute hands via, “the Hand Challenge,” a project he launched with one of his classes. Evan also found out that the Morse Institute at the Natick Community Library has a 3D printer, and the staff there was willing to donate the materials and the time it takes to print the parts. With the kits from e-Nable, the connection to people in need of a prosthetic from Dr. Craft, and the parts being printed at the Morse Institute, all that was left for Evan to do was to assemble the pieces and ship out the hands. As it turns out, assembly isn’t all that simple. “The hands were a little harder than we anticipated to assemble, but everyone was good about it and we all got it done,” said Evan. He and fellow Boy Scout volunteers worked together to build the hands and string together the movement mechanisms. Once fully assembled, Evan shipped the hands to Dr. Craft, who delivered them to six recipients in India.

With his Eagle Scout project completed, one might think Evan would stop there. He didn’t. He came to school and talked to Jim Conley, Director of Campus Ministry, about continuing the work here at

“For me, this project is a great way to link these two communities together,” Evan said. He’s referring to the Boy Scouts and Xaverian. Evan noted that there are a lot of similarities between the two organizations.

Both provide leadership and opportunities to try new things, and both allow for mentorship between students. He added, “Also the communities — the community through the Scouts and the community through Xaverian — are both very tight. We all look out for each other.”

With this project, Evan is helping these two local communities look out for and lend a hand to people throughout the world.

Lt. Colonel Gerald R. Faunce ’85 Scholarship

T

he family of Lt. Colonel Gerald “Rob” Faunce ’85 has established a scholarship in his name.

A graduate of the Class of 1985, Rob earned a degree at Suffolk University’s School for International Economics before proudly dedicating his life to serving his country in the U.S. Army. He served in Korea, Berlin, and at the Pentagon. He also conducted tours of duty in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan (Bronze Star). He was an Army Ranger/Airborne with the 1st Infantry Division.

His mother, Mary, and his brothers, Michael ’86 and Matthew ’91, established the $100,000 scholarship in Rob’s name after his passing. The scholarship will go to families in need of tuition assistance who desire a Xaverian education.

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF

O

n Saturday, May 19, Xaverian Brothers High School celebrated the Commencement of the Class of 2018, Xaverian’s 52nd graduating class. Diplomas were conferred to the 178 graduates by Headmaster Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X., Ph.D. and Principal Jacob Conca ’94, Ph.D. Collectively, these young men were accepted to 218 different colleges and universities. They have committed to continue their academic careers at top institutions such as Yale, Brown, Bates, Georgetown, Tufts, Boston College, Wake Forest, and Rensselaer.

The valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2018 were both National Merit Scholar Finalists. They are Michael Fitzgibbons (Valedictorian) and Armaan Dhillon (Salutatorian).

Michael, a three-season track runner for all four years of high school (and this year’s recipient of the Student Athlete of the Year award), is also a computer programming enthusiast, fluent in HTML5/CSS3, Java, Javascript, Python, and Swift, and currently developing his own programming language. Michael is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. He received four gold medals for interest and excellence in Computer Science, English, Mathematics, and World Languages (Spanish). Michael will attend Northeastern University.

Armaan Dhillon has been active in all aspects of student life at Xaverian, from serving as president of the Student Council and the Business Club to captain of the Model UN and Speech and Debate team.

He also served as president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Liturgical Music Ensemble, and competed on the math team. Armaan earned the following senior awards: the Business Club Award, the X-Act Award (a community service group), the Math Team Coaches’ Award, the Model UN Best Delegate Award, the National Honor Society Award, and the Speech and Debate Team Award. In addition to his membership and

service to the National Honor Society, Armaan is also a member of the National Music Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.

He won three gold medals for interest and excellence in English, Science, and Social Studies, and a silver medal in Mathematics. Armaan will attend Brown University.

In the valedictory address, Michael Fitzgibbons encouraged his classmates to continue to live the Xaverian call to be men of integrity who make good things happen: One of the main ideas which Xaverian sought to instill in us is the idea of becoming men of integrity. Though this phrase may have been uttered a thousand times in our four years here to the point where most of us roll our eyes when we hear it, it is significant in answering the question of why we are here today. A lot of us will do important things and become leaders in the world. The world needs men who will do the right thing with their power, acting with integrity. We cannot trust that good things will simply happen. We need to be the people that go out and make them happen.

Each year, the members of the graduating class and faculty nominate a senior for the Xaverian Award, the highest honor bestowed. This year’s Xaverian Award winner was William Perry. Brother Dan praised William’s “stunning embodiment of Theodore Ryken’s vision of a band of brothers who mutually help, encourage, and edify one another.” He said that William will live in the school’s history as one of Xaverian’s greatest role models: “His humility is authentic and a shining example of a young man who is comfortable in his own skin and true to his convictions. He has never pretended to be anything other than himself, and that has made all the difference.”

William is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Music Honor Society, and the Spanish National Honor Society. He won Theology and Fine Arts gold medals, as well as a silver medal in World Languages (Spanish). William will attend Brown University.

he Class of 1968 returned to campus on May 18 for their 50th reunion. After a quick snack and social, they donned their complimentary 50th reunion pins and ties, and boarded the Xaverian bus to St. Timothy Church in Norwood to take part in the Baccalaureate Mass alongside the Class of 2018.

There they received their golden diplomas to commemorate the anniversary of the Class of 1968’s commencement. Then it was back on the bus in true backto-school style. Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a sit-down dinner, a 8

short presentation, and tours of campus filled the night, alongside hearty amounts of laughter and trips down memory lane.

n a cloudy spring day, a group of energetic parents of alumni gathered, gloves on and rakes in hand, for the Alumni Parents Council’s firstever day of service at the House of Possibilities (HOPe), located on the periphery of the campus of Stonehill College in Easton. HOPe provides a comfortable respite for children with developmental challenges, affording their families the chance to take a break from their caregiving. The group of Xaverian parents of alumni began their day with a tour and overview of the services offered at the 11,000-square-foot facility which opened in 2009 and was “uniquely designed to support the needs of those who breathe life into our home” (houseofpossibilities.org). Following the tour, parents of alumni spent the day planting flowers and mulching the front and side of the house. Cathy Roche, P ’11, who was integral in organizing the day, explained “We had a small but fun group!”

After graduating from Saint Anselm College in 2007, Mike served as a faculty member in the Religious Studies Department, campus minister, Director of Campus Ministry, and since 2015, as the Assistant Principal for Student Life at Saint John’s. During this time, he earned an M.Ed. from Boston College and is currently a doctoral candidate at Creighton University.

“Both Brother Dan and I

have worked with Mike, and we are confident that his experience and commitment to the education of boys in the Xaverian tradition make him an ideal candidate for this important leadership role,” said Dr. Conca. “Mike has established a strong record as a talented administrator with a deep interest in the moral and spiritual development of young people. Christian Senior Service

S

ervice is an integral component of daily life at Xaverian. Students are asked to examine the active role they play in the school community, as well as the world at large. They are given numerous opportunities to serve others, and in doing so, they often learn a lot about themselves. This year, more than 100 seniors devoted five weeks of their last semester of high school to serving their local community. We spoke with several students who shared what they have learned, and some of their favorite moments:

“The best part of my experience at Blessed Sacrament School so far is seeing how much the kids enjoy having us there. It makes you feel like you’re doing the right thing being there and connecting with them on their level.”

“I guard the pool and help veterans with their physical therapy at the Brockton VA. I definitely feel humbled by it. Learning the experiences of our nation’s heroes and getting to know them on a personal level has really opened my eyes.”

Honoring Charlie

Alumnus, Teacher, Coach, Director of Athletics, and Friend

T

his fall was the first since 1993 that Coach Charlie Stevenson ’69 didn’t lead the Hawks on the football field. He passed on the clipboard and headset to his friend and former Defensive Coordinator, Al Fornaro ’78, who took over as Head Coach and led the Hawks to the Super Bowl. Now, after a more than five-decade history as a member of the Xaverian community, next fall will be the first in 20 years without Charlie Stevenson at the helm of Xaverian athletics. He has announced his plans to retire after 33 years as a faculty member, 24 years as Head Coach of varsity football, and 20 years as Director of Athletics.

According to Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X., Headmaster, “Since 1965 when Charlie Stevenson came to Xaverian as a freshman, he has been a loyal friend, colleague, leader, coach, and athletic director, who consistently demonstrates his commitment to Xaverian’s core values.”

Charlie’s legacy is one of grit, determination, inspiration, hard work, and, as David Nelson ’02, former Xaverian football player, puts it...love.

“There is a strong ethos that runs through the Xaverian football program and for lack of a better word, I call it ‘love’,” says Nelson.

“That’s how Xaverian wins. That’s how they’ve been able to create

this glue that bonds the guys together. And love exuded from Coach Stevenson. Love of the whole process of high school football. Love of the impact of a team. Of passion.

Of winning. Of competitiveness. Of all those things that make young men thrive and what has made Xaverian so successful. It’s a very real thing within the Xaverian football program and that started with Coach Stevenson.”

Charlie firmly believed and instilled in his players that “hard work beats talent, any day of the week.” He had an innate understanding for how far to push his athletes to get them beyond what they felt they could achieve. His passionate speeches at critical gametime moments (with ample historical references due to his background as a history teacher), provided motivation for the team to rally to the cause. With 206 wins, 14 Catholic Conference Championships, four Division-I South Championships, 10

State Championship appearances, seven State Championship victories, and recognition by the State Legislature, you might expect Charlie to take credit for the Hawks winning record during his tenure as Head Coach. You’d be wrong.

“The most important thing is to make sure that everyone knows that it was about the players, not about the coach,” says Charlie.

“The players win. The players make plays. The players are the guys out on the field of battle doing the job. I was really just a small piece of all that,” he says. He uses Dave Nelson as an example.

“In a 2001 game against Brockton, we were down 26-20 in the 4th, and I called Nelson over after he missed the first down with just minutes left in the game,” says Charlie.

Nelson, who had already carried the ball 26 times, gaining 188 yards for the Hawks, says, “I was so tired, my joints hurt. I was wearing someone else’s helmet because mine had broken in an earlier play. And I look up and see Coach Stevenson calling me over, yelling, ‘Nellie! Get over here right now! Are you tired? Do you want me to take you out of the game?’

And I said, ‘No, no Coach.’ ‘Well then let’s put the ball in the end zone!,’ he yelled.”

“I found I had that extra strength I didn’t know I had. I found it by Coach seeing it in me, being like, ‘I see that you’re

beat up but I know you have the strength,’ and I did. I ripped off a 51-yard carry for a game winning touchdown.”

Still, Charlie insists that it’s not his coaching, it’s his players who deserve the credit. “No one has the right to have the kind of unbelievable players that I was given the opportunity to coach.”

From the Hasselbecks (Matt ’93, Tim ’96, and Nathaniel ’00), to Greg ’93 and J.P. Comella ’99, Derrick Knight ’99, and Mo Hurst ’13, Charlie brought along phenomenal talent on the Xaverian football field.

“The evolution of Xaverian’s athletic program under Charlie’s leadership over the last two decades is astounding,” says Brother Daniel, “especially when we consider the many excellent programs and facilities that help make Xaverian an exceptional school today.”

“When I first became AD, we didn’t have any turf fields,” said Charlie. “We had one gymnasium and a weight room that was part of an old art room. The expansion of our athletic infrastructure has been unbelievable for me to watch, as someone who was here for the beginning in the ’60s.”

As he enters retirement, Charlie reflects with gratitude, "It's hard to find sufficient words to show the appreciation I have for so many people who gave me such a tremendous life."

OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

U

nder the leadership of captains Hayden Dillow ’18, John Driscoll ’18, Nick Pastore ’18, and Michael Fitzgibbons ’18, Xaverian’s outdoor track and field team ran, leapt, and threw their way to victory this season. The team competed in the Massachusetts State Coaches Invitational on May 12 at Durfee High School, where John Mariano ’19 captured the two-mile title with a personal best time of 9:33.06. Hayden finished 2nd in the discus with a throw of 151’, 3’’ and in the shot put with a throw of 48’, 6’’.

At the Catholic Conference Championships at Regis College on May 17, Brian Abraham ’18 won the high jump competition with a leap of 6’ 2”; Hayden won in discus with a throw of 151’, 6”; the 4x100-meter relay team of Nick, Brian, IK Irabor ’18, and Cooper Deveau ’19 ran one of the 14

fastest times in Massachusetts this year, clocking in at 43.66 seconds. In an outstanding individual performance, John Mariano finished 2nd in the mile with a personal best of 4:26 and returned to win the 800 meters in 1:58.20. In all, 10 Xaverian athletes established personal bests in the meet.

On May 28, the Hawks took 5th place (out of 42 teams) in the Division 1 state track meet at Andover High School. IK led the way by capturing the long jump title with a leap of 24’ 4,’’ smashing the school record by two feet and just missing the state record by half an inch. IK also took 4th in the 100 meters and was a leg in the 4x100 meter relay.

Congratulations to shot putter Hayden, who was named a scholar athlete by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Association, and Domenic DePaoli ’18, who was honored as a scholar athlete by the Boston Globe.

averian’s wrestling team had a strong season, finishing with a team record of 6-4. In addition to their collective success, individual athletes received a number of personal wins. Most notable were Anthony Amaru ’19, winner of the Methuen tournament and Canton’s Peckham tournament; Grant Laws ’19, winner of the Marlboro and Canton tournaments; and Michael Bobola ’22, winner of the Marlboro tournament. Other notable wins were Andrew Peruzzi ’18 placing 1st at the Weymouth tournament, Tanner Alexander ’20 winning the Canton tournament, and Dominic DiIorio ’19 getting his first win at the Division-1 South Sectionals.

The Hawks finished 4th in the D-1 South Sectionals, with Grant becoming a sectional champion. Three wrestlers qualified for the AllState Championship tournament with Anthony placing 6th, Michael placing 5th, and Grant placing 3rd. Grant also qualified for the New England Championships.

he young Xaverian alpine ski team had another terrific season, finishing 3rd overall at the State Championships. The team finished 2nd in the league of 12 teams, rounding out the season winning three out of eight meets.

Freshman Will Bertram ’21 led the team, placing 5th overall in the league. Lars Forsgren ’20 also finished in the top 10. The two were named Mass Bay East League All-Stars. Reed Abbott ’20, Henry Fleckner ’21, and Ryan Pitrus ’20 all qualified for the State Championships where team MVP, Will Bertram, placed 3rd overall in the state. Forsgren, Fleckner, and Abbott also cracked the top 40 out of 140 racers at the championships.

averian varsity ultimate disc completed another successful season. The team competed in the USA Ultimate Massachusetts State Championship tournament in Northampton on June 2. The Hawks went 5-0 on the day, defeating St. John's Prep to earn the title of Massachusetts State Champions. The Hawks wrapped up a 21-2 season and claimed a top 25 national ranking, as well as the state title.

Chopped Junior Champion Shares Culinary Talent at Xaverian

C

hristian Bonadio, an eighth grader in the Francis Xavier Division, already has an accomplished resume in the culinary arts, and all by the age of 14. Christian appeared on Chopped Junior and won, he’s taken the lead in launching the new Cooking Club at Xaverian, and he’s even started making and packaging his own barbecue sauce. Christian attributes this passion for cooking to his family, recounting how he began to help his grandmother in the kitchen on Christmas Eve at the age of five. “My parents and my two grandmothers really taught me how to cook and all I know now.” He says that his favorite style of food to make is Italian, “mostly pizza,” he adds.

This love for cooking brought Christian to new heights when he appeared on the Food Network’s Chopped Junior, an episode that aired in August 2016, just before Christian began at Xaverian.

Chopped Junior features four young chefs who cook their way through appetizers, main courses, and desserts using mystery ingredients. A panel of celebrity chefs judge these dishes until a $10,000 champion is crowned.

Christian cooked a seared pheasant appetizer, a main course of Peking duck served with the mystery ingredient, gummy brainshaped candies, and molten lava cakes for dessert. His talent in the kitchen led to his being crowned Chopped Junior champion.

Now, Christian is bringing his skills in the kitchen to Clapboardtree Street by starting Xaverian’s Cooking Club. Donna O’Connor, the Administrative Assistant for Advancement and Xaverian’s resident culinarian, serves as club moderator. Students have worked on a variety of cooking techniques this year, from scratch pizza dough to homemade sorbet. In April, they had the opportunity to speak to Angelo Sosa, a professional chef who was one of Christian’s judges on Chopped Junior. “I have been in contact with him ever since I’ve been on the show,” Christian says. “He is a really nice person who loves to give back to his community.” Sosa spoke to the group about his experiences as a chef and a business owner.

Outside of school, Christian bottles and sells his own barbecue sauce. “I came up with the sauce last year. I was making chicken

and wanted barbeque sauce to go with it, so I put a bunch of stuff in the pot. Once I started making it, people were telling me that I should sell it. I decided to do it more as a hobby rather than something to make money, so I started giving it to friends and family. In December, we went to a Christmas fair at my preschool, and we first started selling it there.”

Christian is in the process of permitting the sauce and hopes to begin selling it on Amazon soon.

As a regular viewer of the Food Network, Donna O’Connor says she saw Christian’s Chopped Junior episode before ever meeting him.

“What stood out the most to me, aside from his cooking talents, was that of all the contestants on the show, Christian was the most humble. He actually exhibited each of Xaverian’s values. When I was introduced to him, I let him know, ‘You were a Xaverian student before you even walked through our doors!’”

Servant Leadership in West Virginia

O

ver April vacation, I traveled to West Virginia to serve for a week at Bethlehem Farm as part of Xaverian Global Encounter (XGE). It was a trip I’ll truly never forget. Bethlehem Farm, a Catholic community, prides itself on the four cornerstones: community, simplicity, service, and prayer. Throughout the week, we experienced these as we immersed ourselves in an unfamiliar setting, prepared to help those in need.

The first stop on our journey was Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where we stayed the night before finishing the trek to the farm. Split between two large SUVs, packed to the brim with luggage, we settled in at the hotel before making our way to the battlefield. “Seeing the battlefield put everything into perspective,” said sophomore Lucas Sarkar. “It hit me that this was the place where the battle really happened, and seeing the sunset and grass fields was unique.” The next day, we went to mass at Saint Francis Xavier’s Church in Gettysburg, which once served as a field hospital during combat.

A beautiful stained glass window in the front of the church shows nurses tending to wounded soldiers. After that powerful experience in Gettysburg, we traveled to the farm and were greeted with the words “welcome home” from caretakers Eric and Colleen Fitts.

Eric and Colleen have invited groups to stay in their home for over 10 years, giving guests the chance to gain hands-on knowledge of serving others. Our Xaverian group was joined by a group from another Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School (XBSS), Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury. The first night before bed, a caretaker at the farm (who it turns out is a graduate of Malden Catholic, yet another XBSS), focused on those cornerstones of prayer, simplicity, community, and service. This set the stage. Through the next five days of work on the farm, each student would experience these in his own special way.

A variety of different service opportunities were offered throughout the week, ranging from home crew to working on the roof of a woman’s trailer. Home crew was no easy task.

We were in charge of cooking an organic risotto to serve over 30 people. This was in addition to cleaning the farmhouse, from washing the

bathrooms to folding laundry.

Another work site was a house about 40 minutes away from the farm, where students built a deck. Using chop saws, jigsaws, and many screws, little by little, floorboards and railings were put into place. This was not only a time to work, however; it was also a great time to get to know the caretakers. Sophomore Patrick McNamara said, “I had great conversations with the caretakers about faith and service, and doing good for others rather than for yourself.”

Working with Farmer Tim was one of the highlights of the week. His interesting past as a college football offensive lineman turned semipro mountain biker who lost 90 pounds in six months intrigued us all. His dog, Blackie, who is three-quarters wolf, barked goodbye to each group as we left every morning. Farmer Tim is a master of agriculture. He taught us about composting, bio-acceleration, and all about plants and anatomy. Through planting and weeding at local farms, students were able to get a better sense of what it is like to work on a farm without using artificial pesticides.

Shelli’s house was definitely a favorite for us.

We worked to build her a new roof, since the two-inch-thick existing roof on her trailer was leaking. Getting up onto the framework of the roof took balance and dexterity, but we got the hang of it after a while. Putting up pieces of the framework and working with impactors and drills 15 feet above the ground was certainly a new experience, and it demonstrated the trust that Bethlehem Farm has in the students who come to work there. With minimal training, students are able to make a difference in the lives of those in need because of the teachings and dedication of the Bethlehem Farm caretakers. And for this, I am grateful.

A Dream Come True at

O

n April 21, our Xaverian Hawks baseball team was offered the chance to take on St. John’s Prep at Fenway Park, America’s most beloved ballpark.

This was a dream come true for all of us, to be able to play on the very field that since 1912 has been home to the Boston Red Sox. This game, along with a Boston College vs. Florida State contest following ours, was brought to reality for charity. The doubleheader was played to spread awareness of ALS and to raise money for the Peter Frates Home Health Initiative.

It’s a cause close to both Xaverian and St. John’s Prep’s hearts. Pete Frates, a 2003 graduate of the

Prep, has been living with ALS for six years. He is responsible for igniting a cultural phenomenon by popularizing the “Ice Bucket Challenge” in the summer of 2014, ultimately raising more than $220 million worldwide in the search for a cure. ALS has also impacted the Xaverian community in a profound way. We lost a muchbeloved alumnus and assistant principal to ALS this October, Brother Raymond Hoyt, C.F.X. ’70.

As the team manager, I arrived at Fenway Park with the players and coaches about an hour before the game was scheduled to start. We got off the bus and were greeted by the Fenway event managers who brought us under the bleachers to wait until the field

was ready. Excitement built up to the moment that we walked onto the field where baseball legends like Ted Williams had played and our Boston Red Sox currently play.

I walked through the tunnels and I remember, as we reached the grounds crew entranceway,

seeing the monstrous defining characteristic of the park: the Green Monster. Seconds later I felt the crunch of the fine Fenway dirt under my shoes and was hit by the crisp morning air breezing across the field. I couldn’t believe where I was. It took at least five minutes

without a fight, loading the bases in the top of the seventh.

Coach Lambert brought in Doug Concannon ’19 (“Dougie Goggles” as we call him) to finish out the game. He retired the final two Eagles batters to clinch the win for the Hawks.

The experience was a tremendous one and will live on forever in the memories of the players and coaches, and even the fans. GO HAWKS!!!

for me to fully comprehend where I was standing, taking visual panoramas of the stadium. I stepped into the dugout, the home dugout, the RED SOX dugout, and placed my bags under the bench.

Then I took another few minutes to admire the enormousness and convenience of the bench and dugout area, and got up to stand against the dugout fence to take everything in. Closer to warm-up time, I went down the right-field line to the Pesky Pole area and played catch on the field that people only dream of playing on.

Soon the game was underway, and no matter how amazing this experience was, it was a rivalry game. Our squad came ready to execute plays.

We were 3-3 overall with a 1-1 Catholic Conference record. The Eagles came in with a 2-2 record, 1-2 in the Catholic Conference.

Right off the bat, the Eagles scored two runs on us and shut our offense down in the first inning.

This would not last, however, and our hitters were able to up the Eagles by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. Both teams would go on to play stellar defense for the rest of the game; our own Owen Langan ’18 striking out seven.

Coach Lambert told us before the game that while still doing our job on the field, we should stay in the experience and realize where we are - we should enjoy the moment. He actually had to remind me in the fourth inning or so. “Hey Josh,” he said, “Just so you know, we’re playing in Fenway Park.” I was so focused on the game even that reminder surprised me a little, and I took some more time to comprehend where we were standing.

Raiders Choose Maurice Hurst Jr. ’13

O

n Saturday, April 28, Maurice “Mo” Hurst Jr. ’13 received the call that he had been waiting for his entire life.

The Oakland Raiders selected him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft to strengthen their defensive line. Although a heart condition had pushed Mo, a star for Michigan and a projected first-round pick, to a much later round than he expected, he was nonetheless thrilled for the opportunity to play at the game’s highest level.

“I plan on using [the setback] as motivation and continuing to do what I’ve been doing as far as working hard, studying my material, and working on my craft,” Mo said. With the whirlwind experience of the draft now behind him, he is putting his focus on obtaining his goal of “ultimately becoming a great NFL player.” He called the opportunity to be a Raider a “dream scenario.”

Indeed, Oakland’s defense was the 12th best in the league last season against the run, and stopping running backs is Mo’s specialty.

“This is a great, great day for the Raiders,” Head Coach Jon Gruden told Hurst in a post-draft phone call. “We are really excited to add you to our team.

the only reason you’re still around in the fifth round is because teams have their question marks, but we got no doubts about you.”

Hurst, who says he knew he wanted to be a football player since the age of seven, starred on Xaverian’s varsity football team from 20092012. He excelled here on Clapboardtree Street, earning All-Scholastic honors and proving himself to be both a world-class talent and the ultimate team player. In true Xaverian fashion, he remembered that “one of the best moments of my Hawks career was beating St. John’s Prep my junior year and getting a win on Thanksgiving,” calling it “a memory I will never forget!”

He describes his Xaverian experience as essential to his success and says it helped him become the player he is today. “Being able to work with the great football coaches to establish a strong work ethic was key,” Mo said. And he adds, “having a strength and conditioning

program (that a lot of schools don’t have) helped make the difference in my performance on the field.” He advised current players to “always listen to the coaches and buy into the process, as there is a reason there have been so many successful players from Xaverian.”

Xaverian Head Football Coach Al Fornaro, who was the defensive coordinator during Mo’s dominating high school career, raved about his skills in an interview with the Boston Herald before the draft. He called him “one of the fastest kids I have ever had the chance to coach,” adding that “once the ball was moving, he was gone.”

After Xaverian, Mo moved on to Michigan, where he earned a scholarship and played in 46 games over his college tenure, amassing 134 tackles and 12.5 sacks. He was also brilliant in the classroom, and his hard work paid off with four selections to the Academic All-Big Ten list and graduation with a degree in sports management. “I wish we had more Mo Hursts,” Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters last season.

Despite the roadblock at the scouting combine, Charlie Stevenson ’69, Xaverian’s Director of Athletics and former head football coach, believes “the Oakland Raiders got the steal of the draft,” as Mo is “just one of those guys who loves to play football, and guys who love to play football find a way to make their mark. Surely, Mo will make his mark in the NFL.”

“W

ork as hard as you possibly can.” That’s the lesson Chris Wagner ’09 says was his most important takeaway from his time at Xaverian. “From the classroom to the rink, nothing I have really ever achieved has been given, but through hard work and some failures along the way, I have gotten to where I am today.”

Where he is today, is the NHL, most recently with the New York Islanders.

Chris and his brother, Paul Wagner ’12, grew up playing hockey. “Whether it be playing mini sticks in the basement, playing the newest NHL PlayStation game, playing down the street at the pond my dad would shovel off, or even watching Paul play at every rink across Massachusetts, we always loved the game and enjoyed playing it with each other,” Chris says. That love for hockey turned into a career, but it didn’t always look like it was headed in that direction for Chris.

“I was usually deemed too small or too slow to play in the next level,” he said. “It wasn’t until after I graduated Xaverian, when I was playing for the South Shore Kings, that I got the notion I might play pro one day. I started playing really well and we had NHL scouts at our games all the time because my teammate, Charlie Coyle, was ranked as a top prospect.”

Thanks to a great team around him escalating his play, Wagner impressed the scouts enough to enter the radar of NHL teams.

“I had been passed over in my first year of draft eligibility, when the preliminary draft rankings came out [for the following year].

I was ranked as a “B” player, which means that the scouts project

you to be drafted in the third to fifth rounds. I immediately ran upstairs and woke my parents up to tell them. Later [in 2010], I was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the fifth round.”

After an impressive two-season stint with the Norfolk Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the Ducks, Wagner was called up late in the 2014-2015 season. An all-star in Norfolk that year, he had notched 28 points and proved to be a physical force on the ice.

He only played in nine games in his first abbreviated NHL season, but he helped lead the Ducks to a 3-2 overtime victory against his hometown Bruins on March 26, leveling four hits in the win.

The following season was a roller coaster ride from being placed on waivers, spending a few months with the division rival Colorado Avalanche, back to waivers again, and a return to the Ducks. In the end, his hard work paid off, earning him a two-year contract extension with Anaheim after the 2016 season.

On Tuesday, January 30, 2018, Chris Wagner and the Anaheim Ducks stormed into the TD Garden and ended the Boston Bruins’ historic 18-game point streak with a 3-1 victory. This was more than just another win for Wagner. He played in front of a crowd full of friends and family and registered a team-high six hits that night. Less than a month later, the Islanders acquired Wagner to bolster their team’s depth for the stretch run.

Chris praises Xaverian Hockey Coach, Dave Spinale, for helping him along his path to the NHL. He called Spinale a great mentor and said he appreciated that he gave him the chance to play JV as a freshman. He has a lot of standout memories, but says, “I still

remember when Coach Spinale told me I was going to play against my hometown Walpole Rebels that year, and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for days,” Chris said.

“I can’t thank him enough for the hard work he put into coaching and still does.”

Wagner offered Spinale’s current Hawk hockey players some words of advice: “Enjoy every second you have with your

teammates and coaches,” he said.

“It goes by so fast, and you will never experience anything like high school hockey again. I still talk to and hang out with plenty of the guys I played with over 10 years ago, and we laugh at the same stories over and over again.

So enjoy it while you can, and leave everything you have on the ice. Go Hawks!”

Filling Big Shoes Getting to Know Xaverian’s New Athletic Director

T

ed Currle is taking the reins of Xaverian athletics from Charlie Stevenson ’69, beginning July 1. Though they’re big shoes to fill, Mr. Currle brings a wealth of experience to the role of Director of Athletics, coming from Norton Public Schools where he has served as the Athletic Director since 2013. He has competed as a high school and collegiate athlete himself, and brings 19 years of coaching, teaching, and athletics administration experience to the position.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Currle and find out more about his past experiences with athletics, his plans for the Xaverian program, and how he spends his leisure time.

How do you view the role of the student athlete?

I think being a student athlete is such a great thing; it definitely is an extension of the classroom. It is one of the most unique positions in any high school, because on a daily basis you may have the opportunity to welcome other teams to your own campus, as well as travel to theirs. It’s the administration’s job, and the director of athletics’ job, to make sure that our coaches and student athletes are upholding our school mission.

As a four-year, D-1 baseball player, I know that playing sports kept me from having too much free time, and taught me how to budget the time I had.

I am also a huge advocate of teams supporting each other, and not just at the football or basketball games. When I was the football coach, I would always have my team stop practice when the cross country meet ran by, and they would be screaming for all of their friends.

What is your favorite sport to coach?

I loved coaching football; something about the preparation and only playing once a week, leading up to that Friday night game - nothing was quite as exciting for me as a coach than a game under the lights. But it doesn’t have to be football; I do love coaching baseball and it is a passion

that I am going to miss. As an athletic director, I have grown to like all of these sports that I really never knew. I have learned so much about hockey, cross country, and track...you name it. I did coach varsity girls basketball for two years. One of my seasons was two wins and eighteen losses, and I think I worked harder that year than I ever did, even more than when I won a state championship.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I spend most of my time with my family. My wife, Sue, and I have been together since 2005. We have a four year old boy, Ben, and a one year old, William. That is a lot of our time, but if we get a chance, we love a good dinner and are into country music and going to the beach. We also spend time with her family and travel to Florida to visit mine on holidays. I also enjoy golfing when I can.

Ted attended The George Washington University where he studied business administration in the field of sports management. He earned an athletic scholarship for baseball and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team in 1998-1999. He coached football at Liberty High School in Virginia before making the move to Massachusetts and Norton High School in 2007.

The Importance of Passing It On

W

henever Maureen Bleday is asked to describe her dad, Edward T. Hanley ’46, she always begins with his days at Mission Church High School, the predecessor school to Xaverian.

“If you grew up in Mission Hill and went to Mission Church in Roxbury, then you probably went to Mission Church High School,” she explains.

“My dad was born in 1928, the son of a taxicab driver. Times were tough, but when he spoke about his childhood, he would light up when he told my siblings and me about his years at Mission High with the Xaverian Brothers.” Among the prominent figures from Mr. Hanley’s time at Mission High, Brother Rosarius, C.F.X., who worked with the athletic department, made a lasting impression. “My dad was always proud of the fact that he played on the Mission High football team. He was a lot smaller than the other guys and risked not making the team, so to make the weigh in, he filled his pockets with rocks. I’m sure Brother Rosarius knew exactly what my dad had done, but my dad made it on the team even so.”

For Maureen, this story is one of the many that reflect who the Xaverian Brothers were then and who they are today.

“The Brothers, like Brother Rosarius, just wanted my dad to become who he was meant to be,” says Maureen. “They asked nothing more of him. That’s truly special.”

Maureen’s father was a devoted (yet not a stellar) student in high school, but the Brothers saw his potential and instilled in him the importance of faith in everyday life and the value of hard work. After graduating from Mission High, Mr. Hanley joined the Navy, serving two years aboard a battleship before returning home and attending Bentley’s School of Accounting and Finance (now Bentley University).

From there, he attended Boston College Law School at night, earning his J.D. in 1962, and went on to hold two high-ranking jobs

in state government—Secretary Treasurer of the Massachusetts Port Authority and then Secretary of Administration and Finance.

Maureen is convinced that much of the success in her father’s life can be traced back to the support and encouragement he received from the Xaverian Brothers. Mr. Hanley cherished his relationships with the Brothers and fellow classmates and never missed the opportunity to reconnect with them at the Founder’s Day Mass and luncheon at Xaverian.

Having seen how central his Xaverian education was to her father’s life, Maureen was certain she wanted the same experience for her own children. Her three sons, Peter ’03, Alec ’06, and John ’10, all attended Xaverian Brothers High School and thrived here. “We were so fortunate to be able to send our sons to Xaverian. They received a wonderful education from teachers who were also great mentors to them, and they learned the importance of incorporating faith into their everyday lives. Although much has changed in education since my father’s years at Mission, the fundamentals of a Xaverian education and the care and support of the Xaverian community are still very much a part of the school.”

Today, Maureen, her husband, Ron, and her sons are still active members of the Xaverian

community. As a member of the Board of Trustees, Maureen is acutely aware of the need for scholarships to support low-income students from Boston — kids not unlike her father — who would otherwise be unable to attend Xaverian. “We so often talk about the importance of keeping a Xaverian education affordable. I know from my own experience that without a Xaverian education or the mentorship of the Xaverian Brothers, my dad could not have achieved all that he did in his life. Shouldn’t any deserving young man be afforded this same opportunity today?”

It was this sentiment that drove Ron and Maureen to establish a named scholarship as part of Called to Lead: The Campaign for Xaverian. Today, the Edward T. Hanley ’46 Scholarship exists to provide financial assistance to boys from the Mission Hill area of Roxbury and other urban Catholic schools. “It’s all about establishing a path to those enduring relationships for the next generation,” says Maureen. “In some small way, my family stands on the shoulders of those Xaverian Brothers and what they did for my dad. My hope is that this scholarship helps students like my dad continue that tradition.”

Xaverian Gala Raises $471,000 Rick and Cathy Roche, P ’11 Honored with the Xaverian Medal

ick and Cathy Roche, parents of Christopher Roche, a Xaverian graduate from the Class of 2011, were honored with the Xaverian Medal this March at Gala 2018. The Xaverian Medal is the highest honor bestowed by Xaverian Brothers High School.

Rick and Cathy have been tireless supporters of the school, serving on the Board of Trustees, volunteering in the advancement office, cochairing previous years’ galas, and much more. They have also been generous supporters of the school’s fundraising initiatives, all quietly done (often anonymously) without the desire for any public recognition.

“Throughout Xaverian’s history, God has raised up a few good people who have made an extraordinary impact. Among them are Rick and Cathy Roche,” said Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X., Xaverian’s Headmaster, during the medal presentation. “They help us understand that we are connected to something larger than ourselves.

They are an excellent example of how one family can positively impact the education of hundreds of boys. Paying attention to the goodness of people like Rick and Cathy helps us be more appreciative, understanding, and compassionate.”

Upon accepting the award, Rick and Cathy did something in keeping with their natures; they turned around and recognized others instead of accepting the praise for themselves. The Roches told the gala attendees that the campus ministers at Xaverian are the people who should be recognized. Of the five-person campus ministry team, Rick said, “I think that everybody realizes that they are the backbone and the foundation of a Xaverian education. I’d like to share our medal with them.” Bob Gill and Dr. Chad Puclowski ’98, both Xaverian campus ministers, took the stage at the Roche’s request to share in the Xaverian Medal award presentation.

Gala 2018 was attended by

hundreds of parents, alumni, faculty, staff, friends, and the Board of Trustees. It raised $471,000 to benefit the scholarship fund, bringing Xaverian’s total to more than $6.8 million over the 22 years of gala history.

Maria Stephanos, P ’18, WCVB news anchor and mother of Liam Stephanos, a senior, served as the gala emcee. Students volunteered in a variety of roles, including

waiting tables, coat check, and serving as greeters. During the “Fund our Future” portion of the evening, a blitz-style giving campaign, student peer ministers helped to collect nearly $65,000 in just minutes, all to benefit Xaverian’s campus ministry program.

They fanned out into the crowd, collecting pledges of support from the gala guests, shaking hands, and saying “thank you.”

Dana Barros ’85 Opens New Basketball Center Chuck Carmone ’85, P ’16, Director of Alumni, catches up with his classmate at the Dana Barros Basketball Club in Stoughton.

W

hen I first walked into the brand new Dana Barros Basketball Club, I couldn’t help but notice the massive 20-foot-tall logo of Dana dribbling. I met the president of the club, Pete Bosader, and the first question I asked him was, “Why is Dana in orange?” From

the side, I heard a familiar voice yell out, “What did you want me in, blue and gold?” It was my old classmate and teammate, Dana Barros ’85. He gave me his genuine big smile and hug.

It turns out his son, Jordan, is an artist and drew the iconic logo.

He chose orange because he lives in Easton. The new Dana Barros Basketball Club is in Stoughton (another town with orange colors) on the Easton line, and the club is enormous. It features five full basketball courts, and four can be used for volleyball. They are beautiful and loaded with stateof-the-art technology. Every court is digitally videotaped so that every game and practice can be recorded and stored, and coaches can watch their players instantly, or grandparents can watch games from Florida. Each court has a training room for Dana or a coach to bring in their team and review video. There is a huge concession stand that will serve the crowds when the facility is at full capacity.

It all makes sense. Dana loves basketball. But after 14 years of playing in the NBA, he is pursuing his second love, coaching. If you have ever seen him working at a

Xaverian basketball clinic, you notice that he not only loves coaching, but he’s really good at it. His office is covered with fourand five-foot trophies of different teams he’s coached to AAU national championships. With the recent rise of AAU sports, his facilities are a coach’s dream.

“I wanted to build the best facility in the region to not only help kids, but to work with anyone here - high school, D-I college prospects, and pros,” said Dana, who has been a special assistant to the Celtics since retiring and works with the younger Celtics’ players on ball handling, defense,

free throws, footwork, and his favorite, the three-pointer.

The former first-round draft pick of the Sonics and NBA all-star has a couple of gray hairs and says that, of course, he has slowed down since retiring. Now, instead of running a blistering 4.3-40-yard dash, he says he can only run a 4.5! He’s happy with his role with the Celtics, doing public appearances for the club and signing autographs, but even more satisfying is working with a 20-year-old draft pick on the finer points of the game. Now he has the ultimate playground to share his craft.

FXD Student Excels at Varsity Wrestling

E

ighth grader Mike Bobola eats, sleeps, and breathes wrestling. Following in his father’s footsteps, Mike has learned to balance an intense athletic regimen with academics, earning Ryken Honors at school and studying Russian math on the side. Mike is able to see how the discipline required for the sport translates into success off the mat. “I love the lessons it teaches me, from winning and losing, to the person I am today in school and life. It really taught me that hard work pays off and

you can achieve anything if you really work at it.”

This past year, Mike wrapped up his season on Xaverian’s varsity wrestling team with the title of Catholic Conference All-Star by

the Boston Herald. He also earned the title of Middle School AllAmerican and has ranked among the top in the state for his 113-lb. weight class at the varsity level.

school national competition in March and, after a grueling two days of back-to-back matches (winning nine contests in a row after his initial loss), Mike finished eighth in the nation.

Day of Giving Back

ore than 400 people came together on May 9, the second annual Day of Giving Back, to make a real difference in the lives of the young men at Xaverian.

The day was punctuated by Facebook Live videos featuring students growing Wisconsin Fast Plants in grade 7 science class, an Architectural Drawing student showing his composition of the Royal Ontario Museum, a trip down memory lane to the Xaverian lunch line, and poignant messages and reflections from dedicated faculty members. Generous challenge gifts given by John Deeley ’70 and Trustee Ned Kennedy ’67, which helped propel the community toward an incredible $30,000 increase in fundraising for the second year.

Perhaps the most heartwarming surprise from the day were the words written by the Xaverian community answering the statement “I’m giving back because…” These powerful responses echoed the reasons the faculty, staff, and administration dedicate themselves steadfastly to the school, the mission, and the students.

Congratulations to Phil Penza ’67 Phil Penza was inducted into the Mass State Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame on June 10. Mr. Penza has more than four decades of experience teaching and coaching at Xaverian. Charlie Stevenson ’69, Director of Athletics, says that Mr. Penza’s “coaching tenure at Xaverian has been remarkable and greatly appreciated.”

Mr. Penza was also honored by the TriCounty League, the members of which voted unanimously to name a race at the annual Tri-County League Championships after Mr. Penza. From here on out, runners will race in the Phil Penza 55-Meter Dash.

Jim Lazour recently retired from his dentistry practice in Arlington, Virginia, and he and his wife, Laura, are now living is Wilmington, North Carolina. Jim is spending his time relaxing, playing golf, doing yoga, and enjoying the beach.

CLASS OF 1971 CLASS AGENT: Mark Campisano Ted Bunnell and his wife Donna became grandparents for the seventh time to future Hawk Theodore Michael Bunnell, born on August 24. Theodore is the son of Ted ’99 and his wife Chrissy.

Paul Dowling was married on November 16. He is grateful for finding love again with his new wife, Lucy. They are both retired and in love with life and each other. They live in Mountain View, Missouri, and Paul sends his best to Xaverian Brothers High School.

CLASS OF 1975 CLASS AGENTS: Bob Ennis, Liam Fitzgerald, Steve Gill, John Holiver, John McGourty, John O’Brien Peter Betro has retired, closing the doors of Betro Pharmacy. The business was started by his father in 1952 and served the greater Walpole community for 65 years.

CLASS OF 1976 CLASS AGENTS: Dave Capobianco, John Forte, Gene Mahoney Dave Capobianco is one of the owners, as well as the COO of Atlantic Management Company, and it was recently named Landlord of the Year by the Greater Boston Real Estate Board. Atlantic Management currently controls about 6.5 million square feet of space across eastern Massachusetts, the vast majority of it in the suburbs. Last year, Atlantic Management teamed up with VMD Companies to purchase the 50-acre NECCO property in Revere, where they see future real estate promise near the Blue Line, commuter rail tracks, and the old Wonderland racetrack property. They also publicly revealed its purchase of the 66-acre former AstraZeneca property in Westborough.

The mission is to eventually reposition the suburban site, possibly into an R & D facility or for other commercial use, which would further solidify its reputation as the king of the

repositioning of suburban commercial properties at a time when so many other real estate concerns are focusing their attention on more urban ‘live, work, play’ transactions.

Dave Heikkinen will be a tenured professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at Fitchburg State University on September 1. Dave teaches biomechanics of sport, scientific foundations of strength and conditioning, motor learning and control of human movement, fitness management, and functional anatomy classes, to name a few. When Dave is not teaching, he enjoys mountain biking, fly fishing, and gardening. He is a nationally ranked Masters ski racer in the USSA Masters racing circuit. He, his wife, Jen, and lab, Piper, live in Whitinsville.

Steve Ritucci and his wife, Janna, have a three-yearold daughter and a son on the way. He recently moved home to Massachusetts from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a degree in rehabilitation medicine and is presently working on a spine fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital. Gregory Lusk received his master’s degree from Ohio University, and then went on to earn his Ph.D. in history and philosophy of science and technology at Toronto University.

Gregory is currently a visiting scholar in the University of Chicago’s philosophy department.

Michael DePesa is married with two children and living in Rochester. He works for SPS Cleantech, a provider of Cleanroom Solutions to the biotech, pharmaceutical, and life science markets.

Colin Foley married Sam McEwan in September of 2017, and four days later, he opened Widowmaker Brewing in Braintree, along with two partners. The brewery had its first expansion in February 2018.

Pat Gavin and Christi O’Toole were married on April 23, 2016 at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. They reside in Woodside, New York.

Tyler Jenkins is a project manager for Follett School Solutions. He and his wife, Melissa, live in Conshohoken, Pennsylvania.

Patrick Kelley spent a four-and-a-half-year stint in the United States Air Force, and then graduated with a B.S. in civic engineering from the University of South Carolina. He is currently employed at Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. in North Charleston, and he is continuing his military career with the South Carolina Air National Guard as a second lieutenant.

Alumni Hoops Tournament Was a Slam Dunk

averian’s Annual Alumni Hoops Tournament took place on May 12. Multiple generations of Hawks battled it out on the hardwood. In the end, the young hoopster trio of Billy Lahart ’16, Mike Gillespie ’17, and Kevin Baker ’17 won the overall tournament. Brian Barry ’93 won our firstever three-point shootout. Brian drained 11 three-pointers in 30 seconds for the win! NBA All-Star and three-point shooting legend, Dana Barros ’85, was on hand to watch the event and provide commentary.

Noah Klentak is employed as an international audit accountant at Boston Home Loan Bank. He is a CPA and a certified auditor. Noah is currently enrolled in an MBA program at Bentley University, studying financial economics and monetary policy.

Wayne L’Heureux is a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in the Framingham and Natick area. He and his wife, Kristina, reside in Framingham.

Darrin Lusk married Emily Dittrick of Fairfield, Connecticut. They have a daughter, Madison Grace, born in 2012. Darrin is an account manager in digital marketing at Primacy in Farmington, Connecticut.

Nate McMahan is a physical therapist at Teamwork Physical Therapy in Medway.

Greg Miller and his wife, Carolyn, are the proud parents of twin boys, Colbey Bryson Miller and Travis James Miller, born on June 10, 2017. Greg has been employed at 47 Brand in Westwood for the past three years.

Kevin O’Malley graduated from Bridgewater State University. He is married with two daughters, three years old and four years old. He is a trainer and the owner of a cross fit gym in Easton.

Steven Ryan graduated from Salve Regina in 2007.

He married Jennifer Paulicelli on November 18, 2016, and they are expecting their first child. Steven works for Loomis Sayles in Boston. He also referees high school football in the fall season. They reside in Halifax.

Ben Pope and Katherine Wong were married in June of 2017 in a ceremony at Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park. He works for Apple, Inc. as a manager and project lead for the iPhone product design team. Ben and Katherine reside in Mountain View, California.

Brock Leiendecker and his wife, Mallory, met at Providence College and were married in her home state of New Jersey in 2016. They recently purchased their first home in Franklin. Brock works as a preservation carpenter in eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, as well as teaching woodworking and turning at the North Bennett Street School in Boston.

Tom Carroll wed Geri Genant on February 18 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Vinny Milano is now employed at Tulip, a start-up company out of MIT’s media lab that enables end users to create custom manufacturing shop floor apps to automatically record data during the manufacturing process.

In addition, Vinny was married on December 31 to Victoria Wancel.

Andrew Stonionis is a senior associate for manufacturing at Amgen in Woburn. He resides in Methuen.

Dan McDonough is the long-term substitute teacher at St. Peter’s School in Cambridge. He assumes the responsibilities as the sixth grade homeroom teacher, ELA, math, and religion teacher, as well as teaching fifth grade math. Dan has a bachelor’s degree from Roger Williams University in educational studies. For the past six years, Dan has taught at the Cambridge Friends School, Marshall Simonds Middle School in Burlington, and Oak Middle School in Newton.

He is now working as a physical therapist for TB12. Joseph married Alexis Romano in October 2017.

James Pierre-Louis is a private equity associate at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP in New York. He and his wife, Jennifer, are looking forward to the birth of their son, Gabriel.

Michael Richer is a patrolman with the Newburyport Police Department. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Michael now resides in Kensington, New Hampshire.

Ryan Quillard is employed with the Education Advisory Board. He resides in Washington, DC. Brendan Raftery is head coach of the Bay State Speedskating Club in Walpole. One of his skaters, Julie Letai, qualified for the 2018 Olympic trials and competed on live TV on NBC in Salt Lake City in December 2017.

In January 2018, she placed second overall at the U.S. Junior Championships, earning a spot on the Junior World Team. She represented the United States at the Junior World Championships in Poland this past March. Brendan is employed at Millenium: The Takeda Oncology Company in Cambridge as a Q/A Specialist for Commercial Operations.

Brendan Sweeney and his wife Julia were married at the Popponesset Inn on Cape Cod in May of 2017. They reside in Quincy.

Anthony Tocchio is now employed as a colorist at Spotify.

Tim Fazekas is pursuing a Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

Andrew Dowding is a software engineer at Harris RF Communications in Rochester, New York, where he has been employed since graduating from Villanova University in 2014 with a bachelor’s of science degree in computer engineering. He resides in Fairport, New York.

Kevin Conley graduated from Lynchburg College in May of 2017 with a BA degree in international relations. He currently works for NATO as an engineering technologist at B.A.E. Systems. His career has focused on supporting naval sea systems command. His research and analysis work includes United States foreign policy, international trade, the European Union, and the United Nations.

Ryan Forte was recently promoted to Captain in the United States Army. He currently serves as a military intelligence officer at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

Joe Sullivan is going into his third season with Boston College football, where he is currently the director of recruiting. Previously, he was the director of basketball operations for Harvard men’s basketball. Joe was also the team manager while at Xavier University for their varsity basketball team.

He graduated in May of 2017 from the University of Notre Dame with majors in Spanish Literature and Chinese Culture and Language. The Army selected him for its Military Intelligence branch, but he has been detailed to the Infantry for the next three years.

Presently, Jackson is at Fort Benning, Georgia for a series of training courses including Infantry Basic Officer Leadership Course, Ranger School, and Stryker Leader’s Course. After completion of the Fort Benning training, he will be assigned to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Vilsek, Germany.

Patrick McCarthy graduated summa cum laude from the University of Massachusetts Boston Honors College in May of 2017. He is currently working in the theater department of UMass Boston while he is pursuing acting roles. Patrick recently played one of the lead characters, Tony Kirby, in the Milton Players’ production of You Can’t Take It With You. While at UMass Boston, Patrick was nominated for acting and playwriting, and he competed at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, where he went to the finalist round in April of 2017. Patrick currently resides in Marshfield.

DJ Pagliuica graduated from the Isenberg School of Management with a BBA and concentration in finance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He finished third in the All-New England Conference Championship in the triple jump. DJ is a senior associate for the finance rotation development program at State Street Bank.

Aidan Ricard graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May of 2017 and married Becky Hyatt in June of the same year. They reside in Coronado, California.

Scott Rotondi is employed at Morgan Stanley.

Pat Spinard graduated from the Boston College Carroll School of Management in the spring of 2017 with degrees in accounting and marketing. He began working with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLC this past October. Pat currently resides in Medfield.

John Young graduated from the Wentworth Institute of Technology in April with a Master of Architecture degree.

Nick Zais graduated from Quinnipiac University in May of 2017. He has been a licensed real estate agent since 2016. Nick was hired last July as a business development representative at PTC in Needham, where he was promoted to account executive in December of 2017. PTC, Inc. will be relocating to Boston’s Seaport District in early 2019.

They hope to have a journal publication within a year. Robbie was also accepted to Syracuse University’s chemistry graduate program and will be working toward a Ph.D. in organic chemistry throughout the next few years.

Adam Kozdrowicz is graduating this spring from Boston College and is excited to begin working as a consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers in the fall. When he is not busy with school, he is hard at work preparing to release his first app, FacePort, onto the Apple app store.

Justin Doo received the Corey C. Griffin Humanitarian Award at Boston Children’s Hospital’s Champions for Children’s event on November 28. The award recognizes a young philanthropist who embodies a passion for giving back and service to others. Justin’s decade-long mission to drive awareness and funds to the cause of moyamoya disease was the catalyst for his prestigious award.

Joey Crognale just completed his Worcester Polytechnic Institute interactive qualifying project in Venice, Italy. Reporting to the Venetian Tourism Department, Joe and his teammates worked to improve the current navigational methods of the historic city. Joe is pursuing a B.S. degree in chemical engineering with minors in biology and Spanish. He is a rower in the crew’s second varsity eight.

Jarad Maher is currently attending Boston College. He is also a realtor/agent at Maher Realty Group in Westwood.

Matt Rombalski is a district manager intern for ALDI USA. Timmy Sweeney competed in the Division 3 NCAA Frozen Four as a freshman right wing on the Salve Regina University men’s hockey team.

Former Xaverian Dean of Students, Jim Spillman, will leave his position as principal of Blessed Sacrament School in Walpole after eight years and return home to Buffalo as principal of his alma mater, St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, effective July 1. As such, his wife, Katie Spillman, is stepping down as Xaverian’s Director of Staff Formation. We wish the Spillman family all the best!

Daniel Leary ’01 is a detective with the Hingham Police Department and has obtained his master’s degree in criminal justice. He is married to Krista, who is a co-owner of Guilty Bakery in Plymouth. They have a three-year-old daughter, Perry, and a daughter, Kiera, born January 5.

Daniel and his family reside in Kingston.

Joe Trabulsie ’06 owns and runs a bed and breakfast in North Conway, New Hampshire called the Isaac Merrill House Inn. He and his girlfriend, Emma Allocco, are proud to welcome a baby girl, Ilana Moon Trabulsie, into the world. She arrived on February 22.

Jared Kelly ’04 and his wife, Jessica, welcomed their second son, Brady, into the world on October 24. Big brother Logan is three years old.

Eric Conklin ’07 and his wife, Briana, became parents to a girl, Magnolia Jean, on February 7. They reside in Cornelius, North Carolina.

Kevin Loftus ’05 and his wife, Megan, welcomed a baby girl, Shea Lynch Loftus, into the world on March 23. Kevin is the Director of Admissions at Xaverian.

Mark Hevert ’07 and his wife Kaelyn became the proud parents of a son, Westland Knight Hevert, born on February 16.

Mark is an English teacher at Xaverian.

Yet every year, the legitimate requests for aid far outstrip the funds currently available. With an endowed scholarship, you can help ensure that qualified students will have the opportunity to attend Xaverian and discover their unique, God-given gifts and talents.

Endowed scholarships of $50,000 or more will provide a named scholarship as part of Xaverian’s financial aid program.

Such gifts can honor or memorialize a family member, a friend,

an organization, or the benefactor. Each fall semester, donors are sent information about the specific students their generosity supports, as well as the investment performance of the fund.
