A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends, It might seem an odd choice to call a virtual gala “extraordinary,” especially given the truly elaborate and impressive in-person events we have hosted over the years for thousands of Xaverian supporters (We miss those days!). However, extraordinary is the only word that can aptly describe so much of the past year. Let’s start with you, our extraordinary community.

When COVID-19 hit, the Xaverian community rallied. We saw a multitude of heartwarming stories of our alumni, parents, grandparents, and students giving back to their communities.

Whether it was doctors and nurses, frontline workers, or volunteers, there were many heroes in our midst. When the financial implications of the pandemic hit, you united behind our Hawks Helping Hawks campaign to raise funds in support of scholarship, keeping Xaverian affordable for as many young men as possible. And when we announced that this year’s gala would be virtual instead of in-person, you nonetheless stepped up as sponsors, donors, and attendees for this special event. We are so grateful for your support. Your generosity makes a difference in the lives of our students, as you’ll see during our gala program.

That said, when we picked “extraordinary” as our theme, we were first thinking about our 2021 honorees...Xaverian’s own faculty and staff. Their efforts over the past year have been unparalleled. Due in no small part to their dedication and ingenuity, last March we lost no time pivoting to a remote platform as the nation locked down. After an unprecedented spring, our faculty continued serving our students as they collectively worked through the summer by offering over 115 online courses to all Xaverian students, all while preparing to reopen for the fall. At the same time, the maintenance staff, nurses, and committees of teachers, administrators, and medical professionals from within our community, worked tirelessly together to create health and safety guidelines to ensure the well-being of all at Xaverian. When the calendar turned to September, Xaverian was ready, rolling out a comprehensive reopening plan and, at last, welcoming students back to campus.

Throughout the school year, our teachers, counselors, coaches, and staff have continued to adapt, learn, and support one another, as they inspire and care for our young men. In these extraordinary times, they have gone to extraordinary lengths, showed extraordinary effort, and exhibited extraordinary compassion.

As we launch our first-ever virtual gala, thank you for joining us to celebrate our faculty and staff and to support our young men through the scholarship fund. Know that we pray for our entire Xaverian community and for God’s continued blessing over our extraordinary school.

Last year, honors English was a struggle for me. English this year has been a whole different story.

MR. MAGUIRE’S fun and entertaining personality, combined with his remarkable ability to tell stories and explain what’s going on in class, has made English one of my favorite courses. He gives me access to accommodations that fit my learning and provides feedback to help me become a better writer. I feel my language skills have greatly improved this year. Mr. Maguire manages to make the course a good time for remote school kids. He does trivia questions to engage students and make class more fun. To start, he got an audio recorder so that we can hear exceptionally clearly when he is teaching. Mr. Manning also educated us about the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine and their effectiveness through the material we were learning in class. Through this lesson, I was able to better understand vaccinations, their efficacy, and why some individuals may be hesitant to take them. He also got a whiteboard inside his house and went the extra mile to ensure we understand all class concepts. I learned so much in this class, and I am incredibly thankful for Mr. Manning.

MR. TASSINARI has been very helpful especially given this year's unique circumstances.

Since I am a remote student, certain aspects of testing—specifically multiple choice—has been a challenge because there are strict rules on sharing AP Physics multiple choice questions. However, Mr. T worked hard to find alternate resources and material so I would be fully prepared for the AP exam. Mr. T is also the moderator for the Aerospace Club, and I enjoy his enthusiasm for model rocketry. When the club took a tour of the Maker Space, Mr. T carried his laptop around so I could experience the tour with the in-person members.

MR. BRENNEN has been a great teacher this year. Despite being fully remote, Mr. Brennen makes his class engaging and exciting. He understands the difficulties of remote learning and makes sure to help us immensely to be prepared for the test. I often need help after class, and Mr. Brennen stays and helps me while being available for other extra help during free blocks and after school. Mr. Brennen’s teaching style has made French a smooth class for me this year, and I appreciate his effort.”

MR. D’AMATO has has been extraordinarily helpful and committed to his students’ success throughout this school year. I’m a new student to Xaverian, and I’m taking AP Chemistry. Mr. D’Amato, in his first year teaching the course, is always open to answer questions and will go out of his way to help all of his students with work. He will schedule Zoom calls on weekends, takes time off his lunch breaks for extra help, and gives the class a very collaborative, uplifting environment.
