The Dakar Rally is one of the biggest challenges out there for man and machine.

Not only the race cars covered thousands of kilometres, but also the support vehicles, which transport the team members.

Since 2010, the MINI Countryman has been a member of the X-raid service fleet. Like the race cars themselves, they too must be ready for this challenge.

THE MINI C O U N T RY M A N AT T H E DA K A R R A L LY The support cars may spend most of their time on public roads, but at the Dakar, these are not always tarmacked or in good condition. Potholes and gravel stretches are part and parcel of the event. In South America, for example, the cars had to cover hundreds of kilometres on gravel routes with sharp-edged stones as they crossed the Andes from Argentina to Chile.

Over the years, the MINI Countryman has visited some of the most extreme locations imaginable. It has battled through thin air at altitudes of more than 4,000 metres in the Bolivian Highlands, the heat of the Atacama Desert, the Argentinean Pampas, along the stunningly beautiful “Ruta 40”, through extreme humidity in Paraguay, and the Empty Quarter in Saudi Arabia. The experience gained on site is incorporated in the preparation of the support vehicles, which have been the subject of continuous modification in recent years at the company headquarters in Trebur.

For example, the MINI Countryman was lifted, in order to avoid damage on the poor South American roads and to improve driveability.

X-raid had repeatedly struggled with punctures – particularly when crossing the Andes. For this reason, the team decided to use tyres with higher sidewalls and more robust rims. X-raid further has chosen a rim ring, so that they would not have to replace the entire rim if they suffered damage. This also allowed them to conceal the height of the tyres.
