The Independent Mortgage Store reaches a milestone this year by celebrating its 20th anniversary in the west end.

Paul McGowan, the company director and owner, has now been working in the west end for over 30 years and is probably the longest standing Independent mortgage broker in the area. In fact he is known as one of the grandfathers of the mortgage industry in Glasgow.

Paul started as an independent financial adviser in 1987 after leaving Glasgow University, however 1989 he chose to specialise his career and focus on the mortgage market. In 1998 he took the big step to start his own company and opened up the Independent Mortgage Store on Byres Road proving to be busy from day one. Paul purposely kept the company small to give a boutique experience and ensure that clients always had the personal touch with great customer service. Laura Carson his office manager has been with the company right from the beginning and had an encyclopaedic memory for clients. She remembers everyone. Now 20 years on and after placing literally thousands of mortgages the company is busy assisting the children of their original clients.

Paul stated ‘’It proved a wise business model to keep the company small so we could focus on our clients.

In the 20 years I’ve been on Byres Road I’ve seen many changes with a huge turnover of companies accelerated in particular by the credit crunch 2007.

ever’’ Of course the industry has changed dramatically over the years with continuing changes to mortgage criteria. In addition house prices have spiralled over the years. Paul recalls when he started working in the west end you could buy a flat in Partick for £5,000 and specifically recalls the first flat in Hyndland selling for £30,000 with people being stunned that someone was willing to pay that much for a 1 bedroom property.

Mortgage interest rates have of course peaked and troughed over those years. On the 2nd November 2017 the Bank of England raised the base rate from 0.25% to 0.5% - the first rate rise in over a decade. It is likely to rise twice more over the next three years, according to Bank of England governor Mark Carney.

Haggis Mac‘n’Cheese Preparation time - 30 mins to 1 hour Cooking time - less than 10 mins Serves - Serves 4-6

Ingredients

Method

For the macaroni cheese

1. For the macaroni cheese, preheat the grill to its highest setting.

• 300g/10½oz dried macaroni • 40g/1¾oz butter • 40g/1¾oz plain flour • 500ml/18fl oz milk • 100g/3½oz blue cheese, preferably mild gorgonzola, grated or finely diced • 150g/5½oz cheddar, grated • 100g/3½oz Mull of Kintyre cheddar, grated • ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg, or to taste • 120g/4oz haggis, chopped • 100g/3½ mozzarella, chopped • 75g/3oz fresh breadcrumbs • 25g/1oz freshly grated Parmesan • large handful fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped, to serve

2. Cook the macaroni in a large saucepan of salted, boiling water according to the packet instructions.

3. Meanwhile, in a separate saucepan, heat the butter until melted, then whisk in the flour until smooth and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until pale golden-brown.

4. Whisk in the milk a little at a time, waiting until the mixture has thickened after each addition before adding any more and whisking continually. After all of the milk has been added to the mixture, you should have a smooth sauce with the consistency of double cream.

5. Add all of the blue cheese, 100g/3½oz of the cheddar and all of the Mull of Kintyre cheddar to the sauce and heat gently, stirring all the time, until it has melted. Season, to taste, with salt, freshly ground black pepper and nutmeg.

6. Drain the cooked pasta and tip it into the pan containing the cheese sauce.

Stir well to coat the pasta. Set aside.

7. Dry-fry the chopped haggis in a frying pan over a high heat until golden-brown and crisp. Stir it into the macaroni cheese mixture.

8. Transfer the macaroni cheese to a large ovenproof dish and top with the chopped mozzarella, breadcrumbs and Parmesan. Grill for 2-3 minutes, or until the topping is golden-brown and bubbling.

Mothering Sunday –

let’s make a day of it...

In this crazy, fast world let’s take time to celebrate a tradition and a person we know and love.

By Joanne Simms In a world where everyone gets their own day let’s go back to basics and really, truly, celebrate the one of the days, and people, we know and love the best.

It seems now that every day is spoken for. Turn on the radio and you will hear its British baked bean day or the international day of the iguana.

So here and now, let us stand up for one of the original and best, Mother’s Day. Whether you have your mum and dad or just got your mum; being raised by married together mums, got another mother through your brother, or a mummy but not from her tummy, let’s celebrate them all.

Home life today comes in a staggering, sometimes bewildering, number of combinations but there is something that is always there: love and its best friend joy. In the rush of modern life this is one occasion when a tweet or an emoji simply will not do.

Turn up, be in the moment and share your love for each other.

All cultures and ancient religions have a celebration of woman, fertility and mother in some form or another and here in the UK Mother’s Day is the fourth Sunday in Lent, this year March 11.

In the Christian tradition, it began as the day you returned to your ‘Mother Church’ where you were baptized; your employer was obliged to give you time off.

POWER OF ATTORNEY WHY DO I NEED ONE? I qualified as a solicitor in 2005. At that time any applications for Guardianship Orders that were made to Glasgow Sheriff Court were dealt with by one particular Sheriff and the hearing took place in his personal Chambers. Now, in 2018, due to the number of applications for Guardianship Orders that are made to the Court in Glasgow, all guardianship hearings take place in court rooms and there are several Sheriff’s who are allocated to deal with these types of hearings.

This situation of increased applications being made for Guardianship Orders applies to Courts throughout Scotland. The process of applying for a Guardianship Order is also now lengthy, as in order to apply for a Guardianship Order, certain reports are required.

Again, due to the number of applications that are now being made, the amount of time that you will have to wait for certain reports to be prepared can be months.

Previously these reports were prepared immediately on request. Guardianship Orders are applied for on behalf of adults when the adults do not have or do no longer have capacity to make welfare and/or financial decisions, due to conditions such as dementia and learning disability.

Whilst we can fully assist with applying for a Guardianship Order the best solution is that family/ friends are never required to apply for such an order on the adult’s behalf. In situations where an adult has capacity, and prior to losing that capacity, he or she can apply for a Welfare and/or Financial Power of Attorney.

In doing so, the adult has the benefit of selecting who they wish to be their Attorney and selecting the specific powers that their Attorney will have.

This is a comparatively quick and straight forward process. It provides the nominated Attorney with the same powers as a Guardianship Order.

Once a Power of Attorney is made you have the West End Life Magazine

peace of mind of knowing that should you ever lose capacity, you have arranged for someone you trust to immediately make decisions on your behalf. In relation to welfare matters, your nominated Attorney will never be able to make these type of decisions on your behalf unless you lose capacity.

Climate is what we expect, weather is what we get!

Every time I sit down to write the gardening column, I find myself thinking about the weather.

Anyone who knows me will already be aware that I frequently moan about the weather. It can be the weather that day, what has just passed or what is on the horizon, I will have something to say about it and it is often negative.

In truth, I make no apologies for this. The weather is such a big part of our everyday lives, more so if you are an active gardener and even more important when you run a business that is weather dependant!

The winter to date has been the coldest for a few years. We rarely get much snow on the ground at Cardwell, mainly because we are at sea level and only a couple of hundred metres from the Clyde itself. If it is snowing at Cardwell, you can be sure it is snowing much heavier further inland.

We have seen snow of around 4 inches/10cm a few times already this winter and it is still January! During December the ground was frozen solid for several days here and this level of frost and snow can cause both structural and cosmetic damage to the garden.

On the plus side, after the ground has been frozen for a prolonged period, the soil itself will be very soft once it has thawed out. This is an ideal time to dig it over, add rotted manure or other soil conditioner.

Trees and bushes may have suffered broken branches, either under the wieght of snow or by the strong winds that we have experienced. Where this is the case, the branch should be completely removed and the open wound that is left should be made smooth with a saw or similar tool. It can then be sealed with a pruning compound which will prevent disease or further damage from happening.

In some cases where the branch is still attached and has only minor damage, it is possible to rescue the branch using appropriate support (a tree stake or by tieing to an existing higher branch) and sealing the damage and ‘bandaging’ with raffia or similar. This is not guaranteed to work and in most cases it is best to remove the damaged parts.

If you have a lawn I would not do much to it just yet.

You may see some signs of growth during March, if it is mild, but please do not be tempted to cut it.

Unlike most other plants in your garden, the lawn takes punishment all year round.

In winter, especially if there is snow, the lawn can become a playground for kids eager to build snowmen and have snowball fights. Likewise, in summer it is a football pitch or similar.

When you think about it, you would not walk on top of any of the other plants in your garden, particularly when they are frozen!

Your lawn is exceptionally tough though, and with a little care will recover from the harsh winter. With the soil being soft under the lawn, and there being plenty of rain around, it may be worth taking an aerator or garden fork to the grass to improve drainage. Holes created can then be backfilled by sweeping coarse or sharp sand over the lawn. Please make sure if you buy sand for this that it is properly washed and not just builders sand. This will do more harm than good.

Feeds and other treatments for the lawn should not be used until at least April when the temperatures have warmed up.

Finally, even though the weather may still be cold, you can still start planting some early spring and summer bedding plants in tubs, baskets and borders. Just make sure anything you plant just now will be hardy enough to cope with the odd cold night and a touch or frost. @westendlife

Perhaps you’ve recently started a New Years fitness regime, maybe you’ve already stalled during the process, or, there’s a high chance that like me, you’re still just thinking about it. Either way, physically active or not, sportswear in its many guises is something we all now choose to wear. There’s even a name for it - Athleisure.

It’s just recently been included in the dictionary and its definition is this: A style of clothing worn as athletic apparel but also suitable for casual, everyday wear.

The active sportswear market really is a fashion force in its own right and everything connected with sportswear from hair accessories to bags and fitness trackers to water bottles are now big business. Don’t even get me started on trainers - they are a whole other fashion story just on their own!

There’s also the lucrative ‘Health and Wellbeing’ side to this trend with cosmetics and skincare aimed especially for the active consumer and clean, healthy eating foods all experiencing a huge uptrend.

With Sportswear currently outpacing other clothing sales in the global apparel industry and still growing at an exceptional rate it seems that everyone wants a piece of the sporty pie! This is all good news for the consumer as we get a huge selection of garments to choose from and at prices to suit all. From the more expensive upmarket brands like Lululemon

Athletica, Sweaty Betty and Fabletics, to the traditional Nike, Adidas and Under Armour, all the way to the high street, with brands like H&M and M&S battling it out with the major supermarkets. All retailers now recognise that men, women and kids want quality, good looking sportswear that they can purchase readily. What’s more, it’s been proven that looking good whilst working out encourages us to attend and perhaps more importantly, continue with our chosen physical activity, and as we get fitter and firmer the desire for more sportswear increases as understandably, we want to show off our hard-earned results in new kit.

Athleisure - it’s here to stay. Of course, it’s up to you how you choose to interpret it but with fashion and fitness going hand in hand it’s now perfectly acceptable to wear sports clothes out with the confines of the gym and we can all take advantage of this and get on with our busy lives in style and comfort. As an added bonus, while it’s still so cold outside, to finish off the overall look we get to just throw on a cosy big coat and a stylish scarf. Good to go!

Local Artist Launches Solo Exhibition in MP’s Office As part of the ‘Local Artists Project’ set up to support rising creative talent in the Glasgow North constituency, Patrick Grady, MP, is delighted to announce Kay Nicolson will be showcasing her art work in his constituency office at Unit 1 Firhill Business Centre, 74-76 Firhill Road G20 7BA until the beginning of March.

Kay’s colourful paintings have a dream-like quality, suggestive of fairy tales and mysterious places. The magical elements of the moon and stars illuminate the narrative, creating a mystical fantasy world. A selection of Kay’s pieces feature Glasgow architecture and some have a subtle Scottish theme.

Patrick Grady said: “The creative and ethereal spirit of Kay’s work is truly unique, and it’s a real pleasure to have her artwork on display. In particular her depiction of the iconic Glasgow Coat of Arms, entitled “A Tree, A bird, A Bell & A Fish”, is stunning, and really brings the spirit of Glasgow to life. I know that passers-by will enjoy viewing Kay’s work, and I hope the display highlights not only her own artistic talent but the wealth of talent we have in Glasgow North.”

Commenting on taking part in the Local Artist project, Kay said: “I’m delighted to have a solo exhibition in the constituency office. It’s great to be part of a project that highlights creative talent, and to have local display which anyone can drop by and view.”
