JUST THE TICKET Iain Ferguson Fort William Parking Enforcement Officers deliver food and medicines to at risk homebound.

Husband and wife Rick and Nicola Stephen had barely taken up their roles as Parking Enforcement Officers and moved in to their new home in Fort William, when the COVID-19 crisis and lockdown meant not writing out parking tickets but instead, the addresses of people in need of assistance right across Lochaber.

With the advantage of not having to maintain a two metre distance from each other, as other employees would have to, the couple have been using their council vans to pick up and deliver groceries and medicines to people who do not have any other means of getting them.

Originally from Denver, Colorado, Rick has been in the job for three years patrolling the streets of Inverness, with occasional visits to Fort William, while Nic took up her post in January. Even in the short period until lockdown the pair were already becoming known in the town for the their friendly, understanding and helpful attitude to motorists.

Rick said: “Our role is not to catch people out, but parking regulations and restrictions exist for a reason and have to be upheld within the legal requirements and that is our job.

However within that we always

try to be as helpful as possible by explaining things to people and helping them to understand what is actually wrong with parking where they have.

“As individuals we want to be very much be part of the community we live in and will do our very best to help people.

In return I must say that so far everyone has also been very friendly back.”

In preparation for the influx of tourists, Rick and Nic had picked up a number of maps from the tourist office, which they often find helpful in showing visitors where they can park and how to reach them (often as well as giving advice on local attractions). Now they are using maps in a different way as they take vital items to people across Lochaber, for example making trips between both Duror and

Roybridge as housebound individuals needed urgent supplies.

They, like many other local council employees, are working as part of the Highland Council’s overall coronavirus resilience strategy, responding to public need [May Lochaber Life, p5] which came into play immediately after the lockdown, working with community groups to ensure no one, especially those in high-risk categories, is left without access to food and medicines.

“This is a very difficult time for everyone,” said Nic. “We are delighted to have a role in looking after the needs of people and will carry on as long as is necessary – as one lady we delivered to said when she recognised us – ‘you’re just the ticket!’.

JUMBLED UP JUNE Normally June is a month when most people are preparing for their holidays, schools are winding down and exam nerves are increasing for senior students.

However, this June will be very different, with lockdown still in place and people asked to stay safe by staying at home and not making physical contact with those outside their immediate family. This advice has also had an effect on Lochaber Life which for the first time in its history will appear as a digital edition only. If you are reading this, then you have successfully used the online link. Can I ask you to check among your friends and family if they are also able to view this and assist them to access the magazine if you can. BIRD IN THE BELFORD Letter to the Editor from Donnie MacLeod

How bizarre can things get?

Having just finished work, and on arriving home I got the May edition of Lochaber Life in my post box. Having poured a glass of wine, I was sitting down to read it when I turned to page 20/21 and almost choked. CARRY ON NATURE. Just before leaving work around 7pm a bird flew in the back door of the hospital right next

to my office. I have witnessed this type of behaviour before, mainly in the winter, and the distress it can cause the bird. I shut the doors that would have led it onto the main part of the wards. My first reaction was not to stress the bird – can you imagine if it got near the wards, seeing the staff dressed in their PPE? It would freak it out.

Not to mention the the staff.

I got some bread crumbs and put a trail towards the back door hoping my little bit for ornithology worked and little No.9 would be glad to see the light of day.

PS. We can tell Hughie from the Volly; he might serve Grouse but the Belford serves No.9s.

BRIGHTER SIGNS Iain Ferguson Looking through many posts on social media I see a recurring theme of people using the enforced time at home to give everything a good spring clean or spruce up, but Inverlochy window cleaner Stephen Cameron took this idea quite a bit further.

Largely unable to clean windows due to lockdown restrictions, Stephen had an idea of cleaning the street signs in the villages, many of which had become a bit grubby. Having done this he kept noticing several others which could do with a clean, so when he had to make journeys he would load up his van with cleaning materials and give the road signs a wash when he was out.

In the course of a few weeks he managed to work his particular sparkle across almost the whole of Lochaber and a bit beyond, leaving shining examples of his work from Fort August to Duror and westward

towards Mallaig. He said he was always very conscious that he was near to the roads and was very careful to park safely and not in the way of any traffic, albeit that traffic was particularly light with people staying at home.

As an example of his dedication, to clean the ‘Welcome to Lochaber’ sign just past Bridge of Oich, he had to park around half a mile away, reverting to ‘hand powered’ bucket and sponge rather than his powerful water jet machine to clear the grime.

“I noticed that many signs

were in need of a clean,” said Stephen. “Some were so dirty you could hardly make them out, especially ones which would be of interest to visitors, who will hopefully be coming back at some point. As I had the time and the resources, I thought it would be a good idea to at least brighten up a few things during these less than happy times.”

His work also brightened up a few faces as people tooted and waved to him with thumbsup gestures as they drove past, praising him for a doing a ‘brilliant’ job.

PLOUGHING THROUGH LOCHABER AGRICULTURAL SHOW HISTORY Iain Ferguson Lochaber Agricultural Show has played a big role in community life for many decades, with many memories of past times firmly lodged in people’s minds. Now Isabel Campbell, who was herself Show Secretary for 27 years is asking everyone to share these thoughts and even better – pictures to create a permanent record the events’ history.

Isabel and Richard Sidgwick, who has a long involvement with estates across the area, have pooled their collections of newspaper cuttings, pictures and memorabilia creating large albums and display boards tracing the activities over the years.

There is on display a cutting from the Inverness Courier of January 30, 1879:

‘Lochaber Agricultural Society – On Friday last a public meeting was held in the Alexandra Hotel, FortWilliam, for the purpose of forming a club, which it has been agreed, is to be called Lochaber Agricultural Society’... ...’A large Committee of Management was formed composed of farmers and others from various parts of the district. It was resolved that the annual subscriptions be £1 for ordinary members, and £5. 5s for honorary members, that an annual show of stock be held at a suitable place near Fort-William; and that it be remitted to a committee to secure a horse to travel the district.’

All went well until the First World War when the show

was halted for the duration, the last show after this being in 1927, followed by a long pause until August 1955, when the ‘reborn’ event attracted 226 catalogue entries.

A large Committee of Management was formed composed of farmers and others from various parts of the district.

These included, according to a report in the Scottish Farmer: ‘A display of garden produce from the housing schemes in Fort William and Inverlochy.’

From then, the show became not only a showcase

for the excellent ‘home-grown’ agricultural achievements, but also a great family day out. Located for many years in the ‘Town Park’ where the Leisure Centre now stands, thousands of people flocked to the event which offered many exciting attractions and entertainments for all ages.

Typical of a country show, crafts, jams and baking all had a major part to play, alongside the skilful demonstrations of

sheep shearing, sheepdog trials, pony parades and judging of the best animals.

Over the years novelty attractions were introduced, such as fancy dress, knobliest knees and even the man with the fluffiest chest hair, the latter of which was judged by actress Mary Riggans (Effie from Take the High Road). There were also pet competitions, schools’ shinty competitions, music from various local performers and showground rides, all helping to make a day of non-stop activities to hold the interest of all ages.

A huge range of newspaper cuttings, programmes and results has been put together and currently being catalogued by Isabel and a small band of volunteers. They would like to feature pictures or materials from individuals who may have attended over the years, adding even more personal experiences

to the overall collection.

It is hope that will be on permanent local exhibition so that members of the public from far and wide can appreciate the very important community role of the Lochaber Agricultural Show and help to secure its future.

Pete O’Neill - Managing Director & Funeral Director Pete held office as CEO of one of the UK’s main funeral planning companies, and also CEO of SAIF (The National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors). In addition Pete is a former Chairman of The Funeral Ombudsman Scheme and a founding director of the Funeral Planning Authority(FPA).

After leaving school, he became a Laboratory Technician with The Coal Board, reporting on death caused by lung disease. He then went on to study Biological Sciences at university, where he met his wife Tracey. He continued with a post graduate MBA. He holds a Certificate in Funeral Service, accredited by the University of Greenwich and the BIFD. The O’Neill family has lived in Barcelona, California, Arizona, and Scotland. They have settled in Newtonmore, and have two sons, Fraser and Finlay.

Pete, working together with his staff, is passionate about continuing the quality of care that has been McLellan’s trademark for almost 100 years.

He is an accomplished golfer, keen on rugby, and enjoys spending time with family cycling, cooking and walking.

John Flannigan Principal Funeral Director John was born and brought up in Caol, Fort William. He attended Lochaber High School, where he left to become an apprentice joiner with John McLellan Funeral Directors. He was a keen football player in his younger days and is a passionate Leeds United supporter, and travels frequently with friends to games at Elland Rd. John completed his joinery and funeral apprenticeships with John McLellan and continued to work with McLellan’s in the funeral business. We are proud to say he is Lochaber’s Longest serving Funeral Director with over 45 years at McLellans.

In 2000, John started his own business, Flannigan Joinery, and is well known far and wide in the Lochaber community. He brings to our team a wealth of funeral experience. He has an unrivalled knowledge of the traditional aspects of the funeral business. People often comment on the respectful way John and his McLellan colleagues distinguish themselves during funerals. He is also very familiar with local customs and traditions in our Lochaber and Highland communities.

John has been married to Lorraine for 35 years and has 2 children, Bradley and Rosie. He takes great pride in his garden, and also the ongoing renovation work in his own property.

John enjoys baking and walking.

LOCKDOWN LAUGHS Iain Ferguson Staying free of the COVID-19 virus is a very serious undertaking, but happily most people are following the guidelines and restricting contact to ensure it does not spread. However, as this no doubt will (and has) led to some ‘tension’ it can also not be without a few unexpected laughs.

From my own experiences over the past few weeks there have been one or two moments which certainly raised a smile.

Grassy grub: We had just been discussing that it would soon be time to cut the grass outside the living room window, looked out and there were two sheep munching their way towards us. We have the odd visiting deer (that’s another story), but rarely woolly friends.

A fascinating watch as the ladies grazed along, until at the end of the grassy bit (I wouldn’t call it a lawn) one squeezed through a tiny gap in the fence, did a 180 degree turn and climbed the steps to the front door where she stood peering through the glass, as though waiting to get in.

Next day they brought friends, with four sheep enjoying lunch. However, this time they frightened the mouse living in the undergrowth beside the steps

as he ran up the wall, turned round and came face to face with a sheep before instantly vanishing in a lightning fast retreat back to his house.

Tadpole time: On regular walks up the Peat Track we watched a deep puddle full of frog spawn gradually shrink as dry weather arrived (at last) so we collected some, taking it home to help at least a few develop. The puddle continued to shrink but had become a seething mass of tadpoles with no hope of survival. We soon returned with rescue equipment (well, glass jars), gathered as many as possible and rehomed them in a bucket of burn water.

Thinking that people may wonder what on earth we were doing, we met a neighbour with a sieve and bag full of jars, who said: “I’m just on the way up to rescue the tadpoles. I’m so glad you’re also doing it because I was worried people would think I had gone mad!”.

Denture debacle: One of the more unusual finds on the Peat Track – a set of dentures lying in the grass beside the path. I put a bit on social media, but as they are still there, obviously belonging to someone on a soft food diet!!

Be Aware: Share To Care Jo Cowan The ways in which people throughout our communities have risen to current challenges in such a short space of time are truly amazing. But keeping people well informed in such a sudden and rapidly changing scenario is a challenge – particularly in reaching people who are not online, or who don’t use social media.

News on how to keep safe and well, on what we should and should not be doing, has been prominent in national media – but many practical things people need to know are very local: who can provide help, support, information and advice, and how you contact them; which services and businesses are still operating; how you can access the basic necessities of life – food, medication and fuel?

Local newspapers, Lochaber Life magazine, Nevis Radio and community newsletters do a great job of keeping people in the loop. Community support groups have made door-todoor leaflet drops, and set up local phone helplines, to ensure that people don’t miss out on help and support.

However, much information, about shops, home delivery options, access to GP surgeries and other services, comes by e-mail, or is on Facebook and websites – and people who

aren’t online, or aren’t on Facebook, may well be unaware of what’s happening. Even those who are online have had difficulty keeping up. This isn’t a criticism of organisations and businesses – it’s just a fact of life, and a growing trend.

Not having information can lead to people feeling powerless and isolated – especially just now when many folk can’t go where they would usually pick up on information: the shops, library, lunch clubs, activities, leisure centre, hairdressers, pubs etc.

Highland Senior Citizens Network is encouraging individuals, organisations and businesses across Highland to do as much as they can to get useful information out to those who aren’t online – especially at this difficult time. Using local press,

newsletters and radio really helps. Also in emails and social media posts, please ask folk to share news with those not online: to “share to care”. Use the hashtag #HighlandShare2Care to spread the message.

We can all help: word of mouth from a trusted person is one of the most effective ways of passing on information. When you see something which may be of interest to someone you know who isn’t online, please pick up the phone and give them a call for a blether and mention it, or drop them a wee note. Thank you!

EMPIRE BISCUITS A HOME RECIPE FROM CHRISTINE MACKENNA

200g Caster sugar 500g Plain flour Jam Cherries (or jellies)

• METHOD • Preheat over to 180° Cream together butter and sugar Gradually stir in flour until blended smoothly On a lightly floured surface roll out the dough to around 5mm thickness Cut out circles using pastry/cookie cutter Bake for around 10 minutes on a wire rack Allow to cool then sandwich jam between two biscuits Mix icing sugar with a little milk (which makes it more spreadable) and spread on top of biscuit sandwich Top with half a cherry (or jelly sweet)

The Granite House –

serving our local community for 43 years...

In the 43 years since the Granite House opened in 1977, they have never been closed for more than a few days in a row let alone for weeks and weeks. And yet, as we write this, The Granite House has been closed for nearly nine weeks, a situation unimaginable only a few months ago.

In the initial weeks as the reality of the situation began to sink in, owners the Ness family realised that they are in a unique position to be able to offer their services to the community of Fort William even with their doors closed.

With everyone looking for ways to keep themselves and their families busy, it seemed like the perfect time to open a delivery service to provide games, model kits, jigsaws and crafts. With a great initial response and the demand for a wider range of products for people to send gifts to loved ones or to brighten their homes during this difficult time they have been adding more and more of the range to their website.

Wills

For many, preparing a Will can seem like a daunting prospect. How complicated will the process be? How much will it cost? What if my circumstances change? Do I need a Will?

In Scotland, if someone dies without leaving a Will, the administration and distribution of their Estate can be a time consuming and costly exercise. In addition, the absence of a Will creates uncertainty for your loved ones and, in a worst case scenario, can result in your Estate - which comprises everything you own at the date of your death - being left to those whom you may not wish to inherit from you.

It is for these reasons that a Will is arguably one of the most important documents you will prepare in your lifetime, and yet, the process of preparing a Will is in fact, in most cases, quite straightforward. Your Will can be tailored to meet your specific needs and can be altered at any time and as many times as may be necessary, to suit your circumstances. Your Will sets out who you wish to deal with the administration of your Estate and who is to inherit, for example, your property, jewellery and money in the bank. By having a Will in place, you not only give yourself peace of mind, but offer your loved ones protection too.

Powers of Attorney

A Power of Attorney, as distinct from a Will, is something many like to view as an insurance policy – it’s there in the hope that it is never needed, but gives you the reassurance that measures are in place should you ever lose the capacity to make decisions for yourself.

A Power of Attorney is a document in which the granter appoints a nominated person, or persons, to deal with their affairs, in the event that they are no longer able to do so. There are two components to a Power of Attorney - one section covers your finances and everyday affairs and the other covers your welfare. You may appoint the same person, or people, for both elements, but it’s also competent to appoint somebody different for each.

It’s a common misconception that relatives can make decisions on an adult family member’s behalf where they no longer have capacity (e.g. on admission to hospital), but this is not the case. Increasingly nowadays, if someone requires to act on behalf of an adult, they must provide proof that they have the authority to do so. A Power of Attorney cannot be granted once capacity is lost and so it’s important to ensure that you have one in place, even if you think it’s not immediately necessary. Once capacity is lost, a Guardian must be appointed through the Courts.

It is also important to remember that a Power of Attorney ceases on death and, therefore, an Attorney no longer has authority to deal with matters at that point.

THE ONGOING IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL DISTANCING Ian Blackford MP With the sun in the sky and spring in the air, it’s only natural that people are starting to wonder when the current “lockdown” situation is likely to end.

However, I urge you all to continue to act responsibly by following Government guidelines on social distancing so we can halt the spread of Covid-19. This is the greatest challenge facing us at this time and it is vital we ALL do the right things now so we can reduce the impact of coronavirus and save lives.

As we learn to deal with the dramatic changes imposed on us at this time, I must commend the wonderful NHS staff, care workers, shop workers, police officers and many other key workers who are unable to selfisolate as they continue to work tirelessly to assist others during this unprecedented emergency.

The response from our public service workers has been exceptional and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude for putting themselves at risk, while working around the clock to protect our loved ones. Equally, there has been an incredible response from community groups and individuals, who are doing whatever they can to support vulnerable residents,

while adhering to the social distancing rules. I applaud you all.

Countless businesses throughout this area have, of course, been forced to close and I know there is widespread concern about this among constituents – whether employed, self-employed or seasonal workers. Please be assured that I will continue to press for appropriate support to be delivered to everyone who needs it – and for this to be distributed more quickly.

While I welcome the UK government’s Job Retention Scheme in general terms, it has failed to provide protections for thousands of workers and businesses. That’s why I used the first ever virtual session of Prime Minister’s Questions to highlight the desperate need for financial support for millions of people throughout the UK.

MPs will continue to challenge the Government from their constituencies rather than travelling to London – something many have been advocating for a number of years – and along with more than 100 fellow MPs, from seven political parties, I have urged the Government to consider a “recovery universal basic income” in a bid to limit the fallout from the Covid-19 crisis.

This is the only way to stave off a deeper economic crisis after the coronavirus lockdown ends.

When Parliament went into Easter recess I returned home to Skye, where I self-isolated for a week in order to protect my wife Ann. Since then, we have been able to spend isolation together with me continuing to communicate with constituents and Government Ministers via the internet, interspersed with lambing, which has been going very well this season.

Bringing new life of any kind into this world – and I know that many of you will have newborn children in your families which you have not yet been able to hug and welcome – merely underlines the fact that we must all do whatever it takes to beat this virus.

COVID -19 HELP FOR BUSINESS Kate Forbes MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Finance The Covid-19 public health crisis has led extremely quickly to an economic crisis that is global in nature but also local, impacting on many people and businesses in Lochaber. eir workers for following the social distancing guidance, the essential sectors and supply chains for continuing to keep the country running and those companies that have repurposed to manufacture supplies for the health sector.

It is in everyone’s interest to help local businesses through this turbulent period. The UK Government has the immediate fiscal and macroeconomic powers to respond to the economic crisis and it has made substantial and welcome commitments to support businesses and employees.

However, those commitments do not fully meet the needs of Scottish businesses. There are still significant gaps in both the job retention scheme and the support for the self-employed.

The additional £100 million that the Scottish Government recently allocated will be a vital lifeline for Lochaber individuals and businesses to relieve hardship and protect the newly self-employed, who are ineligible for other support, and viable micro, small and medium-sized enterprises that

are in distress and might be ineligible for UK Government sources of funding or not yet in receipt of the funds that they need to survive.

The grant funding has been channelled through Highland Council and HIE. The scheme opened at the end of April and recipients should have received funds throughout May. The provisional allocation will see £34 million for the newly self-employed, £20 million for creative, tourism and hospitality companies that are not in receipt of business rates relief and £45 million for firms that are vulnerable but vital to Scotland’s local and national economic foundations.

LOCHABER HOPE ‘ZOOMS’ IN TO STAY IN TOUCH

Lochaber Hope is very much living up to its name in these difficult times, by putting in even more effort to reach people who may need an injection of ‘Hope’ into their lives.

Apart from carrying on with ‘business as usual’ with the addition of the best safe practices, the organisation has taken a big stride into forging online connections so that no one, whether shielding or following self-isolation should ever feel alone or unable to communicate with others.

A big part of this strategy has seen the setting up of various ‘Zoom’ groups. “Zoom’ is an easy to operate video conferencing app which allows a number of individuals to engage in conversation (using sound only or sound and video) and face-toface discussions almost as though they were in the same room.

by Lochaber Hope are operating per week at the moment, with more coming soon. Full details can be found on Lochaber Hope’s website and Facebook page.

Until now the groups have been openly advertised on Lochaber Hope’s social media so that anyone could join in. This worked very well with everyone really enjoying the interaction until some unknown internet ‘trolls’ took advantage of this openness to cause a few problems with

their immature stupidity.

However, undaunted and very aware of the need for security, Lochaber Hope are carrying on and instead asking people who want to take part to contact them first via telephone, email, or on Facebook in order to get the links and details of the groups.

Lochaber Hope has also created a new service which is a oneto-one anonymous ‘Webchat’.

The Webchat is very easy to use and works a bit like texting, but over the internet. It is manned by volunteers, with current operating times being Monday to Friday from 10-11am and then in the evenings between 5pm and 9pm.

Plans are already under way to extend these times during the day and over the weekend.

This service can be accessed by going to Lochaber Hope’s website during the hours listed above, and

visitors will be able to chat in real time to a volunteer.

Sofia Hernandez Pearce, one of the project workers at Lochaber Hope said: “We are doing all we can to ensure that Lochaber Hope and all of our services remain easily accessible at this time.

“We are continuing to operate ‘normally’ as far as possible, although physically meeting people has had to be restricted.”

At Lochaber Women’s Aid we are used to supporting women through times of crisis and helping children and young people deal with difficult situations, but the current pandemic has meant big changes to our ways of working. We are currently unable to meet face to face, but we are continuing to provide support via telephone, text, email and using social media.

during these changing and uncertain times we are seeking to recruit more women to our enthusiastic Board.

At present the Board gets together early evening once a month for a maximum of two hours, and for now, we’re having virtual meetings. Don’t worry if you’ve never been on a Board before as you will be provided with induction training as well as an existing Board member to guide and support you.

Experience in support services, fundraising, human resources or management would be an advantage but is not essential.

The

VAN MAN

The Van Man, Raymond Aitchison has lived in Fort William all of his life and is proud to be running his own business in his home town.

Raymond has been trading for three years, offering services throughout Lochaber but also across the rest of the UK and Europe. From small beginnings in 2017, the company now employees two other members of staff to keep things running smoothly for their customers.

The Van Man operates three designated vehicles. Two for all types of work from transporting single items. to full house and office moves or clearances.

The other vehicle is used specifically for removal of waste and landscaping materials and the company is fully insured and registered with SEPA to ensure work is carried out to the highest standards and in line with all health and safety guidelines. The company uses a private site, as opposed to the local government recycling centres and they ensure all waste is separated properly with as little as possible going to landfill.

In addition to removal and clearance, The Van Man has a variety of trailers to accommodate the

transportation of motorbikes and most small plant machinery and they can move anything which had its own trailer e.g. boats, cars, livestock or caravans to anywhere in Europe.

It doesn’t stop there!

Raymond and his team have a diverse range of skills – they also offer maintenance, grass cutting, hedge trimming, hard landscaping and fencing work, both domestic and commercial.

All work carried out is offered on either a contract or ad hoc basis for private and commercial customers.
