Brian Cox, an agriculture teacher at South High, was selected as the 2026-2027 Laramie County School District 1 Teacher of the Year. He was notified of the award at a surprise school assembly on Friday, April 24, and will be recognized by the LCSD1 Board of Trustees at their meeting on Monday, May 18.
Cox has been an educator at LCSD1 since 2023, teaching students at Johnson Junior High and South High.
According to his nomination form, which was submitted by a student, Cox sees growth and potential in every student.
“He isn’t just teaching agriculture, he is helping teach our future with the skills and confidence that we need,” the form said.
Cox holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary agriculture from Texas Tech University. While completing his degree, he was a member of the Texas Teach livestock judging team and served as a student assistant in the Department of Plant and Soil science.

Cox will move on to represent the district in the Wyoming Teacher of the Year competition. To be selected as the LCSD1 Teacher of the Year, teachers are nominated by students, staff or community members. Teachers fill out an application form which is reviewed by a selection committee made up of LCSD1 staff from diverse roles and departments in the district, as well as community members. This year, 57 nominees turned in applications. The selection committee scored the applications and chose an elementary, a junior high and a high school teacher to continue as finalists.

Laramie County DUI Victim Impact Panel
Laramie County DUI Victim Impact Panel will be held May 18. All panels are held at LCCC in the Center for Conferences, Room 130, 1400 East College Drive, start time is 6:30pm sharp (doors will lock at 6:30pm). Please arrive at 6:00pm-6:15pm for check in. Safe Kid’s Day
Join the 27th Annual Safe Kids Day on Saturday, May 23 from 10:00am-1:00pm at the Laramie County Public Library, 2200 Pioneer Avenue. The event includes over 20 exhibitors inside the library offering games, balloons, raffles, bike giveaways and other swag. There will be bike helmet giveaways with fittings and adjustments, car seat inspections and a Bike Rodeo in the parking lot. Kids should bring a bike if they have one! A family friendly Slow Roll is scheduled at noon. Participants should meet in the city’s north parking lot across from the library. The Slow Roll proceeds at a leisurely pace over the span of an hour and music and conversation fill the streets as you roll along the route.

Open House: 18th Street Reconstruction Project
The City of Cheyenne will host a public open house to review the 18th Street Reconstruction Project on Tuesday, May 26 from 5:00pm-7:00pm in the Cottonwood Room at the Laramie County Library, 2200 Pioneer Avenue. The event will consist of a short presentation at 5:30pm and informational display boards, along with opportunities to visit with the project team and ask questions. For those who cannot attend the open house, the meeting presentation and open house displays will be available on the project website at connect.cheyennecity. org/18thStreet. Written comments will be accepted at the public meeting open house and afterward through the project website until Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is offering two free Stop the Bleed classes to help community members gain lifesaving skills and make Laramie County safer. Participants will learn why hemorrhage control is critical and will be trained in three techniques to help prevent life-threatening blood loss. May 20, 6:00pm at Pine Bluffs Town Hall, 215 Main Street, will be the first class. The second class will be May 21, 5:30pm-6:30pm at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, 214 East 23rd Street, in meeting rooms C and D. Applications Open for Municipal Candidates
The application period for City of Cheyenne Municipal Election candidates is currently open and closes Friday, May 29. This election year, three City Council seats (one from each ward) will be filled. All municipal offices are for four-year terms and are nonpartisan. Applications must be submitted in person at the City Clerk’s office located in Room 101 of the Municipal Building, 2101 O’Neil Avenue, during normal business hours. Zonta Club: Seeking Entries for Art Contest
The Zonta Club of Cheyenne is asking young and not-so-young artists, regardless of experience, to participate in its eleventh annual art contest. The theme is Domestic Violence: Rise, Recover, Reclaim. Artists are asked to provide, either realistically or abstractly, their vision of life as a survivor of domestic violence who is now trying to rebuild and restart a new life without violence, threats and harassment. Art in any medium is welcome, except for performance art. Paintings, drawings, prints, textile, photography, poetry and sculpture are all welcome. Three $200 prizes will be awarded: one for an artist under age 18, one for an adult artist and a People’s Choice award. Entries must be submitted no later than June 1 and may be dropped off at Flying S Title, 433 East 19th Street. Please include your name, age category, phone number and email. Nominations Extended for Dubois Award
The nomination period for the Dubois Award given annually by the Cheyenne Historic Preservation Board has been extended until July 31, 2026. The Dubois Award is for exceptionally significant preservation efforts on residential properties. Properties must be (1) primarily used as a residence, (2) have a Cheyenne mailing address, and (3) be more than 50 years old. Guidelines for ranking integrity, restoration and other factors of historic preservation are considered by the board to select award recipients.
