What Do You Do with Three Weeks of Classes?

Between this past Monday to December 19th, we have three weeks of school. That’s 15 school days between Thanksgiving and Christmas Breaks. With having to relearn the stuff we couldn’t remember over break, trying to keep from leaning fully into that Christmas Break laziness in anticipation, and overall struggling to keep our focus, it leads me to question: what do you do with three weeks of classes between breaks?

Different teachers I have take varying approaches, some cram as much curriculum into our brains hoping we can keep the information over break, some continue class time as normal, some handout busy work to fill class time and boost grades before break, and others give out homework to do over break. However teachers want to spend their limited time, there is an underlying issue in trying to teach before a break, competition.

Teachers are competing for space in their students’ heads, especially when as soon as we come back, we have about two weeks until finals for our classes. Students are expected to take a two-week break and be immediately prepared for the finals for the end of the semester. “I think that I will really have to get things figured out and lock in these three weeks if I don’t want to stress for end of the semester” says Hunter Brekhus, 12. “It all feels kind of rushed. It’s like I’ll have to rush and relearn everything these three weeks and I will have to do it all over again after break.”

The back-to-back breaks also leave students thinking about how teachers might find difficulties in planning their lessons for three, then two weeks, especially when the shorter half is being spent preparing for final exams, of which carry a larger percentage of our grades. This schedule is both unfair to teachers and students alike and should be changed in years to come.
