For the first time in over a decade, the Triumph High School Spartans laced up their high tops to play a basketball game with another school on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. The tradition of playing friendly, exhibition games with other alternative schools in the area had disappeared, and new Principal Mike Maloney wanted to rekindle it to build on the strong culture at Triumph to give the students another facet of being a Spartan to belong to and be involved in. A group of boys played basketball during lunch and any opportunity they could get, so it made sense to reach out and try to set up a basketball game to relaunch this tradi-

tion. Maloney was able to get a game organized with The Cathedral Home, a youth treatment facility in Laramie, WY, on the brand new Storey Gym hardwood. A full squad of students signed up and participated in practices with a handful of enthusiastic coaches for several weeks before the big game. A full crowd of supporters, some with signs made at Triumph for the game watched as their Spartans in full black and silver basketball uniforms took to the court and competed ending a long hiatus from competition. What the game and the athletes lacked in precision and finesse was more than made up for with the spirit of fun and competition that shined through on all of the athletes’, coaches’, and fans’ faces. The game was a success and Maloney is in contact with the school to set up a girls volleyball game to continue the tradition and collaboration with the Cathedral Home.

The United Way of Laramie County is seeking volunteers for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free tax preparation for individuals and families with low to moderate incomes, seniors, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers. Volunteers receive IRS-certified training and can serve as Greeters or Tax Preparers. Training begins Saturday, December 7, with flexible shifts available Monday through Saturday, including evening hours.
