lenge that happens every February. This year a fall blood drive was added. The theme was “changing seasons and changing lives.”

Prior to the blood drive, NHS members advertised and recruited donors. They asked the culinary classes to provide cookies and burritos for the donors to eat before and after their scheduled appointment. During the blood drive, NHS members helped donors check in and assisted the blood drive staff.

Hunting Forecast fo r Laramie Region

Upland Game

Big Horn Sheep

Hunting should be excellent. Hunter success was 100% in hunt areas 18 and 21 and 90% in hunt Area 19. The average age ram harvested was 8 years old in hunt areas 19 and 21, and 7 years old in hunt area 18.

Moose

HUNTING HUNTING SEASON IS HERE!

Below-average precipitation across the region should result in average to below-average brood survival for upland game birds, particularly sharp-tailed grouse, pheasants and sage-grouse. Dusky grouse should be in better shape given decent precipitation events in the higher elevations as well as vegetation recovery within the Mullen Fire. Game and Fish will continue to stock pheasants for the Springer Special Hunt, as well as for the general season throughout November and a portion of December, on the Springer Wildlife Habitat Management Area and in areas enrolled in the Access Yes program. Release sites will be available to the public prior to Nov. 1, which is the opening date for the general pheasant season.

Hunters with moose licenses are expected to have excellent hunting opportunities in the Snowy Range herd. Harvest success across Type 1 and Type 4 licenses continues to be exceptional, and the herd maintains high bull ratios and good calf production. In the table of tentative antelope hunting season information for this coming year, some license types are denoted with an asterisk (*) as having di cult public access. For these license types, there is limited opportunity to har vest an antelope on accessible public land. If applying for a license type(s) with di cult public access, hunters should recognize that hunter densities may be high on accessible public land or that antelope densities may be low. In these cases, hunters should consider securing access to private land well in advance.

Pronghorn

Mule Deer

Hunting Forecast for Laramie Region

Herds in the western portion of the Laramie Region in hunt areas 50, 51 and 52 are still recovering from long-term drought conditions as well as the 2022-23 winter. However, in the central part of the region populations are doing well, and license issuance has increased in hunt areas 42, 44, 45, 46, 46 and 48. Grassland herds within the Laramie Plains and east of the Laramie Mountains, which include hunt areas 11, 34, 38 and 103 have declined over the past seven years, along with notable decreases in fawn production. Decent buck numbers remain in these herds, but older animals will be hard to find. Mild winter conditions reduced stress on pregnant does, however, lack of spring and summer precipitation did not bode well for fawn survival, especially east of the Laramie Range. Overall, pronghorn hunting opportunities within the Laramie Region will be similar to previous years.

Mild winter conditions most likely had a positive e ect on herds throughout the region, especially compared to the previous winter. Herds throughout the region are all below their population objectives which translates to less opportunity and harder hunting conditions. CWD continues to slowly increase across herd units. The Goshen Rim herd has the highest prevalence at 39% and herds that were at 9% five years ago are now around 15%.

Hunters taking to the field in Hunt Area 70 need to be aware that the area is under mandatory CWD sampling. Wildlife biologists, wildlife technicians and game wardens will be in full force throughout the seven-day season collecting CWD samples at check stations in the field to assist hunters with collection e orts.

Elk Populations remain above objectives with ample harvest opportunities throughout the region. The Type 8 license was new in 2024 in hunt areas 3, 6, 7 and 8. This reduced price cow/calf license is unlimited in number, however, hunting limitations in each hunt area vary so hunters are encouraged to read the regulations so they are familiar with the di erences. Bull hunting opportunities continue to be favorable throughout the region, even in general hunt areas. Given hunting pressure on public land, hunters should be prepared to pursue elk in areas that are a fair distance from well-traveled roads and trails. Look for additional access opportunities on properties enrolled in the Game and Fish Access Yes program, and be sure to secure a permission slip if needed.

Safet y Tips for Your Dream Hunt

Hunting season is around corner for some locations throughout Wyoming. No matter the species method of harvest, it’s wise know and follow a few safety tips to make sure that dream hunt doesn’t turn into a tragedy

• Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded.

• Always point your muzzle in a safe direction.

• Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.

t ghout

• Keep your finger o the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

arms

“Our most common huntingrelated accidents in Wyoming involve a vehicle either loading in or out of the vehicle or riding on the vehicle and accidentally bumping the trigger. The second most common involves obs Wyoming Game and Fish Department Hunter Education Coordinator Katie Simpson.

on t e vehicle ger. T igg seco stacle a crossing,” said ossi

It is not illegal to drive with a loaded firearm in Wyoming, but it isn’t always safe. Simpson said if hunters choose to drive with a loaded firearm, it’s advised they don’t have a round in the chamber

As for being sure of your target and what’s beyond it, Simpson used an example near Cheyenne several years ago to demonstrate its importance.

A hunter was pursuing pronghorn and took a shot at one atop a ridgeline. The bullet missed but traveled about a mile past its target and hit a car driving along Interstate 80. No one was hurt, but the bullet broke a window.

There are some times when big game archery and rifle hunters may be in the field at the same time. People hunting big or trophy game animals during an open regular season are legally required to wear fluorescent orange or pink in the field, regardless of the weapon they are hunting with. Archers are not required to wear those colors while hunting during a special archery season or archery-only season.

Other tips from Simpson include:

• Always tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return.

• Bring more equipment than you think you’ll need, including more layers of clothing, food and water

• Be aware of hypothermia and its symptoms. Simpson said exposure to hypothermia usually occurs to unprepared hunters when the ambient temperature is 40 to 60 degrees.

• If you get lost, stay put — whether on foot or vehicle. This is especially true if you’ve told someone where you’re at.

Five most common hunting violations

CHEYENNE - Every year as hunting seasons get underway, Game and Fish o ces receive numerous questions about various game laws and what hunters can and cannot do while in the field.

Some of the questions come from new residents who are not familiar with Wyoming law and how Wyoming laws may di er from their previous residence. Most Wyoming laws are a matter of common sense, but there are some laws and regulations that are violated more frequently than others. Following is a listing of five common violations that crop up every hunting season.

Failure to Tag - Every big and trophy game license has a carcass coupon attached. And each license has the tagging instructions printed on the coupon. When the animal is killed, simply detach the tag from the license and date the carcass coupon by cutting out the entire day and month of the kill. Sign the license and attach to the carcass before leaving the site of the kill. The coupon may be removed during transportation to prevent its loss, but it must be in possession of the person accompanying the carcass. You must detach, sign, and date the tag to comply with the tagging regulation. If any one of these is omitted, then a violation has occurred.

Shooting from a Vehicle - Simply put, it is illegal to shoot any wildlife except predatory animals from any motorized vehicle. This includes o -road vehicles and snowmobiles. To legally fire a weapon, a person must be out of the vehicle. Hunters holding a handicapped hunter permit are exempt from this requirement.

Shooting from a Road - It is illegal to shoot or attempt to kill any wildlife from any public road or highway. No person shall fire any firearm from, along, or across any public road or highway. A public road is defined as any road that is open to vehicular tra c to the public. The road surface, the area between fences on a fenced public road or highway, and the area 30 feet perpendicular to the road surface on unfenced public roads is considered the public road. Two-track trails on public land are not defined as public roads

Failure to Retain Evidence of Gender - Many Wyoming licenses require the taking of a specific sex of animal. There are also season dates in di erent hunt areas when only a specific sex of animal can be taken. To satisfy the proof of gender requirement the regulation states: “in areas where the taking of any big game animal is restricted to a specific sex of animal, either the visible external sex organs, head, or antlers shall accompany the animal as a whole or edible portion thereof.”

Trespass - Wyoming law states that no person shall enter private land to hunt, fish, or trap without written permission from the landowner or person in charge of the property The license must bear the signature of the landowner or agent of the landowner on whose property the hunting is taking place or legitimate proof that permission to hunt has been granted. It is the responsibility of hunters to know if the land is public or private. To assist in this, the Bureau of Land Management has maps showing public and private lands. Maps can be obtained from the BLM by calling 307- 7 75-6256. Many Wyoming sporting goods businesses also carry BLM maps for their local area. For hunters with GPS units a micro SD chip is available from the Game and Fish, 307-777-4600, that shows land status and hunter location. Wyoming laws and regulations can be found in every set of regulations for each species. Persons with questions on these or any other Game and Fish laws and regulations can call 307-777-4600 or any Game and Fish regional o ce

Kiwanis Park Rules

Visitors to Kiwanis Community Park are reminded not to feed neighboring horses or any other wildlife while on the park property and that dogs must be leashed. The City has received complaints about the issue and signs are posted at the park, which is located off East Pershing Boulevard. The horses near the park are on private property and feeding neighboring horses can disrupt their diets and cause serious health issues. In addition, dogs must be on a leash at all city-owned parks including Kiwanis Community Park. Dogs should never be allowed to harass or chase other animals or wildlife.
