About Antelope Hunting in Wyoming

Limited Quota

Location

All Wyoming antelope hunt areas are managed under a limited quota framework, meaning there are a set number of licenses valid for each speciﬁc hunt area. All hunt areas have full-price "any " antelope licenses (Type 0, 1, 2 or 9). Most hunt areas also provide reduced-price limited quota "doe/fawn" licenses (Type 6, 7 or 8), which can be obtained separately or in addition to a full-price license.

After the license draw has been held, hunters can purchase a second "any antelope" license in speciﬁc hunt areas, if still available. "Any antelope" licenses still available after the draw are typically found in areas that are predominately private land, so hunters are encouraged to line up access before buying the license. Hunters may purchase up to four doe/fawn antelope licenses, only two of which can be obtained through the draw

HUNTING HUNTING SEASON IS HERE!

Wyoming's most sought after antelope hunting is primarily found in south-central, central and southwest Wyoming. Most hunt areas in these parts of Wyoming have ample public access on lands managed by the BLM. Public land hunt areas are typically hard to draw. Antelope are also abundant in northeast and east-central Wyoming, although ﬁnding access can be di cult because the area is largely private land.

In the table of tentative antelope hunting season information for this coming year, some license types are denoted with an asterisk (*) as having di cult public access. For these license types, there is limited opportunity to har vest an antelope on accessible public land. If applying for a license type(s) with di cult public access, hunters should recognize that hunter densities may be high on accessible public land or that antelope densities may be low. In these cases, hunters should consider securing access to private land well in advance

Hunting Strategies

Blind or Stand Hunting

The best hunters employ di erent strategies for various types of game, terrain, and weather conditions. Experienced hunters are a great resource for tips. There are also numerous books and websites devoted to hunting styles and techniques.

Blind or stand hunting is a method of setting a structure at one location for an extended period where you think there is a good possibility of seeing game. This could be along a game trail, at a water or food source

Blind hunting is very common in goose hunting where hunters set up near a water source along with decoys to attract nearby prey. Be sure to allow a safe distance between hunters and never shoot toward other hunters.

Still Hunting

Still hunting is a method of slowly moving through an area in order to ﬁnd your prey before it ﬁnds you. Spend more time being still and watching. Stop frequently to “read” the habitat, taking your time to observe all you can. Use binoculars to spot and identify game. Keep the wind in your face so your scent does not spook the game ahead of you. As you advance, check behind you as there are times when game may cautiously circle downwind.

Hunting on Foot

Hunting on foot can be challenging for several reasons. First, as in all hunting, you should be physically ﬁt. Next, pay attention to the wind direction and how it carries your scent. The amount of noise you make as you move can scare any game that may be in the area. Walk at least a mile from roads and popular access points so that animals are less pressured by other hunters. Always carry a good pair of binoculars to ﬁnd that hidden creature.

Stalking

Stalking is following a trail left by an animal or getting closer to your prey. Stalking takes concentration. Plan a route toward the animal that takes into consideration the ed spot,

CHEYENNE - Every year as hunting seasons get underway, Game and Fish o ces receive numerous questions about various game laws and what hunters can and cannot do while in the ﬁeld.

Some of the questions come from new residents who are not familiar with Wyoming law and how Wyoming laws may di er from their previous residence. Most Wyoming laws are a matter of common sense, but there are some laws and regulations that are violated more frequently than others. Following is a listing of ﬁve common violations that crop up every hunting season.

Failure to Tag - Every big and trophy game license has a carcass coupon attached. And each license has the tagging instructions printed on the coupon. When the animal is killed, simply detach the tag from the license and date the carcass coupon by cutting out the entire day and month of the kill. Sign the license and attach to the carcass before leaving the site of the kill. The coupon may be removed during transportation to prevent its loss, but it must be in possession of the person accompanying the carcass. You must detach, sign, and date the tag to comply with the tagging regulation. If any one of these is omitted, then a violation has occurred.

Shooting from a Vehicle - Simply put, it is illegal to shoot any wildlife except predatory animals from any motorized vehicle. This includes o -road vehicles and snowmobiles. To legally ﬁre a weapon, a person must be out of the vehicle. Hunters holding a handicapped hunter permit are exempt from this requirement.

Shooting from a Road - It is illegal to shoot or attempt to kill any wildlife from any public road or highway. No person shall fire any firearm from, along, or across any public road or highway. A public road is defined as any road that is open to vehicular tra c to the public. The road surface, the area between fences on a fenced public road or highway, and the area 30 feet perpendicular to the road surface on unfenced public roads is considered the public road. Two-track trails on public land are not defined as public roads

Failure to Retain Evidence of Gender - Many Wyoming licenses require the taking of a specific sex of animal. There are also season dates in di erent hunt areas when only a specific sex of animal can be taken. To satisfy the proof of gender requirement the regulation states: “in areas where the taking of any big game animal is restricted to a specific sex of animal, either the visible external sex organs, head, or antlers shall accompany the animal as a whole or edible portion thereof.”

Trespass - Wyoming law states that no person shall enter private land to hunt, ﬁsh, or trap without written permission from the landowner or person in charge of the property The license must bear the signature of the landowner or agent of the landowner on whose property the hunting is taking place or legitimate proof that permission to hunt has been granted. It is the responsibility of hunters to know if the land is public or private. To assist in this, the Bureau of Land Management has maps showing public and private lands. Maps can be obtained from the BLM by calling 307- 7 75-6256. Many Wyoming sporting goods businesses also carry BLM maps for their local area. 2 lbs antelope roast sliced thin

2 cups rice (cook as directed on package)

2 tbsp hoisin sauce

1 tbsp soy sauce

3 garlic cloves minced

1 tbsp fresh ginger minced

1/2 cup chicken broth

1 cup sweet mini bell peppers chopped

1 small white onion diced

8 oz sliced water chestnuts drained

6 green onions chopped

1 tbsp olive oil

1. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat.

2. Add the antelope and cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until lightly browned.

3. Add garlic, sweet peppers and white onion and cook an additional 5 minutes, stirring frequently

5. In a small bowl, combine chicken broth, hoisin suace, soy sauce and ginger.

6. Add to antelope mixture and bring to a boil over meium-high heat.

8 oz. fresh mozzarella ﬂat leaf parsley, ﬁnely chopped for garnish

2. In a bowl combine the ground elk, freshly chopped parsley, granulated garlic powder and kosher salt. Shape into 4 individual patties about 3/4” thick.

3. Add the eggs and water to a bowl and lightly beat until blended. In another bowl combine the seasoned breadcrumbs and grated parmesan cheese. Dip each elk patty into the egg wash and then press into breadcrumbs coating both sides. Set aside when done

Registration Open for 3-6 Youth Basketball League

Registration is now open for the City of Cheyenne 3-6 Youth Basketball League, a recreational league for kids in grades 3 through 6. Late registration runs through September 11 during which a $25 late fee will be added if space is available. All registration will be closed after September 11 The cost of the league is $65/player. Practices start October 27 and games begin November 8. Registrations include six games, a shirt, a basketball, a team picture and an award. Games will be played on Saturdays and possibly some Friday evenings. On-Street Oversized Vehicle Restriction

Beginning September 6, oversized vehicles may not be parked on the street with some exceptions. The restriction ends May 20, 2026. Oversized vehicles are defined as any vehicle or trailer or combination that exceeds 25’ in length, 9’ in height or 8.5’ in width. Mirrors, lights and other safety features on a vehicle do not contribute to this limit. Permits will be available from the City Clerk’s Office to temporarily allow oversized vehicles to park on the street when the seasonal restriction is in place.
