Mental Health and Suicide Rates Among Teenagers

Mental health among teenagers has been an urgent public health concern in Wyoming and the United States as a whole. While awareness has grown in recent months, data from struggling teens is still often overlooked. It is an issue that teens like us at East grapple with from time to time.

rates have increased rapidly among teen populations than other adults in the past decade (kff.org). At the same time, minority groups such as teen boys, rural youth populations and some racial and ethnic groups have higher mental health rates and are at higher risk for suicide

Across the United States, suicide remains the leading cause in young people (ages 10-19). Nationally, 50,000 people died to suicide in 2022, with many more attempting or voicing thoughts of suicide (osc.ny.gov). Although teen suicide rates have declined slightly from 2021, the numbers are still extremely high (jedfoundation.org). Even small improvements cannot erase the seriousness of mental health issues in teenagers.

In Wyoming, the numbers are even worse. A young person is lost to suicide every 16.5 days on average, making the teen suicide rates in Wyoming almost three times higher than the national average (usafacts.org). Wyoming has experienced one of the largest increases in suicide rates over the past decade and has one of the highest rates in the whole country. For teens specifically, data shows a rise in middle school students who attempted suicide within the past year, showing how early the onset of mental health struggles can be. (wyomingpreventiondepot. org) Several factors in Wyoming can contribute to the rates being so high, including rural isolation. Many teens live far away from mental health services, making it harder to get help. Also, economic stress, family issues, and school-related pressure can make it harder for Wyoming teens to ask for help. In fact, 1 in 5 Wyoming residents report not being able to access mental healthcare because of locations (calc.net) Nationally, similar factors are affecting teens in different ways. Social media pressure, academic stress, and effects of the 2020 COVID 19 pandemic have all been recently linked to the rising anxiety and depression of teens. Data also shows how suicide

Despite these challenges, mental health awareness is expanding, with schools and communities, and governments offering more support programs and awareness campaigns. For example, Wyoming officials have pushed outreach training on how to recognize mental health signs and respond early. (wyofile.org).

The issue of mental health and suicide teens is complex and serious. It requires continued attention, open conversations, and better access to support. While progress is being made, Wyoming and the nation still have a long way to go in protecting the well-being of young people.

If you know someone who is struggling, reach out to them or a trusted adult. Never be afraid to reach out and talk to someone. Improving the rates of mental health among teens can start with one conversation. And remember, you are never expected to deal with your struggles alone.
