The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the U.S. According to ACT.org, its purpose is “to measure how well you understand what you’ve learned in high school.” It assesses students in STEM subjects, evaluating their performance in each area before calculating an overall score based on their results.
How well does the ACT actually measure a student’s understanding of high school subjects? Surprisingly, while the test has some benefits, it doesn’t assess what it claims to. Studies show that the ACT measures test-taking skills more than actual subject knowledge. While test-taking strategies are useful in both high school and college, they may not be the best way to evaluate academic ability.
According to FairTest.org, “even the test-makers acknowledge that high school grades predict first-year college success better than ACT scores.” This raises an important question: if grades are a more accurate reflection of college readiness, should the ACT still be required? Are we adding unnecessary stress to students?
Public opinion suggests a shift away from standardized testing. According to The Harris Poll, “60% [of Americans] believe colleges should stop requiring ACT scores for admission. With most people in favor of relying on high school grades instead, it may be time to reconsider the necessity of the ACT.
