Graduation: Cords for Clubs?

High school graduation is meant to celebrate four years of hard work, growth, and achievement, yet the cords students wear at East High School often recognize only one type of success: academic performance. While earning high grades and academic honors is certainly worthy of recognition, it should not be the only accomplishment visibly celebrated at graduation. High schoolers should be allowed to wear cords for sports, clubs, and other extracurricular activities because these commitments require dedication, build critical life skills, and reflect meaningful contributions to the school community.

Achievement does not exist solely within classroom walls. Student-athletes spend countless hours training, attending practices, competing, and maintaining eligibility, often while balancing demanding coursework. Members of a club like theatre rehearse late into the evening. Speech and Debate teams, robotics clubs, student council, and volunteer clubs invest significant amounts of time, energy, and dedication into their organizations. These students must demonstrate discipline, perseverance, leadership, teamwork, and time management, which someone could argue is just as, if not more important than earning a high GPA. When schools limit cords primarily to academic distinctions, they unintentionally suggest that intellectual achievement outweighs all other forms of excellence, even though extracurricular involvement offers equal commitment and sacrifice.
Furthermore, expanding cord eligibility can encourage greater student involvement and strengthen school culture. When students know that their hard
work in athletics, arts, or service will be acknowledged, they may feel more motivated to participate and take on leadership roles. A thriving school community depends on diverse contributions, from athletes and performers to volunteers and innovators. Graduation should reflect that diversity rather than highlight only a single measure of success. Not every student may excel in a traditional academic setting, but many shine in their environments where they discover confidence and purpose. Allowing cords for sports, clubs, and extracurricular activities promotes a more inclusive definition of achievement and validates different strengths. It sends a powerful message that excellence comes in many forms, and that all meaningful dedication deserves recognition. Ultimately, graduation is about telling a story of who students have become over the last four years. Limiting cords to academics only tells a quarter of that person’s story. By allowing cords extracurricular accomplishments, schools can create ceremony that truly honors the full range of student growth, commitment, and impact.
