The Screen Time Dilemma— Navigating a Digital Childhood

It’s no secret that screens have become an inseparable part of modern life. From school to socializing, from entertainment to education, teenagers are growing up immersed in digital landscapes that didn’t exist just two decades ago. But with this transformation comes a growing concern: what is all this screen time doing to our teens?
According to Common Sense Media, U.S. teens now spend an average of nearly 8.5 hours a day on screens for entertainment alone. That doesn’t include schoolwork or other necessities. While technology opens doors to knowledge, creativity, and connection, we must ask—at what cost?
First, let’s talk mental health. Numerous studies have drawn correlations between excessive screen time and increases in anxiety, depression, and sleep disruption in adolescents. The constant stream of notifications, curated social media personas, and pressure to be “always on” can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and loneliness. In essence, the more connected teens are online, the more disconnected they can feel in real life.
Sleep is another casualty. Blue light emitted from screens delays the release of melatonin, making it harder for teens—who already face shifting biological sleep patterns—to get the rest they need. Sleep deprivation isn’t just a nuisance; it’s a direct threat to academic performance, emotional regulation, and even physical health.
Then there’s the erosion of attention spans. The fast-paced, dopamine-rich environment of apps like TikTok and Instagram trains the brain to crave constant stimulation. This makes it harder for teens to focus on less immediately gratifying tasks like reading, homework, or simply sitting in quiet reflection.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom.
Not all screen time is created equal. When used mindfully, screens can be powerful tools for learning, self-expression, and social engagement. Teens can connect with like-minded peers, explore diverse perspectives, and build digital literacy—an essential skill in the modern world.
The real challenge lies in balance. Parents, educators, and policymakers must work together to promote healthier screen habits. This includes setting clear boundaries around screen time, encouraging screen-free zones (like bedrooms and the dinner table), and teaching teens how to critically evaluate the media they consume.
Technology is not the enemy. But without thoughtful guidance, the tools that were designed to connect us can end up isolating us—and our teens—in unintended ways. The goal isn’t to ban screens, but to build a culture where they enhance life, rather than replace it.
It’s time we stop treating screen time as a personal failure and start addressing it as a public health conversation. Our teens are growing up in a digital world. Let’s make sure they’re growing up healthy, too.

2025 Greater Cheyenne Greenway Spring Cleanup
Warmer weather is approaching, and the annual Greenway Spring Cleanup is scheduled for May 3-18. More than 70 groups, such as businesses, churches, schools, non-profits and clubs, provide regular cleanup along segments of the Greenway in both the city and county. Greenway staff ask that if anything has changed with a participating group’s contact information, Greenway segment preference or if the group is unable to continue with the program, contact Jeanie Shrednik, Greenway and Parks Planner, at 307-638-4379 or email jshrednik@cheyennecity.org. Participants should wear boots or sturdy shoes, long pants and gloves for clean-up efforts. Greenway staff can provide trash bags and light weight gloves upon request.
