Mother’s Day was first recognized in 1907. Ana Jarvis, who was from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. LCSD1 hosts County Math Contest

aramie County School District1 recently gave students the opportunity to showcase their math skills. In previous years, the district has hosted the Wolsborn-Drazovich State Math Contest, however, due to the ongoing pandemic, the statewide contest was canceled. According to LCSD1 Math Coordinator Amy Kassel, the district decided to host a math contest for students in Laramie County. “We decided as a district that it was important for our students to have this opportunity and we wanted to provide that for them,” Kassel said. Kassel said 196 students participated this year. She said there were students from Central High, East High, South High, Carey Junior High, Johnson Junior High, McCormick Junior High, Poder Academy and Cheyenne Virtual School. Because of health guidelines related to COVID-19, schools had to limit the number of students who could participate. East High math teacher Rick Simineo said he recruited students by making an announcement and mentioning the contest during class. McCormick Junior High math teacher Amanda Morgan said they recruited students by handing out flyers with information during their class. Simineo said they didn’t hold scheduled practices but if students wanted to study, he provided them with tests from previous years. “We offered practices before and after school Monday through Thursday for three weeks prior to the contest,” Morgan said. “The students could attend any practice sessions they wanted. Students were required to attend at least two practices and had to be passing all of their classes to attend the math contest.” Kassel said the LCSD1 Transportation Department sanitized the buses before picking students up from their schools. She said they also required students to wear face masks and the tables at Storey Gym were distanced six feet apart. Bathroom breaks were staggered, so students weren’t all gathered in one place. This year, Kassel said Simineo wrote the questions.

“I started by writing questions for each of the grade-level standards for each test,” Simineo said. “I spread those around, then went back and added problems that would balance the others. If a problem set had a lot of calculator-based problems, for example, I would write a problem that students could reason through without any calculations.” In previous years, students completed five tests, however, this year, Kassel said students were only given four tests. They had 20 minutes to complete each test. “The test is written in three different groups,” Kassel said. “There is the seventh- and eighthgrade test, ninth- and 10th-grade test and the 11th- and 12th-grade test.” Kassel said each question was worth 20 points and the only way to get a zero was to leave it blank. She said if students answered a question wrong, they were deducted five points. “In most math classes, we focus on one concept or technique for a few weeks, test over it then move on,” Simineo said. “The Math Contest pushes students to remember all their math in one morning, so the students really have to stretch.” While their tests were graded, Kassel said students were given popsicle sticks and asked to build a Da Vinci Bridge, which is a bridge Leonardo da Vinci designed that is held up by its own weight. They tested the sturdiness of their bridge by placing their calculators on it. The top 10 students in each test group received prizes and the top three scorers were given medals. “The best part of the contest is the conversation that students have afterward, when they talk to each other about how they solved the problems and what connections they were able to see,” Simineo said. “It’s great to see students share their knowledge and learn from each other.” At this year’s contest, Central High, McCormick Junior High and Carey Junior High received trophies for having three top scorers for their division. “This contest gives our math students a challenge,” Morgan said. “They are excited to strive in something they enjoy and shine academically.”

South Pass City Historic Site and The Friends of South Pass are happy to announce the return of their signature events at South Pass City. Laramie County Library System is now offering the Libby app by Overdrive for ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, videos and comics.
