whirlwind of productivity—and a hint of late fall frenzy—sums up the close of our Winter 2026 issue. As we prepared to shift to an enhanced four-issue annual schedule, a flurry of behind-the-scenes updates took place, sometimes in tandem with roasting Thanksgiving turkeys or hanging stockings by the fire.

We’re especially delighted about the expanded page count, which gives us room for richer storytelling and a broader editorial scope. Once the pace of change settled, we focused on assembling an issue that reflects our vision: deeper profiles and photo spreads, new departments—including a Writer’s Corner—and features that support our goal of creating a more immersive, upscale, and collectible magazine.

In Oregon, a newly built barn reveals the seamless collaboration between avid horse owners and an inventive design team, resulting in a cathedral-style structure that feels both dramatic and deeply personal—one of many inspiring projects in this sumptuous portfolio.

Our creative thread continues with a visit with Willow Kemp, Firmdale Hotels’ Art Ambassador & Design Director for the London-based Kit Kemp Design Studio. Animated and knowledgeable, she was just as eager to talk about her life with horses as she was about art and architecture.

In the travel sphere, editor-at-large Rebecca Baldridge—typically found sipping champagne in Royal Ascot’s Royal Enclosure in a festooned headpiece or wielding a polo mallet in Argentina or Saint-Tropez—trades her hats and helmets for a Stetson and fringed chaps on a dusty cattle drive in New Mexico.

Colorful? Absolutely. Madcap? She never disappoints. Meanwhile, in Traverse City, Michigan, EQ’s Sarah Lessler embarks on a multigenerational getaway, blending travelogue and lively anecdotes as she takes in the CSI5* grand prix at the Traverse City Horse Shows.

Responding to readers’ requests, we’ve expanded our department pages, filling them with fresh ideas for décor, design, style, people, and more. In this edition,

SCALLOP CEVICHE WITH COCONUT AND LIME In this recipe, we used scallops from Hokkaido, Japan. They are prized for their firm texture and rich, sweet flavor; however, any fresh scallops will do. Alternatively, you can substitute a white fish such as amberjack.

INGREDIENTS For the marinade (makes 6-10 portions) 22g fresh ginger 6g garlic 18g fish sauce 65g fresh lime juice 100g sweetened cream of coconut For one appetizer portion of scallops 90g scallops 10g olive oil Kosher salt to taste 37g Persian cucumber 17g baby heirloom tomato Torn cilantro for garnish METHOD Prepare the marinade 1. Peel the garlic and ginger and place in a blender with fish sauce, lime juice, and cream of coconut.

Blend on high for 1 minute, then strain through a fine-mesh strainer.

Keep cold until needed.

Prepare the scallops 1. Remove the abductor muscle from the scallop (that is the small

rectangular, slightly tougher flap attached to the side of the scallop).

2. Season the scallops lightly with kosher salt and pat dry with a paper towel.

3. Heat a nonstick or cast-iron pan on high heat. When hot, lightly dress the scallops with olive oil, and then sear their sides in the pan.

Move quickly to char or brown the scallops on the outside without cooking the insides. Remove the scallops from the pan and place them on a paper towel, then chill them immediately.

4. Once cold, slice the scallops into medallions about an eighth of an inch thick. Dress the scallops with the marinade and chill for 2 to 3 minutes 5. Thinly slice the cucumber and cherry tomato and set aside.

ASSEMBLY Arrange marinated scallops on a plate with one slice of cucumber on each scallop, followed by one slice of cherry tomato on each cucumber.

Tear the cilantro leaves and place one small leaf on top of each tomato.

Finish by drizzling some of the remaining marinade liquid onto the plate.

You can add a light amount of olive oil and fleur de sel to taste.

Executive Chef ROBERT REISSNER, who leads the kitchen at Triple Crown, was born and raised in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where he discovered his passion for cooking at the age of 14.

That early enthusiasm led him to formal training at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. After graduating, he secured a coveted position at The Four Seasons in Baltimore, working under the acclaimed chef Michael Mina.

His culinary journey then took him to the West Coast, where he collaborated with renowned chefs: Thomas Keller, Michael Mina, and Neal Fraser, before ultimately joining the team at Catch Restaurant Group in Los Angeles.

Chef Reissner describes the menu at Triple Crown as “a masterclass in elegance and balance, featuring a distinguished selection of prime cuts and seafood, elevated by refined accompaniments.” He adds, “Each dish is a tribute to American classics, thoughtfully reimagined with depth and modern sensibility.”

TRIPLE CROWN RESTAURANT at the Radnor Hotel, in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, draws inspiration from the equestrian lifestyle and classic American style. The menu is anchored by classic American fare, with premium seafood and hand-selected, expertly aged steaks prepared to perfection. Guests can also enjoy a selection of impeccably crafted dishes, including house-made pasta, seasonal seafood, classic raw bar offerings, vibrant salads, and signature cocktails.

From mahogany-paneled walls and walnut flooring to emerald velvet pillows and tartan plaids, Triple Crown tells a story of quiet luxury and timeless tradition. Equestrian motifs—vintage riding boots, polo mallets, jockey silks, and silver trophies—are integrated throughout the space, evoking the noble spirit of the sport.

RIDING THE NEW COURSE After tragedy struck, KELSIE HANCOCK took the reins on her new life.

L

ife is never guaranteed.

The choices we make can’t secure the future we imagine, but the foundation of integrity and hard work we lay shapes how we respond when life shifts unexpectedly.

Success is not the absence of struggle, but the pursuit of meaning. For Kelsie Hancock, that meant turning personal tragedy into a commitment to service, memory, and gratitude.

Hancock began riding in high school.

“We didn’t have the budget for lessons, so when I started driving, I volunteered at a local private barn and got to ride the owner’s horse,” she says. She later attended Norwich University in Vermont, where she founded an equestrian club and took dressage and jumping lessons between classes.

During her senior year, she studied abroad in southern France and trained at L’Étrier du Dauphiné, a show jumping school.

After graduating, she worked at the university barn and commissioned as a Marine Corps officer. “Being a woman in the Marine Corps has been incredibly empowering,” she says. “It challenged me in so many ways and shaped me as a person.”

Hancock left active duty in 2019 and moved into corporate work as a business systems analyst for a biopharmaceutical company. She later returned to the Marine Corps as a reservist, worked as a defense contractor in Hawaii, then began pursuing a degree in aviation flight technology.

Her mantra, she says, is simple: “Closed mouths don’t get fed. If you see an opportunity, go for it.”

After moving to California, she took lessons at Ivey Ranch Park and later trained in dressage under Triana Pangrcic. During that time she reconnected with a college friend, Marine Corps Capt. Nicholas Losapio, an MV-22 Osprey pilot with VMM-364, the Purple Foxes. She was assigned to CLR17 Communications Company, and the two began dating in 2018. They became engaged in January 2021.

On June 8, 2022, Losapio was on a routine training flight when his aircraft suffered a total mechanical failure. He and four other Marines were killed. “He was a highly respected and accomplished pilot,” Hancock says, noting his three combat deployments, more than 1,300 flight hours, and his qualification as a Weapons and Tactics Instructor, the Marine Corps’ top certification.

In her grief, Hancock founded the

Purple Skies Foundation in May 2023.

“Our mission is to support significant others of service members killed in action or in the line of duty,” she says.

The foundation provides community, emotional support, education about the post-casualty process, financial resources, and connections to other nonprofits. She created it, she says, to fill the gap in support for unmarried partners.

Hancock now lives in Princeton, New Jersey, where she trains at SLM Dressage with Stephanie Mason, showing at Level 1 on a Swedish Warmblood gelding named Star. She hopes one day to own her own farm and horse.

She is also pursuing her pilot’s license, training full-time with Infinity Flight Group and Mercer County Community College using her G.I. Bill benefits. She expects to finish the program with commercial and multi-engine ratings.

Hancock’s career has expanded to include photography, social media marketing, and an online following of more than 40,000. “I try to live with purpose and passion,” she says. “Life is short.

SNOW WITHOUT COLOR A retired polo champion who LOSES HIS COLOR VISION after a fall learns to sense the world again through rhythm and quiet endurance.

T

he sound came before the pain. A thick beat, somewhere between storm crash and distant claps. Miles Bennington was in motion, mid-swing, when his horse slipped on frozen grass. The mallet twisted from his grip, flying off like the game had stopped caring. He opened his eyes. Just white.

Not the kind of white from snowfields or walls. This was flat. Empty. Like paper left out too long. Later, the doctor said something about retinal trauma, cone loss, “progressive desaturation.”

Words that meant nothing to him except that color had quit.

The trophy room in his Vermont estate stayed lit through the night. He didn’t turn the lights off anymore. What was the point? Shelves lined with silver cups, all carved with his name. Some were real wins, others from tournaments that never existed. His old manager, Dalton Briggs, had ordered duplicates, saying it helped sponsors “see consistency.” Miles hadn’t argued.

He looked at them slow, one after another, trying to tell which were lies.

Snow fell heavy over the fields. A woman’s voice cut across the wind, sharp, familiar.

“Your step’s wrong again, Miles.”

He stopped near the training fence.

The woman was Vera, his assistant through fifteen seasons, and probably the last person who still cared about the horses when the owners didn’t. She held the lead of a tall grey mare, the type that used to make his heart jump.

“Everything looks flat now.”

She turned, confused. “Shade?”

“The horse. Is it the dapple or the solid?”

“It’s the same mare you rode in Palm Springs,” she said quietly. “You named her Limon.”

He tried to remember that color, the yellow so strong it almost hurt to look at.

Gone now.

At night he walked the stable path blindfolded, ears tuned to hooves rustling

in straw. The rhythm helped him count distance. He could tell which horse by sound alone, the way one pawed slow, another snorted after drinking.

Sometimes he caught himself humming to match the steps.

He had a small studio built beside the indoor ring years ago, full of framed photos from his prime. Now those photos meant nothing. Each image was a field of balanced shadows, the crowd behind him a blur of fog.

Dalton still called sometimes, always from a number that began with New York. “We’ve got another sponsor interested,” he said last week. “Retro pieces.

They want your story.”

“I don’t ride anymore.”

“Sure you do,” Dalton laughed.

“You’re the legend. You walk in, shake hands, pose with the horse. People love it. They don’t need to know what you see.”

Miles hung up.

Snow came early again. It didn’t melt even when the sky cleared. The estate looked like a blank photograph, the kind printed without ink. He took long walks around the property, mapping fences with his cane. The staff had been reduced to two: Vera and a groundskeeper named Silas who preferred fixing engines to speaking.

One afternoon Vera met him by the barn with two envelopes. “Invoices,” she said. “And one more from the club.”

He tore them open slowly. The paper felt heavier than usual.

She shook her head. “He’s not.”

He folded the letters. His hands trembled. “I’ll call him.”

“You won’t get him,” she said.

“He left the circuit. Heard he’s in Scottsdale now.”

The snow under her boots made a dull sound, not crisp. He listened instead of answering.

That night he sat in the tack room. Heater droned. Air heavy with saddle oil and worn leather. He set each trophy down, arranging them by height. The silver looked dull, no reflection anymore. Maybe it never had any.

He reached the largest one, engraved with the date of his final championship.

He traced the rim, noticed a bump, like a nick. Rubbed harder. A small sticker lifted. Underneath, the real engraving was someone else’s name.

The next morning he asked Vera to read the names from the rest. Two were correct. Five were not.

He didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to.

Weeks passed. He avoided mirrors, though sometimes the window caught his face and startled him. His skin looked pale, his hair thinner. He didn’t care much. The only thing that bothered him was the silence in the stables. Horses gone, most sold to pay “maintenance.”

Vera said the same word every time, like it meant air, water, anything but debt.

He started training again, though there was no audience. Each morning before sunrise he entered the ring with Limon.

He stopped answering calls.

Reporters tried reaching out after the news spread, but Vera handled them.

“He’s retired,” she said every time.

Sometimes at night she found him sitting on the cold bleachers inside the ring, listening. He’d tell her he could hear patterns most people missed. “Each horse makes its own time,” he said.

“When you stop trying to see, you hear it. Like snow falling on metal roofs.”

She didn’t correct him.

By April, the estate started to thaw.

Mud replaced snow, and light began to return in soft layers. He couldn’t watch the change, but warmth touched his face now, and that meant something.

One morning, steps echoed in the stable too early for anyone to be up.

He followed the noise down the aisle, stopped at Limon’s stall. The mare stood calm, breath fogging the cold air. A figure moved beside her... a kid, looked twenty, gripping a camera.

“Who’s there?” Miles asked.

“Photography student,” the boy said nervously. “I’m doing a series on legendary riders.”

“Legendary, huh?”

As spring 1934 turned to thoughts of summer, Greyhound prepared to make his racing debut. Palin increased his training miles, going a couple jog miles followed by three or four training miles with times in the three-to threeand-a-half-minute range, brushing the last quarter or eighth of the final mile in a faster clip. These training miles would have a roughly twenty-five or forty-minute break between them where his groom would take Greyhound back to the stable, rub him down with liniment to keep his muscles loose, and cover him in blankets until his next training mile. Horses stood covered and blowing hard while they waited for more training or, if racing, their next heat. The idea back then was to not allow the horse to cool off between heats, as it was believed they would be better prepared for the next if they were still quite warm. After the final heat or training mile, the horse would get bathed in warm water with Tuttle’s Elixir, rubbed down, then walked and cooled out slowly, intermittently given a few sips of water, and not returned to their stall until their thirst was slaked and their breathing had returned to normal.

Sep Palin reined Greyhound around the final turn at the Indianapolis training track. The big gelding moved easily between the shafts of the jog cart, his long legs covering ground with smooth efficiency.

his hands forward, giving Greyhound a bit more line. The big gelding took it readily and surged forward, Palin’s body lurching back slightly as Greyhound changed gears and increased his speed. His stride was like nothing Palin had seen—the roll of his forelegs; the impossibly long reach; the piston-like action of his hindlegs’ powerful strokes like the coupling rod on the drive wheels of a steam locomotive.

Greyhound blazed the final quarter mile in thirty-one seconds. Palin gently took back the reins, slowed the gelding to a walk, then turned and jogged him back to the gap where his groom waited.

“Pretty fast last quarter.” John Hogan spoke as much to himself as anyone, unhooking Greyhound’s overcheck rein. The gray stretched his neck forward and down, glad to be free of the restrictive leather strap.

Palin, a man of few words, gave a barely perceptible nod and handed the lines to Hogan. Another groom held a young bay colt nearby, ready for the tall reinsman to take his next training mile. Hogan sat sideways on Greyhound’s jog cart, his legs hanging off to one side, draped over the arch, and drove Greyhound back toward the stable area to cool him out. Hogan was Greyhound’s first groom. The gelding would have three in total during his racing career, but for 1934, the old man and the young horse were a pair.

All around were signs of spring. Delicate buds poked out from the winding branches of the sugar maple trees near the Palin barn at the Indiana state fairgrounds. A robin landed on a branch above Greyhound’s head, chirping a merry tune, as the elderly groom worked loose the buckles on the harness and removed the leather straps from the gelding’s steel-gray body.

Soon the stable would leave their winter quarters at Indianapolis and travel to Columbus, Ohio.

Few took notice of the lanky gray gelding when he stepped onto the track at Columbus, Ohio, for his first training sessions on the road. He wasn’t much to look at. “Awkward” and “ugly” were among the most common adjectives used to describe young Greyhound. While he trained well, Greyhound showed nothing sensational in those first weeks in Ohio and failed to raise an eyebrow among the many writers who reported daily on the trotting scene.

In contrast, Lawrence Hanover, the LaSalleStable’s $6,800 purchase of the previous fall, was looking just as a trotting horse should. He was by far the top colt in trainer-driver Doctor Hugh Parshall’s stable, already turning in miles much faster than any other two-year-old.

“Doc” Parshall, at age thirty-five, was considered youthful among the veteran reinsmen. He’d been training harness horses for just fourteen years; many of the other top drivers had more than twice that time in the sulky. But the veterinarian from Ohio had been the top winning driver for the past five years.

Flashy, young, and exciting, Parshall was a popular figure in harness horse news columns and publications, and idolized by many fans and younger horsemen on the circuit.

While Parshall saw much success and would retire a legend in the world of harness racing, his aggressive style resulted in both remarkable wins and spectacular failures. Parshall often got the results owners were looking for, but he, like many horsemen of his era, saw the horse as an animal whose sole purpose was to work and to obey. Where Palin took his time developing Greyhound, Parshall

pushed Lawrence Hanover for brilliance early on.

Lawrence Hanover was a beautifully bred individual, oozing with natural talent. But, according to Parshall, the colt was lazy and infuriatingly obstinate.

He’d been difficult to break to harness and cart, fighting Doc every step of the way, eventually developing a habit of throwing himself down on the track and refusing to move. Doc solved this problem by hitching the colt tandem with a mule, allowing the beast to drag the colt along the track until he decided to obey.

Such techniques were alarmingly common back then, in the days when most people considered the horse to be little more than a reactionary bundle of nervous energy, muscle, and speed.

T

he harness horse publications and daily newspaper features wrote of Lawrence Hanover frequently. At the end of April, Parshall had the colt go a mile in 2:26, fully four seconds faster than any of his other two-year-olds. Alittle over a month later, Lawrence Hanovertrained a mile in 2:20 and then a second mile in just 2:15, extremely fast consecutive miles for a two-year-old so early in the season. It is likely Parshall was under enormous pressure from Lawrence Hanover’s owner and from the press to ensure the colt lived up to the potential expected from his royal breeding and exorbitant price tag. With this dis-play of speed, Parshall got what he needed, a nod from the press that Lawrence Hanover would not “disgrace his illustrious family.” Noticeably absent from the sports writers’ frequent reports on the up-and-coming two-year-olds was any mention of Greyhound—until midMay, when George Gahagan reported Greyhound’s thirty-one-second last quarter prior to leaving Indianapolis.

“Palin let the 2-year-old grey trotter, Greyhound, by Guy Abbey...step a quarter on a slow mile in 31 seconds, which makes it obvious that this one wasn’t sailing under false colors last fall when he was sent through the ring at the local sale as one of the best [yearling] prospects.”

While sportswriters often commented on the notable accomplishments of horses outside of their area, no one reprinted Gahagan’s somewhat defensivesounding comment on Greyhound.

It was Gahagan that had commented on Greyhound’s “brilliant speed” prior to the Indianapolis Speed Sale last November, but he seemed to be alone in his admiration. All eyes had been focused then as they were now—on the $6,800 shimmering bay colt, Lawrence Hanover. Parshall had been taking

Hanover. Parshall had been taking Lawrence Hanover over fast miles, not just brushing a fast quarter at the end of a slow mile—giving the press plenty to talk about. Palin wasn’t worried about the press silence over Greyhound; they would see what he had when the time came. In late May, the gelding went a mile in 2:18, stepping another fast final quarter. Though three seconds slower than Lawrence Hanover’s best time, it was a good time for a two-year-old in May. Palin declared his gray youngster ready to race.

Baker arrived at Columbus days before the meet opened. He thoroughly enjoyed being at the track, watching his horses train and race.The love of the horse and the sport ran deep within him—he cared profoundly about the wellbeing of his horses and the promotion of the sport. Baker wanted to help everything and everyone he loved and cared for to thrive. He stood by the

rail, watching Palin work Greyhound a moderate mile, going the final quarter in a fast clip. He clicked the stopwatch in his palm, glanced at it, and smiled.

Greyhound definitely had speed, but was slow to get going. He just wasn’t built for fast starts.

alin jogged Greyhound back to the gap where Hogan waited. Palin handed off the gray and took the black pacer His Majesty from his groom. Baker looked down at the notes he had on the four-year-old colt he’d recently purchased for $10,800. He puffed his cigar thoughtfully; he and Palin had a strong stable this year. The Gem, Senator Bedell, Lindy Volo—all were good horses, and there were others still back in Indianapolis that would be ready later in the season. He sat down to watch his new colt jog, pleased with his purchase.

Later that afternoon, with his everpresent straw boat hat, cane, and cigar, Baker walked through the stables, stopping at each stall to visit the occupant.

With gifts of carrots and sugar cubes, he spoke to them softly and stroked their glistening necks. He greeted each groom by name, even the swipes that bathed and rubbed down the horses after a workout.

He knew them all. Palin watched the elderly gent smile and greet each man he encountered and shook his head; he didn’t know half these guys by name.

Greyhound pushed his head over the stall door at the sound of Baker’s voice, ears forward, eyes bright, and lips stretched and seeking. If Baker wasn’t fast enough getting to him, Greyhound would stomp his foot or rap it against the stall door. These antics endeared the gelding to Baker even more. Greyhound soon became the stable favorite.

or adult amateur Kristina Christiansen, stepping into the National Horse Show ring wasn’t just a dream fulfilled but the culmination of more than 30 years of dedication.

Since its founding in 1883, the National Horse Show has stood as one of show jumping’s most prestigious stages. Once held at Madison Square Garden in New York City and now at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, it remains more than a competition.

Christiansen’s passion began at Lion Hill Farm in Easton, Connecticut, where she accompanied her mother, who had returned to riding. By age 7, she was taking weekly lessons and was hooked. “I took it very seriously from the beginning,” she said.

She started showing at local schooling shows and dreamed of Madison Square Garden. At 14, with help from her parents and earnings from TV commercials, she bought her first horse and began competing at rated shows across the Northeast. “That horse taught me how to ride and to be tough,” she said.

Later, she found Willa, a reserved mare on the ground but electric in the ring. Though not suited for equitation, Willa

revealed Christiansen’s spark in the jumper ring. “We shared a soul,” she said. Willa even accompanied her to the University of Delaware, where Christiansen competed on the equestrian team and became captain.

After college, she moved to New York City but kept riding through half leases in Connecticut and New York. Balancing work, marriage, and a young son, she pursued her competitive goals within her means. Qualifying for the National Horse Show was never the hardest part; timing, resources, and horse partnerships often held her back.

This year felt different thanks to Cordoba 73, “Dora,” an 11-year-old Holsteiner mare she leased. After a strong showing at Marshall & Sterling, Christiansen decided to take the leap.

“I realized we were competitive against top riders and that the National Horse Show was within reach,” she said.

Arriving at the Kentucky Horse Park, she was struck by the atmosphere. “I walked into the Alltech Arena and thought, ‘Wow, I’m here, I did it,’” she said. What impressed her most was the camaraderie. “Everyone is so kind, so supportive.

People juggle careers, families, and horses, yet they’re all there cheering each other on.”

Dora rose to the occasion. After strategizing with trainer Heather Gnewuch of West Lane Riding, Christiansen executed her adult equitation championship rounds almost flawlessly.

They earned scores in the 80s and finished sixth in a competitive field. “Everything came together at the right moment with this amazing horse,” she said. With her mother cheering in the stands, Christiansen added, “At 39, it brought me back to my junior days and put everything into perspective.”

She is candid about what it takes to succeed as an adult amateur. Her advice begins at home: honest communication and flexibility. Each week, she and her husband map out schedules before she slots in barn time. Some weekends lean toward riding; others toward family.

Financial planning is another pillar. She keeps a separate “horse fund” and chooses shows strategically. Cutting back to two days a week was necessary. “Would I love to ride three or four days? Of course,” she said. “But I think I’m proof you don’t need to be in the saddle every day to achieve something like competing at the National Horse Show.”

After achieving her childhood dream, Christiansen isn’t slowing down. “Now I have the bug—I want to go back,” she said. While her ultimate fantasy involves winter circuits in Wellington or Ocala, her next goal is to invest in owning and developing a horse with a trainer.

For now, Kristina remains grateful and motivated, with the dream of the National Horse Show fulfilled.

How Firmdale Hotels’ WILLOW KEMP channels her lifelong love of horses into creative discipline and inspired design.

iven the choice, I like to arrive at interviews looking put together— and, ideally, dry. But New York City had other plans, unleashing a torrential downpour of epic proportions the moment I stepped outside.

Yet, without sounding too much like a Pollyanna, the woes of my soggy shoes and limp linen pants miraculously disappeared as we entered the lobby of the Warren Street Hotel in the city’s TriBeCa neighborhood. The newest Firmdale property in the city, it’s the third to open in New York, joining The Crosby and The Whitby, and reflects the same imaginative storytelling and welcoming aesthetic as the company’s eight hotels in London.

We were there to meet Willow Kemp, Firmdale Hotels Art Ambassador & Design Director for Kit Kemp Design Studio. The middle daughter of Firmdale’s founders, Tim and Kit Kemp, she is a key member of Kit Kemp Design Studio and instrumental in the architectural and interior design of the Warren Street Hotel, as well as sourcing the inspiring collection of original art displayed 44 | E Q UE S T R I A N L I V I N G | WI N TER | 2026

throughout the property.

But Willow wanted to talk about horses. And so did we.

She began riding in the New Forest, a national park on England’s south coast where wild ponies still roam freely. “I started riding from a very young age, 4 or 5 years old, on New Forest ponies. You can go for hours without seeing anyone. My two sisters and I used to bomb around on the ponies and jump the gorse bushes,” she laughs. “Eventually, we started with the New Forest Pony Club, and we did all disciplines, including eventing and show jumping. I also did tetrathlon, which involves running, swimming, shooting, and cross-country riding. So, it was a great opportunity for everyone of all ages to get together. It was a big informative part of my life, and I still have my best friends from tetrathlon.”

Willow went on to British eventing at the junior level and eventually found her way to dressage, which emphasizes the importance of foundation—much like in her creative work. “When you’re drawing or painting, your drawing is the foundation, and without that solid knowledge of the

structure and the composition, your painting is not going to be any good,” she explains.

As much as she enjoyed eventing, dressage became her focus. While earning a degree in architecture at Cambridge University, she concentrated even more on the discipline and eventually went to Germany, drawn by the country’s dressage heritage and warmblood breeding. “I found a yard where I started working during the holidays, and I fell in love with this young, 3-year-old stallion called Dragon Heart,” Willow smiles. “He was a very chunky chestnut [Westfalian] stallion with a white face and four white socks. He’s a horse where you really sit in the horse, not on the horse. And he was fearless.”

Owning him was a dream come true. “We learned together,” Willow admits. “So, I’ve ridden him since he was 4 years old, and trained him up to grand prix in dressage. He’s 22, and it’s [been] my longest relationship. I’ve been all around Europe with him, in international 4* grand prix, competing for Great Britain. I used to drive myself in the

horsebox, and it was just me and Dragon learning together. He really was my horse of a lifetime.”

oday, she has offspring from him, including his daughter, and breeds one foal a year. “I found a good bloodline and the young ones are coming through, which is exciting because Dragon’s enjoying his retirement. He hacks about a bit and enjoys time in the field. So that is my real balance,” notes Willow.

After university, Willow spent a year riding full-time, then rode when she could while earning a master’s in sculpture from Düsseldorf Kunstakademie in Germany. At the end of that year, she and Dragon Heart returned to England, where she began working at Kit Kemp Design Studio.

lighting, and rugs. “When working in a family business, you need to find your own niche, your own area,” she muses. “I’m one of three girls, in the middle, and you have to work to your strengths.

I found my little niche in working on the collaborations we do. So, that’s fabric or the lighting

collections we design, or furniture, or the tea services, and all those lovely projects. There is some sort of magic that happens in the spirit of collaboration because it’s in that partnership that something quite unexpected comes from it. So, I think that’s a rewarding process.

“I’m also very passionate about the art because I feel that’s what gives a building soul and character. We’re quite a small team, about 10 of us in a London townhouse, but we focus on every detail right down to the smallest thing.”

Kit Kemp properties are known for distinctive design, a celebration of color, individuality, and an elaborate blend of fabrics, artwork, and furnishings that feel both welcoming and perfectly balanced.

While the result appears effortless, creating the intriguing environments is far from happenstance.

“We can be bold, but it has to feel calm and not hectic,” says Willow. “That’s not easy, but that’s the joy of it.” Kit, the creative director for all Firmdale properties, reviews every scheme before it’s implemented in a room. The plans include everything from furniture layout to cornices, paint details, fabric, lighting, and more. If the team can’t find the right pattern or piece, they’ll design it.

A memorable arrival is a Firmdale hallmark.

“When you arrive, you’ve had a long journey, and you have to have a sense of arrival when you come into that lobby,” Willow emphasizes. “We want our interiors to speak. They’ve got to have our signature on them, and they must have a point of view.”

Large-scale artworks are positioned in public spaces for everyone to enjoy, giving each room a sense of identity. “Oh, and a friendly face behind the desk is very important,” she adds.

ven with the demands of her job, Willow rides a few mornings a week or schedules time around meetings.

“There was a time when I was in the studio thinking I should be training, and then vice versa when I was training,” she notes. “I’d think, ‘oh, I should be back in the studio,’ but now I’ve got a good balance, but it CONTINUED ON PAGE 52 took a while.”

She admits that balance can be tricky. Training a horse to grand prix is all-consuming and a long-term project. “It’s all about decision-making. It’s small aids, it’s a relationship with an animal, and that’s what I love about the sport. It combines everything for me. It’s nature, being outside, artistry, and being creative.”

Over the years, she’s trained with notable figures including Sune Hansen, Nicky Barrett, and Peter Storr, one of the dressage world’s best-known judges.

She and Dragon Heart also trained with Carl Hester.

“Honestly, he is the nicest, funniest, and most generous person with his time and knowledge, and I think that’s so rare. He’s taught me so much,” Willow says.

he draws parallels between progressing with a horse and building a hotel. Both require patience—and a long-term view.

“In dressage, you buy a young horse, and you know that they don’t have the strength to cope with their power or movement at the beginning, but you’re preparing

them every step of the way. You get to one level and then on to the next, but you can’t skip the process.

It’s the same with building a hotel. You’re buying the site a few years in advance, accumulating and storing art and furnishings, and imagining where they’ll go. It’s roughly a three-year project from start to completion.”

In addition to her design role, Willow now leads guided tours of the hotel’s eclectic art collection, sharing the stories behind each piece. From there, guests join her as she meanders to nearby neighborhood galleries or museums featuring artists of note.

As we wrapped up the interview and started to leave, we turned back to admire Warren Street’s teal turquoise façade with its yellow peak. “We say the building has a yellow hat on top,” laughs Willow.

“That was quite a risk, but it’s a real identity for the building, and already it sets the tone of a happy place.”

ited next to a band of cottonwoods and aspens occupying the dry riverbed of the Snake River, Black Fox Ranch consists of a couple’s primary residence and a barn with stables. The design and planning draw from the site’s history as a working cattle ranch, with 100-year-old irrigation ditches, remnants of a 19th-century trapper’s cabin, corrals, and game trails (seasonally frequented by 400+ head of elk) that crisscross the 35-acre ranch.

The clients’ choice of site was influenced by their appreciation of wildlife and conservation, as well

as their love of horses and desire to return the land to its historic roots as a working ranch with livestock and hay production. The barn, corral, and pastures are situated close to the residence, ensuring that the horses are a constant visual presence. The neighborhood has access to miles of private riding trails that access the Snake River and Grand Teton National Park.

The low-slung, three-bedroom residence gradually rises from the meadow, capped by a compact second story containing the primary bedroom suite and an office suite with access to a rooftop deck. The long, low, roof slope is structured with a cross-laminated timber

roof system. The deep overhang creates cover for an outdoor dining terrace that frames Teton Mountain views to the west and the Gros Ventre Range to the east.

Exterior spaces wrap the perimeter of the building, allowing access to the panoramic views and one’s preference for sun or shade throughout the day.

The house and barn’s forms and materials nod to the site’s past. The home’s L-shaped plan

separates the main living spaces—living, dining, kitchen, den, and primary bedroom—from secondary areas including guest quarters, gym, sauna, and laundry room. Living areas on the ground floor open to sheltered outdoor spaces that include a fire pit, pizza oven, and a stand of Aspen trees. Throughout the long side of the L, are framed views of iconic Sheep Mountain.

Dark-stained cedar, steel, and board-formed concrete define the exterior of the buildings. Inside,

white oak and polished concrete floors, custom steel, and walnut millwork create a grounded, earthy warmth.

New topsoil and native seeding were added to restore the land, and the newly planted bosque of aspen trees introduces shade and establishes a sense of place. Black Fox Ranch helps the owners return to their equestrian roots and bring the historic ranch into the future.

ven among the luxurious surroundings of Wellington’s elite farms, 3 Graces Dressage stands apart. Visitors arrive through an immaculately landscaped entrance, past meticulous paddocks to an exquisite center courtyard, where oversized entrance doors invite with a sense of ease and calm.

Inspired by the client’s request to prioritize her horses’ well-being over all else, Blackburn Architects began by separating the facility’s riding/working and equine leisure areas. Every design decision branched off from that fundamental mission statement.

The clients wanted peaceful resting spaces that were separate from the demands of training. The 12 stalls were to be the horses’ quiet retreat, so rehabilitation and treatment areas are separate from the riding arena with its two-level viewing areas and the training side of the barn.

Breezeways, the airy connections between the stalls and riding areas, are clad in warm woods and rich finishes, creating an elegant transition between bustling and quiet areas.

Outside, a grass riding area with a small hill feels safe and peaceful. Another goal was to keep the facility bright and open while limiting heat from the summer sun. Deep overhangs and screens help to control sun and bugs and make the most of breezes, so this Florida barn is comfortable year-round.

mid the rolling hills of Hershey, Pennsylvania, is a newly built barn reminiscent of days gone by.

Constructed with the technology and precision of the 21st century, its interior recalls a simpler time, when life on the farm meant meals were cooked atop a wood stove, iceboxes preserved food, and a walk in nearly any direction led through endless fields of wheat.

This custom-built, 6,000-square-foot studio barn was designed to fulfill two distinct functions: the first floor houses the farm’s agricultural needs and provides shelter for sheep when they aren’t roaming the nearby hills; the second floor provides a luxurious area for hosting friends and family. With its intriguing blend of nooks and crannies, wide-open spaces, and secret doors to hidden rooms, the barn becomes a delightful space to explore, with custom craftsmanship found in every room.

typology, built into the side of a hill to maximize usable space and give points of entry on both levels. Its distinctive fieldstone walls encircle the first floor, the base of the silo, and surrounding retaining walls, while cedar siding clads the second story and loft. Black custom windows, doors, and architectural accents lend a modern feel to the otherwise rustic, traditional materials. The timber frame structure uses customary mortise- and tenon-joints with tongue-andgroove ceilings to allow the warmth of exposed wood to permeate the interior space. Handcrafted iron and steel accents can be found throughout, from door handles and stair railings to chandeliers and door latches.

Inside, a massive two-story fieldstone fireplace serves as the focal point of the openconcept great room, with additional bespoke details like the hand-hewn mantle and stone slab lintels. Large windows provide an unobstructed view of the surrounding hills, while a secret door accessed through a sitting room opens to reveal the attached silo, which offers additional living space.

n a newly constructed 100-acre cultural park on the banks of the Huangpu River in the center of Shanghai, this new equestrian facility was completed in May 2024 and represents the importance of the growing equestrian industry in China.

The center provides state-of-the -art event facilities for international and local equestrian events, including the Longines Global Champions Tour, within a quarantine bubble that enables the re-exportation of international horses after events.

The 275,000 square-foot facilities include a multi-use main stadium that seats 4,000

spectators, including a 1,000 VIP stand, an indoor training arena with 400 seats, an integrated equine walking trail, 125 air-conditioned stables, a fully operational veterinary hospital, a dedicated farrier facility, and isolation stables.

The building spans five floors, has two basement levels of car parking, multiple retail and function areas, horse-truck loading and unloading, and parking areas for three large horse trucks, and is linked by tunnel to the adjacent subway station.

hrough collaboration with seasoned equestrians and show jumping professionals, Wendy Valdes of Forest Edge Farm and Tiffany Foster of Little Creek Equestrian, the facility design and layout came together naturally.

Their experience with previous equestrian facility design and construction for their own use was a definite advantage when envisioning the layout and orientation of the stalls and amenities around the indoor arena. The arena surface is 120 by 200 feet, and is hydrated with an Ebb & Flow watering system. An insulated roof and ceiling, along with large ceiling fans help regulate conditions inside this arena in all seasons.

The generous windows on one side wall of the WeCover arena bring in lots of bright, natural light.

The project began with acreage in Langley, British Columbia, Canada, that consisted of a home, small stall barn, and pastures. The house and barn were refurbished, and the remainder of the property has been developed with a series of outdoor fenced grass paddocks, an outdoor ring, and a covered exerciser. The main facility, where Forest Edge Farm and Little Creek Equestrian are housed, consists of an efficiently

laid out floor plan containing a 28-stall barn with grooming stalls/tack rooms/therapy stalls, plus a farrier room, and a veterinarian room. Designed and built for Jeff and Sondra LeHew, the property embodies the timeless beauty and symmetry of classic barn architecture while offering every modern amenity a discerning equestrian could imagine.

At the heart of the farm stands a striking bank barn, balanced by two buildouts and a gable lean-to. The upper level showcases a hemlock timber frame with soaring hammer trusses. A disco ball hangs from the rafters, adding a playful touch. Openings on the floor allow hay to drop directly into the stalls below.

Downstairs, the stable is both elegant and practical. Eight 13-by-13-foot horse stalls provide comfort and space, while a tack room with bath, a feed room with a utility closet, and two wash stalls ensure every need is met. ew Energy Works collaborates with an array of talented architects and builders to execute bespoke equestrian and recreational barns and homes throughout the United States.

Led by the architect David Shirley, they were contacted by the owners, avid horse lovers, to create a horse barn. Shirley explained, “Once the design process started, we spent time listening to the owners about their desire for function, their love for the noble equines who will inhabit the space, and the deep passion they have for equestrian sport.”

The team developed three different concepts for the ranch’s remote build site. The first was a very straightforward utilitarian 70 | EQ UE S T R I A N L I V IN G | WI N TER | 2026

heavy timber, the second a classic timber frame, and the third a design inspired by the rib-vault cathedral ceilings commonly found throughout Europe.

“To our surprise, when the clients came into our office to review these three very different options, they were saying; ‘You son of a gun!

You know darn well which one we are going to pick!,’” David expounded. “After that meeting, the clients really trusted us to fully design the rest of the space and have our timber frame shop start working on fabricating the timbers, and raise the frame on their beautiful ranch property.”

The practicality and beauty of the cathedral design, with its wow-factor, allowed for better airflow, creating a healthier space for the equine inhabitants and providing additional storage for various farm necessities. The team also put extensive consideration into how the

barn would be oriented on the landscape, taking full advantage of the surrounding mountain views with an abundance of exterior porches for relaxing when not in the stables or on a ride.

“A strong foundation of communication, collaboration, and trust is important on any project, but for legacy structures like the Wild Horse Ranch, it is fundamental to the success of the design. It is such an honor when clients place that kind of trust in us, and the results really show that,” said David.

A structure as untamed as its name, the Wild Horse Ranch’s collaborative design is evident through its thoughtful cathedral-inspired trusses, ornate functionality, and recreationally minded construction. Every high-craft element is a tribute to the owners and their beloved horses that now call the barn home.

lysium Equine was designed with a focus on purpose, function, and long-term impact. The team at Quinis Design Works strove to plan the site with Elysium’s long-term vision in mind.

They considered building placement, efficient layout, and innovative product solutions. The facility’s layout emphasizes training operations and central amenities.

It features 14 stalls, four of which are 16 by 16 foot for large-breed jumpers or mares and foals. The barn is designed with a circular layout, with amenity rooms at the center and stalls at the exterior. For general horse care, there are two wash bays and two grooming bays. Secure tack rooms are equipped with both interior and exterior access and are complete with tack lockers with removable saddle racks, hooks, and vented shelves. One tack room is for owners’ private use, and one is for boarders. There are spaces for feed, short-term hay, and tools within the barn. Ventilated blanket closets are located at the rear entry doors, offering a space for soiled and clean blanket storage. There is

visibility from the secure vet lab room to a courtyard area for veterinary use or general examinations. This design allows for horses to be examined in the comfort of their own barn and to remain in a familiar, monitored place.

The overall stall and paddock design prioritizes ease of care, with steel board fencing, a drainage system under the footing, and drive-through access to paddocks for efficient cleaning.

Elysium Equine offers varied stall and paddock sizes, with options for stall front styles and feeding/watering systems. Full grillwork on stall doors and Dutch doors enhances visibility and natural airflow. Each stall and paddock is also equipped with automatic waterers connected to meters for tracking water intake.

Other features like infrared heating in wash stalls, short-term hay storage within the barn, and ceiling-mounted hose reels for wash bays in both wings underscore the facility’s commitment to optimal functionality and comfort for both horses and their caretakers. Attached to the 100-by-200-foot indoor arena is a 7-bay garage for bedding, long-term hay storage, farm vehicles, and utility housing.

ess than 15 minutes in and I’ve fallen at the first hurdle. Around me, would-be wranglers, revoltingly competent one and all, are hard at it, pounding stakes and wrestling tents. A heap of olive-green nylon, my presumed accommodation for the next three days, lies spread out before me. I squint helplessly at the instructions; not one word makes a lick of sense.

“Want some help with that tent?” A mustachioed cowboy, resplendent in chaps, and a dark-haired girl with the kind of saucer-sized belt buckle money can’t buy, set to work. Ten minutes and my temporary home stands proudly. The cowboy sidles over and whispers, “Your spur straps are on backward.” Clearly, I do not belong here.

La Union Ranch, which sits in the otherwise inhospitable Chihuahuan Desert in the southeast corner of New Mexico, is a coyote’s saunter from El Paso and the Mexican border, and here I am, about to experience my first-ever cattle drive. As an English-riding, polo-playing East Coast city slicker with feverish cowgirl fantasies, it’s a dream come true. For regular Equestrian Living readers, this predilection of mine is nothing new. But at long last, opportunity’s Lucchese-booted foot has kicked at my door.

It was the start of the summer, and a change of scenery was in order. I headed west to New Mexico to spend a few months learning to ride Western. I’d barely hit Amarillo before the mania took hold, much to the benefit of Cavender’s Boot City. I left with an impressive pair, as well as a chocolate brown Stetson

and several colorful shirts of varying Western motifs.

By my third day in Las Cruces, I found Armstrong Equine. When it comes to Western riding, they don’t come better than Josh Armstrong.

Armstrong Equine, based in La Mesa, New Mexico, was founded by Josh’s venerable father, Dr. Joseph Armstrong, and focuses on breeding, training, and competing high-quality performance horses—Quarter Horses, of course. Josh has been training horses for his entire adult life and is a fierce competitor, but he also shares his expertise by offering instruction and conducting clinics both in the US and Europe. Watching Josh ride or work cattle is to witness a breathtaking level of communication between horse and rider. Within five minutes of seeing Josh ride, I understand that he’s the cowboy to teach me how it’s done.

With two weeks of lessons under my belt, I’m back in Amarillo watching Josh, his 15-year-old daughter Georgia, and client Judy Ruiz compete in the AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships. It’s there that I discover Armstrong Equine is to host a cattle drive in the fall. Thus, an obsesssion is born. And so now, after a summer spent training on young Georgia’s spectacular barrel racing horse Ruby (a Quarter Horse obviously), I’m ready to ride the range.

Fast forward to October. Once the intransigent tent was erected, I moseyed (as cowgirls do) over for dinner, served from an honest-to-heavens, 19th-century chuck wagon. That’s where George and Mary Terry prepare the kind of meals that fueled cowboys in the era of thousand-mile cattle drives.

Over bubbling bowls of beef stew, my fellow wranglers and I got acquainted.

Riders from all over the country were here to chase Josh Armstrong’s cows, and for more than a few, it’s a repeat visit.

The excitement was high at our new home on the range, and everyone turned in early, eager to rest up for the coming adventure.

Each rider was assigned a horse for the duration, and I was delighted to see my regular mount, Ruby. Mind you, I’d only worked her in the ring, but she was always a dream and delightfully responsive. First impressions were good, but I had a lot to learn about Ruby over the next three days, some of it terrifying.

It took a two-hour ride to find the cattle. The desert stretched out endlessly before us—as it does. Sand, blazing sun (if not saddles), scrubby mesquite, a glorious patchwork of sameness. We divided into four groups, two led by 76 | E Q UE S T R I A N L I V I N G | WI N TER | 2026

15-year-old Georgia and 13-year-old

Eddie Armstrong. Both are as mature as the range; in this environment, they’re the grownups, we riders the children.

With no reason to hurry, we spent most of the time walking, but once in a while we’d put on a burst of speed, just for the pure, dusty joy of it.

At the gathering point, Dr. Armstrong and his wife Rusty set out sandwiches and water for a quick lunch. Then, the real work began. First came sorting, Josh patiently explaining how to approach and move cattle. He’s a gifted teacher, in both the riding ring and the wide-open desert.

Once the 25-head herd was assembled, he positioned the riders and explained the fine points of keeping recalcitrant cattle moving as one. I suspect with real hands, you could move such a small herd with maybe three or four riders. There are more than 20 of us.

Driving the cattle back toward the ranch was deceptively easy, at least on this first day. The desert is a curious place, ever ready to remind you who’s boss. Under the bright sky, we occasionally encountered the dearly departed, their bones scorched a brilliant white.

The ultimate symbol of the West, a denuded longhorn skull, lay in my path. I had to have it. It was surprisingly heavy. Ruby was restive, and I needed both hands to keep her from taking off like her tail was on fire. Regretfully, I jettisoned my trophy. Josh said we could retrieve it later. I couldn’t hide my

doubt—one small skull in 50,000 acres of mesquite and sand. Oh, me of little faith.

By the grace of the Great Spirit, we got the cattle back to the ranch. It was all fun and games now, as we took turns to move cows between the corrals. Everyone was enjoying themselves, working in tune, even the cows. Then, things turned serious. It was branding time.

The more experienced hands, including 13-year-old Eddie, stayed in the pen with the calves. A grim fire smoldered nearby. A black bull calf was roped and wrestled to the ground. Two hands pinned him as he bawled his outrage, and his mother bellowed from the neighboring pen. Young Eddie brandished the iron, and smoke rose from the black fur. My fantasy had turned starkly real.

“Thank heavens that’s over,” I said to myself.

The black calf struggled to its feet and fled to the herd. I nudged Ruby out of

the gate. Playtime was over, and these angry calves are not pets.

Gustatory hypocrite that I am, none of this prevented me from savoring the aroma of our succulent dinner at the chuck wagon. George and Mary had outdone themselves with a fine brisket.

And the cobbler was blueberry.

Every night after dinner, we gathered around the campfire to trade yarns about the day’s escapades. It turned out that Josh is not only a gifted horseman but could also play the ukulele, and carry a tune. On Saturday, we were treated to a performance by Burt Ferguson from Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, and Tim Thompson from El Paso, who strummed git-ars and sang cowboy oldies. Everyone joined in on “Mammas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.”

aturday, we enjoyed a longer ride, but thankfully, there was no branding, just a pleasant afternoon pushing cattle back to the ranch. But Ruby is growing ever more excitable with each ride. Nothing I couldn’t manage.

Yet. Young Eddie mounted his father’s truck, and we set off in search of my cow skull. He was a pretty good driver for a 13-year-old. That’s ranch life for you. But no luck. Eddie headed back to the ranch to haul hay, and Josh took the wheel to continue our search. Once again, like played-out prospectors, we returned empty-handed.

e were told that Sunday would be an easy day.

But from the moment I mounted up, Ruby was prancing. I ignored the urge to tighten and kept her on a loose rein, but I stayed close to Georgia.

Ruby was her horse; she was a steadying influence, surely. Ruby took it upon herself to break into a lope, and I pulled her back. Suddenly, one hundred yards ahead, several horses broke into a canter.

Remember now: Ruby is a barrel racer and a Quarter Horse. They got their name for a reason. They’re bred for sprinting and are faster than Thoroughbreds over the quarter mile.

They can top 55 miles per hour, state limits be damned. Ruby is built for speed.

I believe that I screamed.

The desert passed by in a blur. Yes, yes, I thought, my life insurance is paid up. We were making straight for a mesquite bush. “Oh, bury me not…” Can

a cactus break your fall? Do I want to find out? I pulled back hard, and miraculously, Ruby slowed. I guess she didn’t care for the look of those prickly shrubs, either.

We sidled up next to Georgia. “I should have mentioned, for barrel horses, pulling back means wait, not stop.” File that for next time.

Dust settled, so to speak. I had an epiphany: I hadn’t fallen off or even been

unbalanced (the screaming was all show). Six months ago, this sort of “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” would have put me headfirst in the scrub. My time at Armstrong Equine had clearly borne fruit.

Grudgingly, I patted Ruby on the neck; “Goodish girl.” I came to New Mexico unsure of myself, a hapless dudette. Truth be told, I hadn’t changed much. But the West had taken hold of me. Come next October, I’ll be back on the range. Josh Armstrong might make a cowgirl of me yet.

Postscript: Back at camp on Saturday evening, I discovered the skull fairy had left a gift. My macabre longhorn! Only a fool would doubt Josh Armstrong. Overjoyed, I promised that when I next drove down 5th Avenue, the skull would be strapped to the hood of my orange Subaru. How the Manhattanites will stare.

f you want to test the limits of a family vacation, try planning one for four generations— from a 5-month-old baby to a 76-year-old grandfather, two sides of the family, a dog, and a major bucket-list horse show.

Somehow, Traverse City proved to be the rare vacation that checked every box.

My husband’s side of the family are proud Michiganders, but mine had never set foot in the Great Lakes State.

After years of hearing him relive his college days in the Upper Peninsula and rave about one of his favorite “up north” spots, we finally made the trip happen. We rented a spacious Airbnb just outside downtown, directly on Grand Traverse Bay, with plenty of room for 11 of us and a perfect place to retreat during infant naps and early toddler bedtimes.

With family flying in from four cities, Traverse City’s easy airport made arrival simple. Walking through baggage claim and seeing banners for Traverse City Horse Shows only heightened

my excitement. We arrived after dark, unpacked, and went straight to bed.

The next morning, I slipped out with our dog, Lexi, and a cup of coffee as the sun rose across the bay. Even through the haze from Canadian wildfires, the view was stunning. Our rental had a private beach and a long dock that led into water so shallow and clear it looked transparent. Lexi, exuberant by nature and ecstatic about water, bounded through the calm ripples while I waded

out, feeling like the lake might go on forever.

That ritual became the start and end of most days that week. Even my 4-year-old could walk endlessly through the warm, clear water, trying to catch up to Lexi while pretending to be a mermaid or dolphin. Despite being off a main road, our stretch of beach felt blissfully uncrowded—offering lake life entertainment, a quiet spot to nap in a beach chair, and a place to gather for meals and card games.

Traverse City met our multigenerational needs with ease. Some preferred peaceful kayak paddles, while the thrillseekers set off on high-speed jet skis across the bay. Everyone found their own way to soak in the lake’s magic. The surprisingly warm water was clear as glass and shifted between stunning shades of emerald, turquoise, and sapphire. We even enjoyed a chartered sailboat excursion together. The lake activities felt endless.

A major highlight was Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and its iconic dune climb—challenging and beautiful.

In true multigenerational fashion, some of our group stayed at the top, taking in sweeping views of Lake Michigan and holding my sleeping infant, while the rest of us braved the descent. The sign warning “the only way out is up, rescues cost $3,000” wasn’t exactly reassuring, but it didn’t stop us from convincing my dad and our enthusiastic 4-year-old to join in.

Bounding down the dune felt almost like flying, and a plunge in the lake at the

bottom was exhilarating. The climb back up—450 feet in full bear-crawl mode— was the hard part. I’ll never forget my daughter racing ahead, turning back to cheer, “You got this, Mommy! Deep breaths!” The 20-somethings made it up in under 20 minutes, my husband and I (with a toddler sometimes on his back) in about 30, and even my dad conquered it in under an hour. A true bucket-list moment I’ll always treasure.

Despite all the adventures, I couldn’t

wait to get to Flintfields Horse Park, home of the Traverse City Horse Shows (TCHS). Just 15 minutes from downtown and our rental, the location couldn’t be more convenient. My mom and I were met by Gary Howe, TCHS’s marketing and communications manager and a Traverse City local, who gave us an insider tour of the grounds.

show series in the country. According to Howe, the average competitor stays about 30 days, and the human-to-horse ratio is 5 to 1—well above the industry average of 3.2. More barns are choosing Traverse City as their summer base, and as Howe puts it, “Once people come once, they find a way to come again.”

The community is deeply connected to the show. Every week, 100% of ticket sale proceeds benefit a local nonprofit through the Charity Ticket Program.

TCHS also hosts a Farm-to-Stable dinner series featuring local chefs, farmers, and winemakers that celebrates the region’s thriving food culture.

The show continues to expand each year with new permanent barns, beautifully maintained rings and footing (many with Ebb and Flow systems), new trails in the adjacent rolling fields, and even a gated equestrian community, Grand Prix Village North, under development.

Between the impeccable grounds, vibrant atmosphere and,—yes—excellent house margaritas, it feels like an equestrian oasis.

Our visit coincided with Major League Show Jumping’s CSI5* week, and I was ecstatic. It’s not every day you get to watch riders like Kent Farrington, Daniel Bluman, and Lillie Keenan in

person. That evening, my whole family joined us in the VIP Club for the Grand Prix. The presentation, décor, and food exceeded expectations: an abundant buffet with salads, charcuterie, carving stations, seafood, and even toddlerfriendly options like chicken tenders and a s’mores bar. I personally went back more than once for the scallops over risotto and king crab legs.

My daughter spent the evening at the front of the VIP Club cheering for every horse and rider, chasing the unicorn mascot handing out T-shirts, and was lucky

enough to give a carrot to a horse settling in for the night.

At the end of our trip, I couldn’t believe that even my mother- and fatherin-law said their favorite activity was watching the Grand Prix. They both expressed that the facility, the decadent food, and the class itself exceeded expectations—and that’s high praise from two non-equestrians.

Traverse City’s local farming culture is impressive. The region is known for its fertile farmland, orchards, and vineyards.

Small producers supply restaurants, breweries, and markets. Our favorites included Mari Vineyard, Farm Club, and two standouts in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons—a restored and reimagined former asylum—Sugar 2 Salt and Trattoria Stella.

Everywhere we drove, we were surrounded by color: shimmering blue lakes, rolling fields dotted with wildflowers, and tidy gardens spilling over with floral arrangements at every restaurant and storefront.

Traverse City exceeded every expectation I had for a multigenerational family vacation. And next time, I hope to bring my horse along for a Traverse City PAGE 113 summer.

Artist Bio Alasdair Banks was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and studied drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art. He went on to work in arts management, parttime lecturing, and exhibition curation.

During this period, he began creating large charcoal and pastel works focused on sporting events, particularly equine sport. His dynamic, energetic style stood apart in a field often defined by photo-realism.

A collaboration with Olympia International Show Jumping in 2000 led to a series of prestigious residencies that centered on public engagement. Working in front of audiences became a defining part of his artistic practice and ultimately inspired the creation of Fine Art Live, which has since been featured at major events including Badminton, Hickstead, and Chatsworth.

A three-year association with Lloyds Banking Group followed, featuring live events at venues including the Savoy, the Museum of Wales, and the Edinburgh Festival. He later undertook residencies at Glorious Goodwood and the Festival of Speed, producing large-scale outdoor works under public observation.

Recent partnerships with Aston Martin, Volvo, and Lotus have expanded his motorsport profile, and he is currently the resident artist with the Jim Clark Trust.

He is an associate member of the Society of Equestrian Artists.

EQ: Can you tell me a bit about your career and how you got to where you are today? What led you to an interest in art?

Was there an inspiration that led you to specialize specifically in horse racing and equestrian subjects?

AB: Very importantly, in the vast majority of my work, the rider is as vital as the horse, an integrated unit driving forward.

I’m not so hot at doing horses standing in a field!

AB: After a brief career in automotive management, I spent four years at Edinburgh College of Art, gaining a qualification in drawing and painting.

My immersion in the visual arts continued with lecturing, setting up art at the junction, and event management, but also committing to developing my own work, which included welded steel, bronze, and ceramic sculpture. For a number of years, live drawing from the model has been a weekly imperative.

Why horses? The following quotes sum up my position: “They are creatures of pathos and empathy, but more to the point, a very aesthetically pleasing jumble of lines and shapes.”

“If I paint a wild horse, you might not see the horse, but surely you will see the wildness...” These views have underpinned my equestrian art for the past quarter of a century.

EQ: Could you describe the concept behind Fine Art LIVE? How has this format impacted your artistic process, and what kind of engagement do you see from the audience during a live creation?

EQ: Looking back at your career, which accomplishment do you feel best represents your artistic evolution?

AB: On reflection, I would think that my residences at the likes of Glorious Goodwood, The Gold Cup at Cheltenham, the Royal Windsor Horse Show, and Show Jumping at Olympia had a lasting effect. You are working live in front of discerning and knowledgeable enthusiasts. No hiding place!

EQ: Your work is known for conveying the “passion and power” of the sport. What is it about the form, movement, and spirit of a horse that you find most compelling to translate onto canvas?

AB: This project has two distinct parts: One is for corporate events. At fundraising, client presentations, or other corporate events, I create a picture, usually large and on canvas, that is auctioned during the course of the event, usually for charity.

The second is for equestrian and sporting events. It’s an opportunity to get the work out of the studio and into the public domain. Big live painting creates interest and generates sales—way better than galleries. The downside: five nights camping at events like the International Horse Trials at Scone Palace with attendant Scottish weather!

EQ: Your use of bold color is a striking trademark, with horses often appearing to “storm out of a bright blue or hot red base.” Could you walk us through your color theory, and the emotional impact you aim to create with these vibrant, high-contrast backgrounds?

AB: As to “color theory,” I don’t have one! Just intuitive, expressive stuff.

Sometimes it works, often it doesn’t. I’ve got a big wastepaper basket.

EQ: On the flip side, I’ve seen your monochrome drawings – what do you think is the value of working in black and white?

AB: I work a lot using only charcoal, conte crayon, and most importantly, a continued on page 92

rubber. Without the sometimes distraction of color, form can be explored and exploited to express the movement. The work of artist Frank Auerbach has been a constant inspiration. His use of these simple, timeless materials is really powerful. The drawing “Polo Mix” is my take on his style.

EQ: You work in a wide range of mediums—from large canvases to small ink studies, watercolors, and pastels. How do you decide which medium and scale are best suited for a particular subject or mood?

AB: Clearly, the traditional oil/acrylic technique on canvas is required for anything larger than five feet. For smaller work, the surface, whether paper or board, is critical, as my expressive technique that can combine conte, acrylic, pastel, and pencil in one picture needs a robust working surface. I often work over discarded prints, allowing some of the original colors to show through, creating a palimpsest, in other words.

EQ: When beginning a new composition, what does your preparation involve?

Do you rely on photographs, sketches, or purely memory and imagination to translate the initial dynamic observation to your work?

AB: Beginning a new picture. Over the years, I have completed many commissions which impose their own constraints, scale, relative realism, the colors of jockeys’ silks, frame, etc. For all other work, I resort to my comprehensive art library, myriad working drawings, and photographs. There aren’t a lot of horses in Glasgow City to work directly from!

HORSES ON PUBLIC LANDS There are many options for your horses to live on public lands.

I

t is becoming increasingly difficult to house our horses, particularly in or near urban areas.

In many of these places, horse boarding facilities on public lands are playing an increasingly important role in providing accessible homes for horses.

Public lands cover about a third—600 million acres—of the 2.3 billion-acre land area of the United States. Public lands are regularly used to house private property and privately owned animals.

Private homes within national parks, boats docked at marinas within parks and protected areas, and cattle grazed on public ranges are all examples of long-term, fee-for-service usage of public lands for private, recreational purposes.

As boarding options diminish, public lands are an increasingly important part of the equestrian landscape. Public lands are home to lesson programs, trail facilities, competition venues, and boarding and stabling facilities.

While little data is available on a national level, reports of lost boarding facilities abound. In the Washington, DC area, for example, an informal survey conducted by a group of concerned horse owners revealed that many boarding facilities had closed in the region despite the strong equestrian tradition of the area. However, stables on public lands have remained viable by incorporating horses into parks and other permanently protected lands.

Washington, DC’s, Rock Creek Stables is home to 50 horses. The facility operates on National Park Service Property and is run through a contractor 10 0 | E Q UE S T R I A N L I V IN G | WI N TER | 2026

hired by the Park Service. The facility is tucked into the northwest corner of Rock Creek Park, a national park that runs the length of the city.

Rock Creek Stables offers boarding, riding lessons, and host a therapeutic riding programs. It is nestled in a network of shared-use trails that host horses, cyclists, and pedestrians, and has indoor and outdoor arenas. Rock Creek has a five-year waiting list for boarding and has a busy lesson program that runs 10 hours a day, six days per week.

A trail network connects it to Maryland’s Meadowbrook Stables, owned by the National Capital Area Park District. Run by a contractor, Meadowbrook offers a lesson program, a show series and boarding to students actively engaged in their training program.

In nearby Lorton, Virginia, the Bureau of Land Management‘s Meadowood Special Recreation Area is home to an equestrian facility. About 40 acres of the 800-acre protected area are leased to a contractor who operates a boarding facility, lesson program, and provides overall property management services for the barn, indoor and outdoor arenas, pastures, and fencing, hay

storage, and other buildings, including a bank barn.

Across the continent in the San Francisco region, Marin Stables and Trails in Marin County, California, maintains a boarding facility for 50 horses on property owned by the Marin Municipal Water District. The facility is managed through a contractor who works in concert with a nonprofit focused on preserving the historic property.

In Illinois, the Decatur Park District’s Big Creek Riding Center offers horse boarding, indoor and outdoor show facilities, and wooded riding trails. The facility also offers riding lessons and summer equestrian camps.

Across the United States, many military bases offer boarding and stabling to active duty and retired military members and their families, as well as civilian employees and defense contractors working in or near their bases.

Boarding on military facilities usually requires a degree of self-care, but costs are typically far below market rates for board. Additionally, stables on military bases are noted for their strong sense of community and cooperative, familyoriented ethic.

Public lands are a big part of our equestrian landscape. As development pressures continue to build, they will become still more important to the horse community and the equine industry.

Inadequate airflow allows moisture and ammonia from urine to accumulate, fostering respiratory diseases, mold, and harmful gases. Best practices include incorporating ridge vents, cupolas, eave vents, and Dutch doors for passive air flow, and avoiding low ceilings that restrict air movement or pose a risk of injury.

Small or poorly designed stalls can increase the risk of injury, stress, and behavioral problems. The industry standard for luxury barns is a minimum of 12-by12-foot stalls, with solid walls to prevent biting and kicking injuries, and nonslip, cushioned flooring for joint health and traction. Aisleways should be at least 12 feet wide to allow two horses to pass safely.

NEGLECTING STORAGE NEEDS

A well-designed barn is organized and clutter-free.

Adequate, integrated storage for hay, feed, tack, tools, shavings, and blankets is vital. Proper storage streamlines routines and protects valuable assets from pests, moisture, and theft. Dedicated, climate-controlled tack rooms are essential.

Lighting affects safety and health. Dimly lit barns can spook horses and hinder daily tasks, while harsh light can cause stress. Optimal design maximizes natural light with skylights, clerestory windows, and transoms, supplemented by color-balanced, adjustable LED fixtures. Lighting should be zoned by area and switches should be conveniently located.

“Your professor’s generous.”

The boy lifted the camera. “Can I take a picture?”

“Do what you want.”

The shutter clicked three times. Miles turned toward the sound, steady. The boy frowned at the screen.

“Sir, this is weird,” he said. “Every frame came out… blank.”

Miles smiled faintly. “Maybe it’s the light.”

“There’s light,” the boy insisted.

“Plenty.”

“Then maybe it’s me,” Miles said.

He walked past him, touching the mare’s neck. “You can send me the files if you want.”

“I will,” the boy said, though he never did.

That night, Vera found the trophy room empty. All the cups were gone.

She followed footprints through the snow down to the small lake behind the estate. He stood there, holding a bag.

“What are you doing?” she called out.

“Paying off a debt.”

“To who?”

“To myself, maybe.”

He dropped the bag into the frozen water. The ice cracked a little, swallowing the weight. She stepped closer.

“You didn’t need to go and do that.”

He shifted his shoulder, not rude, just soft. “They were never mine.”

“You still earned some of them.”

“Maybe. Doesn’t matter which.”

“Do you ever miss the color?” she said.

He shifted his head.

“Sometimes it comes back, but not through my eyes.

It’s in the sound. Every step, every breath... it paints something.

the calls. The buyers wanted it for retreats, not horses. She asked where he would go, and he said, “Somewhere flat.”

He ended up renting a small cabin near Saratoga. The place came with a barn, empty except for dust. He spent mornings walking inside it, pacing like it was still full of horses. The rhythm echoed under the wooden beams.

When the snow returned that winter, he began recording the sound of his steps, the breathing of the wind, the hollow creak of doors. He called it his “new match.”

One day a letter came, forwarded from the old address. It was from Dalton.

Sorry about what happened. Never wanted it coming your way. You were the clean one, Miles. You always were.

At the bottom, a short line: You should see the sky out here, it’s all blue.

He read it twice before realizing his fingers were tracing each letter, slow, like reading with skin. The paper held a faint smell of salt and oil, the kind used on old horse gear.

He put it down on the wooden table and stayed quiet, ears tuned to the wind pressing on the barn. The sound swelled, dropped, kept time... like breathing in

the dark. He closed his eyes.

Four weeks later, Vera showed up.

Found him outside, on the ground, a small recorder in his grip.

“What’s that?” she said.

“Snow sounds,” he said. “I’m building an archive. Each storm has a different rhythm. You can tell where you are if you listen long enough.”

She smiled, unsure. “And then what?”

“Not sure,” he said quiet. “Maybe I’ll ride again. Not on a horse. On this.” He lifted the recorder slightly.

Air settled between them, broken only by wind hum and far-off tires on pavement. She stayed standing, not certain if he noticed her at all.

“Do you ever miss the color?” she finally said.

He shifted his head. “Sometimes it comes back, but not through my eyes. It’s in the sound. Every step, every breath... it paints something. You wouldn’t believe it, Vera.”

She studied him. His face stayed still, almost quiet.

“Maybe that’s your new field,” she said.

He smiled. “Maybe.”

The horse in the barn let out a single cry, a low sound that mixed with the wind. Miles pressed record again, eyes closed, hand steady.

What came through the speaker wasn’t snow or wind or wood. It played something deeper. Thick. Almost like hands clapping. He waited, trying to catch it.

Then he knew. His heart.

He let it play.

And for the first time since the fall, he felt color again.

MEET REMI The RESCUED CHIHUAHUA puppy is already known as the Mayor of Malvern.

Jill Apfelbaum, founder of Malvern Saddlery in Malvern, Pennsylvania, has built a boutique where equestrian tradition meets modern luxury. A lifelong rider across hunters, jumpers, and now dressage, she merges her fashion sense with riding expertise to select performance wear, well-crafted tack, and crossover apparel suited to the ring or town. Her love of horses and keen attention to detail ensure a reliable and enjoyable shopping experience.

I

don’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t have a dog as a kid growing up, or, certainly, in my adult life. I’ve always had either Jack Russells or corgis, and they’ve all been wonderful. So, never until the past couple of years— after losing my last corgi three years ago—had I been without a dog. That is, until I found my little Remi.

Finding Remi was what I call my “running with scissors” moment. After I lost my corgi, I told myself that at this stage of my life, three years in, I probably shouldn’t take on a new dog. I missed having one terribly, but I thought fostering would be a gentler approach and require a little less of a commitment. I thought it might be a better way to go.

A year or two passed, and one of my dear friends, Tami, who has the farm where I keep my horse, kept saying, “You need to get a dog.” And I kept insisting I didn’t—or at least I thought I didn’t.

Tami is close friends with the woman who runs Viola Valley Dogs, a rescue in Tennessee, and every summer she spends a week there helping out. Two days before she left, she showed up in the barn

with a photo and said, “Look at these puppies.” There were three adorable faces I couldn’t stop staring at. Once Tami was in Tennessee, more photos arrived. Then videos. Then phone calls. She wore me down. She kept saying, “I know your lifestyle. I know how you live. I’m telling you, this is a special puppy.”

The next thing I knew, little Remi was flying first class from Tennessee to my house. And that was my “running with scissors” moment in full. When he arrived, I was shaking, wondering what on earth I had done. But the second I saw him, that was it. He was only 7 weeks old—just a bit young to leave his mom—but he was healthy, brighteyed, and full of life. I’ve had him for a few months now, and he is absolutely thriving.

He has already earned the title Mayor of Malvern. He has a huge personality

and is completely adorable. When we walk from the parking lot to the saddlery, where he reports daily for his retail duties, he has this jaunty little gait that makes people laugh. His head is high, his tail moves a million miles a minute, and he struts right down to the store. Cars stop, horns honk, and people call out his name. I’m not exaggerating when I say he could win the hack in the small pony division.

Naturally, customers now come in to play with Remi as much as they shop.

It’s been wonderful having a dog in the store again.

Remi adores other dogs. At the farm, he’s just one of the pack. He runs with the Rottweiler and a Chihuahua, and the three of them carry on like crazy.

When the horses are out, he hangs in the tack room, and when the dogs all get to run, he’s right there with them.

People have been so generous, bringing him treats, toys, and surprises. He has a little teepee hideaway in the store, and every time I fit boots, he knows there will be a cardboard insert. He hunts it like it’s a squirrel, grabs it, and races it back to his teepee. One afternoon, after what must have been a very good boot-sale day, there were seven of them tucked inside.

And here’s a funny moment that really sums up this adventure: I made an appointment with the veterinarian I’d used for years with my other dogs, though I hadn’t seen him since I’d been dogless. He walked in, looked at me, looked at Remi, and said, “Well…I don’t know how to tell you this, but that is not a corgi!”
