Muscle up for 10th year

Arm Wrestling Tournament North Stage Saturday, Aug. 14 Weigh-in 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Competition begins 3:00 p.m.

It’s time to muscle up once again because the Wyoming State Fair arm wrestling competition is back for its 10th year.

There are multiple weight classes for both men and women in both right- and left-arm divisions. The cost to enter the competition is $20 per class, per arm.

The first 50 entries will receive a free T-shirt and awards will be given to the top three finishers in each class. It is a double elimination competition.

Contestants may weigh in from noon to 2 p.m., with the competition starting at 3 p.m. at the North Stage. For more information, contact the Wyoming State Fair office at 307-358-2398 or USA arm wrestling at 406254-7385.

Artists highlighted in Douglas

The Douglas Invitational Art Show will continue for the 2010 Wyoming State Fair at the Wyoming Pioneer Museum, with events running from Aug. 13-15.

Now in its 19th year, the art show was launched to bring attention to the museum and bring artists to town. For 2010 there are 25 artists involved.

The show will begin Aug. 13 with an opening reception that evening, which will feature a silent auction, hors d’ oeuvres and cocktails, costing $25 per ticket. Call the Wyoming Pioneer Museum for reservations at 307-358-9288.

The art show will continue the following day, Saturday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The traditional “Quick Draw” will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. At the Quick Draw, artists will have an hour to produce a piece of art to be auctioned at the sale that immediately follows at 4 p.m., accompanied by a wine and cheese reception.

Crabtree Carnival to entertain again in 2010

Crabtree Carnival will once again provide the thrills of the Wyoming State Fair Carnival.

Returning for its 10th year at the Wyoming State Fair, the carnival will provide rides for every type of ride enthusiast. Whether you prefer the highspeed thrills or opt for the more family friendly rides, be sure to look around the Carnival to find your excitement.

The schedule for the carnival differs every day and different “specials” will be offered throughout the week. Be sure to look at what is coming up on the day you plan to attend. Wednesday, August 18 is Wristband Youth Day. Youth can purchase a “Ride All You Want” wristband for only $15 a person. The carnival also offers a “Mega Pass” which allows riders to “Ride All You Want” every day.

The “Mega Pass” is valid beginning Saturday, Aug. 14 at 5:00 p.m. and will last through Saturday, Aug.

21. There are limited quantities so be sure to purchase your “Mega Pass” early! Once the limited quantities are gone, no more will be available. “Mega Passes” can be purchased for $55 per person through Aug. 9th. After Aug. 9th, the price will increase to $60.

The cost of the “Mega Pass” includes Gate Admission but does not include admission to the Power Ride or the Bungee Jump.

Deafening crashes, skyward fireballs, plumes of smoke, squealing tires, flying mud, cheering crowds, crunching metal and spectacular competition are just a few of the joys awaiting attendees at the Wyoming State Fair’s Demolition Derby.

The smash-fest kicks off Saturday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Grandstand Arena. Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for kids 12 and under.

The event, organized by the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department, usually features around six heats and more than 30 cars, bashing, denting and revving their way in hopes of victory.

Spectators should plan to arrive early to claim their seats, as this is one of the fair’s most popular events.

A Powder Puff competition will be held if there are at least 10 entries.

Demolition drivers have a chance to win $500 to $3,000 (depending on the number of cars) in prize money.

Sheep, stock dogs return to compete at fair

The WSF Sheep Dog and Stock Dog Cattle Trials are back again this year.

The Sheep Dog Arena Trial is open to any breed of dog and will be held in the Grandstand Arena Aug. 14 at 9 a.m.

Although the Wyoming State Fair Sheep Dog Arena Trial is open to dogs of any breed and to any handler, the competition is generally dominated by the Border collie, a mediumsized, usually black-and-white dog renowned for its intelligence, agility, hard work and innate skills when working livestock.

Each handler/dog team gets one run per entry, with a tentative five-minute time limit per run. The WSF will present a buckle to the champion sheep dog team, while Bryce and Barbara Reece of Casper will award a specially designed jacket to the champion and reserve entries.

The Wyoming Invitational Stock Dog Cattle Trial, coordinated by Juan Reyes of Wheatland and in cooperation with the Wyoming Stock Dog Association, will be held Aug. 15 at 9:30 a.m. The trial is open to qualifiers from Wyoming trials held throughout the summer. Each dog will take two runs and accumulate points to determine the winner.

The dogs qualify for the trial at state fair after competing in a series of trials in Rock Springs, Saratoga, Rawlins and Torrington throughout the summer.

a buckle to the top stock dog in memory of Georgene LeBar, while the WSF will present ribbons to the top 10 dogs.

The main difference between cattle dogs and sheep dogs is that cattle dogs are naturally more aggressive and have a little more “bite” to them than sheep dogs. In a sheep dog competition the dogs aren’t allowed to nip the sheep, while a small correction is sometimes needed when dogs are working cattle, which are more bold and can be more headstrong.

Kids comprise annual parade at State Fair

The 2010 Wyoming Barnyard Mardi Gras Kidz and Karz parade will begin this year at 10 a.m. on Aug. 14.

Line up begins at 9:30 a.m. The parade will begin at the County Courthouse, located at the corner of Center and Fifth Street, and will progress down Center Street to 2nd Street, finishing at the fire station.

After the parade, popsicles will be provided for participants while the awards are handed out. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the first five places in each category. The parade is open to children of all ages.

2010 State Fair hosts first ranch rodeo finals

This year’s Wyoming State Fair ranch rodeo competition will include heightened stakes, as the State Fair will now be the state finals for ranch rodeos held in the Cowboy State that have chosen to be affiliated.

In addition, the State Fair has partnered with the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) in Billings, Mont. and will send the top two Wyoming ranch rodeo teams to the finals in Montana in October 2010.

“I’ve wanted to put together a regional finals for a while, but didn’t have the vehicle to get it done,” says ranch rodeo finals coordinator Larry Bentley of Thermopolis. “I was up at the NILE last fall and talked to them about it a little bit, and we got to talking and this thing fell together last spring. One day it all came together.”

Wyoming State Fair Director James Goodrich is also involved in putting the event together, and he explains that those interested need to affiliate with the State Fair and adhere to a uniform set of guidelines to ensure consistency through the qualifying process.

Goodrich explains there are five events that will be held at the state finals – the same five held at the NILE finals – and that local ranch rodeos in the state need to include at least three of them in their competitions. The five events from which to choose are ranch bronc riding, wild cow milking, team trailering, team doctoring and team branding.

given to the reserve team, with cash awards going down through fourth place,” explains Goodrich, adding there will also be Top Hand and Top Horse awards.

“I think this is an up and coming thing,” adds Bentley, speaking of local-level ranch rodeos. “Even though people love to go see professional cowboys compete in PRCA rodeos, we don’t have many of those rodeos because we don’t have the purses for the big names. Ranch rodeo has local teams, and now they have a chance to go to a finals, and our top two teams in the state get to go compete in Montana at the NILE, and to me that’s pretty exciting.”

Tickets for the ranch rodeo finals are $5 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under.

A Grandstand Arena event ticket package is available through the Wyoming State Fair Office for $30. A $10 discount if tickets are purchased separately.

From showmanship to goat tying, a variety of opportunities exist for youth to show off their horses at the 2010 Wyoming State Fair.

The 2010 Youth Horse Show at the Wyoming State Fair will kick off Monday, Aug. 16 with the showmanship divisions, where judging will be on the basis of the exhibitor’s ability to present their animal for judging.

Showmanship classes test the movement and positioning of the animal by the exhibitor, and condition and cleanliness of the animal as it relates to being ready for show. Mannerisms and conduct of the showman are also included in the judge’s evaluation.

The showmanship divisions, competing in the grass arena, will include competitors from FFA, 4-H Senior Member, 4-H Intermediate Member and 4-H Junior Member.

The Youth Horse Show halter classes will include a variety of breeds, among them Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Morgans, Quarter Horses and ponies. Many organizations, clubs and businesses around the state donate halter horse awards.

Both English and Western classes will be included in the Youth Performance classes, from English Hunter Hack to Ranch Sorting and Goat Tying.

Little cowboys and little bulls won’t equal a shortage of action at the Wyoming State Fair on Monday, Aug 16. The event is in its fourth year at the fair and over 20 kids are expected to compete.

The speeding pint-size horses and chuckwagons are always a crowd pleaser and will follow the miniature bull riding. in the Grandstand Arena.

Kids entered in the bull riding are divided into junior and senior divisions based on age. They acquire points at different rodeos throughout the summer that host the event. At the end of the season a championship finals is held for the top competitors in each division.

“Kids usually start on calves then go to steers prior to riding full-size bulls. The miniature bulls buck more like a full size bull than a steer. They typically stand better and don’t hurt the kids in the chute and they have more well-defined shoulders, which makes them better to ride,” explains Tiny Twisters owner Jenny Klein. Her family and partners put on the event and provide the small-scale bucking stock.

“Really, pound for pound the bulls and kids are matched up well. This is designed for that in between age just before high school when kids aren’t quite ready to be matched up with big bulls,” explains Klein.

Watching a small-scale version of the alwayspopular bull-riding event is only enhanced by the kids determination and drive and well worth taking in while at the fair.

Ranch horses compete through obstacles, cow work Ranch horse competitions challenge the everyday ranch skills of the horse and rider teams who come to Douglas to compete each year.

Aspects of the ranch horse competition include trail, reining and cow handling and roping elements. The event is double-judged, with a six-minute time limit on the open classes; all other divisions have a five-minute time limit.

A few of the obstacles the teams will face are walking across a bridge, picking up feet, loading in a trailer and backing out horse out, picking up a rope and dragging an obstacle15 feet and back.

The horses will also be required to back 15 feet and lope, stop and rollback in both directions.

In all classes the teams will be required to complete some level of cattle work. In the youth division they’ll box a cow at either end of the arena, men’s and ladies’ ranchers will turn the cow in each direction down the fence and in open classes the rider will use one loop to rope the cow.

When a contestant is holding a cow at the end of the arena, maximum credit will be

given to the horse that is obviously watching a cow and making counter moves to hold the cow at the end of the arena with the help of the rider. The more a horse is trying to do so on his own, the more credit he should receive.

“The quality of the horses and the competitors gets better every year,” says Wyoming State Fair Ranch Horse Competition Superintendent Tim Ettlemen, who lives near Longmont, Colo. and used to compete in the event at Douglas. “The most challenging aspect is the cow work and the roping. That’s the most exciting part of it. That’s the part a ranch horse should be able to do.”

The competition uses fresh cows that are good to work, and the cow work is changed a little every year.

Although the level of competition continues to rise, Ettleman says the environment remains relaxed and fun. “We want everyone to have a good time and an enjoyable day,” he says.

Wyoming hay shows off at State Fair The 2010 Premier Wyoming Hay Show will showcase Wyoming’s best hay from the 2009 and 2010 growing seasons.

Producers from around the state will enter their hay in one of four classes: alfalfa hay, mixed hay, grass hay and hay cubes.

The top hay from Wyoming’s hay show will be used to promote the state’s hay industry, travelling east to the World Dairy Expo’s Forage Superbowl in Madison, Wisc. this fall. In addition, another forage contest in California was held for the first time in February 2010 and was won by a Wyoming entry from Dave Hinman of Wheatland. Ervin Gara of Torrington also entered and took fourth.

“I’d like to let producers know that if they enter the Wyoming state hay show, those samples are automatically taken to Madison, Wisc., and there’s a lot of interest there in Wyoming hay,” says Wyoming Business Council Forage Program Manager Donn Randall. “People come into our area, smell the hay and say, ‘Oh, this is what good hay is supposed to look and smell like.’”

In addition to U.S. markets for Wyoming hay, Randall is also working with a company known as ACX out of California to ship hay overseas. “There will be some opportunity for Lincoln and Fremont County producers to export hay to the United Arab Emirates,” says Randall. “There’s a market there, and China is starting to open up, and there may even be some Japanese markets for U.S. hay.”

The cost for hay producers to enter the hay show at the State Fair is $11.25, which covers forage testing at the lab. Samples must be sent to the lab by Aug. 4 and they’re due at the State Fair Monday, Aug. 16.

Hay show judging at the State Fair will take place Aug. 17. The University of Wyoming’s Extension Forage Specialist Anowar Islam will judge the show for the second time this year.

Mile High Ranch in Riverton will award a plaque to the Champion Alfalfa Hay and Champion Mixed Hay exhibitors, while the Wyoming Business Council’s Agribusiness Division will present a belt buckle for the Alan M. Gray Award to the Best of Show hay exhibitor. Pepsi will present a belt buckle to the Premier Hay Exhibitor.

The four-person teams attempt (successfully, often enough) to get their hands on the slippery, squealing pigs as they circle a pit of bentonite mud, then deposit the curlytailed rascals in a 55-gallon barrel of sawdust butt-first, all within one minute.

The teams are divided into groups ranging from juniors to adults to all-female. Entry fees are $50 per team by Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. or $65 for a late entry.

Champions from each county are encouraged to participate.

Conference, picnic highlight Wyo agriculture

Again this year the Wyoming Livestock Roundup and Double S Feeders of Wheatland will partner for the 2010 Cattlemen’s Conference, held annually at the State Fair.

This year’s conference will be held at the Best Western in Douglas and will begin at 1 p.m. Topics to be addressed will include beef market competition and antitrusts, with Omaha, Neb. attorney David Domina and Betsy Butler of the Grain Inspection Packers and Stockyards Administration confirmed as speakers.

“Domina was the lead lawyer for the picket versus IBP in the Tyson fresh meats trial in 2004, when the jury found that Tyson had manipulated the market,” says Randy Stevenson of Double S Feeders, noting that Domina will also be part of the expert witness panel for the Department of Justice’s antitrust workshop in Fort Collins, Colo. in August. “He’s also general counsel for the Organization for Competitive Markets.”

Stevenson says Butler will speak on the new rules issued with regard to Packers and Stockyards, and the upcoming antitrust workshop in Fort Collins, In addition to those confirmed speakers, Rep. Cynthia Lummis is expected to speak as well, and Charlie McVean of McVean Trading out of Memphis, Tenn. has been invited.

“McVean’s presentation makes you really glad to be a cowboy,” says Stevenson. “He told me himself that we’re on an unsustainable path, as far as being able to maintain on feed numbers with cowherd we have. That bodes bullishly

Following the Cattlemen’s Conference, at 5:30 p.m. the Wyoming Livestock Roundup, Farm Credit Services of America and EnCana Oil and Gas will host the annual Agriculture Hall of Fame Picnic at Riverside Park in Douglas, just north of the fairgrounds.

At the picnic the Roundup will induct brothers Don and Peto Meike of Kaycee and Grant Stumbough of Wheatland into the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame, honoring and recognizing their outstanding contributions to Wyoming’s ag industry.

Each year, readers of the Roundup nominate the individuals for the Hall of Fame, who are then chosen by a panel of three judges. Members of Wyoming’s Congressional delegation will be on hand to recognize the 2010 inductees.

Wyoming Agriculture in the Classroom will recognize their 2010 Educator of the Year, Kathy Tatman of Lingle.

Susan Thomas, wife of the late Senator Craig Thomas, will present the Craig and Susan Thomas Foundation Leadership Award.

Grant Stumbough joins the Wyoming Ag Hall of Fame in 2010 “When choosing whom to nominate for such an esteemed group, I thought quite a bit about what Grant represents – how he helps agriculture and the people in agriculture, how he protects what we have and how he presents Wyoming to others,” writes southeast Wyoming rancher Larry Cundall of Wheatland native Grant Stumbough in his letter to the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame selection committee. “I believe he gets an ‘A’ grade in all of these categories.”

Stumbough was raised on a ranch near Wheatland, and he says his dad still runs cattle on the family ranch. After spending time around Wyoming working for state government, he says it was good to return home to Wheatland as the Southeast Wyoming RC&D Coordinator.

“Grant is a product of a rural ranch family, completing his share of early years in a country school, learning the country values that have served him well in his years in government service,” continues Cundall.

The nomination form for Stumbough reads, “Grant is a proven leader in helping people over his past 30-plus years of public service.”

“Ag has always been near and dear to my heart,” says Stumbough, adding he likes working with producers and wide-open spaces. “I’ve always respected those who feed and clothe the world. It’s a noble profession.”

Throughout his career Stumbough has been involved in many projects and causes, but he says his number one is coordinated resource management, or CRMs. “My good friend Dennis Sun got me started on that years ago, and to me it made so much sense, especially on public lands, to make sure we have all the stakeholders working together,” says Stumbough. “We really did a good job with that, and to set goals as a group and make assignments and action plans and see good things happen on the land was one of the most gratifying things I’ve ever done.”

He says equally as satisfied is his current project – landowner associations and wind energy development.

“I like people processes, because, to me, that’s when you make things happen,” he notes, speaking of how the ag industry in southeast Wyoming has unified to work toward one goal – wind energy development – that’s good for the resource and can assist independence from foreign oil. “We’ve got neighbors working with neighbors to put together requests for proposals and using collective bargaining to help each other with a community-based payment.”

“Grant Stumbough has helped more farmers and ranchers in the state of Wyoming in the last few years utilize their resources that anyone else,” write Rocky and Nancy Foy in a letter of support for Stumbough. “He is on the leading edge of the 34

wind farms, and he has been a voice for the wind farms in the southeastern part of the state and for the western part of the United States.”

While wind energy takes 90 percent of his current focus, Stumbough’s new project is the Pathway to Water Quality on the Wyoming State Fairgrounds.

“It’s a cool project, because we have a lot of entities involved, coming together in the name of doing what we can to educate and inform livestock producers and provide them with new technologies to protect water quality,” he says.

Shawnee area rancher Terry Henderson, who’s involved in a wind association, says, “Like those involved in production agriculture, Grant does not know the meaning of a 40-hour work week. He gives of his time far beyond his ‘official’ work day for the rural people.”

“The work that Grant has done will not only affect ranches in the short term, but he leaves a lasting legacy for those of us working the land, regardless of the outcome of wind development in Wyoming,” continues Henderson. “Many of the communities have become closer as a result of these groups.”

“Grant takes the punch line out of the old joke, ‘I’m here from the government, and I’m here to help you,’” says Cundall. “Grant really is here to help, and he has been for a long time.”

Wheatland native Grant Stumbough has worn many hats through his natural resources career in Wyoming, the most recent of which is Southeast Wyoming RC&D Coordinator. Through the years, the common thread of his work has been working to bring people together. Meiki brothers selected for Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame Kaycee –Pete Meike and Don Meike were nominated

by Wyoming Livestock Roundup readers and selected by a panel of three to join the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2010.

Pete and Don reside on the Meike Ranch south of Kaycee, where their family has lived since 1901.

In addition to running cattle and sheep both on the ranch and on the south end of the Bighorn Mountains during the summer months, the brothers have been actively involved in a number of organizations that benefit Wyoming agriculture.

“Our grandfather came here in 1901 and homesteaded. He was one of the big instigators in the irrigation project that goes from here to Kaycee. There are over 5,000 acres under that ditch and he and a couple neighbors could see the future of irrigation in this valley,” explains Pete.

“Our granddad was very active in various things in the county as well. He was a county commissioner at one time and was always involved,” adds Don. Pete and Don have carried on the tradition of being active in the community. At one time Don served on five state boards at once and has been the Wyoming Wool Growers President and National Wool Growers President. Pete spent 42 years with the Kaycee Conservation District in addition to serving as the county Farm Bureau president.

Between the two of them, Don and Pete have served every position available in the Johnson County Cattlemen, Wool Growers and Farm Bureau in addition to a number of other local and state positions.

“Politically, Wyoming is a wonderful place to be from. If you want to know the Governor on a firstname basis, you can. I’ve known the last eight or 10 without even trying. In most instances I knew him before he was Governor. In that way, Wyoming is a wonderful, unique place.

“My dad was on the first board of the first Conservation District in Kaycee, and when he went off the board I went on. I finally retired a year ago and that’s the first time there hasn’t been a Meike on the board since it originated,” notes Pete.

In addition to their deep level of community involvement, Don and Pete continue to run the family ranch. It started with cattle and today runs both cattle and sheep.

“We also flood irrigate about 1,200 acres which is another full-time job in itself,” says Pete.

“We summer most of our livestock on the south end of the Bighorn Mountains. We trail the sheep and haul the cattle to the foot and walk them up,” explains Don. Both brothers live by their long-standing family motto, “be good neighbor,” and their newest employee was hired three years ago. Most have been with them “forever” if you ask Don and Pete, who can tell you about each family, how their kids do in school, what sports they play and how long they have been on the Meike Ranch.

For the past year Don and Pete have stayed busy 36

building a senior housing apartment building in Kaycee.

“Our aunt was a rancher here and after her husband died she eventually retired, sold the ranch and moved to Kaycee. She lived there for about 10 years, then felt she was no longer capable of taking complete care of herself so she moved to an independent senior housing building in Buffalo. She found that for the first two years she was considered the new lady,” explains Pete.

“She often asked why we couldn’t have a senior housing apartment in Kaycee so people don’t have to leave their friends and community. She left her estate to the building of such an apartment and we just had the grand opening in early July,” adds Don. The apartment includes 10 units and much of the funding came from local ranchers. “Probably 90 percent is local ranch money. Her estate took care of the architecture plans and the rest has been raised. Some banks and other individuals also helped, but the ranching community really backed this project,” says Pete.

“The Lohse family interviewed us and turned in the application. We are very appreciative of what they’ve done. We don’t really like the limelight and don’t work for it – but get it once in a while,” says Don of being selected for the Wyoming Agriculture Hall of Fame.

Don and Pete Meike live south of Kaycee on a ranch that has been in their family since 1901. Both brothers have been actively involved in a number of local, state and national organizations. Pete currently enjoys competing in sheepdog trials with Ace and other dogs he uses daily on the ranch.

Joe Diffie headlines 2010 State Fair “The Man with the Golden Voice,” according to Vern Gosdin, will perform at this year’s Wyoming State Fair and Rodeo.

Strap and hang on because this is going to get exciting. Extreme Bull Riding is back, and better than ever this year as once again the Wyoming State Fair will be an important stop on the PRCA Heartland Pro Rodeo Series.

In conjunction with the Friday and Saturday evening rodeo performances, the Extreme Bull Riding will feature Cervi Championship Rodeo stock in a special section of PRCA bull riding, to be continued the following evenings.

Thursday evening’s performance will also highlight a go-round of steer roping.

Wyoming Pioneers continue tradition, focus on youngsters

Meeting to swap historic tales and catch up with old friends during the Wyoming State Fair has become a tradition for members of the Wyoming Pioneer Association.

Dating back to July 1, 1884, the first pioneer meetings were open to people 21 or older who were residents of, or doing business in, Wyoming Territory. Meetings began to take place annually in Douglas at the Wyoming State Fair beginning in 1905. In the years prior, the men and women of the Pioneer Association played an important role in achieving statehood for Wyoming. The Wyoming Pioneer Association was incorporated on Jan. 8, 1926. Today, the Wyoming Pioneer Association is an advisory board to the Wyoming Pioneer Memorial Museum and has statewide and national membership.

This year’s Wyoming Pioneer Association meeting is at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19 at the McKibben Cafeteria on the fairgrounds.

In addition to their annual meeting, Pioneer Association members are also working to ensure youngsters have the opportunity to learn about our state’s pioneer days. Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 18, children can peek into Wyoming’s history at the cabin adjacent to the Wyoming Pioneer Museum.

and share information about wool and Wyoming agriculture. Don Duckworth of Cheyenne will set up his teepee and will don his mountain man attire. The Discovery Trunk from the Wyoming State Museum will also be on hand and is filled with replica artifacts that allow exploration into the lives of plains Indians, mountain men, Army personnel and emigrants who crossed Wyoming decades ago.

Crafts will take place throughout the week and the Converse County Cattlewomen are moving their annual stick horse races to the cabin area. “We’re excited to add to the activities available for young people at the State Fair,” says Wyoming Pioneer Association chairman Mary Enebretsen. “We hope people see all of the new activities and consider becoming a member of the Wyoming Pioneer Association.”

Mustangs compete for top honors

This year two days of the Wyoming State Fair will feature competition amongst Mustangs from around the state.

The 2010 Wyoming Mustang Day events will begin Aug. 20, running from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors will be treated to halter classes, a trail course, Western equitation for all ages and a demonstration clinic to follow, conducted by Mantle Wild Horses and the Wyoming Honor Farm.

Saturday, Aug. 21 the events stretch from 2 to 5 p.m., with a yearling showcase open for anyone who adopted a 2009 yearling mustang. Competitors may show their two-year-olds in-hand or under saddle. Each competitor will be given five minutes each to complete their routine. An overall award will be given to the most improved two-year-old.

A competition for trainers of Mustangs will also take place Saturday. The horses will be available for adoption following the event. The wild horse adoption will begin at 4:30 p.m. Horses started under saddle, as well as halter started yearlings will be available for adoption.

The Bureau of Land Management and the National Wild Horse and Burro Program organize all Mustang events.

“He was a really good sheep but didn’t really come together until county and state fair, which worked out well.”

Competitors in the Youth Lamb show come from every county in the state and are eligible to show at the State Fair based on their performance at the county level.

Each county champion also competes in a Champion of Champions class, which provides the opportunity to see the top lamb from every county in the show ring at the same time.

Brody will compete in the Junior Lamb Show again this year. “I’m showing two sheep this year. I really like learning skills about how to care for my projects and meeting new friends at the State Fair,” he says.

Visit the Events Tent on the fairgrounds Saturday, Aug. 21 to shop the eighth annual Wyoming Farmers’ Market.

This year’s market will feature two dozen vendors, bringing with them wheat products, pancake mixes, jams, jellies, sauces and ketchup, as well as home-baked goods, produce, cookies, house plants, perennial flowers, raw raspberries and raspberry products, honey products and all natural bath and body products.

Event organizer Kim Porter of the Wyoming Business Council says the Wyoming First table will also be featured. It also contains a variety of jams, jellies and sauces.

In addition to the farmers’ market, the Wyoming Production Pavilion will be open all week, featuring some of the same food products that will be sold at the Wyoming First table at farmers’ market. The pavilion will also feature many of its traditionally offered items, all made in Wyoming, such as metal decor, home decoration, holiday decorations, books and food.

As of mid-July, Porter says she hopes to have a corn vendor in the farmers’ market as well as some wool products and yarn.

“This year we’re trying to ramp it up and get more local people attending the farmers market. It’ll be a great time,” says Porter, noting that the market will include as much fresh produce as possible.

“For people attending the Wyoming State Fair Farmers’ Market, it’s an awesome opportunity to take advantage of the availability of local, fresh food,” she adds.

There’s nothing like lining the streets of Douglas for the annual Wyoming State Fair Parade.

Passing under the canopies of Fourth Street, then through historic downtown will be the Douglas Lions Club State Fair Parade at 10 a.m. Aug. 21.

Check-in will be at 9 a.m. at Fifth and Hamilton streets, with the march turning the corner onto Fourth Street at 10 a.m.

The theme will be “Wyoming Barnyard Mardi Gras” so get into the Creole spirit with some southern-style celebration in a truly Western city.

Prizes are offered, including $200 for Best in Parade. Prizes are also given in youth categories: floats, equestrian, entertainment

and high school/college bands. Adult awards will be given in: service/independent, equestrian, wagons, entertainment, commercial and collector vehicles. To be considered, participants in the adult category must be at least 20 years old and drive the parade route under their own power.

Rodeo rides again with evening performances Every event has its mainstays, and one event during the Wyoming State Fair is such a staple that it makes its way right into the fair’s very name. That’s right, it’s rodeo time again at the State Fair!

This year’s PRCA rodeo will be at 7 p.m., Aug. 20-21 in the Grandstand Arena. Anchoring the state fair festivities, both performances of the rodeo provide actionpacked entertainment from some of the best rodeo cowboys and cowgirls.

Bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie down roping, steer wrestling, steer roping and barrel racing will round out each go as contestants vie for the title and the purse.

With added bonuses like mutton bustin’ and the crowning of Miss Rodeo Wyoming, each night will feature thrills, spills and champion moments sure not to disappoint.

Erin Heffron – Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2010 Erin Heffron hails from the beautiful town of Alta and is a senior at the University of Wyoming majoring in Kinesiology and minoring in Spanish.

She has plans to continue her education by going to physical therapy school. Erin is also a member of the UW cross country and track teams, where she competes for the Cowgirls in long distance events and the mile is her favorite.

In the classroom, Erin has earned All-Conference Academic honors for each semester at the University of Wyoming. Throughout her career as an athlete, Erin learned the value of hard work, dedication, respect and she believes that having a positive attitude is the first step of achieving goals.

As a youngster, Erin was very active in 4-H, raising pigs and lambs and competing in horse 4-H. Once in high school she competed in high school rodeo and ran cross country and track.

Erin is honored to represent the Cowboy State for the year of 2010. She embraces the opportunity to share her platform, “Cowboy Ways,” in which

she teaches the ethics by which cowboys live.

Some examples of the 10 principles are, “Live each day with courage” or “Talk less, say more.”

Erin will travel to schools promoting her platform and working to preserve the Western way of life. “The Code of the West, and the values that cowboys hold is something that anyone can use to live their life. It’s the simple concept of taking ten basic principles to life and applying them to everyday scenarios,” she says.

As Miss Rodeo Wyoming, Erin has the opportunity to travel across the country representing the Cowboy State. She will travel about 40,000 miles in her Dodge trucks, sponsored by Fremont Motors in Rock Springs, and will compete at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant this December.

“I’ve really had been having a ball and representing our state as Miss Rodeo Wyoming is a dream come true. My favorite part is meeting all of the incredible people,” she says of her reign to date.

Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2011 contestants compete in Douglas

The annual Miss Rodeo Wyoming Pageant will be held in Douglas Aug. 17-21. This pageant, which challenges girls in the areas of horsemanship, appearance and personality, is held in conjunction with the Wyoming State Fair.

The crowning of 2011 Miss Rodeo Wyoming will be during the Saturday rodeo performance.

This year the Miss Rodeo Wyoming Pageant is celebrating 56 years of Western tradition with eight young women from across Wyoming competing for the coveted jade crown.

Alta native Erin Heffron, Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2010, will pass down her crown at the conclusion of the pageant. However, this pageant is not the end of her reign. Heffron will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. in December during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to vie for the coveted title of Miss Rodeo America.

Brittany Richards Miss Butch Cassidy Days 2010 The Snowy Range Mountains are the backdrop for the life story of Brittany Richards, Miss Butch Cassidy Days 2010. Growing up in the golden prairie grass and snow white hills, Brittany found herself experiencing Wyoming’s true beauty through its landscape and history.

Brittany has been sitting in a saddle from a young age. The dream and desire of being Miss Rodeo Wyoming has never been far from her heart. In addition to devoting numerous hours to preparing for this competition, she visits elementary schools teaching her horse safety program, T.A.C.K., and serving as a volunteer during many community events. She recently graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in Business Administration. While enrolled at the university she was active in Alpha Kappa Psi, a professional business honorary and participated in the video “Code of the West: Alive and Well in Wyoming.”

Being able to represent the Wyoming Territorial Park Historic Association, Wyoming’s history, and the sport of rodeo has been an absolute honor for Brittany. She appreciates the ideals of this land, and lives as strong as the wind blows. She strives to do her best and experiences life with a passion that extends to everyone she meets.

Les Brown once said, “If you take responsibility for yourself you will develop a hunger to accomplish your dreams.” Brittany has worked hard toward making her dream of being Miss Rodeo Wyoming come true, and she wants to thank everyone who ever believed in her and encouraged her to never give up.

Chrissy Wilmetti Sweetwater County Rodeo Queen 2010 Chrissy Wilmetti grew up on a guest ranch in the beautiful Wind River Mountains along the shores of the Sweetwater River. Being raised on her family’s ranch taught Chrissy the values of the cowboy and gave her a great appreciation and love for the western way of life. She learned from a young age the value of a hard day’s work and what it truly means to be a cowgirl through helping her parents and grandparents on the ranch.

When not on the ranch, Chrissy lives in Rock Springs where she participated in the Sweetwater County 4-H program for 12 years. Her projects included art, sewing, wildlife management, fishing and showing dogs and horses. In her high school days, Chrissy played varsity tennis, ran distance track, played guitar, and was highly involved in art. Chrissy was selected to paint a senior mural for her graduating class at Rock Springs High School and participated in 60

the Wyoming State Art Symposium.

Chrissy received an associate’s degree in art from Western Wyoming Community College. At WWCC, Chrissy was a cheerleader and involved in several art shows. Chrissy is currently a senior at the University of Wyoming majoring in art education. At the University of Wyoming Chrissy participates in intramural sports, rock climbing competitions, art shows, Block and Bridle club and is part of the University of Wyoming horse judging team. She hopes to continue her education to become a high school art teacher.

Desiree Bridges Miss Teton County Fair & Rodeo 2010 Desiree is not a Wyoming cowgirl by birth, but by choice.

Born a California girl and raised between there and Venezuela, she grew up with her dad’s tales of riding bulls with Gary Leffew and her mother’s stories of childhood trips to Jackson. Her heart belonged to the horses and Wyoming.

At age nine, her dream came true and she moved to Jackson with her mom and brother. From Horse Warriors to working for Terry and Randy at the Puzzleface Ranch, the wonderful people of Teton County pointed Desiree toward her dream. Finally, she had horses of her own, Lil Jet and Fancy Pants. She also gained a stepfather who ropes and loves horses as much as she does. Along the way, Desiree found time to participate in other activities. She excelled in drama, began utilizing her bilingual gift in assorted jobs, and stood out in her studies. Desiree also competed in alpine ski racing and was proud to be named the 2009 High School AllState Girls Champion.

Desiree is now a sophomore at the University of Wyoming where she competes on the Equestrian Team in Western riding. Her focus now is on representing Teton County in a way that will demonstrate her love and pride for her home and validate the faith so many have put in her hands. As Miss Teton County Fair and Rodeo, Desiree hopes to be a positive role model for children, as she follows the motto, “When odds are one in a million, be that one!”

Ashlee Estel

Miss All Around 2010

Twenty-four-yearold Ashlee Estel was born in Arvada, Colo., but has hung her hat in Wyoming for the past seven years.

During those seven years, Wyoming has exposed her to ranchers and cowboys who mentored her in a traditional Western way of life and aided her in becoming an accomplished horsewoman.

Ashlee, a true cowgirl, understands the importance of hard work, integrity, passion and generos-

ity. Values she learned early on in life have helped her dreams become a reality. These same values helped Ashlee truly understand the importance of hard work, passion, integrity, and generosity.

Ashlee graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science in Animal and Veterinary Sciences, with a concentration in production. While at the University of Wyoming she was involved in the Block and Bridle Club, Rangeland Management, Rodeo Club and Swing Club. In Ashlee’s spare time she enjoys running, hunting, fishing, shooting and crocheting. Ashlee’s parents, John and Teresa, support her future endeavors of one day becoming a pharmaceutical representative.

If given the opportunity to become Miss Rodeo Wyoming, Ashlee’s love of the equine world and rodeo would inspired her to promote our Western heritage and educate the rapidly growing urban society about the importance of agriculture, and its lifestyle. She believes she can help people better understand the agriculture industry through making herself a liaison between the urban community and rodeo.

Kiley Boe Miss Cody Stampede Kiley Boe is a Wyoming native raised in Cody, the “Rodeo Capital of the World.”

Her background includes summers working at a dude ranch where she was able to familiarize guests with the Western way of life, and with rodeo through the Cody Nite Rodeo and The Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede. Kiley also worked with the Reaching Hands Ranch program, which rescues horses and uses them to mentor at-risk youth. These opportunities gave her great insight and preparation for her responsibilities as a rodeo queen.

Kiley’s platform is “Just Get Out!” and promotes outdoor activity. Be it hiking in a state park, going for an all day horseback ride or joining a team for Relay for Life, Kiley believes in staying active. She adds, “We live in such beautiful country, we should enjoy every minute of it we can.”

During her reign, she has been able to preserve and spread knowledge of the Western way of life, be an ambassador for her hometown, a role model for young rodeo fans and a representative for the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association.

“I am a Wyoming cowgirl through and through.

I am passionate about all things Wyoming – the people, our values and ideals, our Western lifestyle, and, above all things, rodeo. As Miss Rodeo Wyoming, I hope to turn rodeo spectators into rodeo fans and preserve and promote all things Wyoming.”

Shawna started her 4-H career at an early age with sewing and clothing projects in addition to competing on her horses. Later, she added rope-craft and started making her own tack. While in high school, Shawna participated in volleyball and cheerleading. She was also an active member of FBLA, Student Council and FFA. While a member of FFA, Shawna competed on the chapter’s horse judging team, the parliamentary procedure team, and the ag sales team. She also received her FFA State Degree and Equine Proficiency honors.

Shawna is a senior at the University of Wyoming, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Communications with a minor in Marketing. She is a member of the Collegiate FFA chapter, Block and Bridle and is a Student Ambassador for the University of Wyoming.

After completing her degree, Shawna plans to obtain her equine massage therapy certification.

Shawna has always been an outgoing individual, full of excitement and enthusiasm. She welcomes new challenges and believes that if you climb in the saddle, you better be ready for the ride.

Pathway to Water Quality takes first step in 2010

The Pathway to Water Quality exhibit is a new attraction to the state fairgrounds this year.

Designed as an outdoor classroom, the exhibit combines the efforts of multiple agencies, landowners and community citizens to implement voluntary measures to enhance and protect Wyoming’s water resources.

Completion of the project will take several years, but demonstrations for children and adults will be held during the 2010 Wyoming State Fair.

“We started the pathway in front of the Agriculture and Natural Resource building and will have a courtyard there. Demonstration sites will look at different ways to manage and protect water quality. They are designed as take-home demonstrations that can be applied to a variety of situations in both rural and urban environments,” explains Grant Stumbough of Southeast Wyoming RC&D. The entire pathway will be constructed using a new material known as driveable grass, which is comprised of little blocks of pervious concrete.

Grass or sand can be placed between each block, hence the name. Below the top layer is six inches of gravel and below that is six inches of sand. The pathway is designed as a filter to absorb excess water that would otherwise run off. Upon absorption, the gravel and sand filter the water, rather than it simply running off into the river.

“When complete, the pathway will probably

be about half a mile long and the entire path will be made using driveable grass. In addition to acting as filter, the pathway will guide people along a myriad of water quality exhibits and demonstrations complete with informative signs at each stop.

There will be several wetlands and retention ponds for the cleaned water to flow into. Trees will be planted and grass plots will be placed along the pathway with information on each grass species.

We have a variety of project and demonstration ideas to consider and implement over the next ten years,” notes Stumbough.

The project is funded in part by a Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) grant and a Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) offered through the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Donations from industry participants are also being utilized, and Stumbough says more people are becoming involved all the time.

“We hope to add more diversification to the state fair with this project and add a natural resources aspect in addition to the livestock side,” comments Stumbough.

Stop by the courtyard in front of the Agriculture and Natural Resources building to see samples of driveable grass and other innovative new products that can be used to absorb and clean excess water. A variety of demonstrations will be held throughout the week for the public and many will include useable, take-home information.
