Genetic performance is key at Midland Bull Test Columbus, Mont. – Every April, countless consignors and over 1,000 bulls from across the country congregate in Columbus, Mont. to measure performance potential of individuals and sire groups during the annual Midland Bull Test. This year marks 58 years of the best of the best going head to head for a coveted spot in the Final Sort Sale. “Our emphasis continues to be on balanced performance - from sensible birthweights, early maturity, functional maternal traits, economical weights, compatible carcass merits, a phenotype that enhances these economical traits,” says the McDonnell and Williams families, organizers of the event. “Considering yearling bulls bought in the spring won’t sire a weaned calf until the next fall, and daughters of these bulls won’t go into production for two years, it is no light matter,” they say. “Look at the dam production records on the Midland Bulls, it is unmatched. There is no other sale that offers buyers as strong an offering as the composite maternal growth bulls at Midland.” They continue, “Buyers would have to go to a dozen bull sales or more to find as many top bulls from top producing cows as they will see at Midland in one day.” “One of the nicest compliments we receive each year
from the buyers at Midland is the fact buyers can purchase high quality bulls all the way through the sale,” the families boast. “Many of the bulls selling at Midland would be used to start most production sales.” Program history According to their website, Midland Bull Test began in 1962 when Leo McDonnell Sr. started testing a group of bulls from small purebred breeders. “This concept of weighing and measuring cattle and publishing the resulting data as far as birthweights, weaning weights, gains, dam’s production and yearling weights was not met favorably by most of the purebred industry nationally,” the website reads. The site continues, “However, under this constant pressure from the opponents of performance, Midland Bull Test, the Montana Beef Performance Association and several staunch seedstock producers continued to define, refine and promote performance as a primary tool in managing the profitability of a cowherd.” “We’re proud to be one of those who didn’t compromise our beliefs or program. Although Montana Beef Performance is no longer in existence, its effect and primary guidelines have continued on and been incorporated, in part, into many of the major breed performance associations,” they say.
“Proven through competition, Midland bulls are unsurpassed in providing more trait leaders in the major breeds than any other breeder, test station or the combined effort of the major stock shows,” the website concludes. Efficiency testing Midland Bull Test is North America’s largest feed efficiency testing program. The program utilizes the GrowSafe system. GrowSafe allows cattle to eat one at a time and uses electronic identification to collect data and monitor and track consumption. This data is used to calculate residual feed intake (RFI). “RFI is relevant and important to producers as it correlates the pounds of gain to the pounds of intake, and therefore, the increment cost of gain,” according to Midland. “As such, RFI allows producers to determine those individuals who have the capacity to gain quickly and cheaply.” GrowSafe defines incremental pounds of feed required for one pound of gain above or below the average. Efficient animals eat less and have a lower RFI, while inefficient animals eat more and have a higher RFI. Midland Bull Test also tests bull for fertility through scrotal circumference measurements and semen evaluations.
“Fertility is a major objective in a cow/calf operation,” according to Midland leadership. “A key component of efficient calf production is a high fertility level in each breeding animal in the herd.” Semen quality is determined by criteria such as sperm structure, motility, volume and concentration. All bulls sold in the Final Sort Sale must meet a minimum scrotal circumference measurement of 32 centimeters by 365 days of age. “Measuring the scrotal circumference of young bulls is an accurate and repeatable method to assess current and future sperm-producing ability,” says the website. “The measurement gives an estimate of the weight of the testes, which is directly related to the level of sperm production. Scrotal measurement is also positively correlated with semen volume and quality.” They continue, “Bulls with adequate scrotal development for their age have a higher probability of becoming satisfactory breeders than bulls with smaller scrotal circumferences. Scrotal circumference is of medium to high heritability.” Sale day Bull sales start at 11 a.m. both days, with awards presented prior to the sale. The sale order is determined by the Midland Bull Test Index, which is 25 per-
cent average daily gain, 25 percent nursing ratio, 25 percent yearling ration and 25 percent efficiency ratio, coupled with estimated sale value. The sale order will be posted in advance and a sale catalog is available at midlandbulltest.com. Small changes should be expected and will be posted online. On sale day, more information is available online or by calling 406-322-5597, 406-322-9044 or 406-3229911. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder with the auctioneer settling any differences. Cattle will be sold according to health regulations of the state of Montana and interstate health certificates will be furnished for transport. Additional fees apply to cattle purchased by Canadian buyers. For all registered cattle in the sale, registration papers will be transferred to their new owner at the seller’s expense. Cattle will be delivered to
central locations in the lower 48 states. More information on delivery is available in the Midland Bull Test Sale catalog. Auctioneers include Joe Goggins, Roger Jacobs and Greg Goggins. Field representatives for each breed will be present including Kurt Kangas from the American Angus Association, Katie Oschner from the Red Angus Association of America, Dean Pike of the American Salers Association, John Paterson from the American Simmental Association, Jim Brown of the North American South Devon Association and Ty Groshens of the American International Charolais Association. Callie Hanson, managing editor of the Wyoming Livestock Roundup, has compiled this information from the Midland Bull Test Final Report, catalog and website. Send comments on this article to roundup@wylr.net or visit midlandbulltest.com for more information.

Midland prepares for upcoming 2020 sale Dear Friends, With excitement, anticipation and humility, the Williams and McDonnell families personally invite you to join us for the Midland Bull Test sales April 2-3, 2020. The Final Sort Sale has become the source for bulls that sift themselves to the top. The paper, genomics and EPDs do not walk the walk for the bulls. The bulls must perform and be in the top end for average daily gain, weight per day of age and adjusted 365 weights. They also need to be structurally sound, pass a fertility exam and have a manageable disposition. These days in agriculture, the margins can be thin and we take it one step further for the cattlemen by measuring efficiency. One doesn’t simply select on low intake, one can select for balance between dry matter intake and gain to find the best of both worlds and achieve more profitability. We don’t encourage selection based on low intake alone, we encourage selecting for bal-
ance between DMI and gain to attain the best of both worlds. The amount of data one can accumulate on an individual animal can be mind boggling, however, one cannot over emphasize the need for balance. The consequences of single trait selection can quickly rear its ugly head. Midland strives to identify the bulls that have balance across the board and cover the bases as indicated in the MBT index. This index also determines the sale order at Midland. Measuring actual performance with measured efficiency is the indicator of progress or not. The commercial cattleman is always at the forefront of Midland’s mindset with testing bulls. Developing them on a high roughage ration coupled with moderate gains to enable them to become skeletally sound for years of breeding service. Each sort leading up to the final sort starts with the consignor making the best mating selections for their program
and their customers. This is followed by the in-herd performance and selecting the top end of those bull calves being sent to Midland to perform on a level playing field. Bulls are continually sifted for structure, feet and disposition. All these criteria are considered along with the bull’s actual performance and determine the Final Sort Sale. Cattlemen can be assured these bulls are the cream of the crop out of more than 150 herds. We extend a personal invitation to partake in the Midland Bull Test Event and enjoy the top notch entertainment by Kyle Shobe and the Walk ‘Em Boys and great food and camaraderie with like-minded people. This portion takes place in the evenings of April 1 and 2. To our previous buyers and consignors, we appreciate your friendship and trust in developing and selling bulls. To new customers, we welcome you! Enjoy the Final Sort! -Steve Williams

AGA provides multitude of services to help producers in modern industry “Gelbvieh semen was first imported into the United States from Germany in 1971, which was the same year the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) was established,” says Megan Slater, AGA executive director. She notes 30 plus years later, in the early 2000s, the AGA began registering Balancer cattle, a cross between Gelbvieh and Angus or Red Angus. With this, the AGA was the first cattle breed association in the U.S. to have a registered hybrid. “Gelbvieh cattle are well known in the industry for their maternal strengths including fertility, quiet temperament and longevity,” says Slater. “Balancer cattle have become very popular in the industry and combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, fertility and longevity with the carcass qualities of the Angus breed.” Today, the association consists of approximately 1,000 members with a registry database containing over one million animals including nearly 45,000 currently active Gelbvieh, Balancer and Gelbvieh-influenced cows. AGA is the largest Gelbvieh association in the world and ranks fifth in number of registered animals among beef breed associations in the U.S. Their mission is dedicated to recording, promoting and improving Gelbviehinfluenced cattle. The Gelbvieh breed According to AGA’s website, the Gelbvieh breed is one of the oldest German cattle breeds, first found in three Franconian districts of Bavaria. “Through pure-breeding, ‘red-yellow Franconian cattle’ were developed from several local strains, including Celtic-German Landrance and Heil-Brown Landrance cat-
tle. These local strains have been further improved with intensive breeding work since 1870. This solid-colored breed of red-yellow cattle saw great popularity as draft and slaughter cattle,” reads the AGA’s website. The website notes several societies for improved breeding were founded. The societies were aimed at improvement through standardizing the indigenous breed by selecting the best bulls, purebreeding for a single color and improving performance of work fitness and milk production. “In 1897, the Breed Society for Yellow Franconia Cattle in Numberg was founded,” reads the website. “It was followed by the Breed Society for Gelbvieh in Lower Franconia, based in Wurzburg and founded in 1899. Since World War II, Germany used a stringent selection program to repopulate its cattle herds. Only three percent of the registered cows were used to produce potential bulls. These cows were selected on structural soundness and conformation.” “Bulls from these select cows were performance-tested and the top half was progenytested. The progeny evaluation included gestation length, birthweight, calving ease, growth rate, slaughter weight, carcass quality conformation, udder soundness, fertility and milk production in daughters. Semen was released only from bulls that proved their superiority in progeny testing,” says the website. “In the 1960s, Red Danish cattle were included in the herd book to improve milk production. Leness Hall, the director of International Marketing for Carnation Genetics, first saw Gelbvieh cattle in 1969. He worked toward
importing Gelbvieh semen to the U.S. and finally was able to bring 43,000 units to America in 1971. In that same year, the American Gelbvieh Associtation was formed,” says the website. Today, AGA consists of primarily purebred cattle of at least 88 percent Gelbvieh as well as Balancer cattle. Balancer cattle must be a minimum of 25 percent to maximum 75 percent Gelbvieh. “Many AGA members recognize the value of Gelbvieh genetics in a crossbreeding program, thus the AGA provides feasible avenues for members to register those cattle for the purpose of seedstock production,” reads the website. Why Gelbvieh? When it comes to Gelbvieh, versus other breeds of cattle, Slater says they excel in maternal superiority through greater longevity, higher fertility and weaning more pounds of calf per cow exposed. “All of these things can contribute to more potential profitability to improve a producer’s bottom line,” states Slater. “With these attributes, Gelbvieh and Balancer fit very well into a crossbreeding scenario.” In addition to their maternal strengths, Slater also notes Balancer cattle add pounds, make grade and deliver value when it comes to performance in the feed yard and on the rail. “The American Gelbvieh Association has always been a very commercially focused breed association and we are committed to providing our members and their commercial customers with tools and services for success in today’s beef industry,” states Slater. AGA “Aside from the traditional services of the breed
association, which includes tracking pedigrees and providing expected progeny differences (EPDs), the AGA also offers tools and services to help commercial cattle producers in today’s modern beef industry,” explains Slater. “Those services include Balancer Edge, a source and age verification program for Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced feeder cattle as well as Feeder Finder, a program that assists producers marketing load lots of Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced feeder cattle,” she adds. Slater notes the AGA recognizes youth in the beef industry are its future, and therefore, provides sev-
eral opportunities for junior members, ages eight to 21, to become involved in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA). “Each year, the AGJA hosts a junior national show that not only includes showing cattle, but also several educational contests that help to develop important skills for future leaders,” Slater says. “This year’s Gelbvieh Junior Nationals is the Route 66 Classic, held in Springfield, Mo. July 5-10.” Slater explains in addition to the national show, AGJA will team up with the American Junior Simmental Association and American Junior Shorthorn Association

Breeding soundness exams are crucial for production Many factors play a role in bull fertility and breeding ability, so it is important to make sure every bull has a breeding soundness examination. Breeding soundness exams look at five key factors - physical soundness, reproductive tract soundness, scrotal circumference, percentage of sperm cells that are normal and acceptable motility. Even if a bull was fertile in previous years and sired a lot of calves, he may have a problem the producer is not aware of and should be checked again before the breeding season. Some problems and injuries are not obvious until the bull is evaluated by a veterinarian. Dr. Brian Shoemake of University of Missouri says a breeding soundness exam (BSE) for bulls is one of the most important tools to utilize in a breed-
ing operation. “It’s a good way to assess the bull, with opportunity to closely examine feet and legs, eyes, teeth and body condition, as well as reproductive organs,” he says. Breeding soundness exams “With virgin bulls, we can identify any anatomical abnormalities. We examine the penis, scrotum and testicles, to see if there is anything that might inhibit his ability to breed cows,” he says. “We want to find any problems before a bull goes into the herd, so this is a major part of the BSE.” Shoemake continues, “We also assess the accessory organs that play a role with ejaculation and getting the semen into the cow’s reproductive tract so conception can actually occur.” Making sure all the
bull’s reproductive organs are healthy is important. “We may find diseases that are treatable, and may delay the bull’s breeding ability until later,” says Shoemake. “Some problems are treatable, while other are not.” Scrotal circumference is measured, especially on young bulls, to make sure they meet minimum standards. “There are some breed requirements, but we generally follow the American Society for Theriogenology recommendations,” Shoemake explains. “As long as the scrotal circumference is adequate by those standards, it meets our expectations for a breeding bull.” A semen sample will also be collected and evaluated during a BSE. “One of the drawbacks of the BSE is we are only assessing semen qual-

“It’s not that one unsatisfactory BSE fails a bull for life, it’s just at that particular point in time we don’t think the bull will actually be able to do the job,” says Shoemake. “We typically recommend getting the BSE done at least 30 to 60 days prior to the start of breeding season,” Shoemake says. “Then, if there is something wrong, there is still time to find and acquire a replacement bull, but not so far ahead of breeding season that a lot could happen to change the bull’s status.” “The BSE is only accurate for that point in time,” he says. “It needs to be done annually and before each breeding season. Ranchers planning to have both fall and spring herds should test prior to each breeding.” “We need to make sure he is still fertile and sound,” according to Shoemake. “We don’t want to find out later he didn’t settle his cows. The cost of a BSE is very minimal compared to the loss associated with open cows.” “After a BSE, we know whether or not a certain bull is normal and has the potential to still be good when we need him,” says

Shoemake. “It’s a small investment when we consider a bull might be covering 30 to 40 cows, and those calves may be worth somewhere between $600 and $1,000 per head.” He continues, “This makes the cost of a BSE insignificant. That cost will vary somewhat by region, but usually somewhere between $50 and $100.” One thing that may not be part of the standard BSE test, but is recommended, is a test for trichomoniasis. “The perfect time to take a sample for the test is while doing a BSE, since we already have the bull in the chute,” he says. “Depending on the bull buyer’s biosecurity plan, we may also do other screening tests at that time, especially for a new bull, such as tests for bovine viral diarrhea or Johne’s if these tests have not already been done.” Making sure a new bull is not bringing in a new disease is important to the health of every herd. ity, making sure sperm are motile, with abundant numbers and that their form and structure are normal as well,” he says. “We are only examining the semen, making sure the sperm are capable of fertilizing an egg and not libido.” “A bull might have exceptional semen and be very fertile, but not have much sex drive,” says Shoemake. “That bull might not breed enough cows.” He notes some producers might consider using low-libido bulls for artificial insemination, rather than for natural service. “Since libido is heritable, this is not a good idea if we plan to keep sons or daughters, since their reproductive success might also be questionable,” he stresses. BSE results “One thing producers need to understand is we don’t actually fail or pass a bull on a BSE,” Shoemake explains. “The bull is either satisfactory as a potential breeder, unsatisfactory or deferred until a later test if we find something we need to treat.” A young immature bull may also be deferred until a later date to check again.

Artificial insemination boasts a colorful history Many seedstock beef herds utilize artificial insemination (AI) and a growing number of commercial herds are moving towards AI on their heifers and high-performing cows. This is a way to extend the benefits of a good bull, make sure heifers are bred to easy-calving bulls or utilize genetics of multiple outstanding sires without having to own them. The process and technology, along with conception rates for AI have improved tremendously in the past 50 years, but the procedure is not new. Legend has it the first use of artificial insemination was in horses, accomplished by Arab sheiks who wanted to utilize bloodlines of tribal enemies. They would sneak up to the other tribe’s herd at night with a mare in heat and secretly collect semen from the desired stallion into a leather pouch and take it back to their camp to inseminate a prize mare. Early AI usage The earliest documented use of artificial insemination was in 1780 when an Italian physiologist named Spallanzani produced puppies with AI in dogs. A few more reports of successful AI breeding appeared during the 1800s, but it wasn’t until about 1900 that extensive studies with farm ani-
.
mals began in Russia. A scientist named Ivanov developed the technique for mares, and by 1930 he and his associates were doing artificial insemination of cattle and sheep. By 1938, AI was used in U.S. dairy herds and a few beef herds using extended and cooled liquid semen, packaged in glass vials. Most AI studs were local, because fresh semen couldn’t be transported very far. Carl Rugg, owner of Bovine Elite, LLC, says when he first became interested in AI, the process was performed by veterinarians who serviced cattle herds in their area, and later by specialized AI technicians who were employees of AI cooperatives. Rugg received his master’s degree in Reproductive Physiology from Colorado State University. “The semen distributor would bring semen from three or four bulls to the veterinarian, and in those early years it was mainly dairy bulls,” he explains. “The semen was extended with a media to prolong the life of the semen, placed in sealed glass ampules and kept cold in an ice bath.” “The extended semen was drawn into a plastic pipette to breed the
cow. Fresh, cooled semen would last two to five days, depending on the quality of the semen and fertility of the bull,” he says. “When I was a boy in western New York, my father had Holsteins and started using AI on his cows in the late 1950s,” Rugg notes. “The veterinarian or AI technician came to the farm and discussed with dad the merits of the bulls he had available that day.” He continues, “Dad would select a bull, the technician would retrieve the ampule of semen from the ice water bath and breed the cow.” “Dad never had a bull on the place,” he explains. “Conception rates were high with cooled fresh semen. In those early days with fresh semen, the pregnancy rate was well above 70 percent in our herd.” “The biggest issue was catching the cow in heat at the right time. Dad would observe the cows in the morning and evening for signs of estrus and put a chalk mark on the one to be bred,” Rugg says. “Even if we weren’t there when the technician came, the cow would be in a stall and he’d know which one to breed.” Progress A lot of progress has been made in reproduc-
tive and semen technology since then. Advent of frozen semen revolutionized the AI industry. Some progeny testing was done in the late 1960s and early 1970s by the Beef Improvement Federation. The American Simmental Association had the first sire evaluation in the early 1970s. Importations of some European breeds were only possible using frozen semen and AI, due to restrictions on importing live animals. “This was about the time we began packaging and freezing semen in French straws,” he says. “We continue to use this technique and packaging method, which allows semen to freeze and thaw with higher recovery and ultimately better conception rate with frozen semen.” He continues, “This was an improvement over the process of freezing and storing semen in glass ampules.”
Conception rates with frozen semen have improved even more in recent decades. Being able to ultrasound the cow’s ovaries and determine time of ovulation helped researchers figure out the best time to inseminate cattle, resulting in better conception rates. Today the AI process is easier, with synchronization protocols. All cows in the herd can be bred the same day instead of having to watch for signs of heat during breeding season. Willie Altenburg, a cattleman in Colorado who runs registered Simmental and Angus, has worked for several semen companies and says heat synchronization and AI has worked very well for heifers. “Heat synchronization in large herds has become commonplace for heifers as a management tool for many producers,” Altenburg says. “It allows producers to breed

and calve their heifers ahead of the main cowherd.” “Advent of the controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device and use of prostaglandin has helped with adult cows,” says Altenburg. “Today, the beef industry is doing more cow AI. Synchronization and fixed-time insemination has helped, but we need an army of arms to get this accomplished.” “Most producers can’t breed 100 or more cows in one morning, and it can also be a challenge with some ranch facilities,” he says. “AI organizations now have portable breeding barns and technicians who can come do chute-side service for the whole operation and get those cows all bred in a few hours,” says Altenburg. Crossbreeding has many diff erent possible systems Increased heterosis in crossbred cattle is no secret in the beef community. In commercial herds, crossbreeding improves efficiency through heterosis and breed complementation. University of Missouri (UM) Extension lays out the different systems and how they work. “Crossbred cows with crossbred calves can be expected to wean as much as 25 percent more pounds of calf per cow exposed than purebred cows with purebred calves of the same average breed makeup,” UM explains. “To take advantage of breed complementation, breeds with good maternal ability and milk production would be used in a dam line and be mated to large framed, fast growing terminal sire breeds.” “Optimal crossbreeding systems take advantage of individual and maternal heterosis and breed complementation,” UM explains. “An optimal system requires a minimum of three breeds.” UM continues, “Unfortunately, it also requires multiple breeding pastures or artificial insemination (AI) to ensure correct matings resulting in maximum het-
erosis. A relatively large herd is required so that efficient use can be made of more than one breed of bull.” However, UM notes there are ways for producers to reap the benefits of heterosis with a small herd and one to two bulls. Specific crossbreeding systems “Two-breed specific crossbreeding systems use a specific pattern of consistently mating a particular breed of bull to a particular breed or breed-cross of cow,” UM explains. “The resulting offspring are not brought back into the system.” UM continues, “An example of a two-breed specific cross would be mating Angus bulls to Hereford cows. The resulting black baldy calves are sold. This system is used frequently in western range states.” “Two-breed specific systems are often referred to as terminal systems because the progeny is not returned to the herd. This system provides maximum individual heterosis because the sire and dam have no common breed composition,” says UM. “No maternal heterosis is provided, since cows are purebred. Opportunity
exists for breed complementation because maternal and paternal breeds can be chosen for favorable characteristics which contribute to the cross.” “Most importantly, these breeds will be used consistently in their role as a maternal or paternal breed in this particular crossing system,” UM explains. “The source of replacement heifers is the major obstacle for using the two-breed specific crossbreeding system.” “A three-breed specific or terminal cross results from mating Charolais bulls to the aforementioned black baldy cows. In the three-breed cross, both individual and maternal heterosis are maximized,” says UM. “Maternal heterosis is maximized because the breeds crossed to produce the maternal line, the black baldies, have no common composition,” UM explains. “Individual heterosis is maximized because the maternal line, Angus and Hereford, has no common breed composition with the terminal sire, Charolais.” “With this and all other specific crossbreeding systems, source of replacement heifers is a potential problem,”

UM stresses. “A dependable supply is needed if they are to be purchased. Management considerations are important if the producer is to provide replacement heifers from within his own herd.” “In a backcross system, heifers from a first cross are mated to a bull from one of the breeds in their own breed makeup,” says UM. “For example, a black baldy heifer might be mated to a Hereford bull. The backcross is most often used when a particular breed is well suited to the production environment such as indigenous breeds in tropical areas” UM continues, “Backcrosses yield maximum maternal heterosis, but only 50 percent of maximum individual heterosis. The reduction in individual heterosis is due to the common breed makeup between bull and cow in the backcross.” Rotational systems UM notes rotational systems involve a specific cyclical pattern on mating breeds of bulls to progeny resulting from a preceding cross. The simplest example of a rotational system is the two-breed rotation or criss-cross system. “A series of alternating backcrosses are used in the two-breed rotation. In a Hereford-Angus rotation, progeny resulting from an initial Hereford-Angus cross would be backcrossed to one of the parental breeds, say Angus,” UM explains. “The resulting backcross progeny, three-quarters Angus and one-quarter Hereford, are mated to
Hereford bulls.” UM continues, “Progeny resulting from this third generation are mated to Angus bulls and this cyclical pattern continues.” “Three-breed rotations simply add a third breed of bull to the cycle of matings used in a two-breed rotation,” UM notes. “Cows are mated to the breed of bull that makes up the smallest proportion of their own composition. A three-breed rotation increases use of individual and maternal heterosis to 86 percent of maximum.” Rotaterminal crossbreeding UM defines rotaterminal crosses as a combination of rotational and specific crossbreeding systems. “They add some of the best features of each system,” UM boasts. “A rotation, usually of two maternal breeds, supplies cows for a terminal mating. For example, older cows from the Hereford-Angus twobreed rotation would be mated to bulls from a terminal sire breed.” “Although not maximized in all the calves, some individual and maternal heterosis contributes to the performance of all calves produced. Approximately 40 to 60 percent of the cows are involved in the rotational part of the system,” says UM. UM continues, “Indi-

vidual and maternal heterosis is yielded by this part of the system at the same rate as that for a two-breed rotation. All male calves from this part of the system are sold while female calves are retained as needed for replacements.” “Crossbred cows from the maternal rotation are mated to a terminal sire breed. Cows express partial maternal heterosis and calves express 100 percent individual heterosis,” says UM. Breed complementation is available from the terminal phase of the system. All calves from the terminal mating are sold. “One advantage is that heifers usually are initially mated to a bull of similar size as their own sire breed as part of the rotation,” according to UM. “As cows mature and have a reduced likelihood of experiencing calving difficulty, they can be transferred to the terminal cross to be mated to a larger breed of bull.” UM notes this system suffers the drawback of complexity and unequal usage of bulls. A minimum of four bulls must be utilized to properly operate the system, which makes it unattractive to the majority of beef producers. Scrotal circumference matters for fertility Measuring scrotal circumference is part of any breeding soundness exam because size of the testes determines how many sperm are produced daily. Some breeds, however, have smaller circumference than the average across breeds, but the bulls are still very fertile. University of Calgary Professor and Veterinarian John P. Kastelic says the main focus of the breeding soundness exam is the reproductive tract and bulls have to meet minimum standards for scrotal circumference. Goals are key “We want bulls to meet minimums, but it also depends on our goals,” Kastelic says. “If we are just producing feeder cattle, scrotal circumference is slightly less important, and we could get by with a bull that barely meets minimum requirements.” “If we want to keep daughters, however, scrotal circumference is more important because it’s an indication of the future fertility of those daughters,” says Kastelic. “Bulls with bigger testes produce more sperm, and to some extent produce better quality sperm,” he explains. “There are differences between breeds,
however.” “Limousin and Blonde d’ Aquitaine may average only 32 to 33 centimeters circumference, yet they have really good semen, versus breeds like Angus and Simmental that tend to have larger testes,” he explains. “A bull with only 32 centimeter circumference will generally have poor semen quality. Thus, it is also important to consider the breed.” If a bull’s scrotal circumference is outside the average for his age and breed, there may be a problem. “For instance, a yearling bull with huge testes, such as 42 to 44 centimeters, may be likely to have subsequent testicular degeneration. We worry about those bulls because they may have some inherent defect,” Kastelic says. “We should be wary of a bull whose scrotal circumference is way off the charts early in life and those with an extremely large frame score,” he says. “Often, these really tall animals have delayed puberty.” He continues, “When a male goes through puberty, there’s an increase in testosterone and increased length of long bones with a growth spurt. Then
when puberty is reached, growth slows. The growth plates at the end of the long bones fuse at puberty, with no more lengthening of those bones and therefore, no more height.” “Bulls that grow tall, with extreme frame, may have reasonable mature scrotal circumference, but they often have reduced yearling circumference because of delayed puberty,” Kastelic explains. “Any young bull with an extreme frame score or one with massive yearling scrotal circumference makes me worry about possible fertility issues.” Other factors The shape of the scrotum is also important. According to Kastelic the normal, healthy, fertile bull has a pear-shaped scrotum with an obvious neck above the testes. “We don’t want a bull with a really short scrotum and the testes tucked up against the belly,” he says. “This can be hard to judge in cold weather, but if it’s a warm day, the testes drop down farther and we should see an obvious scrotal neck.” “At the other extreme, some bos indicus bulls have a very long scrotal neck,” he notes. “In gen-
eral, we don’t want to see the bottom of the scrotum below the point of the hock or the testes may be easily injured in rough terrain. We want to avoid extremes.” “Sometimes, we see a bull with a minor rotation of one testis,” he notes. “One side of the scrotum may be a little turned. Generally, this is no cause for concern.” “In other instances, a bull may have testes mismatched in size or shape. If there is substantial difference, this may mean the big one is swollen or the other one is degenerating,” says Kastelic. “We palpate the testes. Normal testes feel firm, but slightly soft. They should not be rock hard, but also not too soft and compressible,” he says. “The tail of the epididymis is at the bottom and toward the midline of each testis and can also be palpated and checked.” “Occasionally, a bull will be missing the tail of the epididymis on one side and can only ejaculate sperm from the other side,” Kastelic says. “Overfat bulls may have a straight-sided scrotum with no narrowing at the top, indicating too much fat in the neck of
the scrotum,” according to Kastelic. “These bulls generally have poor fertility due to the insulating effects of the fat, inhibiting heat loss and proper cooling.” Kastelic explains their testes are always too warm for optimum sperm production and viability. Fat in the neck of the scrotum also hinders the ability of a bull to raise and lower his testes properly for optimum temperature control. Kastelic advises against using bulls with a V-shaped scrotum that tapers down to a pointed tip. “The pointed, wedgeshaped scrotum tends to hold testes closer to the body wall. Bulls with this scrotal shape usually have undersized testes and produce fewer sperm,” he explains. “Fat deposits in the scrotum can usually be detected when measuring scrotal circumference,” he says. Measuring correctly “Before applying the measuring tape, the testes should be pressed firmly into the lowest part of the scrotum so they are side by side, and all scrotal wrinkles that might interfere with accurate mea-
surement eliminated,” he says “Thumb and forefingers of one hand should be placed above the testes with the hand extending down from the side of the scrotum, around the back and finger tips wrapping around and pointing backward,” he explains. “Avoid sticking the thumb between the testes or excessively forcing testes to the bottom of the scrotum, as that would falsely increase the measurement.” The looped tape should be slipped up over the scrotum and pulled tight around the largest portion, with only moderate tension. “In a bull with normal testes, the testes will not be compressed much at all by the tape,” says Kastelic. “By contrast, a bull with a thick, fat scrotum or soft testes may compress rather easily.” Measurements are usually recorded to the nearest half centimeter, with at least two measurements taken until a consistent reading is obtained. Evaluating bulls’ BCS prior to breeding season is critical Although breeding season for many operations is still a few months away, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Extension Cow/Calf Specialist Karla Wilke says producers need to start evaluating the body condition of their bulls and preparing them for the breeding season. “Body condition score (BCS) is just as important in bulls as it is in cows,” says Wilke. “Many times when producers are disappointed with the results of their preg check, they assume the cows were thin and/or not cycling well at breeding time.” Wilke continues, “While this may be a part of the issue, seldom the condition of the bulls prior to breeding time is evaluated to see
if BCS of the bulls could be a potential issue.” BCS of bulls Wilke notes research has shown bulls with a BCS of five or six have better semen quality than those with a four and below or a seven and above. “Much like evaluating a cow’s BCS, producers need to evaluate the cover over the front ribs, in the brisket and over the tailhead,” explains Wilke. “It is also important not to let gut fill or hair cover impact their evaluation.” According to a UNL publication titled Body Condition Scoring Beef Cows, “In a moderate BCS of five the 12th and 13th ribs are not visible to the eye unless the animal has been shrunk. The transverse spinous processes can only
be felt with firm pressure and may feel rounded but are not noticeable to the eye. Spaces between the process are not visible and are only distinguishable with firm pressure. Areas on each side of the tailhead are starting to fill.” The report notes in a moderate BCS of six, the ribs are fully covered and are not noticeable to the eye, the hindquarters are plump and full and there is noticeable “springiness” over the foreribs and on each side of the tailhead. It states firm pressure is required to feel the transverse processes and the brisket contains some fat. Preparing bulls for breeding “It is not uncommon for a bull to lose 100 to 200 pounds during the breeding season which can translate to one or
two scores lost,” states Wilke. “Therefore, it is critical to have bulls with a BCS of 5.5 to 6.5 before the breeding season.” Wilke recommends evaluating bulls at least 90 days before the breeding season. “This will allow producers time to add the necessary weight to bulls before the busy season,” she says. “Typically, prior to breeding season, bulls are fed hay throughout the winter,” Wilke adds. “If a 1,300 pound yearling bull was fed 35 pounds grass hay with 56 percent total digestible nutrient (TDN) and 10 percent crude protein, he would likely maintain his weight but not gain any.” Wilke goes on to explain if a producer wanted this bull to gain weight, 100 pounds for
example, they would need to feed 35 pounds of grass hay with an additional protein source. Wilke recommends one pound of distillers’ based cube. “It is important to evaluate bulls 90 days prior to the breeding season,” she states. “If they wait until 60 days before the breeding season, and they need a bull to gain 100 pounds, they will have to decrease hay to 31 pounds and increase their protein supplement to 3.5 pounds. Of course, this is more costly.” Wilke also notes mature bulls often weigh more, between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds, so feed intake would need to be increased accordingly. Other considerations “A few additional ways
to maintain wellness and put weight on bulls is to use windbreaks and bedding to reduce body weight loss and prevent frostbite on testicles,” says Wilke. “On top of evaluating bulls beforehand, producers also need to continue monitoring their bulls condition throughout the breeding season as well,” says Wilke. She continues, “Lastly, I want to remind producers Extension personnel are always available to help with ration development when producers are trying to maintain or increase the BCS of their bulls.” Hannah Bugas is the assistant editor for the Wyoming Livestock Roundup. Selection for carcass merit begins in the bull buying pen “Consumers want beef that is tender, juicy, flavorful and lean,” states Professor Emeritus and Texas A&M Extension Beef Cattle Specialist Stephen Hammack in an A&M Extension publication. “The primary indicators of these factors are U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Quality Grade and USDA Yield Grade.” Quality grade predicts eating satisfaction while yield grade predicts percent leanness, or cutability, according to Hammack. The publication, produced by AgriLife Communications, The Texas A&M System, and titled Texas Adapted Genetic Strategies for Beef Cattle IX: Selection for Carcass Merit, discusses selection of cattle based on carcass merit. The publication points out one of the first places a producer can start improving their carcass merit is in the bull sale pen when selecting for sires. Factors affecting carcass traits First and foremost, Hammack points out there are many factors affecting carcass
merit. “According to the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, important factors affecting tenderness include genetics, age, time on feed, feed rations, growth implant programs, animal temperament, pre-slaughter techniques, slaughter procedures, electrical simulation, chilling conditions, calcium chloride injection, blade tenderization and carcass aging time and conditions,” explains Hammack. On top of these, carcass merit may also be improved through selection of carcass traits. In order to make significant genetic improvements through selection on a carcass trait within a particular breed, Hammack states producers need to select outstanding sires, which is usually accomplished through AI. “For the majority of commercial producers who do not use AI, the fastest genetic change can be made by using superior sires from a breed noted for high expression of the specific trait they are looking at,” says Hammack.
“The greatest benefit usually results from a combination of moderate levels, not extremes, of traits economically important to the producer,” he continues. Relationships between carcass traits In order to better understand how to change carcass merit through genetic selection, Hammack says producers need to have knowledge of genetic influences on carcass traits and how they are related. “Research has shown marbling, ribeye area, fat thickness over the ribeye, cutability and tenderness are all moderately to highly heritable,” states Hammack. “Therefore, improvement should be possible if breeding stock are selected for those traits.” He notes selecting for a specific carcass trait may affect others. “Based on documented genetic relationships, selection for reduced fat should have little effect on ribeye area but markedly improve yield grade, although tenderness may be slightly reduced,”
states Hammack. “There are conflicting estimates of the genetic relationship between external fat thickness and marbling. Research indicates marbling declines somewhat as external fat is reduced by genetic selection,” he adds. “However, some breed associations have found little genetic relationship between fat thickness and marbling, based on field data collected for developing carcass EPDs.” He continues, “Research also shows if genetic selection is used to increase marbling, it should cause a slight reduction in ribeye area, moderate improvement in tenderness and slightly reduced cutability. However, breed association field data shows little genetic relationship between marbling and cutability.” Hammack also notes selecting for specific carcass traits may affect other important production traits as well. He explains research shows genetic selection for increased marbling will likely reduce weaning weight and yearling weight, while selec-
tion for higher cutability will likely increase weaning weight, yearling weight and mature cow weight. He also explains there appears to be little genetic relationship between reproductive factors and marbling, other than the fact that genetic types with more marbling may also reach sexual maturity somewhat earlier. “Selection for higher cutability may have negative effects on calving rate and calving ease,” he says. “Selection for extreme muscling appears to affect reproduction adversely in both males and females.” Overcoming affects of genetic correlation Hammack states it may be possible to overcome the effects of undesirable genetic correlations by concurrently selecting for all of the traits a producer is concerned with. However, he also notes selecting for more traits slows the rate of genetic change and concurrent selection for genetically antagonistic traits slows the rate of change even more. Hammack points out most
breed associations have an EPD for carcass weight, some have carcass-derived EPDs for marbling, ribeye area, fat thickness, yield grade and percent retail product and others have EPD for ultrasound measures of ribeye area, fat thickness, retail product and intramuscular fat. “Several also have $Value Indexes, which combine carcass and ultrasound measures with economic factors,” he says. “A few also have an EPD for tenderness.” Since carcass weights are closely related to yearling weight, ribeye area and fat thickness are included in yield grade and percent retail product and tenderness is important in consumer satisfaction, Hammack says the most useful EPDs in selecting for carcass merit are marbling or ultrasound intramuscular fat, yield grade or percent retail product and $Value carcass indexes. AICA off ers additional marketing opportunities for producers Charolais cattle originated in the old French provinces of Charolles and Nievre and these white cattle were generally confined to the area in which they originated until the French Revolution. In 1773, Claude Mathieu, a farmer and cattle producer from Charolles moved to Nievre with his herd of white cattle, where the breed flourished. One of the early influential herds in the region was established by Count Charles de Bouille in 1840. His selective breeding led him to set up a herd book in 1864. In 1882, breeders in Charolles established a herd book. In 1919, the two societies merged and established their headquarters at Nevers, the capital of Nievre. After World War II, the Charolais breed made its appearance in other parts of the world. In fact, in 1950 four bulls and six females
were exported to Brazil and one bull and three females were exported in 1955 to South Africa followed by three bulls and 15 females in 1956. AICA According to the American International Charolais Association’s (AICA) website, the first Charolais came into the U.S. from Mexico in 1934. “From there the breed grew rapidly. Wherever they were shown, they commanded instant attention,” states the website. “Producers admired both Charolais bulls and females for their muscling, correctness and size. They were also impressed with their calves. An everexpanding demand for purebred seedstock kept an active market for both bulls and females,” continues the website. AICA’s website notes the breeders established the American Charbray Breed-
ers Association and the American Charolais Breeders Association, both of which limited pedigrees to a blend of Charolais and Brahman breeding. “Producers who were utilizing other beef breed cattle to produce Charolais by compounding Charolais blood through successive generations formed the International Charolais Association,” reads the website. It further notes the American and International Associations merged into today’s American International Charolais Association. The website then reads, “In 1964, the Pan-American Charolais Association, whose registrations were based on performance rather than genetic content merged into AICA. Three years later, the American Charbray Breeders Association merged with AICA, bringing all Charolais-based
breeds in the U.S. under the fold of a single breed registry.” AICA explains the Charolais breed is good for growth and uniformity. They also note they have superior natural liveweight gain for age, tremendous muscling and conformity. They are also easy to manage in terms of temperament and easy calving. Membership AICA explains for a regular active membership, Charolais producers can pay an initial fee of $125. Annual dues are $100 and billed every November of the following calendar year. As an active member, producers will also receive the Charolais Journal monthly. “The American International Junior Charolais Association (AIJCA) has separate membership and activities,” reads the website. “The AIJCA is a very active entity and spon-
The 2020 Final Sort
sors a Junior National Show and Leadership Conference every year. Juniors members are allowed to register cattle at member fee but do not have a vote regarding AICA business.” The website notes initial AIJCA membership fees are $30 and annual dues are $24. CharAdvantage On top of the traditional services offered by a breed association, including tracking pedigrees and providing expected progeny differences (EPD), the AICA also recently added their new feeder calf marketing opportunity, CharAdvantage. “CharAdvantage is an age, source and genetic certification program designed to add more value to Charolais-influenced feeder cattle,” reads AICA’s website. The website also notes by enrolling in the program, producers will receive source, age and genetic verification in the calf crop they are currently marketing. “By documenting this information, participants can add value for buyers seeking feeder cattle with a known background that can qualify for added marketing opportunities and programs,” states the website. There are two different tag options to enroll in the program, according to
the website. These include electronic identification (EID) tags as well as EID and visual tags. Once cattle are enrolled, producers will receive a certificate, which highlights several aspects of age, source and genetic components of the feeder cattle being offered. In addition to age, source and genetic verification, there are a few other elements included on the certificate, according to AICA. These include seedstock origin of the sires and dams, composite terminal sire index (TSI) score averages, TSI scores of AICA sires and dams of the feeder cattle, marbling indicators, marketing venues for feeder cattle, beef quality assurance certifications and additional health and management protocols for enrolled cattle. According to AICA, producers can also choose to enroll their cattle in a handful of other programs. These programs include Non-Hormone Treated Cattle, Verified Natural Beef and GAP 5-Step Animal Welfare. For more information on the AICA, visit charolaisusa. com.
