Oh, Those Victorians! E SEASONAL EXHIBITS

JANUARY: Beside the

Hearth

From the beginning of civilization to the mid-twentieth century, needlework skills were a practical and necessary part of most young girls’ educations. In the Victorian era, more manufactured goods became available, and those practical skills became a way for girls and women to express their creativity.

Victorians valued things that were aesthetically beautiful, so making crazy quilts from scraps of satin and velvet and embroidering pillows and samplers were popular pastimes.

FEBRUARY:

Flirting with Flowers and Fans

Long before the invention of cell phones, the Victorians had their own ways to send clandestine messages and flirt across crowded ballrooms. Stop in and learn more about the Victorians’ secret language of flowers and fans.

MARCH:

Base Ball in the Victorian Era

How was the game of base ball different in the Victorian era? Well, for one thing, the name of the game was two words! Base ball evolved from other sports like rounders and town ball and it grew popular nationwide during the Civil War. The Cincinnati Reds formed the first professional team in 1869. Though the game is very different now, there are teams nationwide that still play by “vintage rules.”

The Aesthetic Movement in Children’s Clothing

Victorian fashions were all about extremes. We think of enormous hoopskirts and tight corsets for ladies, and little girls often dressed the same as their mothers.

The aesthetic movement in children’s clothing, strongly influenced by children’s author and illustrator Kate Greenaway, advocated for loose clothing for little girls so they’d be free to run, jump, and climb trees.

WYLIE PARKS

648 Acres of Parkland and Open Space

In those parks, you’ll find 17.8 miles of trails, 19 playgrounds, 11 pavilions available for reservation, soccer fields, baseball fields, football fields, a nine-hole disc golf course, a cricket pitch, and much more. Over the next few years, the Parks and Recreation Department plans to continue implementation of the 2012 Trails Master Plan, which will increase the miles of trail in Wylie to better connect you with your community. www.WylieTexas.gov/Parks

EUREKA PARK

351 RUTHERFORD AVENUE

The playground at Eureka Park is definitely a site to see. The vibrant blue colors, climbers, and slides make this structure a real community gem. The playground also offers a spinner and off-structure climber, so that not all the fun is had on the play structure. In the spring of 2019, the Parks and Recreation Department installed a new two-bay swing set, which features an ADA-accessible swing accompanied by a toddler swing. With a picnic pavilion, basketball court, cooking grills, and picnic stations along the half-mile walking trail, this park has something for everyone.

KIRBY PARK

300

MASTERS AVENUE

Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood in central Wylie, Kirby Park is the City’s smallest developed park. In the spring of 2020, the Parks and Recreation Department installed a new modular playground with several slides, climbers, and shade structures. This new playground also has a merrygo-round, seesaw, and a two-bay swing set, which includes two toddler swings. In addition to the playground, this park features massive shade trees, picnic tables, and BBQ grills, which all make this little park deliver a big value for outdoor recreation. This is a perfect spot to recharge your batteries in the heart of the City, so be sure to bring out your family and friends to visit Kirby Park.
