E Oh, Those Victorians! FALL EXHIBITS E NEW TOPICS + OLD FAVORITES

OCTOBER 9–NOVEMBER 5

Mourning Customs Across Cultures The Victorians’ preoccupation with death, séances, and spirits stemmed from several sources: Queen Victoria’s decades-long mourning for her husband, Prince Albert; the devastating effects of the American Civil War; and advances in communication technology that made the prospect of contacting departed spirits seem more plausible.

NEW!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Author Washington Irving (1783-1859) became an international celebrity in the years following the American Revolution. His most famous short stories, Rip Van Winkle (1819) and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820), are based on oral traditions, ancient folklore, and Gothic themes that became staples in later Victorian literature. Explore the contrast between the Victorians’ often morbid approach to death and the celebrations and traditions of Día de los Muertos, a holiday that has been celebrated in Latin cultures for more than three thousand years.

Delve into the oft-told tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman, and explore how The Legend of Sleepy Hollow became an intrinsic part of Halloween in America.

NOVEMBER 19–JANUARY 6

The Victorian Origins of Christmas Traditions When did Christmas trees first become popular? What’s the deal with mistletoe and hanging up stockings? What does Santa Claus really look like? Many of our Christmas traditions were made popular by the Victorians–of course! Come visit and learn more.
