elcome to the second edition of our annual magazine, The Dove.

I hope that you enjoy reading news from School as well as a wide variety of features across our alumnae community. Pippa Bagnall BA RN is the subject of our main feature, The Interview; I am sure you will find interesting her reflections on her life and career post-Wycombe.

While the events of the last year continue to affect us all, I have been touched by the words and acts of support which our Seniors have offered the School and each other.

Due to the restrictions placed upon us by the pandemic we have been unable to host Seniors at School, but I have had the great pleasure of seeing a large number of alumnae and their families at our virtual events over the past year.

I would much rather have had the opportunity to meet you in person, but online events have proved a worthy second best. I am delighted that the innovative approach of our Seniors’ Office has enabled you to stay connected in a variety of ways. The online Seniors’ Carol Service, which was attended by over 600 alumnae and their families was a real highlight.

In October 2020 we launched a new Seniors’ Mentoring Programme for our Sixth Form. This scheme has been very well-received by pupils, parents and alumnae alike and we plan to build on its success by expanding the scheme to a greater number of pupils next year. You can read more about this on page 13.

I am delighted that the innovative approach of our Seniors’ Office has enabled you to stay connected in a variety of ways.

We were thrilled that many Seniors have contributed to other activities this year, including our LVI university advice sessions, the annual Management Conference and Career Spotlight talks. Thank you very much to those of you who have given your time in this way and shared

valuable insights which will prove helpful to our pupils as they navigate their future life and career decisions.

We are extremely proud of our global community of Seniors and, in partnership with the Wycombe Abbey Hong Kong Foundation, we are delighted to have launched a newsletter for Seniors based in China, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. You can read this publication here.

As you know, we will be celebrating our 125th anniversary from September 2021, and we are looking forward to an exciting programme of events and activities which will bring our community together in celebration of the School’s foundation in the coming year. I very much hope that you will be able to join us on one of these occasions.

We were thrilled to see so many Seniors and their families from all around the world log on and attend our series of virtual events this year.

These have ranged from a fully virtual Seniors’ Carol Service, to a ‘cook-along’ with our Executive Head Chef, Youcef Kaidi.

We are proud to celebrate the broad diversity of our Seniors’ community.

A Collaboration between Schools

W

ycombe Abbey was delighted to collaborate this past year with Wycombe Abbey Changzhou, China and Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong for both a Digital Music Concert and Digital Art Exhibition showcasing the breadth of pupil talent across all three schools.

Digital Music Concert On Friday 21 May the Seniors’ Office was delighted to host alumnae, staff and parents for our first-ever Digital Music Concert - a collaboration between pupils in Wycombe Abbey UK and Wycombe Abbey Changzhou, China.

10 pupils performed across the concert, playing pieces on both the violin and piano by composers such as Beethoven, Bloch, Rachmaninov, Chopin, Bach, Franck and Moscheles.

We are thrilled to share the full Digital Music Concert with you.

Digital Art Exhibition In March 2021, pupils at Wycombe Abbey, Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong and Wycombe Abbey School, Changzhou came together to present the Schools’ first ever collaborative digital Art Exhibition.

Pupils from UIII to UIV explored the theme ‘East meets West’ through a variety of creative processes including drawing, painting, printmaking and textiles. You can view the 3D virtual exhibition here:

uring the pandemic, Senior, Pippa Bagnall (C127), became the Department of Health and Social Care Lead for Mass Testing for Covid-19 in Schools and Colleges. Pippa has worked closely with the Secretaries of State for Health and Education and senior academics and scientists, providing briefings for the Prime Minister and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) committee.

I have worked closely with the Department for Education and Public Health England. Self-nominating intrepid Head Teachers helped shape the pilot testing programme, evaluate the learnings and outcomes, and contributed to reports submitted to the Secretaries of State for Health and Education. The pace was relentless and with collaboration and shared dedication we worked around the clock. Team work at its very best.

School leaders were at the receiving end of these plans. It required hours of planning, preparation, consultation, communication and reorganisation of teaching timetables. Consent forms were collected, PPE deliveries received, school halls transformed and the workforce trained. The disruption of mass testing was considerable but it worked. When schools reopened in March 2021 they were ready to roll out mass testing across the UK.

Working in the political arena is competitive, tense and fast moving. I approached roles with impartiality, knowledge and experience and avoided conflict as much as possible. It can be exciting and frustrating at the same time. I adopted the cardinal values of prudence, temperance, justice and fortitude (resilience) which I learnt about at both Wycombe Abbey and The Nightingale School of Nursing.

The most outstanding experience was observing the way school leaders responded to the pandemic.

Have there been any particularly challenging moments in your role during the pandemic? What have been among the most interesting experiences?

What inspired you to work within Healthcare policy and reform?

Every day was a challenge. I was working in an environment where there was no guide book. Each morning’s meetings were influenced by the latest statistics and scientific knowledge; policy decisions were made quickly and people were anxious about dealing with the unknown.

I am driven by making a positive contribution to people’s lives. I have worked closely with homeless organisations; shaping the Mayor of London’s strategy to end homelessness in the capital city, and also being Chair of the Department of Health’s steering group “Find and Treat” initiative, which took mobile x-ray units to hostels

The most outstanding experience was observing the way school leaders responded to the pandemic. They faced a clinical pandemic sweeping through their education system; lockdowns created challenges on a scale never known before. The dedication and achievements have been phenomenal.

What has been your proudest professional achievement to date?

Professionally, my proudest moment was being awarded the badge of the Florence Nightingale School, St Thomas’.

I have taken my brooch round the world me; this achievement was the launch pad for a wonderful career.

Do you have any advice for Seniors or pupils looking to embark upon a career in your field?

The image of Nursing can suffer from outdated perceptions.

However, it offers multiple opportunities from a variety of clinical specialities, teaching and research to leadership and political activities.

Compassion and energy are essential. It has been the most rewarding career. I have met amazing people, helped them through loss and grief, celebrated recovery and travelled the world.

I would be more than willing to meet with individuals and groups to give insights into Nursing today and to answer questions for those contemplating a career in Nursing.

The Badge of the Florence Nightingale School, St. Thomas’ Designed on the pointed cross of the Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. The four arms symbolise the Cardinal Values of prudence, temperance, justice and fortitude, the eight points represent the Beatitudes. The four arms of the cross are the coat of arms for St Thomas’, a Tudor rose, fleurs de lis and the shield with the sword of St Paul. In the centre is a relief of the head of Florence Nightingale with the words “Schola Sancti Thomae”.

360 Tour of Wycombe Abbey During this extended year of remote provision for all within the Wycombe Abbey community, we have sadly been unable to host Seniors on-site for the traditional gatherings that would usually take place.

Aiming High!

We are proud of our pupils’ achievements in national and international competitions.

Please see below a selection of some of the girls’ contributions this year.

Sixth Former Wins Prestigious Prince Philip Scholarship Wing Lam (UVI) was awarded the Prince Philip Scholarship offered by the Friends of Cambridge University in Hong Kong. Wing Lam joins a small READ MORE and select group of Wycombe Abbey pupils who have been awarded the scholarship since its inception in 1982.

Success at the Industrial Cadets Bronze Award Competition Pupils from UIV took part in the Bronze Industrial Cadets Award, impressing judges READ MORE with their written reports, teamwork and video presentations. The girls won awards for Best STEM solution and Best Overall Project.

Greenpower Race at the Bedford Auto Drome Following some swift organisation and a concentrated effort to get the READ MORE cars race-ready, seven pupils raced our two electric cars, Phoenix and Sprocket Rocket, in the F24 and F24+ races at Bedford Auto Drome in April. The cars finished a very creditable 9th and 10th place out of the 20 starters and the teams are now setting their sights on the Finals at Silverstone.

Literary Winners Writing is a powerful tool and we are pleased that it is empowering our girls to contemplate and question topics of global significance. This past year, two Sixth Formers have come first place in prestigious competitions: Izzy (UVI) won the Chalfont St Giles Literary Competition writing a blog answering the question: “The Mayflower sailed to READ MORE America 400 years ago, taking the Pilgrim Fathers who were escaping persecution.

Today, asylum seekers are leaving the Middle East to try and make a new life in Europe.

Imagine you are escaping from persecution and write a blog about your escape”.

Diana (LVI) penned an entry for the Supreme Court writing competition where her winning essay explored whether the law has READ MORE reached a fair balance between protecting the rights of individuals whilst still safeguarding society against crime and terrorism was judged to have won first prize.

Sophie provided helpful advice, advocating for being a yes person and taking all opportunities that come her way. She stressed the importance of taking an interest in extracurricular activities whilst at school that can demonstrate the personal qualities one has to offer.

he Wycombe Abbey Careers Department regularly host Careers Spotlight seminars with an aim to give pupils an insight into different careers which are open to them once they leave education. In February 2021, the School hosted Senior, Sophie Odenthal, to talk to the girls about her life in the Civil Service.

Pupils were able to learn a great deal about how fulfilling this career could be as Sophie explained her involvement in the big issues of the day, even as someone in a junior role. The girls also saw a glimpse of what the work environment in the Civil Service is like and its emphasis on work-life balance and personal development.

Thank you to Sophie for giving her time in this way and for sharing her fascinating experiences with the girls.

Superhero Teacher donates plasma to help fight Covid-19 Since May 2020, Wycombe Abbey Head of Biology and Psychology, Mrs Lizzi Wallace, has been donating plasma to the NHS to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic. She has been recognised as one of the UK’s most prolific plasma donors and was featured in an interview with ITV news, being named a ‘Superhero Teacher’!

Wycombe Abbey wins Award for Pioneering Sixth Form Leadership Programme

W

e were delighted to announce that Wycombe Abbey won the Creativity Award at the 2021 TES Independent School Awards, which were held virtually on Friday 30 April.

The award was given in recognition of our Sixth Form Enrichment Programme, The Carrington Award, which is the result of a two-year research project undertaken by staff to provide a unique experience for pupils aged 16 – 18.

The Carrington Award programme is tailored and designed to reflect the particular needs of Wycombe Abbey pupils; their high potential and their global outlook. The programme develops skills across four strands: leadership, responsibility and global thinking; confidence and self-reliance; creativity and vision; and critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. In just two years this programme has been exceedingly well-received by pupils and parents alike. Judges were particularly impressed by the School’s use of transmedia storytelling, using a variety of media to immerse pupils in a narrative. Leadership skills are further developed through a two-day Leadership Summit with the Royal

Grammar School, High Wycombe and the Award also forms a part of the School’s outreach programme with three local state schools taking part in some events.

Jo Duncan, Headmistress said: “Wycombe Abbey is well known for its academic achievements, but to be recognised for creativity is very special. A lot of work has gone into the Carrington Award, it’s something that helps our pupils be future focussed. We’re continuing to improve the Award and have recently introduced electives, to really use our staff expertise. This award is all about developing skills and knowledge for the future.”

We are also pleased to announce that Wycombe Abbey has been shortlisted for an Independent School of the Year award for International Student Experience. We aim to make a home from home for our pupils and are pleased the team has been recognised. The judges will meet in September to choose the finalists ahead of the winners being announced in October.

The Seniors’ Mentoring Programme

T

he Seniors’ Mentoring Programme launched in October 2020 in support of the Carrington Award Programme. In its inaugural year, the programme has been exceptionally well-received by pupils, parents and Seniors resulting in over 150 alumnae signed up to the programme.

The aim of the Seniors’ mentoring programme, which took place virtually this year, was to provide the opportunity for current pupils to connect with alumnae around the world, utilising the advice and experiences from women at all stages of their career. Mentors offered a diverse set of experiences gained from careers within industries ranging from engineering, medicine, performing arts, science, law and digital communications.

One of our Mentors, Dame Sue Carr, Lady Justice of Appeal (C151) commented “I have learnt a huge amount from my mentees and have got so much out of this programme. It has really lifted our hearts, particularly during the time of a pandemic. The mentoring programme has provided a fantastic opportunity to stay in touch with the School.”

Due to the popularity of the programme among pupils and Seniors, we have been able to develop two additional branches of the Mentoring Programme; one working with the Diversity and Inclusion Pupil Committee; the second with the Tycoon Enterprise programme providing business mentors to guide Lower Sixth pupils through the development and growth of their start-up businesses.

The future is exciting for the development of alumnae mentoring and we look forward to extending this programme to more pupils and Seniors next year.

From Junior House…

U

pon arriving at a new school there is always a great deal to learn: from finding your way around to knowing where to store your outdoor shoes and who your teachers are. The pandemic only increased this logistical complexity for our Upper Three this year. It has been wonderful to see how quickly the girls rose to the challenge, honing their organisational skills and working on their laptops with increased independence.

Between class lessons and extras, Upper Three have been involved in a huge variety of sports over the year. From trampolining to lacrosse and fencing, many have been trying new sports for the first time, making the most of the School’s excellent facilities.

Weekends at Wycombe have always been a highlight, especially on Closed Weekends. Even though there were restrictions in place, the girls have fully participated in the fantastic array of activities that have been available to them.

Particular highlights include a Harry Potter-themed evening, laser tag, and a fabulous Bonfire Night fireworks display.

Without a doubt however, the roller disco was the absolute House-favourite and it was great to see everyone whizz euphorically around the Sports Hall.

The girls’ start at Wycombe Abbey may have been atypical, but its success has been a real testament to their flexibility and spirit. As they now move into the Lower Four, we look forward to seeing them flourish even further in their Senior Boarding Houses.

…to Clarence Leaver We were delighted to give our Upper Sixth a send-off they would remember during the annual Clarence Leavers’ Ceremony at the end of May. The girls attended a service led by School Chaplain, Reverend Penny Nash, received special gifts, and sat down to a formal dinner with staff to celebrate the end of their time at School.

We are immensely proud of these girls and all their achievements over the last seven years. We wish them the very best of luck in their next adventure!

But it is not quite goodbye, they will always remain part of the Wycombe Abbey community as members of the Wycombe Abbey alumnae network. As part of their induction into this community of over 4000 women across the globe, they were given a welcome pack that included their Circle number and a very special Wycombe Abbey Seniors teddy.

#WycombeWomen: Jackie Forster

S

uccessful news reporter and actress, Jackie Forster (1926-1998), became one of Britain’s leading lesbian rights activists in the 1960s. She was known as a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community and Jackie’s courage in coming out made her a role model to thousands.

At the age of six, Jackie travelled from her home in British India to attend Wycombe Abbey, as her father was a colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps. After leaving School, Jackie became an actress and developed a successful career as a TV presenter and news reporter under her maiden name of Jacqueline Mackenzie. Jackie was known for her lively delivery and sharp wit, making her a TV favourite with producers and viewers alike. She went on to win the Prix d’Italia in 1956 for her coverage of Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly’s wedding.

From 1992 until her death in 1998, Jackie was an active member of the Lesbian Archive and Information Centre Management Committee, and in 1997 a BBC film crew visited the archive to film a programme about her life, as part of The Day That Changed My Life documentary series.

In 2017, Google Doodle replaced its logo with a tribute to Jackie Forster on what would have been her 91st birthday. The illustration showed Jackie

standing in front of a Venn diagram, in one circle was a newsroom and camera, in the other a gay rights march with campaigners holding ‘equality’ placards symbolising her two most important aspects of her life.

Wycombe Abbey is very proud to recognise Jackie as a member of its Seniors community. Jackie was a brave woman who helped pave the way for future campaigning for equal rights and recognition of women.

In 1969, Jackie came out publicly and joined the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, where she later served on its Executive Committee. As a committed activist, she walked proudly in the first-ever gay rights march in the UK in 1971 and co-founded Sappho a year later – a social group and one of the UK’s longest-running lesbian publications.

Following the success of Sappho, Jackie became a member of Greater London’s Women’s Committee. During this time, she was known for notably campaigning to help lesbians become mothers through artificial insemination.

Jo Hilditch (C147) J

o Hilditch is a fourth-generation farmer, mother and entrepreneur, as well as Chair of the Blackcurrant Foundation and the Herefordshire Agriculture Club and High Sheriff of Herefordshire. Jo has featured on BBC’s Countryfile and, in 2015, featured on Dragon’s Den, pitching her liquor company, British Cassis, for investment. After receiving three offers she declined and decided to go it alone.

Tell us about your company, White Heron Drinks.

What were your interests whilst at Wycombe Abbey?

White Heron Drinks is a small drinks company that I set up as a diversification from my farming business. In the main business we supply around seven million chickens for the supermarkets, blackcurrants for Ribena, cider apples for Bulmers and Aspall, an arable business, 60bed holiday let business, property development, environmental land management schemes, grassland, and woodland management. White Heron Drinks’ primary focus is on the artisanship of batch-made liqueurs and was a business I set up in which I could use my skills of public relations and marketing where my relationship would be directly with the consumer rather than where I supply a product into the commodity market. I started with British Cassis when I realised that there was a significant amount of annual fruit wastage. I thought I could at least use some of the excess, and so the business began.

I was a dilettante and loved everything.

I wasn’t brilliant at anything but could do it all perfectly well. Enough so that I could go out and play tennis on a summer evening, bridge at the weekends, Scottish dancing, play the piano, enjoy sewing and designing clothes and generally enjoy myself.

The heritage of the company lies around my farming background, the provenance of the product, the quality, deliciousness and Britishness of the product. There is no doubt that the branding has allowed us to get into prestigious markets like Waitrose, Fortnum and Mason, Harrods and Harvey Nichols.

I can’t say that I was the ideal academic candidate, but I was clever enough to do reasonably well but unfortunately too lazy to make a big effort with my A levels – consequently not going to university. For many years I regretted that, but now, I am not sure if that particular sliding door has been detrimental to my life.

The entrepreneurship was something that came along as I so valued my independence and created my own environment and discipline.

During your time at School, did you know that you wanted to follow in your family’s footsteps into entrepreneurship and business?

Frankly no. When I left School all I wanted to do was to get out into the world, find a job, get a boyfriend and live a little. Having been brought up in the sticks in a very rural life, and then meeting metropolitan people at School, I couldn’t wait to be in the town where there were pubs in walking distance, a job would pay for the life I wanted to lead. I worked to live rather than live to work. The entrepreneurship was something that came along as I so valued my independence and created my own environment and discipline. Later I did have a career in PR which was great training for life in understanding people and products better.

It was only when my brother died in a car accident that the opportunity came for me to come back to the farm. Whilst the tragedy took a long time to get over, the silver lining was that I could now really get my teeth into my career. With such a fabulous asset I knew that I could build on the base that my father had made and work the money that I could borrow to maximise the returns which I have continued to do over the last 25 years.

What were the most useful skills or advice that you received at Wycombe Abbey that have helped you during your career?

I think independent thought, critical thinking and even back in the 1980s, the confidence in being a woman. I have recently done a lot of presentations around women in business and I think the confidence that I gained from being at a school where the environment was one of pride in success has driven me on in much I have done.

Tell us about your time on Dragon’s Den, what was this experience like?

It made me find the discipline to write a business plan and develop a strategy which wasn’t something I’d really thought about before as I grew the business organically. The show is designed as entertainment and as long as you enter the Den with your eyes wide open and your preparation done, not much can go wrong. Turning down three offers was easy, they just weren’t good enough, and I knew that I had enough skills to make a success of the business without a small contribution.

Had I felt that one of the Dragons was really going to bring expertise to my particular field I would have accepted an offer, but only on my terms, not theirs.

So, a bit of acting and chewing my lip before a “no” was not that difficult.

What has been the most challenging thing you have faced? How did Wycombe Abbey help you prepare for this?

Probably being a working mother.

I love my children and balancing their needs and being a good mum whilst ensuring that the business ran smoothly with the opportunities to grow it, was sometimes difficult.

Although I know they would see me as a good role model, I hope that they won’t ever resent the time I spent away from them on a daily basis.

This year you generously offered your time on our Seniors mentoring programme to support current pupils, what inspired you to do this?

Young people are our future! They are adventurous in their thought and their lack of experience means that nothing has an agenda or necessarily an influence. However, as you grow older, I think you realise that humility is important and that you won’t always be right – these are good lessons, and I think the best realisation is that they will learn from their elders and that they will make mistakes along the way.

Admit when you are wrong and change direction if you come up against a roadblock. I think if you are a peopleperson like me, and a connector and entrepreneur helping others to see a similar path is always stimulating.

If I am honest, knowing that Wycombe Abbey is still one of the most recognised academic schools in the country, and also knowing that my school career was not one of the most successful, I wanted to come back and prove to myself that I was better than I thought (or perhaps the teachers thought I was) nearly 40 years ago. You can succeed when you find your confidence and dispel those limiting self-beliefs as I believe I have finally done - In Fide Vade rings very true.

In her role as High Sheriff of Herefordshire, Jo began hosting a podcast in 2020 entitled Bench Talk. The podcast shines a light on a cross-section of personalities from the country: celebrities, volunteers, entrepreneurs, frontline workers, and many more, learning about their work and role in the Herefordshire community. Julia Berkeley (C178)

J

ulia Berkeley was born in Burundi, Africa, where she inherited a passion for dance, song, travel and exploration from an early age. Following her time at Wycombe Abbey, she moved to the United States and attended Brown University, studying Mathematics and Physics. After her time in education she returned to London to pursue a career in graphic design where she started a job at Bell Wickham Associates in 1998. After three years, Julia visited Australia for a holiday. Little did she know that this place would become her home for the next 11 years. It is here that she discovered the healing arts of shamanism, energetic healing, counselling, flower essences and her passion for meditation.

In 2012, Julia moved to California where she studied to become a yoga teacher. Following this training she began sharing kirtan (a yogic chanting practice), subsequently recording two albums: Embody Love and Aham Prema. Julia is also an avid dancer and has created her own conscious movement course, Divine Motion.

What were your interests and passions as a pupil at Wycombe Abbey?

The classes I most enjoyed at School were Maths, Physics, Art and Piano.

Outside the classroom I spent a lot of time listening to music. I was also passionate about photography and adored spending time in the dark room.

A memory that stands out from those days is from the time of Confirmation.

We were taken on a retreat and I remember discovering contemplation and stillness and deeply loving it.

this, and other ways, he gave me the gift of finding the joy of piano playing which had not always been there.

What inspired you to go travelling?

What did you experience during this time?

In many ways I was running away from things when I decided to go travelling.

While I wasn’t conscious of it, in retrospect I think I was getting far away from my family and place of upbringing in order to find myself.

During those 11 years, I underwent some very big changes that began when I happened upon a transcendental meditation course.

Adopting that daily practice changed my whole orientation to life. I found myself less interested in partying, instead turning towards a path of healing and awakening.

It is lovely to look back and see how these threads have woven together to create the tapestry of my life’s journey.

The love of art and music flowered in later life through graphic design and sharing kirtan and dance. It seems that a seed was planted on the Confirmation retreat that connects to yoga and meditation. And perhaps less obvious, the thread of Maths and Physics has continued in my passion for exploring the nature of the universe through yoga.

When did you first discover yoga and what difference has this made to your life? Tell us about kirtan, dance, meditation and the journey behind where these passions stem from.

Did you know that you wanted to be a graphic designer whilst at School?

Yoga is a path to experiencing that at one’s core there is an unshakeable source of peace, joy and love. In being human and living life, we easily lose touch with it or never know that it’s there. I first consciously tasted this bliss through meditation and that set me on the journey of deepening into it through dance, kirtan and other yogic practices.

I didn’t know what graphic design was until I volunteered to help on my university’s newspaper! I fell completely in love with it and that lead me to take a three-month course at the neighbouring design school.

Did you have an inspiring teacher that made a difference to you whilst at School? Do you have a favourite memory of your time here?

I still remember some of the amazing stories about eccentric composers that Mr Petter would regale me with. In

I attended my first yoga asana class in my early 20s in London and have continued to practice. However, it was not until my 30s when I went to India for the first time that I really began to taste the bigger meaning of yoga.

Having the embodied discovery that the fulfilment I long for is already inside of me, not something I can reach by having the perfect body, partner or job, is very freeing. There are no words for the blessing of this in my life. I am so grateful to be able to support others in moving towards this discovery.

Tell us about how and why you developed your business. What has been your proudest moment and what has been the biggest benefit to you and the people you have shared these experiences with?

Rather than setting out to create a business I have quietly been following my desire to share my passions. It began with inviting people over to my house to learn to meditate. Then I got the message to share dance with people and created a course. In this way, I continued to follow the instructions as they came.

A highlight from these last few years was the release of my first kirtan album. Funnily enough I was not accepted in the choir at School when I auditioned and always believed that I couldn’t sing. So, to find myself on stage performing music that I had written to over 100 people was exhilarating and miraculous.

One of the greatest joys of this business is being able to empower others to find more joy, peace and connection in their lives.

What is next for you?

I am really excited to be offering a Back to Earth retreat in Mexico this November in one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to. And I am looking forward to the actual ‘official’ release of my second kirtan album Aham Prema (I Am Love).

Do it! Trust that what you truly love is what you’re meant to be doing.

Just take the first step and then the next one will reveal itself.

Scarlett Koller (C281) S

carlett Koller became a Systems Testbed Engineer within the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at NASA in 2019, and for the last two years has been working on the Mars 2020 Mission Systems Testbed, acting as one of the ‘stunt doubles’ on Earth.

After leaving Wycombe Abbey, Scarlett moved to the USA to study Aeronautics and Astronautics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 2016. Prior to her role at NASA, Scarlett worked on the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule and was involved in testing to ensure the capsule was safe for astronauts to travel into space.

Tell us more about your current role and the projects you have been involved in?

As a System Testbed Engineer, it is my job to test higher system-level behaviour of the spacecraft, in particular flight software logic.

Individual instruments and subsystems go through extensive testing, but when integrated into the full spacecraft system, interactions between systems are important to explore. I will be testing the capability of the Psyche flight computer to execute complex sequences of commands and assessing if the relevant requirements are met, and if they are not, what the consequences will be to the mission.

What influenced your decision to study Aeronautics at university and to follow a career in the Aerospace industry?

I first became interested in engineering as a career during a visit to CERN during my AS year at School. I was really drawn in by how engineers had actually done the work of designing such a huge collider and cooling huge numbers of superconducting magnets.

As a System Testbed Engineer, it is my job to test higher systemlevel behaviour of the spacecraft, in particular flight software logic.

When I started at MIT, I took an introductory course taught by an astronaut that really captured my imagination. Not only is space just incredibly cool, but I was really interested in the way my professor drew attention to the complicated interactions within tightly coupled aerospace systems. My interest only grew as I took more courses in aerodynamics, mechanics, propulsion and structures.

What has been the proudest moment in your career so far and your most challenging?

Perhaps one of the most exciting moments of my career was when we landed the Perseverance Rover on Mars in February 2021. At that point, I had spent two years testing the logic of the Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL) sequence. In particular, as a testbed engineer, I had spent a great deal of time developing anomalies to test the flight operations team’s ability to respond to issues during the landing.

As such, I was intimately familiar not only with the system, but possible ways it could go wrong. Being in the EDL “War Room” when the “Tango Delta Nominal” (Touchdown nominal) message came through was one of my proudest moments: when we realised that we had really, truly done it. It was absolutely surreal.

Of course, I did not get into aerospace engineering because it was easy, and my line of work comes with its share of challenges. I previously worked on the Crew Dragon capsule at SpaceX, and in particular focused on working with the NASA Commercial Crew staff to ensure that SpaceX’s design met NASA’s requirements per the contract.

I found that to be unexpectedly challenging as the differences in organisational cultures led to some communication issues. When people have vastly different risk stances, it is essential not only to have a good design but also to be able to convey

S E N I O R S S POT L I G H T it in a way that inspires confidence.

I had to leverage some of the technical communication skills I learned in a leadership program at MIT. It was a real lesson for me in the importance of communication and different interpretations of the same facts.

I am especially keen to see how the concept of green aviation will expand in the next decade.

What do you think the future looks like for Aeronautics and Astronautics?

It took me until university to really focus on aerospace engineering as the discipline I wanted to study. Even now, I am working on systems engineering, which is quite different from the propulsion engineering that I was especially keen on as a student. I would advise anyone to keep an open mind and avoid pigeon-holing themselves.

If you find yourself interested in something you had not expected, don’t be afraid to try something new.

Changing your mind about where you want to direct your career can be daunting, but it is important to regularly reassess what it is that interests you most and how you can go about doing that. Keeping open to new opportunities and new directions is a good way to ensure your career is as interesting as you can make it.

The trend in the last few decades has been that a lot of space development happens in the USA, but that is becoming less the case as start-ups around the world become competitive on the world stage as launch providers. The launch provider field is already shifting away from major government contractors to private enterprises. If those trends continue, combined with smaller and more agile satellite development, the space industry will become more commodified and globalised.

As for the aeronautical industry, there is a strong trend towards greening commercial aviation. An electric plane is much further away from being commercially viable than electric cars. As such, all sorts of efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of flight are being developed, including solar panels integrated into the airframe and even hydrogen-powered planes.

What advice would you give to current pupils at Wycombe Abbey interested in a similar career path?

Scarlett recently left NASA JPL to pursue two concurrent Master’s degrees at MIT as part of the Leaders in Global Operations programme, continuing to develop her skills in systems engineering and missions operation strategies, with a plan to return to the aerospace industry upon completion.

Exploring Science with Dyslexic Children and Teens Dr Diana Hudson has over 30 years’ classroom teaching experience. She has taught in top ranking schools in the UK in the state and private sectors. She has been Head of Biology, Head of Year and SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator).

She has also taught adults on Access programmes and first year medical students.

Three of her four children have Specific Learning Difficulties and they have now all negotiated their way successfully through university. Diana has a PhD in Zoology but admits to struggling at school. She was diagnosed as having dyslexia a few years ago.

She is now focusing on increasing teacher awareness of Specific Learning Difficulties and enabling them to provide the tailored support and encouragement that these students need to thrive.
