MICHEALS’ MEMOIRS March 2021 Update
Dear Friends and Family, Over the years, many things have changed in our lives. The work we do with Wycliffe, the places where we have lived and the size of our family have all changed. However, our affection for Papua New Guinea (PNG) where we lived and work for 15 years has not changed. It looms large in our hearts and mind as do the people we got to know there. Recently, we received news that the Father of Papua New Guinea, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare passed away in February. He was the first Prime Minister of the country when it became an independent country in 1975. During our time in Papua New Guinea he served as Prime Minister and was a dearly loved and respected statesman, who represented PNG well on the world stage. We send our sympathies and prayers to the people of PNG in the loss of their founder and national leader. He will long be remembered as a leader that helped PNG have 46 years of democracy and worked for the benefit of the people.

SUDEST BIBLE TRANSLATION WORK CONTINUES Since 2015 Mike and Thera have been working on an Old Testament project in the Sudest language that will likely not be the entire Old Testament, but an overview of the Old Testament with selected books and passages. Mike and Thera are now retired and living in Idaho and yet work remains to be done. Knowing that God’s Providential hand is in all things, so it has been with this project. Through technology, it has been possible for Mike and Thera to use the power of the internet and a software program called Paratext to continue their work. However, COVID impacted that as the village people had to remain in the village where there is no internet or regular phone or mail access.

Paratext has all the tools Bible translators need to do their work. Thus, with this tool, funds in hand to continue the project, translators to do the work, Bible translation can continue.

Alotau Sudest Island It had been many months since the Andersons heard from the local people and just recently, one man made it to the town of Alotau where SIL has a regional center with offices and housing. The plan now is for the translation team to relocate to Alotau for 4 - 6 months to finish the project. As you can imagine, that will take significant financial resources and readjustment to the Sudest families who would be involved. However, if that were to happen, the local Sudest translators can enter their work in Paratext and Mike and Thera can review the work to make sure the translation is accurate, clear and natural. 2|Page
