As our riding season seems to be very limited this time of year, almost non-existent, it becomes a sad time of year here at the TRMI World Headquarters. Some people park them after Labor Day weekend and don’t even think about riding them any longer this with cooler temperatures and more hazards this time of year. I know that we will keep trying to hang on to the ability to ride, weather considering, for as long as we can. It eventually ends up the same way every year though in that the temperatures get too cold, the roads become too dangerous, and the ability to clean off road debris and calcium brine diminishes. If you are still getting out and about, be very careful of the extra hazards this time of year. On top of slow moving agricultural equipment on the roads, sometimes they leave some nasty debris and mud all over the roads, especially this year with the amount of rain we have had all summer in some parts of the state. The animals sure like to be on the move in the fall as well, so you have to keep a keen eye out for them. One of the last hazards that seem to pop up this time of year is extra random debris on the roads. While Ag equipment drags gravel and sand onto the roads, if it is muddy they throw mud on the roadways, and for some reason it seems to be a time of year for people to drop random things on the roads. Car parts, garbage, and garden leftovers seem to be prevalent. At least the number of random shoes on the road or shoulder seems to be less in the fall than in the summer. We always know that riding season is officially here when we spot the first random single shoe on the side of the road. Anyway, ride safe this fall, and if not riding, get that thing checked over or get your winter projects started early!

forthcoming with those non-riding types of folks. That would drive me nuts to have to spend the holidays with people that only travel on four wheels! On that note about upcoming events, if you know of any CONFIRMED events for 2019, email them to Vernon@thunderroadsiowa. com. We try to keep the most comprehensive list of events anywhere in Iowa, and we ask your help to keep this going. I need the date, name of the event, and the starting location town. Get those to me as soon as dates and places are set and get them to me and then we will put them on the list.

No matter when you officially park it for the season or not, everyone seems to start looking forward to the winter and spring swap meets and bike shows. That is the only bit of comfort for Iowa bikers it seems like, that in just a couple short months, some gatherings will start to happen and we can get back to spending time with other bikers. I guess that we are fortunate enough to have biker relatives, so we don’t have to deal with the holiday hoopla that is

In this issue is the posting of the final month’s Tall Corn Run winners for the month of August, as well as the grand prize winners for the season. We would like to thank everyone that has supported the Tall Corn Run monthly this riding season, as well a giant thanks to the locations that donated the three grand prizes for this year. Carroll Cycle Center, JLM Shooters Supply, and J&P Cycles were gracious enough to make sure there were some cool prizes for the end of the year. We would also like to thank all of those that have participated the past few years. It has been a blast hosting this, and we think it did some great things to get some people out and about in new areas where they don’t normally ride. We are unsure of the future of the program at this point for a multitude of reasons, but appreciate everyone that has participated. Ride safe everyone!

Quote of the Month: “I spent all my money on motorcycles, guns, rock and roll music, whiskey and women…the rest I just wasted.” Unknown

On the Cover We did not get a chance to ride together as long this year, as we have in the past, but we did have a chance to swing by one of Pete’s haunts in Cedar Rapids, Edith Lucielle’s Bait Shack & Wing Depot on Mt Vernon Road for a couple of photos and a frosty beverage. It is a place with a cool vibe to take a shot of Pete, Dan, Graig, and Cameron from www.thebikerlawyers. com. These guys are truly “The Real Deal” Check them out at thebikerlawyers.com or call 877-209-9452 for any of your legal needs. 4 - TRMI OCTOBER 2018

You know how some of life’s best lessons are learned at unexpected times and in unexpected places? I had one of those learning moments recently in a porta-potty at a rally we were attending. Most porta-potties are un-lit, which makes utilizing them after dark a pretty sketchy operation if you’re a girl. But these porta-potties were up there in the Cadillac range of porta-potties because they were lit. Except when they were not lit, and this was one of those times. However, there was a bright light just outside the potties and I figured it might just send enough of its beams under the door for me to still find the necessary pieces of equipment (Toilet seat? Check! Toilet paper? Check!) So I went on in.

The National American Legion has sponsored a benefit motorcycle ride for going on 13 years now. This year it came across Iowa following the entire length of Highway 71 in western Iowa going north. It is called the American Legion Legacy Run. The riders, all legion members, get together to raise funds for college assistance for the children of U.S. military personnel killed in active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, as well as children of post 9/11 veterans who are 50 percent or more disabled. Last year’s Legacy Ride raised a record $1,224,653. It has raised over $1 million in each of the last four years. This year’s ride started in Hutchinson Kansas and traveled five states in five days. The ride started on Aug 19 and made stops in Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin before finishing up on Aug 23 at the Anoka Minnesota American Legion Post 102.

Audubon to take pictures. They had planned a stop at both Albert the Bull, a giant statue of a Hereford bull and a wreath laying ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial in front of the Audubon County Courthouse. With the rain, they were a good hour and a half behind schedule and had to cancel the planned activities in Audubon.

It was raining pretty good, so I waited along Highway 71 in Exira in my pickup truck, not knowing for sure how late they may be. When I saw them coming, I pulled up to the stop sign thinking with the Thunder Roads Magazine graphics on my truck they would see me and put a smile on their soaking faces. They roared by 427 bikes strong, with many waving. When the last support vehicle at the end went by, I followed them to Audubon. They pulled into the new truck stop and all filled up with gas. As I walked around (in the rain) talking with them and taking pictures, you could see their determination and commitment to this ride. I know there are a lot of people Monday morning, Aug 20, who would stay home or find the riders left Kansas City a motel or shelter on a day and stopped for lunch in like this. Not these bikers. Maryville, Missouri. The Spirits were high and they route that day included were having fun. I kind of a gas stop in Audubon felt like a puss for bringing and a one night stay in the pickup until a few, being Spencer, Iowa. Early that from other states, and seeing day they ran into rain, but I was with Thunder Roads rode all day anyway on Magazine would talk about wet pavement, rain, and drizzle. With myself just south of the Thunder Roads Magazine in their own states. Then I felt Audubon, I planned on picking up the ride and following to better about it. 14 - TRMI OCTOBER 2018

They all filled up with gas using the four pumps of 91 octane. One person manned the nozzles and they did not reset the pump between bikes keeping the dollar amount on one card so they could get 427 bikes filled quicker. They restaged after a cup of coffee and a rest room break. The lead bike laid a wreath at the memorial in front of the Courthouse. Standing there feeling emotional, they all rode by and headed north in the rain. See you on down the road. Ben Simpson

I mentioned the weather and yes, Mother Nature in October can be fickle bitch for sure, but there are those days that the month brings that are simply STUNNING and some of the best days of the year. Usually the bugs aren’t as bad, the sky is an amazing hue of blue, the sun can still be very warm and the colors that explode are breathtaking. TRMI OCTOBER 2018 - 23

It’s October, and that makes me excited! No, it’s not because of the incessant streaming of pumpkin spice drivel that every coffeehouse from here to hell is spewing…I am excited because despite the fact that the coming of fall means the close of another riding season is fast approaching, the fact remains that Fall in Iowa is flat out the most beautiful time of the year. Catching Iowa’s fall foliage in its full, vibrant radiance is something that always takes my breath away…that’s why if you have never been to northeastern Iowa to the area affectionately known as “Little Switzerland” to see the amazing autumn landscape, then quite frankly you have never really experienced THE leaf ride to remember. So that being said, fuel up the bike, put on some cow hide, and pack your camera to capture the most amazing views you will find this time of year! Peak times for fall foliage viewing are usually anywhere from early-to-mid-October. That’s when the season puts on its best show with the maples and elms ablaze in reds, and contrasting intense yellows and purples of the ash trees. You will find every conceivable hue along the River Bluffs Scenic Byway, which includes the towns of Luxemburg, Guttenburg, Elkader, Garnavillo, Lansing, and McGregor. The River Bluffs Scenic Byway is a 109-mile route through Fayette and Clayton Counties, that features limestone bluffs, caves, sinkholes, springs, and streams. This route also happens to be recognized as the second most scenic state byway in Iowa, due to the extensive hardwood forests, native prairies, wetlands, cold water trout streams, and spectacular views. Because it was bypassed by the last glacier thought to have scraped and ironed out much of Iowa’s land, this area of the state is distinctive and diverse with looming bluffs, rolling valleys, and a landscape that couldn’t have been more beautiful were it painted by

24 - TRMI OCTOBER 2018

Leonardo Da Vinci himself. The unique geology of the area has made this route a soughtafter destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts alike. The region is dotted with parks, nature centers, fishing spots, campgrounds, trails and water access points. The also features one of the largest recreation areas in the state, Volga River Recreation Area. If fish is your thing, aquatic life can be seen at the Big Springs Trout Hatchery and the Guttenberg Aquarium and Fish Management Area. Be sure to gaze the countryside while cruising the byway and you are sure to catch a glimpse of the past. The area has plenty of historical sites to captivate your interest and spark a desire to learn about the area’s culture. If you have scheduled your trip more than a just a short, day visit be sure to plan a visit to Motor Mill Historic Park of Montauk, or atop to see where the first successful gasoline tractor engine was built. Another unique attraction is at the Union Sunday School, where visitors can attend a concert featuring the largest Kimball organ in the country. Along the byway are 13 communities each rich in cultural heritage, offering their own stories, festivals, and places to explore. Experience the mesmerizing view of Pikes Peak State Park, conquer the four-acre corn maze in Elgin, devour the world’s largest tenderloin in St. Olaf, discover the American Indian burial mounds in the shape of a bear at Iowa’s Effigy Mounds, or attend the town of Guttenberg’s annual German Fest. If you are only planning for a day, the byway can be traveled in a mere four hours, but this area has so much to offer, you are going to want to stick around longer. The River Bluffs Scenic Byway in northeastern Iowa may just be Iowa’s answer to Pennsylvania’s Fall Foliage Tours…and what an impressive reply it is! Melanie J Schwarte

My husband h b d & I jjoined i d our llocall post iin Marshalltown h ll iin anticipation of being a greater part of our community AND becoming members of the American Legion Riders. We have always rode motorcycles, however now our riding would be for helping our veterans, neighbors & community. Within the Riders we have met some really good friends, brothers & sisters.

This hi year the h Riders id sponsored the 1st Annual “Hero’s Ride” to raise funds for First Responders. Hopefully, this event will grow into an annual success!

The Riders are always looking for a project and never need to look far. Our meetings are monthly on Saturday mornings, in hope of a ride & meal to follow.

The fall “Stand Down” is always very humbling as to what the American Legion Riders work so hard to achieve, ASSISTANCE FOR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES. During this weekend long event veterans can get medical/dental exams, haircuts, 3 hot meals daily, clothing, hot showers, sleeping bags and information on local assistance, along with any other need the Riders can provide.

In the winter months, The Riders put on a monthly homemade meal fundraiser, to keep funds growing for summer projects. Always nice to see the Iowa Veterans Home bring a bus load of local veterans, to join in. It’s easy to see the enjoyment on their faces!

The membership has helped out so many people/veterans in our community ranging from gift cards, batteries for an electric wheelchair, care packages for local active soldiers, financial assistance and so much more.

Some of the Veterans are very familiar with our members from monthly BINGO at IVH. Recently we had 97 veterans join in for BINGO! Prizes and money are always well received. Herschel Edwards & Nick Salasek, along with the Rider’s membership have an annual fundraiser, “Paws & Effect.” This event raises money to train service dogs for veterans in need. So much work, planning & networking with our community goes into this event. All the members, bikes, the actual ride, the celebration & finally see the outcome of a well deserving veteran get a service dog to help with daily living. The Riders also assist with “Ride for Time” to raise money for under/non insured women and men for early detection of breast cancer. These turnouts are amazing, with a stop at IVH. These veterans LOVE to see all the bikes and visit with the Riders. 28 - TRMI OCTOBER 2018

We also had a couple in our membership in need of assistance during a life threatening medical emergency. Post 46, without hesitation, jumped right in to provide emotional & financial assistance to our sister & brother. There were a lot of hugs & tears upon their return to Post 46! The members of the American Legion Riders Post 46 are wonderful, caring people, always providing assistance to our veterans, active soldiers, surrounding Posts and so much more that hasn’t been mentioned. Thank you Post 46 for all your compassion and hard work. It’s an honor and privilege to be a small part. Wayne & Tonya’ Warnell

Bombshell b h ll bl blondes, d bbangin’ i bbrunettes, and d rebel b l redheads, dh d are just a few of the many shades of sultry women you will see featured in Natanic’s tastefully sexy annual Pin-up calendar put on by my good friend, the devilishly handsome Nate Ullrich. (stop by www.Natanic.com to snag a copy!) His calendar not only showcases women hot enough to melt anyone’s popsicle, but it also combines Nates love for vintage motorcycles. Sounds pretty kick ass right? You can’t go wrong with babes and bikes. Now I could put on a weak argument about how rough Nate’s life is, but he really is out there living every man’s dream. Hell, if I were traveling the country, constantly surrounded by vintage motorcycles and stunning locations, all while getting to capture iconic photos of breathtaking women in lingerie, I’d smile just as much as Nate does! Actually now that I think about it, one of the first things I learned about Nate is that it is physically impossible not to smile when he’s around. He

just has this wonderful aura about him that makes posing in your knickers so much FUN! I remember shooting with Nate for the first time, we had never met prior, and even though I had dabbled into some Pin-up modeling, I really was just starting my modeling career. However, Nate and I clicked instantly, and by the end of the shoot we not only had countless snapshots of me flipping the camera the bird from Nate making me laugh so hard, but we walked away with a wonderful friendship. I have shot with Nate multiple times since, and each time is an even better experience. Nate is the ideal photographer, he is passionate, organized, driven, creative beyond measure, humble, and truly caring. Although his camera skills are impressive, I favor being the little bombshell in front of the lens, it really is its own treat, especially for me. I grew up with the need for speed, and a love for anything with a motor. So naturally, when Nate approached me asking how I felt about modeling a sick vintage motorcycle my first thought was “Hell yeah! Sign me up!” Having the opportunity to be a Natanic’s Pin-Ups model two years in a row has been nothing short of amazing. I have learned so much, and met so many amazing people along the way. I never would have thought one Facebook message would have impacted my life so much! I want any woman out there who is even slightly curious about what it takes to be “that woman” to reach out to Nate. When women shoot with Nate they are guaranteed to adopt a new found confidence they didn’t know they had, friendships they never expected, and opportunities they might not have gotten without Nate!! I can promise that once you get a taste, you will be back for more, just like the people who flock to get their calendars year after year! Serena - Natanic’s Pin-ups Miss January 2018 and May 2019

everything to make your mouth water. We started our meal with a basket of beer battered cheese balls. Perfectly cooked to golden gooey perfection, these little nuggets are little crumbles from heaven. While munching on the appetizer, we noticed that the menu offered dine in options as well as a take away menu, anything from salad to enormous platters that allow even the completely indecisive to try a little of nearly everything they have to offer. When the waitress pinned us down and we were forced to make our choices, it transpired as follows…

Whatcha Smokin’ BBQ & Brew 403 Iowa Avenue Luther, Iowa (515) 257 7490 Whatchasmokinbbq.com Facebook: watchasmokinbbq+brew Open Daily 11 am -9 pm You might ask yourself what could possibly be better than a sunny day out on two wheels with friends and a couple of stops for cold drinks. Well I’ll tell you what puts the ‘ol icing on my cake…or in this case maybe it’s the pork in my bun, no wait…the meat on my bone. Oh, never mind. The point is, if you like barbeque and you haven’t been to this joint yet, then you are in for a real treat. We met up with our good friends Dick and Joni (you may have seen them grace the Thunder Cam pages before) and tore up as much pavement as a one-day race around the state would allow. Now Dick and Joni seem to find the random bantering between Vernon and I entertaining for some reason, and we think that they are pretty damn fantastic as well, so when we can get time together we like to make good use of it. This trip out, we decided to swing through Luther and darken the doors of TRMI supporter, Whatcha Smokin’ BBQ & Brew. We pulled in after the lunch hour, but still found the place bustling with patrons in search of smoky goodness. Wait staff was quick and attentive despite the crowd, and before long we grabbed a cold one and took a seat in the “outdoor” dining area. This area has 2 walls constructed of large overhead doors that just happened to be open during our visit. The whole place has a cool “industrial’ vibe to it. In no time at all we began perusing the menu. From familiar appetizers and down-home side dishes to unique dessert creations, this menu includes 30 - TRMI OCTOBER 2018

Dick ordered the Baby Back Dinner, opting for the half rack of ribs, as the meal also comes equipped with 2 side dishes, Texas toast, and corn bread. The cornbread was accompanied by a bit of sweet honey butter. Dick chose to double up on the coleslaw for his duo of sides. The ribs were flavorful and tender, and the serving was more than ample. Vernon elected to order the 2 Meat Pit Master Plate (it is available with 1, 2, or 3 meats). This meal also comes with the Texas toast and cornbread, as well as 2 side dishes. Meat options for this meal include thick cut Iowa loin, pulled chicken, double-smoked sausage, or pulled pork. Vernon opted for the Iowa pork loin and the double-smoked sausage to join his campground beans and potato salad at the table. The pork loin was juicy and delicious, and the double-smoked sausage was to die for. We later noted that the sausage is also available in a sandwich form…and yes, we considered purchasing one “to go” for later. The potato salad was true to its name, “Mom’s Potato Salad” as it had tender chunks of potato and a subtle hint of mustard in the dressing. The campground beans were also delicious, slightly sweet, slightly smoky.

I chose to try out the Iowa Cheese Steak with the secret spot fries. The sandwich was a wonderful mingling of smoked meats including chicken, pork, and brisket, all topped with onions and peppers and a little melted swiss cheese piled up on a fresh roll. The secret spot fries were house cut, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and seasoned with the

boiled egg, cheese and crunchy croutons. Joni said that the amazing ranch dressing just took the salad over the top. This salad was definitely never intended to reside on a plate as a side…. more than a meal for sure! With friendly staff, great food, and cold drinks we could have occupied our table for hours to come, but the road was calling our names and we decided to get a few more miles in before calling it a day. This may have been our first visit to Whatcha Smokin’, but it definitely won’t be our last. If you haven’t checked it out yet, do so soon and tell them TRMI sent you! Whatcha Smokin’ house rub. Joni refused to be the picture of gluttony like the rest of our table, and she ordered “That Good Salad” with ranch as her choice of dressing. While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the drunk calmly stated, “You must be single.” The woman was a bit startled by this proclamation, but she was intrigued by the derelict’s intuition, since she was indeed single. She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selections that could have tipped off the drunk to her marital status. Curiosity getting the better of her, she said “Well, you know what, you’re absolutely correct, but how on earth did you know that?” The drunk replied, “Cause you’re ugly.” What’s five miles long and has an IQ of forty? A stripper parade. A man brought a very limp dog into the veterinary clinic. As he lay the dog on the table, the doctor pulled out his stethoscope, placing the receptor on the dog’s chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said, “I’m sorry, but your dog has passed away.” “What?” screamed the man. “How can you tell? You haven’t done any testing on him or anything. I want another opinion!” With that, the vet turned and left the room. In a few moments, he returned with a Labrador retriever. The Retriever went right to work, checking the poor dead dog out thoroughly. After a considerable amount of sniffing, the Retriever sadly shook his head and said “Bark”. The veterinarian then took the Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

A newlywed couple was spending their honeymoon in a remote log cabin resort way up the mountains. They had registered on Saturday and they had not been seen for 5 days. An elderly couple ran the resort, and they were getting concerned about the welfare of these newlyweds. The old man decided to go and see if they were all right. He knocked on the door of the cabin and a weak voice from inside answered. The old man asked if they were OK. “Yes, we’re fine. We’re living on the fruits of love”. The old man replied, “I thought so...would you mind not throwing the peelings out the window...they’re choking my ducks!” A guy is outside in his front yard attempting to fly a kite with his son. Every time the kite gets up in the air, it comes crashing down. After this goes on for a while, his wife sticks her head out the front door and yells, “You need more tail.” The guy turns to his son and says, “Son, I never will understand women. I just told her an hour ago I needed more tail, and she told me to go fly a kite!” A Native American walks into a bar with a bag of buffalo manure in one hand and a shotgun in the other. He walks to the bar and orders a cup of coffee. He drinks the coffee in one gulp, throws the bag in the air, shoots it with the shotgun and walks out. The next day he walks into the same bar and orders a cup of coffee. He drinks the coffee in one gulp, throws the bag in the air, shoots it with the shotgun and walks out. The next day he walks back into the bar and tries to order coffee. The bar tender says hold on their chief. We still haven’t cleaned up the mess from yesterday. What is your problem? The Indian says, “Me in executive training program...Come in, drink coffee, shoot the shit and disappear for the rest of the day”.

Have a great October and a Happy Halloween from all of us here at Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa!

TRMI OCTOBER 2018 - 37

I have been fortunate to have served as a volunteer firefighter for 25 years and counting. I got into the fire service when I moved from Waterloo area back to my hometown of Irwin in 1993. Since that time I have moved a couple of times, but have remained an active member of the local volunteer fire department. I have lived in and been a member of the Kimballton Fire Department now for many years and proudly serve to help out the community that we call home. Over all of those years and with three different departments that I have served on, as well as countless friends on departments all over the state, a resounding theme has always been trying to make ends meet. Most volunteer departments in small towns especially struggle with being able to keep their departments outfitted with safe and dependable gear, training, vehicles, and personal protective gear. This stuff is highly specialized and very expensive. Fire service standards have to be adhered to for the sake of safe and efficient operations, and the days of having 40 year old fire trucks have gone by the wayside. Tax revenues generally are enough for an operating budget, but large scale purchases such as replacing dated personal protective equipment or a fire truck are simply not in the budget. Some departments have it better financially, some departments have it worse, but a common theme is that fire departments as a whole have a budget shortfall and have historically looked to fundraisers of some form to make ends meet. Here in Kimballton, we have done a Father’s Day breakfast for many years, and that is our “one and done” type of event that we do and it has worked very well for us. Some departments have steak feeds, some do boot drives, some have raffles, some have dances, some do picnics, and a variety of other things. Departments basically work

within their respective areas to try to garner as much financial support within their communities as they can. One increasing trend the past few years are fire department poker runs or fun runs as well as Fire/ Rescue support events. Just this year on our TRMI events list we have had quite a few listed, and have actually heard of a few too late after they occurred. Zylstra HD in Ames did a Firefighter appreciation day and ride, our neighboring Audubon Fire & Rescue Department ran an ad for their June run this year, and other events were held in the towns of Williamsburg, Stuart, Hartwig, Carter Lake, Brooklyn, and Blairstown. It is no surprise that this trend has developed, as more than one person on any department may be riders. Here in Kimballton our own Chief, Bill Allen rides a Firefighter Edition Heritage Softail. It is a point of pride and a damn good time to be able to serve and ride to help fund a department’s needs. Some of the departments are not so good about getting the word out about their runs, so we ask that if you know of a department that is doing a run next year, get us the date as soon as you can to include on our FREE events list. If people don’t know about it, they cannot get out riding. Also, we ask that if a local or quasi-local department to you is hosting an event of some sort, even if not a riding event, stop by and drop some green in the jar. The money that is donated may be helping keep a fire fighter safe, may be helping save a life, or replace gear or equipment that is needed to help protect your communities. Ride on, and support the Maltese Cross! Al Scheibe and Vernon Schwarte
