One of the staples les le les of the magazine and weekly posts ossts t on our Facebook account during ngg the riding season are the bike night and event listings pages. I am talking about the event list and bike night listings once again for this June issue, but this time it is about how many things nggss have been cancelled or postponed. ned d.

The times we are in now are crazy, and it seems like we are iin uncharted waters, so to speak. A few events have rescheduled for later in the riding season if possible, but many events know that moving to another day or another weekend will simply not be an option and have cancelled entirely for 2020. As the list seems to be changing daily with additions, cancellations, postponements and the like, make sure to check if an event you want to attend is still shaking out. That is unless you don’t mind just going for a ride to check if it is still going on. Either way, just keep in mind that event and bike night organizers will still be making decisions to hold or cancel events for probably the remainder of the riding season.

I am begging this of all of you, try to support these businesses and organizations that have cancelled or postponed events for this riding season. For those that have cancelled, these were not easy decisions to make. In my head I like to make informed decisions, and in this day and age, that seems to be about impossible. Almost everything that you see, hear, watch on the news, see on social media, and ask for input on has to be qualified as to the legitimacy of the content. It seems that there are so many people that spin their message based upon what their desired effect is, and it is infuriating. People in general want to do the best they can for their businesses, their events, their people, and their cause, but that is made harder to do with misinformation. All of the crap floating around has made it very difficult for people to decide to hold events in times that are beyond the current restriction guidelines. I don’t hold it against anyone that has cancelled an event for this year, but if it was something that you would have attended, maybe do what you can to still show support for that

business or organization. They are still trying to keep their doors open or their organization running, so do what you can to help them out, despite the event cancellation.

Additionally, please support the events that are staying the course and keeping on the path as planned. This was not an easy decision on their parts either and then they get to hear the brunt of the BS from the alarmists about causing more problems for the country if events are still held. No one is telling you that you HAVE to attend, or if you do that you have to get near other people, but you can support events and businesses that are doing events in other ways. You can make donations ahead of time or show your support on social media for events without even attending. You can attend early or later to avoid the largest crowds, you can avoid direct contact with people, or you can just do things as normal if you want! It is entirely your choice as of yet.

No matter what you do though, do so safely. Be safe, wash your damn hands, and don’t let bullshit overrun our lives any more than it already has.

With this issue we are heading into our 11th year and that is pretty phenomenal and we realize we could not have done any of this without all of you! Mark and I were out on a ride a couple weeks back when he started hearing some funny noises coming from the front end of his bike. The forks were making a funny “thunk” when they travelled back up after dropping into one of the potholes left by our long winter. At our last stop, he decided he was going to hop on my bike and try to simulate the same conditions that his bike was under each time it began thunking. I sat on the bench outside the Casey’s while he began rolling backwards quickly and braking, rolling and braking. Well, he didn’t hear any thunking, but he did get a response from my bike. The fob was in my pocket, so all the facts gathered by the bike’s sensors indicated that the bike was being stolen. Fortunately, my bike is too old to start honking, but the lights were sure flashing furiously! I knew from reading the manual from cover to cover (which Mark had made me do before he even let me swing my leg over the seat of the bike!) and from listening to other riders’ stories that if I would just go stand by the bike with the fob in my pocket, the alarm system would calm down.

Yes, even under dark circumstances, God is near and waiting to step in. My bike’s sensors had no choice I remember hearing one hard-luck story about a guy but to obey the signals from who had loaded his bike in an enclosed trailer early one my fob and calm down. We, morning to make a cross-country trip. He and his wife on the other hand, have the stayed in a hotel the first night and the trailer was locked freedom to acknowledge up safely in the parking lot, so he didn’t check things out that God is in control of the until the next morning. By then, the battery was almost situation . . . or not. We can admit that we don’t know completely dead from the lights flashing non-stop. He all the facts and can’t foretell the future . . . or not. We learned an inconvenient lesson: keep the fob with the bike can thrash around and cause havoc in other people’s lives when you’re transporting it. The sensors don’t know that because of our own distress . . . or not. We can dig into the owner is in control.

God’s word for further guidance . . . or not.

We humans are equipped with sensors called “feelings”.

And like the case of the sensors in my bike, we may not accurately interpret the situations around us and respond in the best way. Since God designed us, his Word is the ultimate manual. It shows us who God is and how he is working to be involved in our lives - even before we are willing to put ourselves under his care. I get it that no one is going to learn all there is to know about ourselves, about God, and about relating to others by reading the Bible from cover to cover one time, but we have to start somewhere or we will be forever stuck acting on our feelings instead of acting on the truth of God’s word.

For example, every one of us has felt alone and down at some point in our lives. What should our response be to those feelings? Do we follow them to more gloom and distress or should we see what the Bible says about God’s relationship with us and about our alone-ness?

The world drums into us from the time we’re young that it’s up to us to “fix our own problems”, “take care of our own business”. It’s true that we’re responsible to pursue a Biblical solution to a problem: depending on the situation we’re in we may need to see a doctor and take medication, get counseling, change our diets, get a second job to pay off debt, apologize to our spouse – whatever. What we should not do is continue to blink our lights and honk our horns and wear ourselves out in an effort to be the boss.

Ultimately, we must come to grips with the fact that we don’t have the power to fix much of anything or anyone, including ourselves. That power belongs to God alone.

He knows the big picture and will cause everything to work out for our good - maybe not the way we wanted it to work out, but still for our good.

Don’t get stuck living life according to your feelings.

Learn to live by God’s Word. If you can’t find a Biblebelieving church to become part of, a couple of good places on the internet that supply short Bible lessons are the CMA website (listed below), and the website for “Our Daily Bread”: odb.org .

At the beginning of the Bible, Genesis chapter 1 starts off with “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters.” That may be a pretty accurate description of how life feels right now: no purpose, empty, nothing in front of us or behind us but dark, cold, May you know God’s blessings as you follow a life with tossing waves. Like the sensors in my bike, we are him – Karla working with the facts at hand and things look pretty grim.

The last 9 issues of TRMI have followed my rides across the country to hit all of the lower 48 states. With that accomplished, I mentioned to Vernon the possibility that I continue with a monthly column of various rants and ramblings about the motorcycle world, future rides, photo-shoots, events, garage projects, and/or current world events.

I’ve spent nearly 25 years writing for various biker publications nationwide, but I do very little of it these days, most of which is seen on these pages.

After so many years of creative writing I still have story ideas pop in my head, typically while I’m riding, so I have no way of writing down these ideas, leaving most of them lost in the wind. I also have people mention every once in a while, that I should start my own blog, or some sorta bullshit like that, but here’s just a couple of reasons that won’t happen… First, I don’t have the time to maintain all my social media accounts as it is, so the time for upkeep on more online material is not in the cards.

Second, I still prefer to sit down a read a publication in print, rather than stare at any sorta computer or digital device, so screw that idea!

and as much as everyone is sick of hearing about the virus ordeal, the subject still circles around to make this month’s rambling fall into place. The term social distancing had come to the point that it makes me wanna puke whenever I hear it! And with motorcycle and hot rod events being cancelled/postponed, it has left many of us with little or no income, but has also left us with some spare time on hands, which myself I haven’t had the pleasure of for many years. When all this started getting crazy, I was working in Daytona for Bike Week, then got home and still managed to get Natanic’s 2021 calendar ready for print, which since then has given me some time to breathe. With every destination that I might wanna ride to being closed, I haven’t had much desire to jump on the bike and ride, and combined with the fact that I’ve done about 1000 miles already this year (most of which were in Florida) I haven’t had that spring fever to ride, mostly keeping my happy ass at home tending to things. Although I’d much rather spend time in the garage, I pretty much had no choice but to make house and yard issues my first priority with trees that needed to come down around the garage that were screwing up the roof or ready to fall on the garage, and another tree trying to lift our LP tank off the ground. Walls and flooring trim around the kitchen needed work, and new shelving in closets for better organization and for kickknacks in the kitchen so those gadgets weren’t boxed up in closets any more. A serious purge of old clothes and shit that’s accumulated in closets, and a pile of used tires in the storage shed that all resulted in a couple loads to recycling and disposal centers. A serious deep cleaning and dusting around the house, to hopefully alieve the allergies I’ve developed in recent years, some mudding, some painting, some electrical work, and trying to figure out how the hell to keep birds from getting into our basement! I even put some photos of grandkids in a picture frame that we have hanging in the kitchen, one of those shelf/key hanger type frames that we got years ago, but never added our own photos. So yeah, I’m a real proud photographer to say that I had the factory supplied pics from the store bought picture frame hanging in our kitchen for many years!

RAMBLINGS

While this monthly column seemed like a good idea a few months ago, as I neared the end of my story line for the 48 states, the reality of how far behind I am at home and in the garage started to set in, as most readers could tell from last month’s recap. I’ve accomplished a lot in the motorcycle publication world, logging nearly 100 magazine covers, hundreds of motorcycle features, and easily hundreds if not thousands of event articles to date.

Not to mention photographing and publishing Natanic’s Pin-ups biker babe calendar for the last 10 years. But anyway… On the home front, basic maintenance and cleaning routines have been put off for so long that in some cases they’ve turned into dire needs, and a garage full of motorcycle projects collecting dust is just plain depressing to look at. With that said it’s hard to say how long I’ll keep at this routine of a monthly column, maybe a couple months, maybe a year, who knows at this point?

I do like the idea of my various ramblings in print, but the reality is that garage time is my best therapy right now, so we’ll see how things go. But for now, hopefully you We all have little details to laugh at around home, don’t find these things too boring! but there comes a point where some of those laughing points become a nuisance, so pretty much every room Moving on… I’ve tossed around a few ideas in the house has been on the to-do list, except my office on what this month’s article would touch base on, and basement, which are both good winter projects. lists,” but rarely complete them and often times lose them, but I have managed to keep it handy this time with house/yard stuff down one side and garage stuff down the other. I’d much rather tackle the garage first, but the house is higher priority, and another problem is adding new things to the list every day. So even though I’ve been busting my butt, the list looks like I’m not getting much done. My solution is to start a daily list of simple goals that can easily be accomplished each day, and make sure that at least one item on my main list is done each day too, which has worked out pretty good.

And I have a ton of left over fliers from events that got cancelled, so I have plenty of scratch-paper to make notes each day!

Natanic’s 2021 calendar is off to print and should be available online by now, for pre-orders anyway, as they likely won’t ship until the end of June. Yeah, virus stuff has set-back the calendar release too. Speaking of the new calendar, the cover girl of this month’s magazine your holding is one of Natanic’s calendar girls, and she’s featured in both the 2020 and 2021 calendars. And in choosing some photos for this month’s story, my phone pics of work around the house and yard didn’t seem very appealing, so here’s some behind the scenes at Natanic’s 2021 calendar and a few shots from Daytona, all before social distancing was a thing!

s I write, we are in the first part of May. Our spring has turned out to be far different than anyone could have anticipated. Just like everyone else, we have had a slow down here at ABATE as well. I am hopeful that by the time you are reading this, that our great state of Iowa is on the path to returning to so form of normalcy. I am hoping that everyone is out riding and enjoying their favorite stops.

Brotherhood B h h d Part P II I personally preach about brotherhood a lot. You hear a lot of people say, that’s why they joined this club or that club.

Maybe it means more to me because of my time in the military and in combat. But here are some of my thoughts.

You hear people say, always keep prospecting. Well, with brotherhood it should go way past the patch. If you were to meet your brothers outside the club, would you still break bread with them? Would you still have beers? What about that softball game your brothers daughter is having, would you still go to support her or his family? Graduations? Birthday parties? Would you sit there with your Brother’s 5 year old daughter and let her put butterfly hair clips in your hair? What if their 18 year old son just needed you to listen to how he can’t communicate with his dad? If you say no, then you need to check yourself.

It’s easy to blame someone else for why you won’t drink or share with them. They are difficult. They are whiners.

They just don’t get it. Well, maybe you don’t. Be who you expect other members of your club to be. Be the solid one that everyone looks to as an example. I’m not saying you will always be perfect, and there is no perfect club.

However, you can always try. You won’t always succeed.

You’ll still lose your cool and piss people off. But recenter, and move forward. Be the brother that if someone is down, you are willing to reach out your hand, and help them up. Support them through the good and the bad.

Brotherhood Part III I was in a Veterans MC for a few years. Found them when I wasn’t looking for anything but missing out on everything. Missing the things that I had when I was in the Service. It kind of shocked me when I went on their inaugural support ride. The same familiar feeling of comradery and the brotherhood that I felt when I was in the Army. Taking guys from all walks of life, races, jobs, political and religious beliefs, and bringing them together for service. Service for the Veterans in the area.

I’m not gonna get into why I ultimately left the Veterans MC, but I will admit that it was me just as much as it was a few of them. In some aspects, more so. I lost sight Brings another point. Be humble. Be a solid brother to of some of the things that I wanted to be as a brother, know your faults or accept them if they are pointed out. and things I expected from them, and wasn’t giving Don’t be a bigger ass to just point out what someone else nor getting any longer. Either way, it wasn’t an easy is doing wrong. That’s just deflecting from what the issue decision. I always put the club first, tried to do what is. Sit back and reflect. You don’t always need to have an was best for the club in every aspect, even when it went immediate response. Be humble enough to accept some of against what I felt or believed. I felt leaving was best for the flaws in our brothers AND in their family. Cause their the club, and for me. immediate family should be yours too. Not every brother is going to be as solid as you, so be the example.

I read one time, that true brotherhood isn’t about the guy next to you, as much as its about his wife, his kids and Bottom line. If a brother was to leave the group, out good, how they grow to see you the way he sees you. Being a or you have left the club, would you still break bread or brother to him, to his S.O., an uncle to his kids. Making wish them or something as simple as a happy birthday? If it to their games to cheer them on, birthday parties, not, I say sometimes you have to check yourself, not just weddings, and the “life” stuff. their tribulations. How sometimes, they just don’t see eye to eye with their parents, and being a good ear at times, helping them with their homework, playing hide and seek, or a tea party.

Those are the important things.

Now starting over, I’ve found a patch to earn and some brothers that share that patch, with the same beliefs as I do. Not every chapter member sees it the same, but the majority do, and that’s important. Yes, it’s weird starting at the bottom again.

Starting over, but I’ve also found that some of these guys remember me from the other club. So they still respect my opinion, so they will still ask for it. I’ve imparted some knowledge on some of the younger guys. And I have to admit, it’s been fun. Learning all over again. Relearning what it was that was important to me with club life. My ego is checked, my ambition is ready to go, bike is solid, and my brotherhood is spot on. Now I’m just waiting for my opportunities to shine and do what I do.

And yes…sometimes it sucks prospecting again, but that is part of the bonding.

The drama with the old club, the reasons I left (or you left)? You have to leave them/it behind. Just let it go. As the saying goes, “mirrors only show what’s behind you for a reason, that’s because you’re not going that way.”

So make it a point not to go backwards. Let all that BS just go away. You don’t have to forget what happened.

You’ll know who you can trust and can’t trust. Trust in those that still stood by you, and checked on you when you left. The ones that wanted to make sure you were ok. Those are the ones that are still trying to be a brother to you. They are being what you were wanting them to be. Who knows, maybe they learned to be a solid brother from you.

Bottom line. Starting over is not always easy. Try to do what is best for your club, first and foremost. Because, let’s face it, when you start over with a new club, those same issues are still there too. You don’t have to leave your club to start over either. If you’re an officer or a general member, step away. When you come back, start over. Be the brother that you expect your brothers to be.

Lead by example. Don’t hold back and go all in. This is a life you are choosing to be a part of. Be that brother.

Be solid. Stay focused. Earn that patch all over again, or if you stayed with your club and decided to start over with them, do just that. Start over. Act as if you never met the guys before. Learn their habits all over again, what they believe in, what they like, how many kids, siblings, how they ride, all of it. Get some miles on, together. Don’t be too proud to learn it all over again. You’re starting over after-all. As for me, wish me luck. I’m on day 147.

It was the mailman’s last day on the job after 35 years of carrying the mail through all kinds of weather to the same neighborhood. When he arrived at the first house on his route he was greeted by the whole family there, who congratulated him and sent him on his way with a big gift envelope. At the second house they presented him with a box of fine cigars. The folks at the third house handed him a selection of terrific fishing lures. At the fourth house he was met at the door by a strikingly beautiful woman in a revealing negligee. She took him by the hand, gently led him through the door, and led him up the stairs to the bedroom where she blew his mind with the most passionate love he had ever experienced. Now, I haven’t been to some of these places in years, some more recently, but even still, I have fond memories of the adventure and over the years, your mind will play tricks Where to? Great little spots, joints, towns, characters, and usually not more than anything straight for more than and more that the bike has been a part of (an extension of a mile. We legit found it by accident coming home from me) for so many miles, smiles, sunburns, hail stings, gastro Sioux City one day, at the end, near Onawa, my buddy Van fluxuations, jokes told, and photos snapped. I had the time, Rock pulled alongside and said, “Let’s do that again!” like so many of us, to think, to reflect, to miss, to dream.

I would catch myself at my compound, maybe enjoying The Grotto in West Bend, Plow in the Oak Park near Exira, a cigar, bourbon or whatever, in the quiet, and one thing seeing Okoboji’s waters after a boring ass ride in Northkept popping back into my melon, time after time, while west Iowa, Cruising HWY 34 across the lower third of the thinking about, not just riding, but the damn freedom I state, getting an ice cream in Pella while the tulips bloom, had, we all had. I would ponder trips across the state my all stuff that I miss, took for granted, and can’t wait to do bride and I took, remember the shit conditions we kept again. on powering through, the great meals we had, the laughs, the people I rode with, the views, the weird stuff we came I can ride without a destination or place to go, but it’s across, the roadside attractions we discovered, some rid- more enjoyable when I know I can find a plate of wings, a ing out of our way, because, why in the hell not!
