With June being our 8th Anniversary here at TRMI, and celebrating that as well as our receiving of the National Coalition of Motorcyclist Silver Spoke Award, we have been feeling pretty damn good around here. We celebrated by having a staff Christmas party in June, along with our Anniversary party. We decided to do a Christmas party during this time of year so that we could actually ride with our staff. That would be a tall feat for a December or January timeframe party. It worked out pretty well despite the fact that not everyone could make it, and we missed them greatly, but we did have some fun. We decided to go for a ride, visit a few good sponsors of the magazine, and then come back to the Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa World Headquarters and head out to the range. The TRMI World Headquarters is also the Thunder Guns World Headquarters, and we wanted to share another love and freedom with our staff, so we shot the hell out of some paper and clay targets. Nothing like sharing in riding and burning gun powder to solidify the camaraderie of a crew! After range time, we came back and grilled some burgers and brats, and had a few cold beverages, and told a lot of stories and shared a lot of laughs. End result was a great day together for the Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa staff, and this was the least that we could do for every one of them that takes time out of their lives to help make this thing work. This is the 98th issue published under our ownership, and that is a great feat and could not be done without the wonderful staff. Thanks tons to the staff for helping to keep this thing going.

about how we live our lives. I feel that the past year has been good, and the spark of patriotism is coming back in this land that we call home. Exercise those freedoms we have, and do everything in your power to make sure that freedom prevails in the sometimes tumultuous times that we live in. Take a moment during the Independence Day celebrations to remember those that have fought and are fighting for our freedom. All things come with a cost, and to some, they have paid the ultimate price, so don’t let that all be for nothing by handing away any of our wonderful freedoms. This seems to be the time of year that the number of motorcycle crashes increase greatly. It always seems that August is highest, with July and September being about tied for second of deadliest months for motorcycle riders. Some reasons are fairly obvious, simply due to more motorcycles, more miles on those motorcycles, and more cars on the road. All of those together make it more dangerous. We would like to see all of you enjoy the ride and return home afterwards so make sure your rides are safe and road worthy. On top of that, ride straight, ride safe, ride defensively, and live to ride another day. One last note for this month, we have our third out of four months for the Tall Corn Run for the month of July. There are 15 new spots to check out this month, so be sure to Check In at as many spots as you can. This is also the first month that we get to list the monthly winners for the May Tall Corn Run. Look on the TCR pages for your number, and if listed, stop back at the spot you won to collect your prize. If you need a card or have to get a replacement card, stop in at any of the spots listed with an “R” and register. Get some more riding, have some more fun, and do so safely!

Many of the aforementioned activities could not have occurred without the level of independence that we have here in the good old U.S.A. It seemed fitting to bring that to everyone’s attention that just the simple day’s activities at our anniversary party could not have happened without the freedom to do as we want. We exercised a few of our Amendments, and continue to do that as much as possible. Robert Burns probably didn’t have motorcycles in mind when he penned the mouse poem, the one that says “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”. Well, he should have because that pretty well sums up our ride season so far. Even the mice thing works as Karla is in the habit of calling our sons and myself “vermin boys”. Usually when we aren’t jumping through the proper hoops, as in something she thinks we should be doing and we are not, even though we probably don’t have a clue. I’m sure it’s a term of endearment though, as much as she uses it.

Seems this season, most every time we have a ride or event coming something goes awry and we have had to scramble last minute logistical things to pull them off. Like last weekend where we had a three day ride to western Iowa planned since January. The bikes were ready, we had reservations and then work emergencies popped up delaying our early-morning departure until evening. Since we were still in town, Karla suggested we could get ourselves out of hot water with the family by staying a bit later for the granddaughters’ dance recital, then leaving. Ok, ok we can make it happen with a few adjustments. After work and a mad dash to theater we were treated to a two and a half hour dance extravaganza. All the time I kept thinking to myself, one more number and we will get on the road. Nope. Don’t get me wrong, we love our granddaughters and enjoy watching them do all the concerts, ball games, etc.… but when the old women involved with the dance school began going forward and usurping the little girls’ stage time to do several of their own numbers I started to lose it. I could see the hills and road slipping away. There is something a bit bent in these old gals dressing up in sparkly outfits like the little ones and trying to tap, shuffle-step and slide their way through multiple numbers. While the sight of the ride plans were rapidly fading the thing that wouldn’t fade was the sight of all the old gal-parts bouncing that weren’t meant to bounce. It was a good thing I didn’t have straws in my soda or I’d have been tempted to poke my eyes out. Fairness statement… It was a good reminder for the guys also. Not me - just a hypothetical situation, you know. Like if you are headed out the door to mow in jams, black socks and sandals and your wife marches you back in to change, then she says, “And put a shirt on or you will scare the neighbor kids.” Maybe you have reached that point also.

It’s easy to trip over logistics in our evershrinking hamster wheels and I’ve found as I get older my hamster wheel is getting a bit rusty, harder to turn and squeaks. Takes a lot more coffee and ibuprofen

Well, the recital finally ended, I did not go blind as I was afraid of happening, but I do still have a severe squint that I hope is not permanent. We survived, despite thinking otherwise, got home, chucked our ride plans and took the car. Everything turned out well, we had a great time with all our friends, visited places we probably would not have gone on the bikes and ended up enjoying

to make it spin.

The Lord knew we would struggle with all these things. We get worked up and try to manipulate and manage; we get upset when things don’t go our way or plans change. That country song about making the Lord laugh by telling him your plans comes to mind, but he tells us to rest in him. The thing is, ultimately he is in control, not us and we are to trust in him. We can’t do it in our strength anyway. The Bible tells us in Romans that all things work together for good to those who love God. God wants us to call out to him. In 1st Peter we are told to “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Jesus said,” Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Amen, give it to him and receive from him. That’s all for this month. With all the rain I’m behind in the mowing, Karla’s at work, and anyway those neighbor kids need a good scaring.

Walking for Veterans

help, but one of the biggest issues is getting people to realize that they can ask for help.

Recently TRMI’s very own eye in the sky, Ben, was out and about, just doing his thing, when he came across some random dude tearing up some pavement on two sneakers. Yes, I said sneakers. So of course, being inquisitive, Ben had to stop and ask the guy just what in the hell he was doing, running along carrying two flags, on the side of the highway, on such a hot day. Well it just so happened, that Ben’s curiosity landed him, and Atlantic News Telegraph writer Jennifer Nichols an inspirational story that was worthy of print. Check out an excerpt from Jennifer’s article below, and see just what inspired Brian Geerts to make his journey across Iowa on two feet.

‘The military teaches you it’s weak to ask for help in some instances, and that’s what shelters some people from getting help.’” Geerts said that along his journey people were very supportive and helpful, as well as curious like our own staff member, Ben. But he knows others in the service who haven’t had the same experience as he has. He has known friends who have tried to commit suicide, and others who have tried, and unfortunately are no longer living. Geerts decided last year he wanted to do something to raise awareness of suicide and post-traumatic stress, and decided to carry a flag and walk and run from Omaha, Nebraska to Bettendorf – his home town – by June 9. He’s also working with a group, Operation Engage America, which was created by two families that had lost sons in the military, and ‘offers support, awareness, education, and resources to Veterans, First Responders and their families,’ according to their website, operationengageamerica.org. He said the problem of military suicides is not new – he has a friend whose father committed suicide back in 1960 after serving in the Korean War – but he believes since the early 2000’s, the idea is more openly talked about, and that the Veterans Association (VA) is doing better getting people help who need Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

The Flying Merkel had a conservative engine-control system featuring an automatic inlet valve and a pre-set outlet valve. The V engine initially displaced 884 cc and delivered 6 horsepower through a two-speed gearbox and a belt drive, for a maximum speed of 60 miles per hour. A few years back a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of curiosity for our state of Iowa.

Manly is located a short 16 miles south of the Minnesota Border and is conveniently located at the Junction of Highways 65 and 9. The town’s annual summer celebration is called Grafton Turkey Day and is held the 3rd Saturday of July. It includes a 5K walk/run, softball tournament, volleyball tournament, parade, kids’ games, and more. Grafton is also home to Gobbler’s Roost at 306 3rd Street. Gobbler’s Roost serves lunch, dinner, and drinks. You can find just about anything in this joint…wings, salad, pasta, sandwiches, and amazing burgers. They are closed on

That nasty early heat spell we had in May kind of made me think a bit again about hydration levels. This is something you don’t think much about, until you have an issue. My issue was quite a few years ago in July when I was working outside in a remote location for an extended period of time. It was a typical hot and humid Iowa July, and I made the mistake of not keeping hydrated. The downside to not replenishing fluids for me ended up with a couple different ER visits and an admission to the hospital to be treated for kidney stones. Evidentially, when my system gets dry, those little tiny rocks start to move and then they cause a bit of direct and referred pain. To this day, if I don’t drink enough water, I end up with pain from my lower back all the way into my groin. That is right, my nuts hurt, or seem to,and so I make sure to stay hydrated.

Energy drinks are different than the sports drinks, and actually they contain very large amounts of caffeine, sugar, and other stuff to overstimulate. You know, one of those must have, must save, must reference lists that anyone can use when getting ready and packing for a two wheeled endeavor. I am a list type of person, reference the list, and get it done, cross it off the list and move on. The list that I am speaking of is a packing list for a motorcycle trip. We get asked all the time what we pack to go on trips. That leads us to the first difficult part of completing such a list, and what is actually considered a motorcycle trip. One of the first things to do is figure out what kind of motorcycle trip you are going to take. Is it a trip just going out on a day long ride that may take you across counties, through cities, or even across state lines? Hell, it can be one or all of those criteria, or even more yet. Are you planning an overnight tip? Where you stay at night is one of the main considerations on what you may need to bring with you on your trip. Is it venturing to a motorcycle rally? That alone is a totally different topic anymore the way everyone wants to bring everything including the kitchen sink along to a rally for the convenience factor of home. Is it a multiple day or week cross country trek to enjoy miles and miles of our great land? This type of trip entails a ton of variables such as the prevailing weather for your traveled path, what type of accommodations are you planning by the way of tents or motel rooms, and how many people are on the trip. If there are couples two up, or if each person on the trip ride their own motorcycles can make a huge difference on what and how much to pack. Other considerations can also include taking into account what the purpose of the trip and the schedule look like. If you are truly fortunate enough to ramble about with no schedule, that is awesome. Most times there is something for a timeline, a budget, and a route that has to at least be loosely adhered to. On any given ride, the rider needs to make sure that they have all of the essentials for a good ride out and about in the world. These are things that need to be taken on any kind of trip no matter the length of timeline involved. Make sure your pre-trip inspection is good to go and that the iron horse is ready for the highway. Also at that point, you need to decide what you take along for tools on your trip. I have been riding long enough that I remember the days of NEEDING a tool kit on any trip no matter if it was five or five hundred miles. I have always been the type to take more than needed by the way of tools. I would rather have what I need on the side of the road, than to stand there staring at a broken machine that I have the ability to fix, 30 - TRMI JULY 2018

Another day trip item seems to be a charged cell phone. If you don’t take or have what you need, being able to make some calls to get help can be invaluable. Riding season is usually warm, and to stand on the side of the road cooking in the heat next to a broken down ride can be a drag. Day rides are awesome and a great way to have some fun and put on some miles either alone or with friends. Usually there is a short list of needs for a day trip. Make sure that you have proper attire for the weather for your traveled portion of the world, rain gear if that is a concern, sunscreen, and fluid for hydration. Usually there is nothing needed in a day trip that someone else does not have, or that you cannot stop somewhere and buy if needed, other than your attire and rain gear. They can actually be picked up if the proper stores are open, but why add the extra expenditure if not needed to your day. Take along what you may need for the path you are taking. Now if your adventure is going to take you to places where an overnight stay will occur, there may be some extra stuff that you may need to pack along. Make sure you have a charger for the previously mentioned cellular device. Dead bike and dead phone on the side of the road are a bad combination. You may need to have some inkling of an idea of where you are going to lay your head at night. If camping, you probably need at least a blanket or sleeping bag of some sort. From there on up, you will probably need to have some other supplies if you want them, like a tent, insect repellant, personal protection, and things like that. It is not that you need to sleep in a tent when camping, but I know that I prefer that to being eaten by Iowa mosquitos all night long. Next you may need to take along some sort of clothes for the second day of your adventure. Whatever you have room for and can pack is not a bad idea. A full change of clothes is ideal, but from past experience from years back, there isn’t much room for a full change of clothes on a 1975 Ironhead, so at a minimum, drag along a clean pair of socks and skivvies. Even without a shower, a quick wipe down with a wet wipe and clean socks and drawers make for a much better attitude in the morning before heading out. Usually at least a bit of personal hygiene items are required for me at least. Some deodorant and a toothbrush and toothpaste are the bare minimum. If cooking your own food on this endeavor, then you probably need to have at least some sort of fire starting device and something to chop

some firewood. If your overnight stay includes a place with the word “INN” in the name, then some of this is not required, but that is just simply common sense.

Roar into Harlan Bike Nite on the square has been a summer staple for Harlanites for years now. Each month the bike nite features a downtown business who helps support the “Roar” efforts, and July’s featured business just happens to be Gussied Up, where Lyric turned heads strutting her stuff next to Mike Wohlhutter and Vernon Schwarte’s joint project, a 1940 Knucklehead in a swing-arm frame that is sure to command attention wherever it is ridden.


Here were are with the middle of 2018 flipping by on our smart phones and we can easily get sucked in to the dog days of summer fun, where sun is a plenty, clothes aren’t needed much, the Iowa heat rolls in and winter is a long, far away memory. You remember winter right? That season that rolled in around late November and stuck around until Mother’s Day or there about? Yea, that sucks ass time of the year. Great for the Ice Gods, but shitty for those of us that like to swing a leg, crack a throttle, knock the kickstand up and dump a clutch. Winter. Sucks Ass. One of my first columns this fair 2018 for Thunder Roads, I laid out a great plan for you to consider while we are ice boxed in. Call it a goal list of resolutions or something like that. You know what I am talking about, that time of year that we all tell ourselves, hell yes! I am going to be a better, stronger, non-smoker, fewer beverage consuming, skinner version of that POS I was last year. The road to hell is not only paved with good intent, but the walls are decorated with the cute declarations of self-improvement we give lip service too. But I do believe in goal setting and selfimprovement, I support it, I know it works and the only way you can reach what you want is having a plan go get it.

June, tournaments and what not, would prohibit many shots of poker run fun. That said, I was able to ride the Wing to Lincoln for a tourney. I had to stay in town for a day to help a friend get married, family had to be in town earlier, after wedding I packed up and headed out west. Even getting to ride out a nasty electrical storm under a truck stop along the interstate. But 160 bonus miles are still better than nothing. Our end of summer is much better and I have some runs in mind to attend, so that goal will be reached. One goal I wanted to knock off was a road trip with friends and that is still on the table. Again, I knew it wasn’t going to happen during the first part of the the summer, but later this month, road trip with two great people to a concert on the other side of Iowa is going to happen. I can’t wait to show them some great biker friends’ joints over there, some cool roads I have ridden and to share some laughs. The best part, they fit one of my important rules for going riding. Yes, they are good, safe riders, yes, they are not afraid of putting some miles on. But our important rule is this, do I want to eat breakfast with these people! I have pointed this out before, it’s one thing to ride with people, to drink and dine and more, it’s a major step to enjoy somebody in the morning! My spousal unit and I wonder things like this all the time, would we ENJOY being around this person/couple first thing in the morning. It’s more important than many consider. They are, cool and the show will be legendary! I cannot wait to do that.

HOW you get there is your own business, I can’t motivate you, I can give you ideas, I can support you along the way, but after that you are on your own. At one point in history, these types of reactions were fueled by Patriotism, and the love and support of one’s country…a position that sadly is not as prominent today. Here at TRMI we fully support our troops and America as a whole…we love our freedoms, and we will always support those who protect them. For those (and other) reasons, the Declaration of Independence is still important. It is a statement of who we are as Americans and it helps define the beliefs at the very foundation of our system of government. It tells the outside world the principles by which we live. It also provides us a constant reminder of how to recognize when our own government has become too powerful, arbitrary in the application of the law, or disrespectful of the individual liberties that each of us as citizens possess.

On July 4, 1776, thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England in a historical event which ultimately led to the birth of the United States. Each year on the 4th of July, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate this momentous event in full patriotic force. Conflict between the colonies and England was in full swing when the colonies met in Philadelphia in the summer of 1776. In a session on June 7th, a resolution was presented, including the famous words: “Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.”

On a stifling July day in 1918, 18,000 officers and soldiers posed as Lady Liberty on the parade [drill] grounds at Camp Dodge. So, why are we in a position today to even pose the question, “why is it still important”? One reason lies with the impressionable youth of our nation, who are just learning American history and the mechanisms of our Nation. Another is that there are people whom actively reject the view that individual Liberty is an honorable goal worth preserving. We need to educate the youth of our nation, before they too actively discard our liberties and take for granted the struggles endured by our predecessors to originally gain our freedoms and institute our Independent Nation. Regardless of the reason, we as patriots have a job to do, and why not start it

These words became the foundation of the formal Declaration of Independence that we all know. The actual drafting of the Declaration faced several delays, but when the task of drafting the actual document was laid out, it was placed in from of Thomas Jefferson to complete. Once drafted, the Continental Congress met again on July 2nd, to review Jefferson’s draft. Discussions of Jefferson’s Declaration now? of Independence resulted in some minor changes, but the essence of the document was unchanged. The Happy Independence Day revisions continued through July 3 and 4th, when the Declaration was officially adopted. The h month h off July has always brought thoughts of Freedom to the forefront of my mind, and this July is no different. What better time to honor the sacrifices made by a Veteran, a fellow rider, who holds dear the freedoms shared by Americans. This month we spotlight Army Veteran Vern Will.

Vern’s current ride is a 2015 FLRT that he purchased at Loess Hills Harley-Davidson following an injury, to ensure his love of wind therapy would continue for years to come. As I sit down to write this, the thunderstorm outside makes me thankful for the sunburn I acquired yesterday at the Annual Bell Tower Festival in Jefferson. The event always assures attendees a weekend jam packed with more family-friendly fun and entertainment than you can shake a stick at. The Bell Tower festival makes its home in the middle of the Greene County seat and offers a wide array of activities. You will encounter free shows on the plaza stage, food and craft vendors, sporting tournaments, beer garden, petting zoo, bounce houses for the kiddos, and of course the car and bike shows with additional poker run and tour rides. If you haven’t been before, make sure to mark your calendar for the second weekend in June next year and get in on the fun! The festival seems to gain attendance each year and attract people from all areas of the state. It is the perfect place to catch up with friends, or show off your two and/or four wheeled pride and joy. The event proceeds are used to support the Raccoon Valley Kiwanis Aktion Club. According to the Bell Tower Festival website, “It is the only service club for adults with disabilities, with more than 11,000 members worldwide and 30 members in our local organization.” What a great way to raise money for a worthy cause! This year we travelled over to attend on Saturday, June 9. We wanted to check out the poker run, which took a southerly route, 95 miles in length, making stops in Jamaica (Just One More), Guthrie Center (IncrediBowl), Menlo (Short’s Place), Stuart (Ruby’s Pub & Grill), and

Panora (Owl’s Nest) before returning to Jefferson’s Spare Time Lanes. Registration onsite will began at 8am with the last bike out at noon at 214 N. Wilson St. in Jefferson. This run just happened to be the 10th Anniversary event! In addition to the poker run, this year was the inaugural guided “Flask & Cask” ride. This tour offered a series of guided tours through area distilleries/breweries sure to please. Each stop included a short walking tour of the facility, with the first stop being at the Carroll Brewing Company. Carrol Brewing Company provides great beer paired with a really cool experience to patrons. Next on the list of stops was Iowa Legendary Rye just north of the courthouse in Carroll, where the whiskey is 100% rye made with local ingredients and cooked in small batches to preserve the original prohibition era recipe! Finally, a stop was made at the Santa Maria Winery., this stop included both a tour of the facility and lunch stop. If you haven’t been lucky enough to have stopped at any of these fine Bell Tower Festival sponsor establishments, please do so…whether you are a wine drinker or a whiskey shooter, they are worthy of a stop on your part. Also, make sure to pencil in a trip to the festival, you won’t be disappointed. This restaurant has astounding food to fill you up, and is definitely worth a trip on over. When I first heard of this restaurant, I wasn’t sure what to expect; however a quick search on the web revealed that it was right up my alley. With steaks, sandwiches, and other comfort food, I was one hundred percent convinced. The exterior was a brick red color, and it seemed like a nice little place, which it would turn out to be. When our party of five went into the restaurant, it was a cozy-looking place, with ceiling fans, soft lighting, and a model train chugging around the room above our heads. The service there was amazing! Our waitress was polite and served us quickly and effectively, even though it was busy. She made sure that our drinks stayed full and cleared away our plates and trash quickly.

Melanie decided to have the 8 ounce top sirloin with a baked potato. She had also ordered pasta as her side of choice, as did p Soren. They described the pasta sauce S as a a little sweet and a bit of a spicy, and the th noodles were cooked perfectly. She said that the chicken s strips were crunchy outside, and super s juicy ju and tender inside. The chicken strips also came out piping hot, indicats ing that they were freshly made. Violet also ordered some french fries that she says were, “good, fluffy, and crunchy.” Soren decided to have a boneless salmon fillet with hash browns. The salmon, according to Soren, was tender, flakey, and tasted really good, and the hash browns were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. He also enjoyed the fact that it came with a slice of lemon, and he said that, “the hash browns go really good with ketchup.”

I decided to have the bacon cheeseburger. There are several variations available; I chose to order the half-pound of sirloin beef with a three cheese blend to top it off. Spring rallies always seem to be a hit or miss type of thing. The weather for the month of May usually ends up showing Ma Nature being the crazy hag that she is, and we usually end up with winter trying to scream “We will not go quietly” while rally goers get rained on, suffer through cool temperatures, and try to have fun despite the goofy forecast and weather realities. This year though for Memorial Day weekend, as we were enjoying an extra day to honor our fallen service men and women, we were struck with what may have been the hottest Memorial Day weekend I have ever seen. That did not dissuade a bunch of adults wanting to party though! A few years back Possum and Pam started to push the “Adult” party theme for their rallies. It was a necessity at the time, but seems to have become something of great interest to many people that like to party in an adult themed rally. The Redneck Revival was born at the Conesville Rally Grounds and has been growing ever since.

The crowd gathers to watch some damn good racing and experience the smells of racing fuel and burnt rubber. Naughty games, music, entertainment, and a ton of vendors that can get you just about anything you could want are onsite to make this camper and adult party more interesting. Although it is no longer a motorcycle only rally, it is an adult party that brings in all sorts of people to party together. Bikers, hippies, hot rodders, and college kids all got along and partied despite the heat of the weekend.

AMCA Founders In the decades since, the AMCA has grown to become one of the largest organizations of antiquemotorcycle enthusiasts in the world, with 11,000 members in the United States and more than a dozen other countries.

All National Meets also feature the AMCA’s National Judging Program, in which members’ motorcycles can win awards in three categories: Restored, Original Condition or Period Modified. Instead of competing against each other, bikes entered in the AMCA Judging Program are evaluated on a 100-point scale against the standard of the same motorcycle as it would have appeared when it originally left the factory. National Road Runs provide an opportunity to use these classic machines for their intended purpose—riding on back roads in some of the most scenic parts of the country.

From the beginning, the purpose of the club has been the “preservation, restoration and operation of old-time motorcycles.” Members of the AMCA own, restore, preserve, study or just admire motorcycles that fall into the antique category, meaning they are at least 35 years old. Although the Club is based in the United States, fans of motorcycles from all countries are welcome, and ownership of an antique motorcycle is not required to become a member.

In addition to those events, AMCA members also get access to a number of benefits, including a high quality magazine six times a year and online forums where they can seek advice from experts, and the AMCA Virtual Motorcycle Library, featuring downloadable copies of hundreds of old and rare sales brochures, parts lists and repair manuals. Plus, AMCA members receive discounts on admission to some of the country’s premier motorcycle museums.

Mostly, though, people join the AMCA to meet up with others who share their interest in machines from the classic era of motorcycling. For some, that means the satisfaction that comes from investing thousands of hours in bringing a rusted hulk back to it original perfection. Well it’s that time of year again, yep you guessed it The Freedom Rally is just around the corner. I had the chance to get up to the park this past weekend and it is looking great thanks to all who spend the time keeping up with the mowing, trimming and many other park projects. The new back gate building is looking great and will be ready to when Rally time rolls around, the front and back gate towers are now up as well as some work on the roads up in bike parking by the main stage. It was nice to see so many taking advantage of the use of the park, District 10 ended the day with a cook out after their district ride, Nate and Melissa Evans renewed their wedding vows and there where a lot of people just up to relax and camp as well as pitch in and help where needed.

One of the smartest things the calendar makers ever did was create the month of July. My favorite month of the entire year! Not because I have some kinky love attraction to sweltering heat and pavement hot enough to melt your boots. In my warped mind the calendar makers created July for only 1 twisted reason, eyeball orgasms. You see, the hotter it gets, the smaller the skin coverage becomes. Speaking of eyeball orgasms, back in the late 80’s on a hot July day, I stumbled into this little dive bar. It had been a long hot day of riding in the July heat. I had spent several hours on my knees alongside the road performing the fine art of roadside repair during the hottest part of a pavement melting day. Roadside repair becomes a requirement when the Shovelhead demands a carb adjustment and a fresh spark plug. By the time that old bike and I mutually agreed upon on its ability to perform, my knees hurt, my ass hurt and the palm of my hand was yearning to be incarcerated with a cold beverage. Every part of my body was encased with July sweat, my throat was too dry to spit and I was in dire need of a cool place to hang out for a couple hours. So rolling into a small town and finding a parking lot full motorcycles and a neon light flashing “open” was pure ecstasy.

For the slow readers or those who are still learning how to grow a real beard and even the readers who are required to flash an ID for alcoholic beverages, a fun fact, Algona has not always been home to the Freedom Rally. A lot has changed since the Freedom Rally cherry popping experience in Humboldt but some things remain the same. ABATE is still in charge of hosting the biggest and best biker bash that Iowa offers. It is always hot and I’m not just talking about the weather. The bands are always kick ass and the cool down party is a guaranteed eyeball orgasm. Oh and I can’t forget the height challenged people kicking the shit out of each other makes for a good belly laugh. It always happens during the July 4th weekend, patriotism isn’t the only thing lingering in the air, and the entire celebration remains an exhibition of Freedom, in a variety of different ways, if you have ever been there you know exactly what I mean. I’m not exactly sure that music, drag races, a bike rodeo, a wet tee-shirt contest and multiple eyeball orgasms is what all the brave men and women who have fought for our country had in mind while fighting to keep us free. But I do believe it is how Iowa Biker’s recognize and honor the men and women who unselfishly dedicate their lives to keeping us free.
