Finally things are starting to happen again in the biker world. Although the winter has not been that long really, it seems to have drug on forever. There has been very little to do with other bikers and biker events the past couple of months, so the change is nice. As the February issue comes out before the end of January, there are a few deals coming up worth mention. January 28th is the Welldiggers Winter Ride at Baxter Cycle in Marne. One of our own, graphics guy Jack Randleman is part of this deal and I hope they have a great day for riding the end of January. The next day on January 29th is the Parts Girl Promotions Swap Meet at Rock Island at the QCCA. They do this one and one in Cedar Rapids on March 5th and are the best meets for parts selection. The International motorcycle shows ﬁre up in February in neighboring states as well. February 8th brings the ABATE of Iowa Lobby Day to the Capital and is open to all that can make it early that morning. In the middle of February is the Capitol City Custom Cycle Show and Swap at its new venue in Clive. The meet has been moved to the 7 Flags Event Center. There are many more events coming up, and the events listing is expanding almost daily, so keep an eye on the magazine, website, and Facebook page for updates. Something else coming up in March is the Midwest Motorcycle Show held in conjunction with the World of Wheels in Omaha. The show is March 17th-19th and is the second year that TRMI has sponsored this show, so it is looking at being even bigger and better. Motorcycles from all over the Midwest will be there for display and judging from ISCA and CASI. The show is just over the Missouri in Omaha at the Century Link Center. Just like last year there will be Registration Sites and Check In Sites. We already have some of each booked but will be continuing to get them locked in over the next month or so

yet. The Tall Corn Run Cards from last year will be reused, as we already have all of the information on the card holders, so there is no need to reregister. If you need to get a card, we will be at most of the shows and swap meets over the winter and spring, as well as the Registration Sites will be coming on board very soon. The program this year will run from April 1st through August 31st with an end of year drawing to be held on September 9th. The place and time is yet to be determined as well as what the ﬁnal prizes will include. Some things are still in the planning stage, but as popular as the program was last year, we wanted to let people get the dates in their calendars as soon as possible. As February is the “Month of Love”, make sure that the love of your life knows how much you love them. It is of no consequence if your “love” is the other half, or your ride, but just make damn sure they know they are loved and appreciated. This could be a special meal, maybe a gift, some extra chrome, a full service and lube job, a loving detail and cleaning, whatever it takes to make your love feel special. As February is the month of Melanie’s Birthday, I would like to wish her a Happy B Day on the 22nd, and hope she has a great day! This month for the Blast from the Past page, we decided to make it a little more personal. This is not your typical scan and copy of something cool from the past; this is about a living breathing family in northern Iowa that is noteworthy. This is a pair that you could transport back into the 50’s and they would fit in just fine. This is one of the every once in a while people that you run into in the biker world that you just seem to click with. This couple is the reason that I now know that a Clapper can be either a person or a device to shut off your lights at bedtime.

The Clapper’s are good honest Iowa folks with a passion for keeping history alive. Chad was a picker before picking was cool, and has been doing so since he was a wee tyke. Once upon a time we stumbled across Chad and Angie Clapper at the ABATE D7 Motorcycle Expo. Chad had some bikes in the show, and a booth selling some of his rusty, crusty, old bits of motorcycle and automotive history. Shaggy beard, bib overalls, and a cute and sassy blonde by his side they seemed from the word go like they were quite the couple. This northern Iowa dynamic duo has a couple of ﬁne young Clappers as well, one boy and one girl. Now the fact that Chad is only four and a half decades old does not really make him eligible for a Blast from the Past page, but the fact that they own and operate Clapper Restoration does, coupled with the fact that they live and play with as many things from the past as they can. Looking around the shop at Clapper Restoration is like a trip back in time. It may take more than one cold beverage to take in the sights and see everything cool. Chad has an aﬃnity for all things old, and although he spent many years working 14 - TRMI FEBRUARY 2017

on and restoring cars on top of many other things, his passion is of the two wheeled variety. Vintage motorcycles and also vintage gas pump repair and restorations are just a few of his favorite things. Even Chad’s own motorcycles are old and have a great level of patina. He has a couple of old HD ﬂatheads that you can see him out and about on, and a rigid Panhead chopper that he even rode all the way to Sturgis. Not many these days can accomplish such a feat. All of his rides have nicknames, like one of the ﬂatheads is Bugsy, and the chopper is Rabbit, and he usually refers to them by their given monikers. 99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 19 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa.

Other than the standard Iowa ag staples of corn, beans, pork, and beet, Sac County is home to quite a bit of popcorn production, and there are towns that even have popcorn festivals to celebrate this important part of the local economies.

We headed into Sac County on M64 and within a couple of miles we were in Wall Lake. The town’s claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Andy Williams. up here if needed, as a lot of these small towns do not have premium available if you need it. Downtown there are a couple of places, The Bar and Laney’s Corral. Both of these spots welcome bikers. Next town we came to was Early. This is right on the south side of new Highway 20 on a chunk of road called 471. This was a new one to us but it had something to do about moving the official route of Highway 71 and renaming the old piece 471. Who knows what the DOT does some times. We did have to stop in to the Outlaw Bar & Grill on 471. The owner, Keely was cooking and making some drinks but sure was a friendly soul, taking the time to point out some cool stuff in the area. Stop by and tell Keely that TRMI sent ya! Next stop was Shaller to find something cold to drink. We found a place called Harley’s that is owned by Paula and Jon. Paula was more than gracious to give us a few minutes of her time and point out some of the cool things in and around town. This place is cool as it has a café type of side on the west, and then the bar and beer garden on the east. With a name like this, there is a bit of motorcycle décor, and Paula is true biker mindset helping out a traveler on the way though! All that we needed was something cold and to pick her brain, but she was helpful all the same. We rolled east to Nemaha and noticed many buildings that accounted for the grain elevator. We are sure the flat land around this area produces bushels and bushels of golden kernels and tan BBs alike, and they need a place to store them. The ag industry in this area is quite apparent with many grain elevators and implement dealerships.

the state. Sac City is also home of the World’s largest popcorn ball that weighs almost 5 tons. It is on display by the museum across from the Casey’s gas station. Some spots here to grab some vittles or drinks is at the Viking Bar just north off of the main drag, or the Sac County Cattle Company right on Main Street. We have eaten at both and have had very good luck. It was time to move on so we headed south through Carnarvon and Auburn and headed home. OK, now that we have gotten past the holidays things can go back to normal. Or have we? It seems like there is a holiday every month of the year anymore. Some actually have meaning. Let’s take a look at some of that. Christmas is the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth. Where did Santa Claus come from? When did it turn into the black Friday shopping chaos that we see all over? I fully understand the whole giving thing, but when did it become the unwritten rule to drain your finances including your kids’ college fund in order for Christmas to be considered successful? Greed. The chance to make a buck off of society by commercialization of the holiday. Do some research on your own if you really want to know the meaning of some of the traditions we have adopted. In my opinion, New Year’s Eve has stayed true to its meaning. We celebrate the end of the current year, and welcome the new one. Simple enough. But these huge sales we hear about that carry on into the last week of January are a bit much when they are called a New Year’s sale, at least I think so. February has Valentine’s Day. I was curious to see why a day was created for us to show our love for our significant other, when we should be doing that every day. There’s a dark side to this day. From Feb. 13 to 15, the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia. The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, and then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain. The Roman romantics “were drunk, they were naked,” says Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Young women would actually line up for the men to hit them, Lenski says. They believed this would make them fertile. The brutal fete included a matchmaking lottery, in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be, um, coupled up for the duration of the festival or longer, if the match was right. Makes you want to run right out and buy flowers and candy. March brings St Patrick’s Day. The day where suddenly everyone finds out they’re Irish, and consumes way too much green beer in an attempt to prove it. Of course it isn’t easy to pick up a twelve pack of green beer at the grocery store, so we venture out to the bars. Bars make money, taxis make money hauling drunks around, cops make money collecting those who are stupid enough to drink and drive. Everybody’s happy. April gives us Easter. The day the Bible says Jesus rose from the dead. OK. Where did this rabbit with the brightly colored eggs come from in that story? Did they go to the tomb, notice Jesus was gone, and say “Jesus has risen, quick hide the eggs”? Still doesn’t explain the rabbit. May has several holidays, but only one makes sense to me. Before I talk about this first one, I am not in any way talking down to any race of people. OK, May 5, Cinco de Mayo. When did we put so much time into the birth date of another nation? In my opinion, it’s only to sell more tacos and tequila. I agree that one should celebrate the heritage of the country from which they come, and most people of the Mexican persuasion do that. But we as Americans have turned this into a day of boosting sales

at the local Taco Bell. It isn’t even a national holiday for the country of supposed origin. Also in May we have Memorial Day, created simply as the official start of summer. How many believe that? Memorial Day to me is one of the few sacred holidays. It is to celebrate the sacrifice of the men and women who have died serving in the military. Period .After the day comes to an end, we seem to forget. And don’t forget the big Memorial Day sales at the stores. July has one day set aside to celebrate our nation’s independence. It’s not observed for the Freedom Rally in Algona. This is a day that should be celebrated each and every day. Too many people forget what this day means. They don’t really teach it in history class anymore. Fireworks, barbecues, and cold beer,are not the reasons for this day, and I bet you can find a few 4th of July blowout sales uptown too. September has the official end of summer, known as Labor Day. More barbeques, cold beer, and Labor Day sales. Not to mention a celebration of the American workforce. Use this day to celebrate the men and women who literally built this country. Halloween is for the kids. Candy and costumes mean big bucks for someone. Just another example of commercialization. But it’s for the kids. And now we are to Thanksgiving. The day we should be gathering with family and friends to celebrate and give thanks. This is usually what happens. For some, it is the day before Black Friday. In places it’s more of a Black Thursday afternoon sale. We give thanks for what we have on Thursday, and go to battle with our fellow shoppers on Friday over the latest cabbage patch doll or whatever. The great thing about this country is you have the freedom to celebrate, or not to celebrate, these holidays however you wish. All made possible by the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces of this country. The same men and women who are not able to celebrate these holidays. I did not cover all the holidays, but I ask that you observe 4 holidays at a minimum. 1) Memorial Day , the last Monday in May , to honor those who died serving this country ,2)Armed Forces Day , Third Saturday in May , to honor those men and women serving in the military at the present time 3) Independence Day July 4 , to celebrate the birth of this great nation ,4) Veterans Day, To honor all those who have served in the military . There’s a difference, as they all have significant and different meanings. You have the right and freedom to celebrate as you wish. But our nation’s armed forces are the reason you can. Let’s not forget that. Big business and big dollars have commercialized these once special holidays. And we as a society have allowed this to happen. How, you ask? By feeding into their sales and gimmicks used to get your hard earned dollar. These big stores don’t care that they have people who are forced to spend time away from their families during the holidays, all in the name of the all mighty dollar. It is a shame that the true meaning of the majority of these holidays have been forgotten because of this. One way to stop this is not to feed into their game. These views are strictly my opinion. Rob Robinette aka Bulldog has built A few BSA’s & Trumpets but never a Harley so here is his first attempt. The bike is a 60 Pan/Shovel with electronic ignition & a ratchet 4 speed kicker. He put a starter on her due to the fact he says “my ass is getting older and kicking is starting to wear me out”. Jeremy at Black Rose Machine & my buddy Brad Cramer really came through with their knowledge of Harley engines & talent to bend & shape metal that a garage vice just can’t do. The front end is a DNA with a wishbone front leg from Three Two Choppers, and this really changes the look. Internal throttle and sprocket brake from Exile to really clean things up. Bulldog wanted to do something out of the norm since everything has just about been done to a bike, so he made it so that the mounting tabs and struts stood out instead of hiding them. The engraving credit goes to Otto Carter, truly an artist. Finally the paint, Kevin Terry the owner of “Kev’s Custom Paint” Nailed it, he took Bulldog’s idea and ran with it, and gave the bike the punch it needed. Jake Kessler lives in Marshalltown and is our February featured Military Rider. If the last name sounds familiar, it should because his father Randy was in the January issue. This father son duo both served and both ride! On top of his father, Jake follows in the family footsteps as his grandfather served in the United States Army and is a Korean War Veteran. Jake is currently an Airman First Class (A1C) in the Air National Guard. He serves out of Fort Dodge and has been serving since 2014. He works in the ANG on vehicle and equipment maintenance. Jake completed his Air Force Technical Schooling on Port Hueneme Naval Base. Here he also got to train with the Seabees. True to form, his education and experience in the ANG is brought back to the civilian works as he gets to use the skills leaned in tech school while working as a mechanic at a small shop right in Marshalltown. He uses knowledge learned in the Military working on gas and diesel engines. Jakeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s riding history started with a 50 cc chopper and then a 125 cc dirt bike when he was about 10 years old. When he hit 16 years old he got on his first street bike which was a 1981 Honda CB650C. He stepped up a bit in size and power when he upgraded to a 2008 Harley-Davidson XL1200C

Sportster. Then he traded that off for a touring bike and got a 2012 Road Glide Custom and now on a 2017 HarleyDavidson Road Glide. He got his latest ride from McGrath Harley-Davidson in Dubuque, and chose this ride because he loved the color of the bike and the new Milwaukee Eight engine and all of its advancements. Impossible almost to leave a stock bike alone, Jake has gotten many accessories including handlebars and has some plans for powder coating and a Stage 1 upgrade. Jake says that it is too early to

have anything on the books for this riding season for any big rides or events, but he does plan on riding with the many of his friends that ride. He belongs to the American Legion Post 46 and the American Legion Riders there. If you see Jake out riding around on his new Road Glide, give him a wave and better yet, if you have a chance, shake his hand and thank him for his service. Bikers of Iowa it is ﬁnally here, Hump Month! We have survived December and January, if we make it through Hump Month we will soon be looking at the Non Riding Season in our rearview mirrors. And if that isn’t good news, try this; on

February 1st there will be only 6 more Mondays until the calendar makers oﬃcially declare spring. Some people refer to this month as “The Month of Love”, for you slow readers it’s February.

caught dressing or undressing in public places such as convenience store parking lots. Let’s not forget that no one has made fun of me, laughed at me or made up ﬁctitious names for me since I parked the bike. In the true spirit of upholding my optimistic attitude, I sure do miss my

riding buddies. And I can’t wait to explain to or brag about how my new pipes and heated riding gear keeps me warm and can be obnoxiously loud then ask them if that sounds like anyone they know.

When 2017 arrived I vowed to live up to at least one of those damn New Years Resolutions once in my lifetime! So this year I am trying to stay optimistic about the Non Riding Season. In my sick mind being optimistic about the “The Month of Love” can only mean one thing, get out your barf bags and warm up your hate mail pens because I am going to declare everything I love about the Non Riding Season.

Ok so far I’m sure that you are not very impressed with my love list, how about the simple fact that during the Non Riding Season I haven’t cleaned a single bug oﬀ my windshield. There has been some necessary snow and ice removal but I have a push button in the four wheeler that does all the work for me. Any pussy with a push button starter on their scooter should understand how that works; bring on the hate mail.

First thing on my list that I love about the Non Riding Season is my sunglass budget. I am rolling in the dough. I haven’t lost or even used a single pair of sunglasses since I parked the scooter. Now that I think about it, I am also saving a ton of money on sunscreen. With no predictions in my future about attending the Daytona Bike Week my pockets will be so full of dough I have been dreaming up some spending plans. Maybe its time for new pipes and heated riding gear so I can hit the road sooner. Whoever said money can’t buy you love obviously hasn’t spent much time on the street corner that I frequent.

Another great thing I love about the Non Riding Season, there are no more tough decisions to make. You know the ones, should I pack a coat along, do I need to wear my coat, do I need to take my gloves, or should I be wearing my gloves? Decision making has been simpliﬁed, it’s the middle of the Non Riding Season in Iowa this is a no brainer! A coat and gloves are mandatory apparel every time you step outside even if you are only going outside long enough to fart in the wind. If you haven’t ﬁgured this out yet, the cold has caused brain damage, so put on your helmet too.

Secondly, during the Non Riding Season, I love that I have had plenty of opportunities to practice my Road Kill skills. In my warped mind, anything that crosses my path right now is playing a game of chance and the odds are in my favor for a change. So instead of swerving and hitting the brakes, I hit the gas, take aim and prepare for impact. I ﬁgure every kill made with the four wheeler is one less threat that will have an opportunity to cross my path on the two wheeler. Not to mention, I have nothing better to do than piss oﬀ the PETA people. Next up on the list of things that I love about the Non Riding Season, is the simple fact that I have not been 28 - TRMI FEBRUARY F BRUARY FE RY Y 2017

And when the time comes that I am forced to trade the two wheeler oﬀ for one of those fancy three wheel models I love the simple fact that during the Non Riding Season I have had plenty of time to practice my stopping maneuvers. cialty Pizzas and Build Your Pizza options! After getting an idea of what the selections were on the way in I knew it was going to take some time to decide on our meal for the evening! We pretty quickly narrowed our choices down to pizza (shocked you there didn’t I!!!!) but that only helped a little since there are so many pizza choices available. Now I’m partial to lots of meat on my pizzas so I naturally gravitated to the Meat Lovers pizza. Sausage, Beef, Cappacola, Pepperoni...what could go wrong???? However, Lynnette likes lots of vegetables on her pizza (do I look like a rabbit?!?!?!?don’t answer that!!!!). A compromise was reached, I sacrificed the beef in exchange for Mushrooms, Onion, Green Peppers and Black Olives. The Bordenaro’s Special it is! Besides, how can we go wrong with the namesake pizza? Of the four sizes, 10” 12” 14” 16”, we decided to go 12” and add on an appetizer. We ordered a small order of their Double Dipped Onion Rings. Small because we have learned that small and large are subjective and change from place to place. Onion rings because you can learn much from the rings served and the “Double Dipped” intrigued me! It turns out the small order was appropriate for 2 of us for an appetizer (we still weren’t done with them by the time the pizza arrived!). If you have a group of 4 or more then the large would probably be the way to go. The “Double Dipped” was interesting...the batter wasn’t as thick as I had anticipated from the name w and a was seasoned unlike any that I can remember! b It was just thick enough to showcase the seasoning but thin enough to let the sweet flavor s of o the onion come through! They were definitely mouthwatering!!!!! The pizza arrived (sliced m into in squares!!!!) and smelled heavenly, we could hardly wait to tie into it!!!! The last couple of h onion rings will have to wait until after the main o course!!!!! Awesome thin, crispy crust. Toppings c piled high. Lynnette and I have visited many pizza establishments and have determined the establishments with the best pizza cut it in squares as opposed to the traditional slices. Well once again that theory holds true! Bordenaro’s Pizzeria, established in 1977, is more proof of the theory!!!! TWO WHEEL TRAUMA – A Concept to Save Lives By Anita J. Bailey, Paramedic (retired)

ABATE districts have sponsored TWT at least once. The type and amount of support from ABATE has evolved to the district providing the facility, refreshments, lodging for the faculty and motorcycles for the bike lab. ABATE of Iowa provides a lump sum for instructor travel and stipend. Costs for out of state programs are negotiated with the sponsoring agencies.

The goal of the TWO WHEEL TRAUMA (TWT) Concept is to reduce the morbidity and mortality of motorcycle crashes thru prevention and education. Although the TWT emergency medical services (EMS) continuing education program was developed ﬁrst, it was clearly evident that this problem is truly complex and requires res more than just the EMS continuing education program. It is critical that all motorists rists drive undistracted and with due caution to o prevent crashes, use appropriate safety gearr and seek ﬁrst aid training.

Another huge benefit to the sponsoring ABATE district is the relationship they develop with their local EMS, firefighters and law enfo enforcement officials. We routinely recommen recommend that local bikers offer to bring their motorcyc motorcycles, protective gear and helmets into their local EMS meetings. They can help the EMS provid providers refresh skills such as helmet removal. The mo motorcyclists can learn what they can do to be helpful at the scene of a motorcycle crash. We know that many healthcare workers commonly refer to motorcycles as “donorcycles”. They may perceive motorcyclists as careless risk takers, or worse, as criminals. This stereotype is unwarranted and does not promote a good image for motorcycling. The distorted views are changed face-to-face, one person at a time. Blending the motorcycling and EMS communities benefits us all.

TWO WHEEL TRAUMA: A continuing education program for EMS healthcare workers. The original TWT program was fashioned in early 1986 by 3-experienced Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers in rural Clay County, Iowa. Anita Bailey, Dick “Slider” Gilmore and Frank Prowant had attended EMS continuing education programs dealing speciﬁcally with auto crashes and farm implement entanglement trauma. Slider, a lifelong motorcyclist, wondered if there were programs that dealt exclusively with the injuries that could be sustained in motorcycle collisions. EMS textbooks of the time brieﬂy mentioned motorcycle mechanisms of injuries in the kinematics of trauma section, but no formal classes were found. The three got to work.

Many EMS providers are unfamiliar with motorcycle design so the bike lab was introduced in early 1989. The local ABATE district provides various makes and models of motorcycles, 4-wheelers and sometimes a snowmobile or jet ski. The bike lab is held just after the Mechanisms of Injury session to reinforce those principles.

A crude outline of the course content was developed and assignments were made to build an EMS continuing education program. Slider would teach about motorcycle parts, function and possible mechanisms of injury, the psychological aspects of motorcycle trauma on responders and scene management. Anita would cover the environmental & soft tissue injuries and case reviews of actual TWT scenes, and Frank would research TWT assessment techniques and focus on treatments for those with life threatening injuries. The first TWT was presented in March of 1987 at the Spencer Community Theater with about 70 participants attending. Iowa Lakes Community College awarded the 4-continuing education hours for EMS providers. The agenda included Mechanisms of Injury, Environmental Aspects, Assessment and Treatment and Helmet Removal. The agenda has improved over the years to a full six-hour course that also includes the bike lab, basic skills demonstrations and the Share the Road program. By March of 1988, TWT was again presented in Spencer and was the first program officially sponsored by ABATE (A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education) of Iowa. Lee McCubbin, then the ABATE State Secretary spent the entire year promoting TWT to the ABATE district leaders. Lee and ABATE State Coordinator Dennis Fields assured members that TWT was a nice fit for the ABATE mission of providing education and preventing injury. ACCIDENT SCENE MANAGEMENT (ACM) Because seconds count when a trauma emergency occurs, it is of critical importance that every motorcyclist learn basic life-saving techniques. Ambulances don’t save lives… people do! If those on the scene of a two-wheel crash fail to manage the victim’s airway or stop profuse bleeding, there may be nothing left for a paramedic or trauma surgeon to do. Slider developed this program and has trained thousands of bikers in how to manage the first few minutes of the two-wheel trauma crash event. His nearly 60 years on motorcycles and 20 years as an EMT lend credibility unmatched by others. The focus of the 3-hour course is “dono-harm” first aid and psychological support. Over the 30-years since the first TWT EMS continuing education presentation, the TWT Concept has evolved. We choose to promote the prevention aspects of TWT to hopefully reduce TWT crashes. Emphasis on the motorcyclist’s responsibilities and the addition of STR (Share The Road) sends the message that, together, we can reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with motorcycle crashes.
