I was trying to get the gumption n uup p to t gget ett tthis his hi Letter from the Editor written ffor o tthis or his la his hi llast astt issue of 2021, and was struggling ng wi w with th h quite a number of things going oon n inn personal life and in business life. fee. Then, all of the sudden, poof, I get a cool post from Gary Barr on Bookface giving props for my daily Pledge of Allegiance posts I put on there, and also props for keeping this magazine going in the face of adversity in n this day and age. We all know tthe he he struggles that we have going on n iin n this country right now, and it seems e ms ee m pretty damn easy to start getting a blah attitude, turning into apathy at the speed of sound. Major point about all of this to me was a multifaceted message that sort of shook me awake and got me grounded again. For one, random acts and words of kindness are totally the shit. Just hearing someone notice that what you do or have done impacts their life is invaluable. It puts an extra pep in the step, and is much appreciated. Being kind and even going the extra mile to do something extra for someone sure makes this world a better place to be in, and is a far cry from the tons of negativity that seem to spew forth from some other humans. So, Gary, thanks tons for the post, it did wonders for me for sure. Another reason that this post was so damn cool was the reminder that there are other good people in the world and that not everyone is out for only themselves. If we keep trying to be good, keep in mind that there are other good people out there, and that together we can make a difference in the world we live in and try to make this world a better place. During the heat of the summer, it is easy to see weekly or even daily reminders about how giving the biker world is. One cannot get through a weekend without a benefit or fundraiser of some type perpetuated by the likes of greasy bikers. I am damn proud to be a part of that world. During this winter time of year, it can become easy to forget that fact about the generosity of bikers, simply because there are not many events goings on to showcase the care and concern for fellow humans.

The reminder of such from a simple message was a breath of fresh air and much appreciated. A final point about that simple post was that there are more Americans that are lovers of freedom and rights than I could easily identify. I get comments all the time about loving the daily Pledge of Allegiance and what that stands for. People in my circle seem to love the Constitution, Love the Bill of Rights, Love the Flag, love our County, and love our fellow freedom fighters. Keep the love, keep the faith, keep standing up for what you believe and together we can all make it through this mess we are in now. God Bless America! One final parting shot for this last issue of 2021, is that there are events scheduled for later this winter. The shows and swap meets are on the calendar, and can be found on the back page of this very magazine, and on our Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa Facebook page every Monday. Take a look at the events that are scheduled, and we hope to see you at as many of those that we can all make it to this season. I know for sure we are looking for a little bit of the biker life that sparks back up with the show season every winter and spring. Stop by to see us at the TRMI booth, grab the latest issue, and chat us up for a spell. See you at the shows! Be safe, be ready, be kind… Vernon Schwarte Quote of the Month: “The best index to a person’s character is to how he treats people who can’t do him any good and how he treats people who can’t fight back.” Abigail Van Buren

T MI DECEMBER TR DEC ECEM EMBE EM BE ER 20 2021 2 -5 21 TRMI

Here it is, almost Christmas, and it’s finally time to reap the rewards we’ve all been waiting for. No, not a visit from Santa. The chance to BE Santa! If you’re part of the biking community, you have spent the last 7 months going on Toys for Tots rides in the heat, rain, and cold; going to Toys for Tots chili cookoffs when you don’t even like chili; grilling hot dogs at your local bike dealership to help them with their Toys for Tots campaign – the list of events we’ve all attended is endless. And that doesn’t count the die-hards who do all the shopping and handing out of the gifts. I’m amazed at the dedication of the people who come back year after year to help the US Marine Corps make this program a success. If nothing else, this proves that the opportunity to bring smiles to a needy child’s face at Christmas must be a powerful motivator. Why else would otherwise-sane adults give up so much of their free time and money? If you’re like me, it’s possible that some of the motivation to give comes from your own memories of Christmases when you didn’t have much. I remember one year when I was in 6th grade and my dad had had lung surgery and then went to stay in a TB sanitarium for several months. This was back when most moms didn’t work outside the home, so we were definitely pinching pennies. I still had a couple older siblings at home and a couple of teachers at their high school found out what was going on. They not only brought a Christmas tree over from one of the classrooms, but also pooled their money and delivered a basket filled with a turkey and all the goodies needed to have a Christmas dinner. The memory of their kindness has stayed with me and made me want to copy their generosity and give to others. Maybe you don’t think of yourself as being religious or as being a Godly person, but God says that when you sacrifice so you can give to those in need, you’re acting like him. If you have been around extended family at all, you’ve surely noticed that when one child cocks his head a certain way he reminds you strongly of his father, or when one of the girls laughs she sounds just like her mother. In the beginning, God created mankind in his own image but that likeness was broken and mutilated when Adam and Eve chose to sin. It is truly astounding that any likeness to God is noticeable in humans, but I think it’s most obvious when people give. James 1:27 sums up God’s evaluation of giving in this surprising way: “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”

out of pride or embarrassment, telling them we didn’t need help, and refusing to accept the gift. But she DID accept the gift. We have those same options before us as the Lord stands at the door of our hearts with his gift. Will we acknowledge that we need forgiveness for our sins? Will we then walk with God through a restored relationship? Wishing you God’s best this Christmas - Karla Mark and Karla Cornick are with the Christian Motorcyclists Association. Find out more about CMA and God’s plan for you at www.cmausa.org

God’s greatest gift was to send his Son Jesus to earth as a human baby, knowing that he was destined to die as payment for our sins. And what has always been incredible to me is that Jesus agreed to the plan! He agreed to restrict himself to living in a human body, with all of a human’s problems, then to endure a humiliating, agonizing death – all to make sure we could have forgiveness of sins and a restored relationship with God. That puts all of us in a similar situation to what my mom was in when the teachers showed up at our house with the tree and the basket of food. Mom had the option of lying 6 - TRMI DECEMBER 2021

Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa is pleased to introduce Mr. Alex Gross of Des Moines. Alex is a mechanic with Mean Machine Cycle Parts in Elkhart, a dedicated sponsor of TRMI. Enlisting in the United States Marine Corp in 2012, Alex spent 4 years defending our great nation. Attaining the rank of E-3 and an MOS of 3521 – Diesel Mechanic, Lance Corporal Gross served in Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, CA until his honorable discharge in 2016. During his time in California, Alex performed many stunts on his Suzuki GS-6R until he wrecked that bike. Following his return to Iowa, Alex picked up a Honda Magna. He eventually moved on from that to a 2006 Harley Davidson Electra Glide. And today, Alex enjoys long rides on his 2017 HD Ultra Limited. “For me, riding is truly wind therapy. It helps me clear my head. I don’t need a destination; I just need to enjoy the ride.” Lance Corporal Gross was always a military brat. His father served our country as a member of the United States Army. His great uncle completed a career in the military, retiring after 23 years of service in both the US Army and Air Force. And, his grandfather served our nation as a United States Marine. What an amazing level of servitude and national pride this family has given! Alex takes pride in continuing that tradition. He takes pride in helping his younger brother begin the learning process of riding a motorcycle. He looks forward to their upcoming rides together. And, he takes great pride in his work. Being a mechanic is something that simply came natural to Alex. He’s been working on bikes all of his life. The Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

Marine Corps provided the schooling to convert his love of motorcycle engines to the world of diesel engines. You can tell when talking to Alex he knows what he’s talking about. As he says, “I live this shit!” Whether it was the USMC, his time at the Big Barn or his current position with Mean Machine, Alex is proud to be the guy everyone else can depend on. “I’m totally self-taught, I don’t have a sheet of paper that says I know how to work on bikes. I have skills built through years of grinding on motors, at home as a kid, in the Corp, or in a shop … the grease under my fingernails proves my love of this job!” Working at Mean Machine provides Alex with plenty of opportunities to attend bike nights all over our community. In addition, he enjoys riding with the Freedom Riders. “Having been in a 1% group, I feel pretty comfortable around everyone. I think they accept me and I accept them.” He looks forward to bringing in a stunt team for a Bike Night in 2022. Over the past year, Alex has replaced the cams in his Ultra. With winter coming up, he looks forward to putting the bike in the garage and really getting to work. There’s a 124 Big Bore kit on order. His love of stunts dictates some cutting on his bags and rear fender for wheelie availability. He’s sure there will be more work, tuning and such, which will present itself during Iowa’s “off season”. Residing in East Des Moines with his beautiful wife Brittney, Alex is the father of two amazing children: Xandria (4) and Xander (18 months). He takes pride in passing down his love of motorcycles to them. From all of us at TRMI, Lance Corporal Gross thank you for your service. Without your dedication and commitment, we could not do what we do. Continue to be “Always Ready, Always There!” Shane OMalley

 I am sure you have heard the term MRF in various circles of two-wheel fans. But just what exactly is the MRF and why should you care? The Motorcycle Riders Foundation is “the first motorcyclists’ rights advocacy organization with a full-time legislative and political presence in our nation’s capital. The only Washington voice devoted exclusively to you, the street rider.” A NATIONAL VOICE FOR RIDERS! The MRF is on a whole other level when it comes to protecting our two-wheel rights. The founders of the MRF “wanted a staff that was all muscle and no fat, supported not by casual members but driven by a team of dedicated volunteers, with each volunteer committed to shouldering his or her share of the demands of liberty. They envisioned a team committed to core values like respect for riders’ diverse lifestyles and opinions, integrity in conduct, excellence and boldness in facing challenges head-on and, above all, leadership — leadership in the unrelenting struggle for the safety and freedom of American motorcyclists.” And this is why we are doing our part to support our friends Eric Ross and Christi Clemons Gunderson in gaining new members for the MRF. According to Eric, “the Motorcycle Riders Foundation needs your support to ensure we continue to fight for your rights on the Federal level. Things we are currently fighting for are what kind of fuel we can use, to wearing or not wearing certain gear, being able to customize a motorcycle as you wish, profiling due to attire, and if Autonomous vehicles can see us as well as other modes of transportation.” All of these things can directly affect our freedom as riders and result in negative impacts on the motorcycling lifestyle as we know it. One of the most important things the MRF does is hold a legislative strategy session each year called the Meeting of the Minds. During this yearly session, state motorcycle rights groups develop the FEDERAL legislative priorities for the upcoming year. “Items are discussed, debated and eventually voted on, with each Sustaining State Motorcyclists’ Rights Organization (SSMRO) having a voice and a vote. Legislative priorities are placed in one of three categories, “High,” “Medium” and “Monitor”. These priorities will serve as a roadmap, for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation Washington D.C. team,” as they focus on the year ahead. According to the MRF website, current “high” priority items include the following. Profiling: Continue pursuit of the House anti-profiling resolution mirroring the Senate version that passed unanimously. Build momentum for inclusion of antiprofiling language in other legislation. Renewable Fuels: Advocate for targeted changes to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

Autonomous Vehicles: Advocate and monitor any legislation or regulations related to motorcycles concerning connected and autonomous vehicles.

Emission Regulations: Engage the EPA & Congress on any activity related to motorcycle emission regulations. Definition of a Motorcycle: Educate policymakers and advocate for change to current definition, that better reflects the current two- and three-wheel motorcycle landscape. Crash Avoidance: Continue to promote the theme of crash avoidance versus safer crashing urging NHTSA and the DOT to focus on crash prevention and rider education. Helmet Laws: Oppose any mandatory federal helmet, apparel or conspicuity standards. Black Box: Pursue legislative language that any collected or available vehicle data is the property of the consumer and in which the consumer has the choice to opt-out of having their personal data communicated to interested parties. Surface Transportation Reauthorization (Highway Bill): Advocate and pursue legislative efforts that impact motorcyclists in the Highway Bill, now set to expire in 2021. Additionally, new topics were added to the broader agenda including threats to the internal combustion engine, lane splitting and potential changes to transportation taxes. Sounds like a pretty solid organization, right? You obviously need to be a part of the MRF family, right? Not only do you ensure your two-wheeled freedoms by joining (did I mention membership is as low as $35 per year?) but as part of your MRF membership you receive Riding Free from D.C., a weekly update from Your Washington, D.C. Lobbyist, an automatic $4,000 AD&D insurance policy, reduced rates to rider conferences and events, copies of the bi-monthly magazine connecting you with riders across America, legislative alerts and calls to action as events warrant, and access to both State and Federal legislative tracking software. No other motorcycling organization out there is a better place to spend your hard-earned dollars on membership than the MRF. It is where Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa chooses to contribute and you should too. If you have questions about joining, just shoot them our way. We would be happy to help you get signed up. If you would rather go it on your own, you can contact the D.C. office at (202) 546-0983 or visit mrfoffice@mrf.org. You can also print a membership application on the website https://mrf.org/jointhe-mrf and mail the completed document to Motorcycle Riders Foundation P.O. Box 250 Highland, IL 62249. There has also been a form you can cut out and fill out in the past dozens of issues of TRMI. When you get to the referred by line, enter Vernon, Melanie, Christy, or Eric and then we get credit for helping the cause! Make your voice heard on a national level with the Motorcycle Riders Foundation…and tell ‘em Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa sent you when ya do! Melanie and Vernon

Cover girl Eleanor hails from the Quad Cities region, where she’s a familiar face at local car and bike events, and has made many print appearances including Natanic’s Pin-ups calendar this year, and again in the 2022 edition. The festive bar scene was provided by Jeff Grabau at his private party pad cleverly named Nub’s Bar and Microwave, where he’s hosted some knock-down drag out parties, and the real trick is to find the microwave! Paul Fosdyck’s 1951 Hummer is on display at Nub’s, making it an easy choice next to the Christmas tree for Eleanor’s photos, and this single cylinder Harley also appears on the back cover of Natanic’s calendar this year. Natanic’s calendars are “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” throughout the month of December, so be sure to order yours right away. But this deal is strictly for online orders only at Natanic.com

We are told that the Sigourney Cafe is known for its popular daily specials. Each day they offer two special entrees, a special burger, sandwich, or a salad. They also have many signature specials that aren’t on the menu. Local favorites include stir-fry, Mexican specialties, and spaghetti with homemade meatballs. The Saturday when we visited the specials were country fried steak and BBQ ribs. Karla chose to order the country fried steak special, the crispy breaded steak arrived with creamy mashed potatoes and the whole works was covered in pepper gravy. She also had a fresh, crisp, side salad and a scoop of birthday cake ice cream to round out her meal. Mark couldn’t resist the breakfast lure and opted for the Sunrise Special. This breakfast bonanza consisted of 2 eggs cooked over easy, 2 619 E Jackson St. Sigourney, IA 52591 sausage links, 2 crispy bacon strips, golden hash browns and 2 fluffy malted pancakes. Vernon also succumbed to (641) 224-8096 sigourneycafe@gmail.com the breakfast menu and ordered up the country fried steak Sunday – Thursday 6:00 am - 8:00 pm breakfast. It was the same deliciously crispy breaded steak Friday – Saturday 6:00 am - 9:00 pm and pepper gravy that Karla received, but this time came with two eggs perfectly cooked to over medium and a pile Vernon and I took off on a Saturday afternoon with of those delicious golden brown hashbrowns. A side of the intention of doing nothing but goofing off. This is wheat toast and jelly was also included in Vernon’s meal. I something that we rarely get the opportunity to do, but when went out in left field and searched for something different. offered the chance to meet up with our dear friends Mark I chose the Beef Eater. It is a sandwich composed of roast and Karla (you know these guys…they are on the CMA beef, mushrooms, onions, and Swiss cheese all piled on page, and work hard each month to provide us all with Texas Toast. So, are a flavorful compliment to the thick Texas Toast. I got at the stroke of noon, we locked the doors at the shop and French fries as a side, and they were crisp on the outside, busted tail to Hayesville, Iowa where Mark and Karla were tender potato pillows on the inside, and perfectly salty next anxiously awaiting our arrival. to my sandwich.

Sigourney Cafe

Well, maybe not anxiously, but I may sometimes like to think that people are a little more keyed up to see me than they truly are…Vernon calls this me being “dramatic”. Anyway, we rolled into this unassuming parking lot and perused a cool gun shop for a while. We saw a lot of awesome weapons and made the purchase of a lifetime in that little shop. Spoiler alert…one of our friends is getting the ultimate gift this Christmas!

The food was certainly good, and sharing the meal with friends was priceless. Maybe we will stop back sometime and I can fall victim to the breakfast menu and have some French toast…it certainly looks delicious.

After spending some time in Hayesville, we headed on down the road to Sigourney to grab a bite before parting ways. Since the Sigourney Cafe was recently voted one of Iowa’s 99 ‘must try’ restaurants by the Des Moines Register and Travel Iowa, we figured it was the perfect place to grab a seat. The café specializes in comfort food and breakfast and offers bottomless cups of steaming hot coffee. The restaurant has the inviting atmosphere that only a small-town cafe in Iowa can provide. The waitstaff quickly seated us and took our drink orders while we looked over the menus. There are daily specials to choose from, and with a slogan like, “Where breakfast is served all day because it’s just that good”, you can’t go wrong with a little breakfast for supper.

About Motorcycle Profiling

It is unusual to get quick results from participation in a conference or meeting. Most folks who attended the Meeting of the Minds conference in Atlanta were expecting to review a lot of information they’ve heard before and learn a few new tidbits. However, during the breakout sessions with the Motorcycle Clubs, many folks learned for the first time that the survey at the Motorcycle Profiling Project (http://www. motorcycleprofilingproject.com) is not a one-and-done thing. Each year the questions are a bit different and the survey needs folks to participate annually to keep its accuracy rating. The result of folks learning this was hundreds of new survey entries recorded just during Meeting of the Minds. This is excellent, but we need to keep it going. The Motorcycle Profiling Project needs about 10,000 people a year to take that survey. It takes less than a minute to complete and doesn’t even ask if you’ve been profiled. It asks what area you’re from and asks if you believe there should be legislation regulating the profiling of motorists based on what they wear or what they drive. Now I’m sure there are some reading this that feel that profiling is something that only happens to other people. They aren’t affected so going to a website to take a survey sounds about as entertaining as going to a dentist. The thing is, profiling and discrimination can and will bleed beyond the MC community. Waco/ Twin Peaks saw civilians with their lives tuned upside down along with the targeted club members. We are all impacted by profiling, even when it only targets the MC community. Case in point, the Street Vibrations rally (https://www.facebook.com/ StreetVibrationsMotorcycleRally/ ) in Reno NV this year. As we go over these facts, remember that “state actor discrimination” is illegal, meaning it Is not legal 30 - TRMI DECEMBER 2021

for a government agency to tell a business who they can or cannot serve.

Street Vibrations is a popular rally bringing bikers together and creating tourism business for the local economy in Reno. As with all motorcycle rallies, there are businesses who plan all year for this event so that they can earn what they need to keep going or get ahead for the coming year. Since this event has them working outside the boundaries of their regular business license, businesses are required to obtain a Special Use Permit for the event. There was a recorded meeting held for businesses applying for the permit which went well, but afterward the businesses received a call advising them that no clubs would be allowed and that they would be required to post “No Motorcycle Colors Allowed” as a condition of the permit. Also, that failure to comply would result in their permit being revoked, which they feared could reflect onto their regular business license. Best of all, this information was dropped on them only about a week before the event. There was concern throughout as one business estimated that as much as 40% of their revenue during the event came from the MC community. One major supporting business of the event withdrew their application for the Special Use Permit. Another business asked for documentation of the call, in writing. That business received a letter restating the “No Colors” requirement. These requirements were in spite of the fact that past events had not had an issue with clubs and the clubs had not caused any issues at the events. In response, local MC members obtained legal representation. So, with less than a week to the event, a letter was sent to the city requesting a reversal of the policy or

injunctive relief would be sought. The City Attorney responded that nothing would be done as they had not followed the appeal procedure and requested this at a hearing. Since the next hearing would not be until two weeks after the event, a decision was made to pursue injunctive relief. Before injunctive relief could be requested, the city sent out a letter to the business that applied for the Special Use Permit stating that the “No Colors” requirement was being dropped, but that businesses should still consider doing it voluntarily as Motorcycle Clubs are violent and dangerous. The MC members will continue to pursue action against the government for distributing accusations about violence or danger, without substantiation. In the end the event was held and as usual. Of course, with the exception of the business that withdrew their application for the Special Use Permit. This business, a local Harley Davidson dealership, then had to sit and watch others collect what could have been their revenue. Lawsuits for the losses are being considered by this business.

fact that they would threaten the licensing of those businesses is appalling. The fact that it was a segment of the motorcycling community that was targeted is why we must band together to fight things like this. Once the city, state or nation wins one fight against our rights, they are emboldened to take it on to the next group. Eventually, our individuality along with everything else we love about our lifestyle will be taken away, piece by piece. This brings us back to where we started. Do we support the right of a business to tell us we can’t come in if they don’t want our business? Of course! It’s a free country and they can self-destruct if they choose. But it is wrong for the government to tell them who they can or cannot serve based on the fact they ride a motorcycle or wear a patch. Please go to the Motorcycle Profiling Project website and take that 1-minute survey, even if you have in the past. Take the survey every year! You are saving the rights of every motorcyclist and the businesses that work with and love us.

Seven The fact that a city would step up and try to tell local businesses who they can do business with is scary. The RoadRunners MC Wisconsin

trees all over our home. There is a traditional main tree that is her favorite, the gathering of our families’ memories over the years, always added to, like each holiday memory to any family, the bedroom tree which is filled with just our memories, the girls have each a tree, there was a NAVY tree when my son was serving, now it’s an Air Force tree for him, boat trees, lighthouse trees, an antler tree, and more. It’s something of a tradition for which people, friends, and family come over for cheer and to view. I Oh, the holiday season is upon us. Sure, it’s not the correct am told we are adding a new tree, or maybe it’s a rehabbed tree, it will feature Jeep shit. I don’t EVER complain about thing to say but Merry Christmas dammit or happy Hanthe trees, it makes our house amazing and different, I can’t nukah, Season’s Greetings etc. etc. etc. Blah, blah, blah. imagine our home for the holidays not jammed with lights. Quick point, if you are offended by Merry Christmas, a dedicated Federal Holiday, you can make sure to show up It’s really cozy, you may think it’s too many until you see it, then you do and most to work on the 25th while the rest of think, wow, that is a shit us deal with the commercial over kill load of trees but it works. of the day, the eggnog hangover, and the dedicated day drinking that many The decorations are just a will take part in because, well, we can small part of what makes and we will be doing all the holiday the holiday season, hoplove shoved down our collective North ing this year my boy Poles. Or is it shoved UP our North makes it home for a few Poles? days from the service, at this point it’s a long We know we will spend too damn shot, but we hope for much money on shit we don’t really the chance, all military need, our kids, grandkids, or whatever families do of course, don’t really need and that day you start but if not, we can at least to wonder, why in the hell do we do Facetime. this every damn year?

Holly Jolly Fa La La and Pass the damn Tylenol!

Okay, let’s lay it out on the table for just a quick hot minute. I actually love the Christmas season, I really do. Our damn house is the Christmas house, we really tear it up in style and will welcome plenty of folks to come over and warm their cackles around our Yule Log this year like we do every year. We put up a huge outdoor holiday exterior illumination project that takes days to implement, 17 miles of damn extension cords, miles and miles of lights, all synched up to 22 Trans-Siberian Orchestra songs, loud speaker and you can even sit in your car and listen to it via a low power FM transmitter, we legit do not screw around. Wanna test a marriage, hang up that many Christmas lights as a family. Survive that and you are golden. Like a shower. But that is just the outside. We have cars that come by all the time to watch the display. It’s kind of neat to see the little kids’ faces as it plays on and heck, many times we have hooked up a kid with a hot cocoa or homemade sugar cookie. A few years ago, I was really getting tired of the entire process until a young kid, maybe 8 or 9 told me one hot summer day that he looks forward to coming by every year and seeing what’s new, it’s his and his little sisters favorite place to drive by every Christmas. I guess it’s not just for my family but we do it for a lot of families. Pain in the ass? I guess maybe, but it’s neat to come up with new twists all the time and add more to it, also helps that the band TSO gave me all the electronics to make it happen, so there is that. Of course, the outside is nothing compared to what goes on inside our Christmas home, and this credit all goes to my bride and her vision. I never imagined that her vision would include 13 trees. Yes, 13 FULL SIZED Christmas 32 - TRMI DECEMBER 2021

For a lot of people this will be a different year because all we keep hearing about is supply issues, shortages, inflation, and more. I like to point out your American Made products you can give for gifts aren’t stuck on a ship off the coast of California, do keep that in mind. We have amazing advertisers on these pages, support them, need an idea? Grab a gift card or certificate to any of the cool bars, eating places, bike shops, taverns, or whatever to give. Support local, it does matter a great deal. Many times, over the years I have been welcomed to crank out articles for the greatest biker magazine I have ever been a part of, Thunder Roads Iowa, I have whipped out some fun, different ideas for gifts to give the biker on your Christmas list, maybe a retainer to one of the law firms that have spots on these pages? I mean, shit happens to all of us, right? But I am trying to look at things in a better, clearer light this holiday season and maybe it’s because I am older or maybe that my kids are nearing the end of the High School endeavors, whatever the case may be, to not get so caught up on all the shit you think you need from Santa, or Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo or the like. Sure, trust me, Santa will still come to our house, hell we have 13 damn trees and an LED runway in the front yard, trust me, he stops by. But do they really need all the crap anymore? I know I don’t need anything, when asked recently I couldn’t think of a single thing I really needed. I really have more shit that I could ever need in my life, I am blessed. My kids and bride have never been in the place where they have been without. We always have whatever

we need. Sure, we worked our asses off, but we have never EVER wondered where our next meal would come from, if we had decent clothes for school or work, or anything of that nature. I have tried to spread that message, look, we have enough, instead of money on presents, let’s do an adventure, take a trip, go seeking adventure somewhere. So far, I am losing that discussion but it doesn’t mean I won’t keep trying dammit. A wise man once said “how many guns do you own?” “More than I need, but not as many as I want”. I guess if push comes to shove, Santa could bring me something, I wear a size 9mm. The holiday season really comes down to what we make of it. Time with family and time with friends last much longer than stuff bought and wrapped under the tree, if you can, spread some joy, spread some smiles, spread some libations and have a great holiday season. Don’t worry about the little details, it will all work out. Never sweat the petty and never pet the sweaty or something like that and have that extra eggnog or sugar cookie and have a great Christmas season. And if Santa doesn’t bring you a gun or a bike, screw him, go get your own. Todd “Crash” Davis
