The only thing hotter than the Iowa sun this month is Meckensie and Taylor. This duo braved the scorching heat to show off the bad ass new 2019 Harley Davidson Soft tail and custom rifle that are up for grabs in addition to an aluminum trailer this Labor Day weekend at the Midway Tavern Rally. These are the prizes this year from the raffle tickets sold during the summer. The number of tickets available is limited, so if you are interested in snagging one, call (712) 884-2230. The drawing will be held at the party in Soldier on September 1st at 9 PM. The gals are posed next to the newest Veteran’s memorial in Soldier. Called “No Man Left Behind”, this new addition to the Soldier monuments was purchased with proceeds from previous rallies. The Midway Tavern Soldier Valley Run, BBQ, Street Dance is held August 31st – Sep 2nd in Soldier, Iowa at the junction of Highways 37 and 183. It is a great place to gather and ride the scenic Loess Hills of western Iowa. This Labor Day make your way to Soldier and try your luck at winning one of these beauties…and no, I don’t mean the ladies!

We just returned home from our ride to J&P’s annual Open House. Seventeen bikes in our group with the weather and the other challenges that accompany riding with that many others. On the one hand the event was a bit disappointing: the crowd was way down, no free lunch this year, not many vendors and basically a long way from its heyday when John Parham was alive and well. On the other hand it was good because the Swap Meet and Vintage Rally were moved to the same weekend and took place next to the national Motorcycle Museum. Kind of took some of the sting away from the hot, muggy trip up and back. On the other, other hand, the crowds were in in the restaurants soaking up the a/c and contributing to hour-long waits for food but the museum temperature was cool and comfortable. If you have never been to the museum take the time and go. You will not be disappointed. It is enjoyable to see all the bikes you may have had in the past, the ones you remember, or the ones you just dreamed about.

Make sure it has Lane Changing Death Lazers! Technology is moving at a pace nobody can really fathom and keep ahead of. We are talking about the rise of the machines, and it is occurring at a wild level right now. Robots are building everything. Each week a new video comes out showing a robot doing more and more human things, we even have companies creating selfdriving cars for some damn reason. Because we can’t get enough truck drivers they tell us, they are creating self-driving semis, sure, what the hell could go wrong there? Think about this, all those self-driving semis have to be controlled by a computer, those can be hacked. For every Elon Musk, genius good guys, how are we sure there isn’t an EVIL genius plotting some diabolical plan to hack into self-driving vehicles and control all kinds of shit? Sure, that might be far-fetched and looking to the future with a jaundice eye, and yes, I have from time to time, looked at things a bit differently…but think about this. A few years ago, Tesla (the car company, not the kick ass rock band) got a less than stellar review from Consumer Reports about the braking distance of a certain model of car. Now, in the good old days a car manufacturing company would just ride it out, make an adjustment on the next year’s model or possibly issue an expensive recall, where every vehicle would have to come back to the dealership to have whatever issue addressed. Tesla? Recall? Oh hell no, Elon just created a “patch” overnight, and every single model received a down load “fix” overnight, making the braking of said car quicker. Easier than downloading an app, it was done. Again, he is on our side…we think, but imagine if it were to be hacked that easily and boom every car suddenly stopped with a download. Or made to speed, or the brakes simply wouldn’t respond! That technology exists right now and thankfully, it’s all been used for good so far as we know. But, shouldn’t we have some safety precautions in place just in case? We have hybrid cars, trucks, and SUVs as a component of the mainstream now and they (for the most part) are pretty kick ass. Every year, they get better and better. Possessing more power, better mileage, and reliability. And it’s not just a single manufacturing company, all of them are doing it and it’s really become the norm. But, what does the future bring for Bikes? What does the future of motorcycling riding look like? Bleak. Bleak for several reasons, and the biggest reason is the amount of money it takes for the innovation at hand to simply translate into dollars (sales). Companies create innovation in order to generate dollars and without an end result of increased dollars, I worry that innovation will lag in the biking world. Maybe, I could be wrong. We have seen a nice tech bump in bikes the last few years, mostly involving an outward technologically

advanced look. GPS integration systems, touch screens, seamless connectivity between our phones and our bikes, self-adjusting suspensions and more. Hell, even keyless operation is no becoming normal. Whether we like that part of not, it’s here. Remember the old days when you radio would go out and you could swap it yourself, and the weekend rolled on? Now if that system fails, it might end up preventing your bike from even STARTING. Good times, good times. But look back on bikes and you will see that so much of this is new, no matter than brand, within the last decade. These machines are very integrated, all parts working together, (mostly better) as innovation continues. Safety features are always being worked on. Developing ways to make bikes safer and ways to avoid accidents to protect the riders and passengers are usually on the front burner for companies. They are working on accident avoidance tech for bikes, similar to what our cars have, ways to keep the rider more aware of the surroundings, many companies are perfecting an electric bike and hybrids will surely be next. I am a fan of electric on many levels, but I do understand its shortcomings. Between the weight of the batteries, the range and charging times are still an issue that not only bikes will need to overcome, but car companies as well. Battery cell tech will catch up, but it might be longer for it to reach bikes. The other electric bike issue? Sound/feel. We ride because we love the rumble right? We know shits all good and right in the world when you click that starter on and the internal combustion in your pistons happens and the sparking explosions fire that machine with a feeling that goes directly to your loins and brings a smile to your soul. You won’t replicate that feeling with an electric motor. Chatting with one of my kids (the 15 year old) recently about the future, our kids we know are way smarter than we will ever be, the information the next generation has daily access to is mind blowing, like what we can do with intel that our parents never had a chance to. Not saying they have more common sense or even how to USE all of this information…just saying that they know more about stuff than we did at the same age. So, I was talking to Simone (that is what I call her because that is her name) about future cars and she said, “I wonder if the future will even have dirt bikes, you know, as we know it. Or will they be like small hovercrafts that glide over the ground, roads or tracks.”. Holy, F words over and over. Do you think that is a future? Yes, hovercraft style technology. Drone style operation for transportation is happening now. Some of this is happening on the very basic level, with mechanical nerds in a shop, creating and using technology to adapt to a widespread use on a hobby level. It might just happen, she might be onto something. Hell, I’ve seen in person a hovercraft golf cart, my local fire department has a hovercraft boat, so how long before it’s down to a smaller, off road personal use version similar to a dirt bike? It is likely already being worked on! When I was a farm boy in Iowa, there wasn’t such a thing as the internet. We had magazines, kick ass mags, similar to what you are looking at right now, that would come into our home and open the world up…and I was a Popular Mechanics JUNKIE! Dad would get it, it

was his demand that he read it first, but then it was mine. Hell, many times I would have to remind him to read the damn thing so I could get my hands on it! They often talked about what cars would look like in the future and I remember them talking about future, self-driving cars, all the damn time and now it’s upon us. I also remember them talking about how easy it would be in the future to have your own small personal helicopter, and yea, I am still holding out for that. But there are so many things that we thought were way down the road when we were kids that are happening right now. I mean, who would have EVER pictured a water cooled Harley? We have a few joys that bikes bring us that will be hard to replace. We have earned our stripes working on them in our garage ourselves. We need that feel of the tires connecting to the road, the rumble that stirs our loins and souls when we swing over a leg, the stuff that futuristic bikes would be hard pressed to replicate. And the joy at the end of the ride is one of the reasons we do what we do. Some things I guess are already damn near perfect. We cannot stop technology from moving forward, we all know that. But how we adapt, how we move forward, and how we embrace it remains to be seen. I want that feel to remain that I get when I ride, but I am not opposed to new technology at all. I mean, if the new models would feature some sort of “laser death ray” for tailgaters and assholes that cut us off, I guess that might be something I could embrace. Each month the military rider page is devoted to an individual who chose to spend a portion of his or her life defending our great nation and preserving our freedoms. Most of the time we like to talk about upcoming adventures these patriotic riders are planning to experience, or maybe some stellar upgrades they will be making to their twowheeled loves. This month I will take a different approach, a look back if you will at a man who is very well known on the western side of the state and beyond. This go-around I would like to tell you a little bit about a man who was a friend to all who darkened his doorway at the top of that famous hill in Soldier. Today let us take a minute or two to reflect on the man formally known as Steven Clark Harris…. or “Hairball” as the rest of us rif-raff knew him.

us came to know “Hairball”. In 1991 Hairball purchased the Midway Tavern and was immediately embedded in the heart of western Iowa biker life. He saw his patrons’ love for motorcycling and realized that it rivaled his own passion for two-wheeled freedom. Steve loved riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle wherever it would take him. In fact, over the years he owned nothing but Harleys, yet he never turned away anyone on two wheels, no matter the brand. He loved spending his time with family, friends, and the friends that became family at the Midway. Steve was always a generous man, with a desire to provide for others like the Soldier Valley Fire Departments through his many years of annual Memorial Day and Labor Day rallies, as well as the veterans memorials adjacent to the Tavern.

Steven Clark Harris graduated from East Monona High School in 1970. After graduation, Steve enlisted in United States Air Force in March of 1972. He completed his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX where he was trained as an aircraft mechanic. After Texas, he moved on to March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA where he received his orders for Thailand in June of 1972. This happened to be during the Vietnam War, and Steve served for two and a half years in Southeast Asia as the Crew Chief on B-52s. By the time his military career had come to an end, he had served as Assistant Crew Chief on a total of fifteen different bases around the world. When all was said and done, Steve came home with an honorable discharge and rank of E-4 Sergeant in October of 1975. After the military, Steve had a number of jobs, including helping his father on the farm, construction, truck driving, dispatching, and even worked at the grain elevator in Mapleton before he landed atop that big hill where most of www.thunderroadsiowa.com 22 - TRMI AUGUST 2019

When the Founders designed the political structure of our country, one priority rose above all others: Americans do not have a king. The Founders faced an impossible task in creating a whole new system of government from scratch, however, and some pieces of the laws of kings transferred from the British to us. One of those pieces of British law that we’ve been stuck with is called Sovereign Immunity. The idea is none can bring legal action against the king, unless the king specifically gives permission. Sovereign Immunity, in essence, uses the law to put the king above the law. In Iowa, Sovereign Immunity is expressed through a law call the Tort Claims Act. This law is how our state government shields itself from being held responsible for doing the exact same things that would land you or me in hot water. For the last several legislative sessions, I’ve watched in horror and disgust as the state legislature has further narrowed Iowa’s legal accountability for the harm it does to its own citizens.

company disregards something the law commands us to do, and when our disregard causes someone else to be harmed, we are held financially responsible for the harm we caused. You break it, you buy it. Unless you’re the government. In the Johnson case, a majority of Iowa Supreme Court justices decided that the state would adopt what is ironically called the Public Duty Doctrine. This doctrine decrees that when the state has a duty to do something for the good of everyone, no individual person can sue the state for harm caused by failing to perform the duty. In other words, a duty owed to everyone is a duty to no one.

This law has already hurt one of us. Many of who you probably know a friendly guy named Mark who can be found at most Iowa rallies. He has allowed me to tell you some of his story, to help drive home how much the Public Duty Doctrine hurts us. Last winter, as Mark was driving south on 380 from Waterloo, he encounter a stretch of highway that was literally crumbling to pieces and had been for a while. One of those pieces, weighing about 10 pounds, Here’s a brief list of examples of things you CANNOT sue got tossed up by a van passing Mark. Quite possibly because any interference with contract rights. the government, under the Tort Claims Act, was already immune from lawsuits for harm caused by the government This list could go on and on, but I’ve only got about failing to maintain the road. 1,000 words to work with here, and if I were to provide a complete list of what how your government can harm you When it comes to the deceptively-named Public Duty without ever being held accountable to you personally, that Doctrine, we have a chance to get rid of it. And since the legislature weren’t the ones who rolled what I really want to talk about. out the Public Duty Doctrine in the first place, they just might listen if enough of us tell them that the doctrine is Not only legislatures create law. Think back to 2012, what were your thoughts as you woke up or went through your daily routine? For an average of 22 veterans and active military members, their thoughts were to end their lives. Fast forward to 2013 when 22Kill became a social media movement trying to raise awareness of a problem that many people we were yet unaware of. 2015 came around and 22Kill became a nonprofit, in 2016 social media became flooded with people challenging others to do 22 push-ups for 22 days to help raise awareness and promote suicide prevention. By the end of 2016 22Kill had raised half a million dollars for veteran service organizations. Since then the number has dropped to 19.8. 22Kill focuses on raising awareness and combating suicide by empowering veterans, first responders, and their families through both traditional and non-traditional therapies. 22Kill is based in Texas, but has advocates all over the United States to help those seeking help. I got the chance to sit down with one of their advocates, Holly Phelps. Holly has been married to an active member of the National Guard for 14 years. Holly works closely with 22Kill to raise awareness and is hoping to help 22Kill branch out by opening new chapters across the county. Her main focus is to bring awareness and have resources readily available to veterans, as Cedar Rapids and Iowa as a whole doesn’t have a lot or resources for those in need. One of the biggest challenges that veterans face is finding a sense of purpose after their military service is over. 22Kill has a huge network of organizations throughout the United States. Not only their own programs, but also external resources designed to help these men and women realize that they still do have a purpose. Holly would love to be able to bridge the gap between all veterans, as they often search for the brotherhood like they had while in the service. Holly has set a goal of opening a 24 hour Iowa chapter for 22Kill where all veterans can go to talk, find brotherhood, and host veterans’ events. Right now Holly is hard at work planning the annual golf outing to raise money for 22Kill and is also planning a poker run that is scheduled to leave a local Harley-Davidson dealership on August 31st. All the money from these events goes back to 22Kill, so that they can send veterans and their families to events and to Camp Vallhalla in Texas where they can take part in both traditional and non-traditional therapies. I recently read with interest Cameron “Cam” Leehey’s take on the judicial system in Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa. Now, this is a magazine written by bikers and for bikers, so a lot of this stuff about the legal system may or may not be of much interest to the larger biker community; however, as we are constantly reminded, we are a society of laws and the evolution of the law, how it is enacted, interpreted and applied, is insipidly creeping into our lives, so we do need to pay attention to it. What Cam was talking about is his perception of the justice system both civil and criminal, at the local level, otherwise known as trial law. Cam is correct that the system we have is the best that has ever been devised so far. He is also right that it is flawed; especially on the criminal side of the ledger where the outcome of justice can so easily be swayed by perception and the evidence a jury is allowed to see or not see as is often the case. It is good in the sense that evidence may or may not be allowed depending upon its net effect on the jury’s decision on the law (a violation having occurred or not) but as we have become less and less isolated among our peers, perception is often unavoidable and comes down to public relations, which unfortunately often cannot be controlled and leaves us to the mercy of the court. More often than not, unfortunately, this narrative (the mercy of the courts) is controlled by the value one is seen to have in society at large. In other words, it comes down to money. My agreement with Cam, however, ends there or as Samuel L. Jackson’s character in “Pulp Fiction” so eloquently said, ‘well allow me to retort.’

that follows this system and that is Louisiana. I’m not sure how Wisconsin came to be on the same page as Louisiana and frankly, researching that and reporting it here would probably bore most of the readers. But it does bear mention that Louisiana law is often referred to as a “Napoleonic” system of law or the Napoleonic Code, which was written in 1804 and modified the French system of law that is in many respects still followed there today, within the framework of the U.S. Constitution. Oh, by the way, the Greek system described by Cam was only used in the citystate of Athens. Other Greek city-states, like Sparta for example, had different and more elaborate systems, a situation that similarly exists among the states in the United States. The only importance this has to the argument is that Wisconsin’s system is modeled after or like a system that is not of our own making and if the U.S. system, in the majority of states, is the best ever, that kind of cuts against the grain, does it not? Merica!

Let me get back to the logical fallacy part of Cam’s premise. Cam says that the real defendant in a civil trial is the insurance company. His basis for this is that it is the insurance company’s money that will pay the damages owed to the plaintiff rather than the defendants themselves and that because of that, the insurance company calls the shots. This is only partly true and appears to be a little bit of legal chicanery on Cam’s part. The insurance company may ultimately pay the damages; however, the insurance company never caused the damages being claimed in the first place. They have no control over the actions that led to the accident; therefore, the civil claim and lawsuit, if there Cam’s ultimate position was that we need to change Iowa’s is one, is most properly brought by the person damaged civil trial system to mirror that of Wisconsin. The premise against the person who allegedly caused the damage. The of the position was that our trial system is flawed because insurance policy is nothing more than a contract that agrees the true defendant wasn’t on trial at all. Rather, the true to pay, within its limits, for the liability of the person or defendant was the insurance company who insures the persons that the policy insures. An insurance policy does person allegedly responsible for the accident. Now, if you’re not and can’t take the place of or substitute for the person even minimally astute at critical reasoning or logic, the against whom the claim is made. fallacy of that premise is obvious but unfortunately critical reasoning and logic aren’t subjects that receive much focus All of this is notwithstanding that this insurance coverage in our educational systems anymore, including apparently, is mandated by law in all 50 states of the United States. It is our law schools. a public policy to have the coverage and it is not voluntary. The fact that a person has or does not have insurance Wisconsin’s system for civil trials is not the only system coverage is not excluded from a jury on the basis that it may of its kind in the United States. There is one other state alter perception of a person’s willingness or ability to pay, it 30 - TRMI AUGUST 2019

It is also true that sometimes these decisions the lawyer therefore works for the insurance company and are perhaps contrary to what you may want; however, not the person being sued. It is true that part of most liability I think it’s safe to assume you wouldn’t want someone insurance policies is the obligation to defend the insured having authority to write checks from your checkbook if the party in a civil lawsuit when the claims being made against situation were reversed, right? the insured are covered by the policy. This is an obligation on the insurer. It is part of what you pay for when you buy As far as calling the shots, I can assure you that the people a liability insurance policy. It is a benefit and a good one responsible for handling the claim at the insurance company at that. In many cases, the cost of a lawyer to defend you have at least 3-4 times more cases to deal with than the against a lawsuit is far greater than the damages ultimately lawyer. The front-line men and women doing this work owed to the person suing and on most insurance policies, have absolutely no interest in anything other than finding there is no limit on how much an insurer must pay for the right solution and getting their workload decreased. this. If this were not a benefit provided by the insurance Capricious denials of claims, especially given there are company, it would be very convenient indeed for a sharplawyers like Cam out there, would not assist in this goal. tongued lawyer to call you up and convince you that you If the insured was wrong and owes the claim, insurance must pay his/her client who you’ve injured and that if he/ adjusters want to settle and get their insured out of harm’s she sues you, it will be costly for you to dispute what you way; hopefully, without a lawsuit needing to be filed. For owe or if you owe anything at all. The power behind being various reasons, this sometimes becomes difficult. able to sue someone cannot be overstated and while we’re at it, people should also know that in our legal system, “the Sometimes the injured party may think their claim is best ever,” there is really no consequence to a lawyer who worth way more than it is (thinking about the McDonald’s sues people or companies with little or no basis for doing coffee spill case or some other aberrant result they’ve so. heard about) or they have a grudge. In Cam’s defense, if he takes that case, it is his absolute duty to represent that Here is another inconvenient truth. Of all lawsuits filed in client as vigorously as possible within the law but that this country, which are defended by legal counsel provided doesn’t change the fact that at some point the matter will by insurance companies, only about 3% actually go to be resolved one way or the other. By the same token, the trial, which means that 97% are settled out of court. What lawyer hired to represent the insured party is ethically does this mean for Joe Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa bound to provide the same vigorous representation of Reader? Let me give you a common lawyer answer, “it the party he or she is hired to represent, even if he or she depends.” For a defendant, a settlement out of court is a knows that the case is an ultimate loser. The insurance good thing. There is no judgment against you and nothing adjuster or company cannot get in the way of the attorney’s that can be held against you in the legal sense, ever again. If representation. The insured party is the lawyer’s client. you’re the injured party, a settlement out of court means that The insurance company adjuster’s job, however, is to find you get your money without having to ask 6 to 12 strangers a reasonable resolution to the dispute within the coverage to determine what you should be paid or if you should be provided by the policy, even if for no other reason than it paid at all. All good, right? makes good business sense. If insurance companies paid everyone what they want, the cost of buying that coverage However, if you hired a lawyer to represent you, most likely would be unaffordable. The same would be true if insurance you’re going to lose 1/3 (or more) of the money you’re companies fought everything tooth and nail to the point of supposedly entitled to, right off the top. Now, lawyers will frivolity. There must be a balance, a trade off if you will. tell you that this is a fair deal because they’re the ones taking the risks and “fighting for your rights,” etc. But how In this sense, lawyers and insurance companies can, much risk is there, really, when the vast majority of cases and probably should, within ethical boundaries, work in are settled without ever going to trial and how much time, concert to keep things on an even keel. Both insurance really, is the lawyer putting into the case for the rather large companies and lawyers, like Cam, are a necessity to keep chunk of the pie they’re taking out of what’s “rightfully” the scales of justice balanced. Sometimes this can be a very yours? Civil law or as it is called in most trials like we’re delicate balance because after all, it isn’t about the lawyer discussing here, tort law, is pretty cut and dried; for the most or the insurance company, it’s about the people affected, part they cover most of what lawyers need to know about it which ultimately is why our system of civil justice is set in the first year of law school and most of the work done on up (predominantly) the way that it is, and is a very good a case is usually done by a paralegal and not the lawyer but system. I agree, the best thus far devised. I don’t agree that under the supervision of the lawyer. This is a pretty good tinkering with the parties at interest would serve to benefit deal for the lawyers, and they know it. Most of them make a Iowans. pretty good living doing it. My final thought on the subject is to quote Abraham Now, back to those nasty insurance companies who are Lincoln, “Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to supposedly calling the shots. We already know that if compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the you’re unfortunately sued for something that perhaps wasn’t nominal winner is often a real loser – in fees, expenses, and your fault or wasn’t completely your fault, the insurance waste of time…” company is going to stand behind you and defend you against those claims. mention there is a daily special as well? As if there weren’t enough delicious choices to be found on the regular menu!

Backseat Diner and Drive In US Highway 169 Humboldt, Iowa 50548 (515) 332-1336 Open 7 days a week Monday - Saturday 6 am-8 pm Sundays 7 am-3 pm

Becca helped us by offering some mouthwatering suggestions, and we finally decided that we needed to make a decision. We gave her our choices, and after a short wait, our order arrived at the table in all of its burger-licious glory. Vernon chose the Backseat Supremo. His burger was a juicy 1/3-pound hand pattied and perfectly seasoned work of bacon cheeseburger art. It came with classic fixins like American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Vernon opted to exchange his fries for cheeseballs, and he wasn’t disappointed. The cheeseballs were a lightly breaded version of the classic and boy were they delicious. Real cheese curds to boot, not the cheaper processed cheese version some places have on the menu that are all sized and cut the same. His side of coleslaw should not be left out, as it was crisp and fresh and really hit the spot after a hot afternoon.

After a long, hot day at the Freedom Rally in Algona, Vernon and I decided to make a pit stop on our way home. Now, we have been patrons in this very establishment before, usually in the morning hours, and have always been seeking breakfast. Now, I won’t lie…despite the evening hours, I still looked long and hard at the breakfast options, as this place serves up a chicken fried steak breakfast that is worth slappin your momma for and biscuits and gravy that would leave even the pickiest palate happy. However, I had vowed to be different this go-around and I was determined to do so.

I chose to take a walk on the spicy side, and opted for the Jacked-Up Burger. This succulent 1/3-pound burger specimen was presented in all its spicy glory beside a mountain of onion strings. The burger was topped with pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and chipotle mayo. Devilishly spicy, this burger is not for fans of the bland. With its juicy burger and soft bun, the spice perfectly complemented this fiery menu option. The onion straws were a wonderful compliment to the burger, perfectly crispy, slightly sweet onions piled higher than the burger itself… with a nice cool side of ranch to balance it all out.

Our bubbly waitress Becca was quick to take our drink orders while we perused the menu. Vernon got a draught root beer so delicious that A & W would be ashamed. I chose a Neither one of us could get through the entire simple chocolate shake… plate, and at under eight bucks for each of our or so I thought. When meals, you know they are serving up generous the shake arrived at the helpings! Will I go back.... Without a doubt! Now table it was more like two. the only problem is, can I get biscuits and gravy The glass came fuller than as a side with my burger??? If I was looking for full, topped with whipped a menu choice to make my visits to the Backseat cream, a wafer cookie, and a easier, I failed. The delicious dinner side of the diner does cherry on top. Besides the heaping glass, was the remainder not disappoint, that is for sure. Maybe next trip I will just of the shake, enough to fill the glass again twice over with its have to hang around long enough to enjoy a couple of meals! chocolatey goodness. Next time you are in the area, swing by the Backseat Diner and tell them TRMI sent you! You won’t be disappointed! Now, the menu contains breakfast items like I previously mentioned, but there are also salad and wrap options, full Melanie J. Schwarte meal choices, appetizers, and of course…burgers. What self-respecting diner would present a menu without burger melanie@thunderroadsiowa.com options? There were classic meat and cheese combos, ginorAs always if you have some place in your neck of the woods mous double 1/3-pound options, and even a couple spicy you think we would enjoy shoot me an email at melanie@ options. All of which gave you the choice of French fries and coleslaw, or the option to substitute fries for cheese balls, thunderroadsiowa.com fried pickles, curly fries, onion strings, or poppers. George Phillips , an elderly man from Wall Lake, Iowa, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who ho asked “Is someone in your house?” ?” H Hee said “No,” but some people are breakreak re ak-ak ing into my garden shed and stealall ing from me. Then the police dispatcher said “All patrols are busy, you should lock your doors and an officer will be alongg when one is available” George said, id id, d, “Okay.” He hung up the phone aand nd counted to 30. Then he phoned the police again. “Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don’t have to worry about them now because I just shot them both and he hung up. Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips’ residence, and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George, “I thought you said that you’d shot them!” George said, “I thought you said there was nobody available!” Moral of the story, don’t mess with old people. A guy stuck his head into a barbershop and asked, “How long before I can get a haircut?” the barber looked around the ship full of customers and said, “About 2 Hours.” The guy left. A few days later, the same guy stuck his head in the door and asked, “How long before I can get a haircut?” The barber looked around at the shop and said, “About 3 hours.” The guy left. A week later, the same guy stuck his head in the shop and asked, “How long before I can get a haircut?” The barber looked around the shop and said, “About an hour and a half.” The guy left. The barber turned to his friend and said, “Hey, Bob, do me a favor, follow him and see where he goes. He keeps asking how long he has to wait for a haircut, but he never comes back.” A little while later, Bob returned to the shop, laughing hysterically. The barber asked, “So, where does he go when he leaves?” Bob looked up, wiped the tears from his eyes and said, “Your House!”. A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor’s office. “Is it true,” she wanted to know, that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?” “Yes, I’m afraid so,”’ the doctor told her. There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, “I’m wondering, then, just how serious is my condition because this prescription is marked ‘NO REFILLS’...” An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to get the anesthesia, he asked to speak to his son. “Yes, Dad, what is it?” 40 - TRMI AUGUST 2019

The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a tiny rat. He reaches into his other pocket and pulls out a tiny piano. The rat stretches, cracks his knuckles, and proceeds to play the blues. The man reaches into another pocket and pulls out a small bullfrog, which begins to sing along with the rat’s music. While the man is enjoying his free drinks, a stranger confronts him and offers him $400 for the bullfrog. “Sorry,” the man replies, “he’s not for sale.” The stranger increases the offer to $500 cash up front. “No,” he insists, “he’s not for sale.” The stranger again increases the offer, this time to $700 cash. The man finally agrees, and turns the frog over to the stranger in exchange for the money. “Are you insane?” the bartender demanded. “That frog could have been worth millions to you, and you let him go for a mere $700.” “Don’t worry about it.” the man answered. “The frog was really nothing special. You see, the rat’s a ventriloquist.” Our first day at a resort my wife and I decided to hit the beach. When I went back to our room to get something to drink, one of the hotel maids was making our bed. I grabbed my cooler and was on my way out when I paused and asked, “Can we drink beer on the beach?” “Sure,” she said, “but I have to finish the rest of the rooms first.” Why does it take longer to build a Blonde snowman? You have to hollow out the head. There was a cat by the lake and a sausage came floating by the cat put its paw in and wet its paw. Then a few minutes later a bigger sausage came floating by and the cat fell in. The moral of this story the bigger the sausage the wetter the pussy. What did one ass cheek say to the other? Oh My God! What’s that smell coming from the corridor. Q. What’s the difference between love and herpes? A. Love doesn’t last forever.

TRMI AUGUST 2019 - 41

On June 22nd, 2019 most of the motorcycling community awoke to the news of tragedy coming from the state of New Hampshire. Seven motorcycle fatalities and three motorcyclists still in critical condition. They are loved ones. Most were Marines that fought for our freedoms. Incidences like this haunt us all. Yet this was perhaps more hauntingly familiar to some Iowans. Why, you may ask. Because June 22, 2019 was the 17-year anniversary of a similar accident that impacted the lives of everyone here. “On June 22nd, 2002, six motorcyclists were riding from Ames to Anamosa. Just some old buddies and some open road. When on a stretch of highway a van drifted across the center line. Two bikers were critically injured and three were dead. Their lives could have been saved. How do I know, I was the only biker on that ride left standing.” A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa’s Share the Road public service announcement from Wayne Wierson. Hauntingly familiar between the two situations despite them occurring so many years apart. Yet for Iowa this was the catalyst for much needed changes and growth for education.

amounts to anywhere from 13,000 to 14,000 students. However, there are approximately 90,000 students that go through driver’s education in Iowa every year. There is so much room for growth to increase youth awareness of sharing the roadways with motorcycles. Yet it begs to question what about continuing education for adults? A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa’s Share the Road program has encouraged businesses, companies, and other groups that hold safety meetings to include our Share the Road program in their agendas. Refresher courses to correct the bad habits we develop behind the wheel are beneficial for all. The accident in New Hampshire and Iowa’s 2002 accident could have been avoided and lives could have been saved. I believe this statement wholeheartedly, because the more education we can provide the more vigilant the populous can become. So I pose the question to you, how are you willing to help educate the adult populous? How can you become involved to keep all motorcyclists safe on the roadways? If you are interested in having a presenter come in or are interested in becoming involved with the program yourself please feel free to go to A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa’s website, abateiowa.org, and contact D.L. Peterson or myself directly so we can hook you up.

While our Share the Road program has been around prior to Wayne’s incident it was not as widely utilized. I remember Ride Safe & Ride Free, this accident very vividly as just that spring I had completed Megan Eimers driver’s education. I remember being angry that there A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa, Asst. Share the Road Coordinator wasn’t much education for us, the youth, on becoming more vigilant on watching for motorcycles. Years later I was elated to hear the right of way violation bill had been passed into law but that it mandated a minimum of one hour motorcycle training of sorts in driver’s education. Yes, more training for our youth! Statistically speaking our program has roughly 40 presenters that travel to an average of 450 classrooms annually. This
