Your First Steps to becoming a lifeguard or Swim Instructor

Bronze Medallion REQUIRED

Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problemsolving skills needed to make good decisions in, on and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for Assistant Lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. This is a lifetime award. Must be able to swim 400m in 12 minutes by the end of the course.

Prerequisites:

Must be 13 years old (by last day of course) or hold Bronze Star (need not be current). Can be 12 years old if successfully completed Bronze Star. Includes: Lifesaving manual and pocket mask.

Total Training Hours: 20 Hours, classroom and water sessions

Bronze Cross REQUIRED

Bronze Star OPTIONAL

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. This is a lifetime award.

Prerequisites:

Recommend candidates can swim a minimum of 100 metres of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

Total Training Hours: 8 Hours all water sessions

Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross program begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as Assistant Lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for National Lifeguard (NL). This is a lifetime award. Must be able to swim 400m in 12 minutes by the end of the course.

Prerequisites: Must hold a Bronze Medallion (need not be current). Required: Lifesaving manual, pocket mask and whistle. Can be purchased if needed.

National lifeguard REQUIRED

The National Lifeguard Pool certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgement, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. The National Lifeguard course emphasizes the lifeguarding skills, principals and practices and decision making processes which will assist the lifeguard to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments. 100% attendance is required. Must be able to swim 400m in 10 minutes by the end of the course.

Prerequisites:

15 years old (by last day of course), Bronze Cross (need not be current), Standard First Aid (need not be current), *AMOA is taught within the NL Pool full course.

Includes: Alert Manual and whistle. Must bring pocket mask.

Total training Hours: 44 Hours, classroom and water sessions

Location: SEAPARC Leisure Complex Ages 15+

National lifeguard Re-certification (mandatory every 2 years)

Prerequisites: Must show proof of NL award

The National Lifeguard Pool re-certification is designed to practice and test the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards.
