HELPFUL HINTS

Refund Policy

In order to receive a full refund, requests must be received 72 hours prior to the program start date. Exceptions may be made for medical, relocation or other extenuating circumstances at the sole discretion of SEAPARC Leisure Complex. A $5 administration fee will apply to all approved refund requests with less than 72 hours notice.

Program Cancellations

Unfortunately, some programs may be cancelled. Reasons for cancellations may include low enrollment, availability of facilities, availability of instructors, or inclement weather. Refunds will be issued for programs cancelled by SEAPARC Leisure Complex.

Waitlists Work!

Have you ever tried to register for a program with no space available? Adding your name to a waitlist allows us to create new programs when possible and notify you when spaces become available.

Missed Classes

Classes missed by participants due to illness, vacation, or other special events will not be refunded or rescheduled.

Most programs are not scheduled to run on statutory holidays or long weekends. This will be noted on your registration confirmation.

LIFE (Leisure Involvement for Everyone) is designed to provide free and low cost recreation opportunities through the SEAPARC Leisure Complex for individuals and families on limited income. Individuals who live in Sooke or Juan de Fuca Electoral Area whose combined gross family income falls within or below the low income levels as recognized by Statistics Canada may apply. Application forms available at SEAPARC.

The SEAPARC Leisure Assistance Pass is for people with disabilities, of all ages, who require the assistance of a support person when engaging in leisure activities. Upon presentation of the pass at a participating venue, one support person will be given free or reduced admission; facilitating participation, while ensuring the person with a disability does not pay double for their admission. Application forms available at SEAPARC.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a national charitable program that provides financial assistance for children and youth (ages 4-18) to participate in more than 70 activities related to physical activity. Fore more details visit jumpstart.canadiantire.ca or call 1.844.YES.PLAY.

Kidsport provides grants to help cover the costs of registration fees so that all kids aged 18 and under in Greater Victoria can play a season of sport. The Greater Victoria chapter accepts applications and administers grants of up to $600 per child/year, for children and youth who live in any of the communities of the Capital Regional District. At SEAPARC Licensed Preschool we learn through play while:

• Exploring the great outdoors daily in all the variations of west coast weather

• Utilizing our surroundings here at SEAPARC including a fairy forest, swimming pool, nature trails, ice rink, turf field, creeks and the Sooke River

• Incorporating Physical Literacy (hopping, skipping, kicking, running, jumping, throwing & catching) to encourage kids to be active for life

A $50 non-refundable deposit is required at time of registration to reserve your child’s spot.

Eligible families may apply for the Affordable Child Care Benefit to help with the cost of child care

Love fitness through movement, play and FUN! Each unique workout is based on functional movements, reflecting the most important aspects of all sports and everyday activities. Learn proper for and gain strength, agility and confidence in this active alternative to sedentary after school activities.

Youth Weight Room Orientation Ages 13-15

This orientation will provide youth with an introduction on how to safely use a recreation centre weight room. Content will include: weight room guidelines and etiquette; cardio and weight training guidelines; orientation and instruction on how to use basic cardio and strength training equipment. Upon completion of this orientation, participants will receive a sticker which permits access to weight rooms at the following facilities: SEAPARC, Panorama, Esquimalt, City of Victoria, Saanich, West Shore and Oak Bay.

After school time and the occasional short outings for parents are easily dealt with when children are prepared. The main focus of the workshop is home and personal safety tips for dealing with emergency situations.

Red Cross Babysitters Course Ages 11+

Learn to care for children of various ages. Basic first aid and personal safety measures are emphasized throughout this workshop. Participants will also learn a variety of age appropriate games to give them the tools to be a great babysitter. A training manual is included in the course fee. A Red Cross Babysitters certification card will be provided upon successful completion of the course.

This class is suitable for those taking up golf for the first time or those looking to enhance their skills. Taekwondo Ages 5-13

Let your kids learn to kick, punch, block and eventually break boards in these fun and dynamic Taekwondo classes with Mijo Martial Arts. Olympic style Taekwondo is one of the most popular martial arts in the world and you can find out why in our dynamic, challenging and fun adults Taekwondo program with Mijo Martial Arts. Beginning at white belt, you train with a wide range of belt levels, learning the basics and technique of our curriculum based system, this includes: kicking, punching, blocking, hand strikes, self-defence and patterns. Aloha Fit Hawaiian Dance for Beginners

Ages 16+

Learn the basics of Hawaiian Dance, concentrating on learning hand, hip, and arm movements. We will learn choreographies where we gracefully move and sway to the music of Hawaii, Polynesia, Tahiti, and more, learning dance techniques such as the ami, tamua, afata, varu, and ope. This is a Hawaiian dance class for beginners with little or no experience.

Preschool 1

Skaters will be taught basic skating skills including: balancing on two feet, touching toes, walking forwards, marching and falling down and getting up.

Preschool 2

Skaters will learn skills including: gliding, two foot jumps, making snow and walking backwards. This class is for children who can skate independently. Prerequisite: Preschool 1

Learn to care for children of various ages. Basic first aid and personal safety measures are emphasized throughout this workshop. The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion.

Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for Assistant Lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

AMOA is included.

EARN HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS British Columbia and Yukon high school students can use Lifesaving Society certifications for credit toward high school graduation as follows: • Bronze Cross is worth 2 credits for Grade 11. • Bronze Cross and Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) are worth 3 credits for Grade 11. • National Lifeguard Pool option (NL) is worth 2 credits for Grade 12.

Starfish/Duck

4-24 Months

This is an introductory class for babies and toddlers and a caregiver to experience buoyancy, movement, entries, and holds in the water. Build confidence while enjoying the water through games, songs and active participation. Parent participation required, children must be able to hold up their head.

Sea Turtle 24-36 Months

This is a transition level, caregivers can gradually transfer their child into full time care of the instructor. Swimmers work on submersion, jumping into chest deep water with assistance, and kicking. Floats & recovery to a standing position are introduced and practiced.

Sea Otter

3-5 Years

Swimmers will learn how to submerge, blow bubbles, and open their eyes under water. Using games and activities, they will further develop their assisted floats and glides on their front

and back and experience age appropriate water safety skills.

Salamander

3-5 Years

Swimmers will learn unassisted floats and glides. Rollover glides and front swim are introduced through games and songs. The fun includes jumping into chest deep water.

Sunfish

3-5

Years

Swimmers increase the distance of all glides and floats in deep water are practiced. Learning also focuses on good judgement in, on, and around the water.

Crocodile/Whale

3-5 Years

Swimmers start independent glides and kicking in deep water. Endurance is built through increasing distances for front and back swims and maintaining a surface support for 10 seconds. In Whale, the focus is on progressions to front crawl. Front glides and front swims are performed for 10 metres. The basics of diving are introduced.

Swim Kids 1/2

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim. They learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a lifejacket/Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

Swim Kids 3/4

There is an introduction to diving and teaching swimmers to make wise choices about where and when to swim. In level 4, front crawl is introduced and back swim with shoulder roll. Endurance swims are 15m/25m.

Swim Kids 5/6

In these levels front swims are increased to 15m/25m, back crawl will focus on arm position and roll, safe boating and safety on ice is introduced. Front dive and treading water is practiced and endurance swims are built up to 50m/75m.

Swim Kids 7/8/9/10

These levels work on all of the swimming strokes and increasing a swimmers endurance up to 500m swim. Whip kick, is introduced in level 7. In level 8, swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of choking rescues on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Treading water and fitness skills are practiced. In level 10, there is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance.

New Swim Lesson Program coming to SEAPARC in January

SWIM FOR LIFE LESSONS

At the end of 2022, the Canadian Red Cross will no longer be offering their swim lesson program. As such, SEAPARC will transition to the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program in 2023.

Here’s a sneak peak of what will be offered:

PARENT & TOT PROGRAMS

Levels 1-3 4 months to 3 Years

Parent/caregiver and their children program will emphasize the importance of play through developing water-positive attitudes and skills during in-water interactions. Previously Red Cross Starfish/Duck and Sea Turtle.

PRESCHOOL

Levels 1-5 3-5 Years

This program ensures children become comfortable in the water while having fun developing a foundation of water skills. Previously Red Cross Sea Otter, Salamander, Sunfish, Crocodile and Whale.

SWIMMER

Levels 1-6 6-12 Years

This program ensures children become comfortable in the water while having fun developing a foundation of water skills. Previously Red Cross Swim Kids 1-7.

After completing the Swimmer program, the next steps include Canadian Swim Patrol-Rookie, Ranger & Star (previously Swim Kids 8-10). The Canadian Swim Patrol provides enriched training for young swimmers who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim with an introduction to water proficiency. This program is an on-ramp to Lifesaving and Lifeguarding.
