Welcome to Luther College
House Performing Arts Festival Stephanie
Performance Order Wednesday Thursday
The House Performing Arts Festival has become quite a tradition at Luther College, and is now in its 30 year! The festival consists of the presentation of six short performance programs, presented on two consecutive nights, with different adjudicators attending each night. One play is presented by each of the Houses: Birt, Cheong, Nelson, Warran, Wicklow and Yarra.
It is important to note that these programs are the result of student initiative. No teacher or other adult has given undue assistance, aside from general encouragement, advice and guidance. Houses are given a common theme (this year based around our College theme of unity), and must include acting, choir, music ensemble and dance in their program. Students in each house have been responsible for developing, rehearsing and designing for their House.
The programs are judged according to established Dance, Drama and Music criteria (i.e. rhythm, pitch, precision, use of expressive skills, choreographic choices etc), plus the added criterion of energy and enthusiasm!
The students show tremendous spirit in this part of the college program and it is a time when the bonding, team spirit, attitudes of encouragement, and respect for the efforts of others grow markedly – both within and between the various Houses.

While PAF does generate points for the overall House competition, this aspect remains secondary to the aims above.
Dr Paris Balla (they/them) is a playwright, puppeteer, theatre maker and educator who loves working with young artists. Paris’ favourite theatre moments include: Owl and the Albatross, a play they started writing at 19, which was on the VCE Drama playlist in 2022 at Theatre Works in St Kilda (that they also made puppets for and co-directed); Little Blue Dot, a piece developed with Lemony S Puppet Theatre and the Monash University School of Physics and Astronomy, set to tour in the next few years; and Rest in Paradise, a comedy murder mystery created with a group of teenagers at La Mama Theatre as part of Paris’ PhD. Offstage, Paris is a facilitator at 100 Story Building, Troupe Leader at Full Spectrum Theatre and co-Artistic Director of FRESH Youth Theatre. They are passionate about telling unexpected stories from unlikely voices.

With a passion for sharing theatre with the community, she is a current committee member and President Elect of OSMaD Theatre in Hawthorn.
