Dear Customers and Friends, Thanks to you, this year marked the 60th Anniversary of John R. Wood Properties. As we celebrate this milestone we also realized that March was one of the best sales months in company history. The last year overall has been remarkable for properties priced above $1 million, especially in the condominium market where the data shows a 60 percent increase in closed sales over the last 12 months. The Legacy of John R. Wood and Naples

What do Visa, LG Electronics, and Pizza Hut all share with John R. Wood Properties? They were all established in 1958—and are still thriving, profitable brands today. Longevity is truly a hallmark of an organization with not only immense consumer appeal, but also a testament to the enduring core values that shape their business practices and brand image. Six decades ago, the founder of the Wood firm, a young attorney from Arkansas, followed his intuition and saw an incredible opportunity in Florida real estate.

60 Years of Legendary Service The story of the brokerage parallels that of Naples, the city where John Wood first established his vision. Since 1958, this region has evolved from modest (that’s the understatement of the year) to magnificent. The company began as a two-desk operation in a small rented space on Fifth Avenue South. Today, the team of over 500 agents, from Marco Island to Sanibel and Captiva, sells more homes than any other brokerage in Southwest Florida. If you’re in business for six decades, through good times and bad, you must be doing something right. The company owes its success to the legacies and values that were embodied from the beginning. When the company was founded by John and Wanda Wood in 1958, the town was only a few thousand people---a fishing village where wealthy Midwesterners liked to visit in the wintertime. Port Royal lots could be purchased for $7,500, and shortly thereafter, the controversial Port Royal club was approved with promises from the developer that it would never have night time dinner and dancing. Two years later, on September 10th, 1960, the town suffered a direct hit from ferocious Hurricane Donna. The impact was devasting, far more than the recent Irma storm, but millions of dollars in insurance payments helped catalyze a subsequent building boom and poised the region for a growth surge. New communities such as Coquina Sands and the Moorings had recently started at the far north end of town (just north of the Naples Beach Club), but there were still so few homes, that the Wood Company had to sell a lot of acreage in the early years.

60 Years of Integrity Due to some unscrupulous land developers in the area, not all acreage sales were handled in an ethical manner. This was a particular problem in the sub-tropical climate. Buyers could look at beautiful dry land in the winter, not realizing that it might be totally flooded during the rainy season. And there was so much buzz about the boom in Florida that many people were buying land sight unseen. To dispel the myth that all Florida brokers were selling swamp land, he authored a slogan, “Walk on it before you buy”. Then he bought a four-wheel drive Jeep and put the slogan and footprints on the side of his vehicle to remind the public that if you bought from John R. Wood, you were likely one of the most well-informed land purchasers in the country. Over the years, the firm had a series of four-wheel drive vehicles used for showing acreage, and the slogan was prominent on the side. In fact, that slogan helped Wood establish a reputation for honesty that propelled the firm to the top of the market.

60 Years of Philanthropy The region is blessed with many attributes. A gorgeous, subtropical landscape. Sugary beaches. Abundant wildlife. And for the fourth year in a row, Naples was ranked the happiest city in America. Much of that happiness comes from the long-standing generosity of people like the Wood family who sought out opportunities to give back to the community. These people have given our region the incredible quality of life that it enjoys today. Philanthropy walks hand in hand with the core values of legendary service and unsurpassed ethics. Mr. Wood himself took active roles in the YMCA, United Way, Conservancy, Junior Deputies, and St. Matthews House. He served on dozens of boards and campaigns and, now in his late 80’s, continues to volunteer today. His extensive involvement in charitable organizations has been recognized with honors such as the Naples Daily News Citizen of the Year, the Hodges University Humanitarian of the Year, and as a Laureate for the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame. Today, the tradition continues with staff members and agents’ involvement in numerous philanthropic and charitable events. The legacy has enhanced lives and fostered positive change within our communities, serving all who have made Southwest Florida their home in paradise.

Looking back and forging ahead Naples was a sleepy fishing village when the Wood family arrived. Mosquito trucks, a water tower, two-lane and dirt roads. It was a different era, but paradise was always here. Even then, the company invited clients to bring their highest expectations for every transaction. John Wood summed up those 60 years, “We are indebted to our many customers who relate to our legendary service, ethical principles, and giving back to the communities where we live and work. Carol Wood and Claire McMahon Team were sponsors for the Golden Age of Hollywood, on February 10th. This event was held by The Friends of Hope Women’s Committee and raised over $182,000. to benefit Joanne’s House for Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs.

Tade and Emily are supporters of the Celebrity Martini Glass Auction and their designated charity recipient PAWS, which provides service dogs to deserving veterans. This unique event features a roster of martini glasses that are autographed by celebrities or American heroes and then designed by noted artists in keeping with the personality and accomplishments of the signer. These works of art are then sold at an exciting live auction. This year the event raised a record breaking 1.2 million dollars.

Approximately 150 guests enjoyed a champagne reception at the Hollywood themed event at Bonita Bay Club. Silent and live auction packages included trips to Costa Rica, Tuscany, the Greek Isles, and other exciting destinations. The mission of the Friends of Hope Women’s Committee is to sponsor and support fund-raising events and through membership and fellowship, increase volunteer participation and community awareness for Hope Hospice.
