aldives President Mohamed Muizzu has asked India to withdraw its military personnel from the Indian Ocean archipelago nation by mid-March, officials said. President Muizzu has formally asked India to withdraw its military personnel, estimated to amount to 88, by March 15, President’s Office’s Secretary, Public Policy, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim told the press in a briefing, the Sun (Maldives) reported. A high-level core group, set by both nations, to negotiate the withdrawal of troops held its first meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Male on Sunday morning with Indian High Commissioner Munu Mahawar present, he said, adding that the agenda for the meeting was the request to withdraw troops by mid-March. “Indian military personnel cannot stay in the Maldives. This is the policy of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and that of this administration,” he said. President Muizzu had, during his presidential campaign, asserted that he would accomplish the removal of Indian troops from the Maldives, and had made a formal request to India to withdraw its military personnel soon after assuming office.

rime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that India has been aiming to reduce its offshore dependence on aircraft leasing and financing in the coming years. He said this while addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Boeing India Engineering and Technology Centre (BIETC) in Bhattara Marenahalli near Devanahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru. PM Modi said that to enable more rapid growth in aviation, India has been taking many steps at the policy level constantly. “We are encouraging states to bring down taxes on aviation fuels, making the process of aircraft leasing easier. Our aim is to reduce India’s offshore dependence in aircraft leasing and financing,” he stated. For this purpose, the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) has been started in GIFT City, Gujarat. “The aviation sector in the country will benefit from this. I have stated from the Red Fort, ‘Yahi samay hai, Sahi samay hai’ (this is the right time). For Boeing and other international companies, this is the right time. This is the time to ensure their growth with India’s progress,” PM Modi emphasized.

Withdraw troops by mid-March, Maldives tells India Contd. from Pg. 01 Amid the row over three junior ministers’ allegedly derogatory remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his Lakshadweep visit, the Maldives President, talking to press on Saturday after his return from a five-day state visit to China, without naming India, made a further jab at it. “We may be small, but that doesn’t give you the license to bully us.” He also announced plans to reduce the country’s dependency on India, including securing imports of essential food commodities and medicine and consumables from other countries. “We aren’t in anyone’s backyard. We are an independent and sovereign state,” he told reporters at the Velana International Airport. He said that no country has the right to exert influence over the domestic affairs of a country, regardless of its size and vowed that he will not allow any external influence on the domestic affairs of the Maldives.

NATO to conduct largest military drills in decades

N

ATO is launching its largest exercise since the Cold War, rehearsing how U.S. troops could reinforce European allies in countries bordering Russia and on the alliance’s eastern flank if a conflict were to flare up with a “near-peer” adversary. Some 90,000 troops are due to join the Steadfast Defender 2024 drills that will run through May, the alliance’s top commander Chris Cavoli said on Thursday. More than 50 ships from aircraft carriers to destroyers will take part, as well as more than 80 fighter jets, helicopters and drones and at least 1,100 combat vehicles including 133 tanks and 533 infantry fighting vehicles, NATO said. Cavoli said the drills would rehearse NATO’s execution of its regional plans, the first defence plans the alliance has drawn up in decades, detailing how it would respond to a Russian attack. NATO did not mention Russia by name in its announcement. But its top strategic document identifies Russia as the most significant and direct threat to NATO members’ security. The last exercises of a similar size were Reforger - during the Cold War in 1988 with 125,000 participants - and Trident Juncture in 2018 with 50,000 participants, according to NATO. The troops taking part in the exercises, which will involve simulations of getting personnel to Europe as well as exercises on the ground, will come from NATO countries and Sweden, which hopes to join the alliance soon.

This campus will also help the world to trust India’s talent. This day celebrates the fact that one day India will design aircraft for the future in this facility,” he said. The Prime Minister further said: “This is a big day for the people of Karnataka. Last year, in Karnataka, Asia’s largest helicopter manufacturing factory’s work was completed. Now, they are getting a global technology campus. This shows how Karnataka is shaping as a big aviation hub.” “I especially congratulate Indian youth because from this facility they will get many opportunities for honing their skills in the aviation sector,” he said.

The US Central Command confirmed the Houthi attack in a statement on Wednesday, adding that the ship was slightly damaged but remained seaworthy and has continued its voyage. aising concerns over an “alarming” escalation of extortion threats against Indian and South Asian business communities, mayors in the Canadian towns of Brampton and Surrey have urged the government to take swift action to root out the menace. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and his counterpart from Surrey Brenda Locke expressed “deep concern” over a growing number of “extortion attempts and violent acts, including shootings” this week in a letter addressed to Canada’s Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc. The mayors said that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and local police departments, including Peel Regional Police, “have acknowledged the gravity of the situation”. According to CP24 news channel, Peel police recently launched the Extortion Investigative Task Force, which is now probing the circumstances surrounding 16 incidents of extortion.

A police “Law Enforcement Only” bulletin, which was leaked late in December 2023, said the Hindi-speaking suspects use WhatsApp messaging service to contact victims and threaten violence after “demanding large quantities of currency”, the Global News reported.

The suspects often know the name of the victim as well as their phone number, address, and business information, and contact them through social media, and demands for money allegedly are made under threats of violence, police said. The mayors urged the government to prioritize the issue and engage with local and provincial authorities, along with necessary federal agencies, to develop a “comprehensive strategy to address these extortion threats”. The mayors noted that the incidents have “instilled fear”

in their respective communities, with Brown telling CP24 that he wants the Justin Trudeau government to send a clear message that these incidents will not be tolerated. On January 3, police in Edmonton, Alberta, announced that they’re investigating 18 extortion incidents in the region that they believe are linked to a series of arson and drive-by shootings. They also reported six arrests connected to extortion, shootings, and arson, which

he lawyers of former US President Donald Trump have warned of “chaos and bedlam” if states are allowed to bar him from the ballot for this year’s presidential election.

Hans Henri P. Kluge, the WHO’s regional director for Europe, noted a surge in influenza infections and hospitalizations at a press conference on Tuesday in Copenhagen, and urged health systems to prepare for a likely increase in cases in the coming weeks, Xinhua news agency reported.

Last month, the Colorado Supreme Court had said that Trump is constitutionally ineligible to run in 2024 because the 14th Amendment’s ban on insurrectionists holding office covers his conduct on January 6, 2021, the day of the Capitol riots, reports CNN. “The Court should reverse the Colorado decision because President Trump is not even subject to section 3, as the President is not an ‘officer of the United States’ under the Constitution. And even if President Trump were subject to section 3 he did not ‘engage in’ anything that qualifies as ‘insurrection’,” Trump’s attorneys said in a brief submitted to the US Supreme Court on Thursday. The efforts “promise to unleash chaos and bedlam if other state courts and state officials follow Colorado’s lead and exclude the likely Republican presidential nominee from their ballots”, the lawyers further argued. Earlier this month, the US Supreme Court agreed to hear the case, accepting

The justices are separately involved in other matters that could impact the federal criminal case against the former President, CNN reported. The Colorado ruling has been on pause pending the US Supreme Court’s resolution of the case, and the state’s top election official has certified the 2024 presidential primary ballots with Trump’s name on the Republican ballot. If the justices conclude Trump is ineligible for public office before Colorado’s primary, then any votes cast for him would not be counted. Oral arguments in the Colorado case are scheduled for February 8.

Various pathogens, including Covid-19, influenza virus and seasonal coronavirus are “now common” among the population, the RIVM said in its most recent update as of January 10. The number of individuals reporting flu-like symptoms is on the rise, it said. In the past week, 44 out of 100,000 people sought medical attention for such complaints, marking a notable increase from the previous week’s 27 per 100,000. In Italy, hospitals were under intense pressure due to the worst flu wave the country had witnessed in at least 15 years, Italian health professionals warned

last Friday. Admissions to emergency rooms increased by 20 percent to 30 percent last week, mainly due to serious flu cases, according to the Italian Federation of Health Authorities and Hospitals (FIASO). In another development, the Spanish government reimposed the mandatory use of facemasks in hospitals and health centers as of January 10, following a sharp rise in COVID-19 and flu infections since the start of the new year. Spain reported a sharp rise in respiratory illnesses, with the infection rate soaring to over 952 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The peak of infections was set to arrive, Health Minister Monica Garcia warned last week.

he US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that two Navy SEALs were missing in a recent operation conducted by the American military near the coast of Somalia to seize what it said were Iranian weapon components being supplied to the Houthi militia in Yemen. In a statement on Tuesday, the CENTCOM said that US forces on January 11 conducted a night-time seizure of a dhow conducting illegal transport of advanced lethal aid from Iran to resupply Houthi forces in Yemen as part of the militia’s ongoing attacks against international merchant shipping in the Red Sea. The Navy SEALS were operating from the USS Lewis B Puller naval vessel and supported by helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The “complex boarding” of the dhow was conducted near the coast of Somalia in international waters of the Arabian Sea. The forces seized Iranian-made ballistic missile and cruise missiles components. The two missing SEALS, who were reported as lost at sea, were directly involved in the operation, the Command said.

“And while it is impossible to know what the Supreme Court will decide, hopefully it will at least clarify what role, if any, state decision-makers, including secretaries of state and state judicial officers, play in adjudicating claims of disqualification brought under Section Three of the 14th Amendment.” Trump’s lawyers appealed in state court after Bellows’ ruling but then asked the judge to pause proceedings to allow the Supreme Court to rule on a similar case in Colorado.

US Congress passes stopgap bill to extend government funding until March

awyers for Rudy Giuliani asked a U.S. bankruptcy judge on Friday for permission to challenge a $148 million defamation verdict won by two former Georgia election workers that he falsely accused of fraud after former Republican President Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss. Gary Fischoff, an attorney for the former Trump lawyer, told U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane at a court hearing in White Plains, New York, that Giuliani can’t pay the $148 million verdict, much less have anything left over to pay others who have sued him. Giuliani’s bankruptcy filing came on Dec. 21, just days after the former New York City mayor was ordered to pay $148 million to Wandrea “Shaye” Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman, who faced a deluge of threats after Giuliani falsely claimed they were engaged in voting fraud. That filing automatically stops litigation from moving forward against him, including efforts to collect the judgment and other election-related defamation lawsuits.

he US House of Representatives has passed a short-term spending bill that would extend government funding until March, a few hours after the bill was approved by the Senate, as funding for some federal agencies and programs is set to expire on Saturday. The lower chamber of Congress passed the measure by a vote of 314-108 late Thursday amid opposition from hard-line House Republicans, who had attempted to cut federal spending and add border security provisions in the “clean” stopgap measure, reports Xinhua news agency.

The bill, which cleared the Senate earlier in the day by a tally of 77 to 18, will now be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. This is the third stopgap funding measure this Congress has approved, with the first in September 2023 and the second in November. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, was unprecedentedly ousted from his post by conservative members of his own party after passing a “clean” short-term spending bill with the support of Democrats. In November, McCarthy’s successor, House Speaker Mike Johnson worked with Democrats to approve another stopgap spending bill that would extend funding for some federal agencies and

programs until January 19, 2024, and others through February 2. Earlier this month, House and Senate leaders reached an agreement on a short-term spending deal that would move upcoming government funding deadlines to March 1 and 8, respectively, buying legislators more time to craft longer-term spending bills. Just as McCarthy, Johnson is facing criticism from within the party, as hardright House Republicans have been pressuring him to drop the spending deal he reached with the Democratic leadership. Some Republican lawmakers even expressed regret for casting a vote for Johnson’s speakership.

he US Department of Justice (DOJ) in a damning language for law enforcement agencies in Uvalde in Texas held them responsible for their failure to respond and prevent the shooting by a lone gunman in 2022, in the worst ever slaughter of school children in American history.

The number of homeless people dying from environmental exposure -- including hypothermia and hyperthermia -- has gone up in recent years, from zero in 2012 to nine in 2021, according to Public Health in Seattle and King Count.

By the time the shooter was killed by US Border Patrol agents and not by the hundreds of state and local law officers who swarmed to the school, 19 children and two of their teachers were dead and 17 others were wounded, according to reports.

Weather shelters across King County quickly filled up last Friday, leading the King County Regional Homelessness Authority to work with the city of Seattle and The Salvation Army to add 100 more shelter beds at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall, totaling 300 spaces for Saturday night in the city’s largest severe weather shelter, said a report by The Seattle Times.

The 500 page report by the DOJ describes the response by law enforcement as a “failure” with no one taking full command, and criticized certain actions that delayed efforts to save lives and to confront the heavily armed gunman, media reports said. The DOJ released the report on Thursday just blocks from the May 24, 2022, carnage at

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has urged providers to administer more vaccines in light of the possibility of “more severe disease and increased healthcare capacity strain” from respiratory illness, especially in the wake of holiday gatherings.

n Indian-origin liquor store employee in the US state of Illinois was left shaken after four armed men in their 20s entered the shop, put a gun to his temple and punched his co-worker before fleeing away with cash and cell phones.

The incidents of robbery seem to be on a rise in Chicago with five liquor stores hit in a span of less than two hours in Irving Park last week. The Chicago Police Department could not confirm whether the same gang was involved in the robbery, which took place this Monday, and asked businesses to be on alert and keep their surveillance cameras in working order. They also urged staff at businesses to stay alert, and watch out for suspicious people loitering in the area.

Indian-origin ex-employee jailed for duping Football Association of Singapore IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk

A

n Indian-origin former deputy director at the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) was sentenced to 55 weeks’ jail on Tuesday for awarding the sporting body’s supply contracts to companies linked to him or his wife. Rikram Jit Singh Randhir Singh, 43, admitted to exploiting his position by inducing FAS to disburse SG$609,380, from which he and his wife, Asya Kirin Kames, made a profit of SG$127,896. Their profits have been seized by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) and will be returned to the FAS, The Straits Times newspaper reported. Singh had pleaded guilty on January 3 to 15 cheating charges, and another

30 charges were considered during sentencing. The court withdrew all the 46 charges, mainly for cheating, against Singh’s wife Asya and granted a discharge amounting to an acquittal, which means she cannot be charged again with the same offences. “The family is relieved that the matter is over, and they can now move on with their lives,” the couple’s lawyer, Satwant Singh, told The Straits Times. FAS is responsible for developing and advancing football in Singapore, and is partially funded by Sport Singapore, which falls under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Having joined FAS in December 2010 as a marketing manager, Singh rose through the ranks to become a deputy director in July 2017.

UK Post Office scandal: Indian-origin elderly continues to battles for compensation IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk

A

n Indian-origin postmaster continues to battle for compensation, three years after his conviction was quashed in what is being remembered as one of the most widespread miscarriage of justice in British legal history. Vipin Patel, 70, who ran the Horspath Post Office in Oxford for five years, was among hundreds of employees falsely accused of theft and fraud by the Post Office over a 15-year period because of an accounting software glitch. He was charged with stealing GBP 75,000 from the Post Office, convicted of fraud, and given an 18-week suspended prison sentence in 2011, the Oxford Mail newspaper said. Following a television drama on the scandal aired this month, the UK government said it would introduce new

legislation to make sure the victims of the Post Office scandal are swiftly exonerated and compensated. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in the Commons that a new upfront payment of 75,000 pounds ($95,000) will be offered to a group of former postmasters who took their case against the Post Office to the High Court in 2019. Patel’s son, Varchas, said that his parents are “really pleased” that the television show raised public awareness, “but they are still battling for compensation”. “There has been no payment at all from the government despite my father’s conviction being quashed and the court saying my dad had no stain on his character. I’m angry it has taken a drama to speed things up but pleased as well -- a mixed bag of emotions,” Varchas told the Oxford Mail. Patel, whose conviction was quashed by

Southwark Crown Court in 2020, has been left disabled and ‘bedridden’ after the years-long ordeal, according to his son. Varchas was 23 when Patel was prosecuted and remembers seeing a prison officer come upstairs to the flat and put an ankle tag on his father. The UK government paid more than 148 million pounds to 2,700 victims so far across different compensation systems, according to a Nikkei Asia report. Last year, the government said that each individual whose convictions were overturned would be entitled to 600,000 pounds in compensation.

A

n Indo-Canadian driver has been providing critical shuttle services to people seeking shelter in sub-zero temperatures in the country’s British Columbia province.

ingapore’s Indian-origin Transport Minister, S. Iswaran has stepped down from his post after facing 27 charges of offences in a corruption probe, which also included receiving tickets from a top property tycoon. The 61-year-old minister, who was arrested on July 11 last year and released on SG$800,000 bail, also resigned as an MP from the ruling People’s Action Party, The Straits Times reported on Thursday. In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, dated January 16, Iswaran said the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) charged him with various offences.

Upkar Singh Tatlay, executive director of the Engaged Communities Canada Society, is up before dawn to drive community members with no home of their own to a warming center in a white multi-passenger van.

“I reject the allegations in the charges and will now focus on clearing my name. Given the circumstances, I feel it is right for me to resign from Cabinet, as a Member of Parliament and as a member of the PAP,” he wrote. Iswaran, who was on a leave of absence since the probe began in July 2023, will repay his salary as a minister and allowances as an MP from that month. The Prime Minister’s Office said that effective from Thursday, Chee Hong Tat will replace Iswaran as Transport Minister.

While overnight shelter is available at the South Surrey Recreation Centre, users have to vacate it before 6.30 a.m. Tatlay then transports these people to the center, which is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at North Bluff Road and is funded by the city and public donations.

London mayoral election: Second British-Indian throws hat in the ring IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk

ondon may get its first Indianorigin mayor with finance and property broker Shyam Batra announcing his intent to run as an independent in the May 2024 election. Batra (62) is the second British-Indian to throw his hat in the ring after investment banker Tarun Ghulati in the fast-growing group of contenders for this year’s election, looking to unseat Mayor Sadiq Khan, who is seeking re-election as a Labour candidate. A resident of Uxbridge in west London, Batra told the BBC that he did not see himself as a “party political candidate”, but rather as someone who “just wants to fix London and give people a voice”. Like Ghulati, his main priority, if elected, is to abolish the Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) as well as the congestion zone and 20mph speed limits. Some of his other priorities include tackling the cost-of-living crisis and improving housing issues by introducing “a finance scheme to get everyone on the property ladder”.

“There are so many people that need assistance,” Tatlay, who makes multiple trips transporting people from the end of November through March, told CBC news channel. Knowing well that being exposed to bitter cold can be life-threatening, Tatlay picks unhoused people from an overnight shelter in Surrey to drop them at the Society’s Daytime Warming Centre in the neighboring city of White Rock.

“People are sleeping in really difficult situations so we are always trying to find out where they are,” he told CBC, adding that he also keeps an eye for those in need of shelter services. “We see seniors, we see people that have been discharged from the hospital, we see people who are renovicted... a lot of folks who actually have really good jobs but they

just don’t compare to the astronomical rents, cost of living (and) food,” Tatlay said. When Tatlay arrives with his first batch, they are welcomed by volunteers serving croissants and coffee. In addition, they have access to mental health and medical resources at the center and are also provided warm clothing and blankets.

n Indo-Canadian commercial truck driver admitted to a drug trafficking crime after authorities in the US found approximately 30 kilograms of cocaine in watermelon pallets. Kareshmaa Kaur Jagroop (42) from Ontario, was attempting to enter Canada at the Montana border when she was caught by the Customs and Border Protection officers, US Attorney Jesse Laslovich said on Tuesday. Jagroop pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine as charged in a superseding information and faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, a $1 million fine and at least three years of supervised release. The government alleged in court documents that in July 2021, a commercial truck was northbound on Interstate 15 near the Sweetgrass Port of Entry in Toole County. As it approached the border in the outbound lane, Customs and Border Protection officers signaled the truck to stop, but the driver ignored the signal and continued past the outbound booth. Officers chased down the truck, which

eventually stopped, and had Jagroop reverse the truck back to the outbound booth for inspection. As part of the inspection, Jagroop drove through a screening machine, which showed potential anomalies in the trailer. Officers conducted a manual search and unloaded the contents with a forklift. They removed two pallets of watermelons and saw a plastic bag that contained approximately 30 kg of cocaine. During an interview, Jagroop told officers she entered the US about a week prior to the stop and delivered produce to supermarkets in Oregon and California. She eventually admitted that she was hauling cocaine for a group in Canada. Jagroop’s sentencing has been set for May 23 and she was released on conditions to a treatment center in Montana pending further proceedings. The court will determine any sentence after considering the US Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

he Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the applications filed by convicts in Bilkis Bano case seeking an extension of four to six weeks to surrender before the concerned jail authorities. A bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan said that the applications filed by gang-rape and murder convicts seeking permission to stretch the January 21 deadline to surrender have no merit. The batch of applications filed by 10 of the 11 convicts cited reasons such as ill health, family responsibilities, care for aged and ailing parents and upcoming harvest season. On Thursday, the top court agreed to urgently list these applications for hearing and ordered the registry to obtain directions from the Chief Justice of India to constitute a special bench of Justice Nagarathna and Justice Bhuyan.

Parliament security breach: Delhi court denies bail to Neelam Azad IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk

Punjab CM questions SGPC chief’s silence over Harsimrat’s remark hurting Sikh sentiments IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk

P A

Delhi court on Thursday denied bail to Neelam Azad, one of the six accused in the December 13, 2023, Parliament security breach case. Additional Sessions Judge Hardeep Kaur of Patiala House Court pronounced the order after having it reserved on Tuesday. On Tuesday, the Delhi Police had opposed Azad’s bail plea, saying that the material and documentary evidence demonstrate her involvement in the offence, making her ineligible for release on bail. Police had argued that there are reasonable grounds against the accused, and considering the ongoing investigation, bail should be denied. Citing the accused’s alleged influence and power, it had expressed concern about the potential impact on the investigating agency if she were released on bail.

unjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday questioned the silence of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President, Harjinder Singh Dhami, over the statement of Lok Sabha MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, equating the election symbol of the Akali Dal with that of the scales of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev. “For us, this takkadi (election symbol of SAD) is no less important than the takkadi of Guru Nanak Sahib,” Harsimrat Kaur Badal had said while addressing a crowd on Maghi day. The Chief Minister in a statement said that it is surprising that though Harsimrat Badal had hurt the psyche of every Sikh by giving such irresponsible and baseless statements, the SGPC is mum over the issue. Bhagwant Mann said this reflects that Dhami is nothing more than a loyal volunteer of the Akali Dal in general and the Badal family in particular. Mann said the SGPC

chief had turned a blind eye towards all misdeeds of his masters, thereby hurting the sentiments of the entire Sikh community. The Chief Minister said Harsimrat Badal’s

British lawmakers pass PM’s Rwanda bill IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk

awmakers in Britain voted in favor of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda bill, designed to confirm that Rwanda is a safe third country for relocating individuals there. The bill, key to the government’s Rwanda plan, passed the House of Commons with 320 votes in favor and 276 votes against on Wednesday. It will now go to the House of Lords, Parliament’s upper chamber, for its first reading. “The passing of the bill tonight marks a major step in our plan to stop the boats,” said a spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s office. In April 2022, Britain reached a deal with Rwanda, under which illegal immigrants and asylum seekers would be sent to the East African country to have their claims processed there. If successful, they would be granted permanent residency in Rwanda rather than being allowed to return to Britain, Xinhua news agency reported. However, the scheme has met with resistance. The first flight scheduled to take seven migrants to Rwanda in June 2022 was canceled after intervention by the European Court of Human Rights. Two months ago, Britain’s Supreme Court ruled that the government’s scheme was “unlawful”. The British government later introduced emergency legislation known as the Safety of Rwanda Bill that would override domestic and international human rights laws.

North Korea tests underwater nuke weapons system in response to trilateral drills IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk

orth Korea on Friday said it has tested an underwater nuclear weapons system under development in response to the latest maritime trilateral drills involving South Korea, the US and Japan. According to Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the North Korean Defence Ministry said the country conducted an important test of the Haeil-5-23 in the East Sea, denouncing this week’s naval drills involving a US nuclear aircraft carrier as “reckless confrontation hysteria”. The KCNA did not disclose details, including the weapons’s specifications and the test date, reports Yonhap News Agency. “Our army’s underwater nuke-based countering posture is being further rounded off, and its various maritime and underwater

responsive actions will continue to deter the hostile military maneuvers of the navies of the US and its allies,” a spokesman of the Ministry said in a statement carried by the KCNA. The official condemned the three nations for “seriously threatening the security” of North Korea and sternly warned of “catastrophic consequences” for their acts, the report said.

South Korea, the US and Japan jointly conducted naval drills involving the USS Carl Vinson nuclear-powered aircraft carrier from Monday to Wednesday, following Pyongyang’s latest launch of a hypersonic missile. Pyongyang has long denounced joint military drills between Seoul and Washington as a rehearsal for an invasion.

ven as Canada considers capping the arrival of international students amid the growing housing crisis, 62,410 of them became permanent residents of the country in 2023, according to the country’s immigration data. This number represented an increase of 9,670 from the 52,740 international graduates who became international students in 2022, a November 2023 Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data said. Much of Canada’s population growth -- now one of the fastest in the world -- comes from foreign students, non-permanent residents, and temporary foreign workers, according to immigration experts. The nation opened its doors to immigrants to replace aging workers and fill labor gaps, but the boom in numbers has put a strain on the country’s resources. Last week, Immigration Minister Marc Miller said he will closely analyze the number of international students and temporary

The minister said he is mulling over options, which include reforming permits and capping intake of non-permanent residents. Meanwhile, Montreal-based Desjardins Securities warned that closing doors to temporary workers and foreign students allowed into Canada would blunt the country’s economic recovery and deepen recession.

The new feature will remind teens that it’s late and encourage them to shut the app. “Sleep is important, particularly for young people, so we’re launching new nighttime nudges that will show up when teens have spent more than 10 minutes on Instagram in places like Reels or Direct Messages late at night,” Meta said in a blogpost.

rtificial intelligence (AI) will affect nearly 40 per cent of all jobs around the world, according to a new analysis by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “In most scenarios, AI will likely worsen overall inequality, a troubling trend that policymakers must proactively address to prevent the technology from further stoking social tensions,” IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in a blogpost. According to the IMF, about 60 percent of jobs may be impacted by AI in advanced economies. Around half the exposed jobs may benefit from AI integration,

The court’s ‘Notice of Motion’ has scheduled a hearing regarding the fee on March 24, “plus additional amounts Apple is incurring during this ongoing litigation, under the indemnification provision of the Developer Program License Agreement”, the report mentioned. ndia is taking a tough stand on unfair non-tariff barriers being imposed on its exports by other countries and will take similar steps to counter these anti-trade measures on a reciprocal basis, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday. He asked India Inc to share a list of such anti-trade measures so that India can flag them with the respective nations. Non-tariff barriers to trade are restrictive practices which create impediments in smooth flow of imports and exports. Many of India’s exports suffer due to such unfair trade practices such as cumbersome prior registration requirements, excuses made on high pesticide levels, and unreasonable domestic rules in many countries.

After laying off nearly 1,000 employees last week, Google is also reportedly slashing “a few hundred” more jobs in its advertising sales team as part of an ongoing restructuring exercise.

The minister was of the view any unfair treatment to Indian goods will have to be met with reciprocal action as several of these countries seek access to the vast Indian market.

“We have ambitious goals and will be investing in our big priorities this year,” Pichai told employees in the memo. “The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices,” he added. In the memo, Pichai said that latest “role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team”. The layoffs this year are about “removing layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas”.

pple has demanded that Fortnite creator Epic Games pay them more than $73 million for legal fees amid their ongoing dispute over App Store payment methods. On January 16, the US Supreme Court refused to consider any side’s appeals, ending the three-year legal battle between Epic Games and Apple. But, after the case was over, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled that Epic Games owes Apple $73 million in legal fees and other costs, reports Apple Insider.

“These findings suggest emerging markets and developing economies face fewer immediate disruptions from AI. At the same time, many of these countries don’t have the infrastructure or skilled workforces to harness the benefits of AI, raising the risk that over time the technology could worsen inequality among nations,” said the IMF. AI could also affect income and wealth inequality within countries. The IMF believes that higher-income and younger workers might see disproportionate wage increases as a result of AI adoption. Lower-income and older workers might lag.

Just as in Saudi Arabia last week, the two teams produced another 120 monumental minutes of football, but this time goals in extra-time from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme tilted the balance to Atletico’s way in front of a packed Metropolitano Stadium on Thursday, reports Xinhua. The first half was sandwiched by two completely different actions from Atletico keeper Jan Oblak, who in the 20th minute made a brilliant double save to deny Rodrygo and then Vinicius Jr as his teammates asked

Real Madrid were looking more fluid and taking the game to their neighbors, who were leaving too much space between lines. The second period of extra time saw two tired teams giving everything. Dani Ceballos had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for a Bellingham offside. With Real Madrid searching for an equalizer, Atletico caught them on the break and Riquelme assured their place in the last-eight after finishing off a move started by Griezmann and with Memphis Depay giving the final pass.

Sue Redfern becomes first ICC-appointed female neutral umpire for bilateral series

ndia head coach Rahul Dravid was left in awe of captain Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 121 in the thrilling third T20I at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, saying the level of hitting he saw from the right-handed opener was incredible.

After loss to Swiatek, Collins announces 2024 will be her final season

The series against Afghanistan, which India won 3-0, saw Rohit’s return to T20Is alongside Virat Kohli. But Rohit had a less-than-anideal start, bagging two successive ducks. At the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday evening, Rohit struck his fifth T20I century in India’s double super over win. During his 121 not out off 69 balls, Rohit also became the first man to hit five T20I centuries as India made 212/4, with 103 of those runs coming in the last five overs. Rohit took time till the 12th over, before accelerating in an unbelievable fashion by smashing 93 runs in the last 35 balls he faced.

New York is scheduled to host eight matches of the tournament happening in the USA and West Indies, including three games with team India. The highly-anticipated India-Pakistan clash, penciled for June 9, will also be hosted at this venue. ICC said the project in Eisenhower Park, Nassau County, 30 miles east of Manhattan, has started this week, with site fencing erected and work to the outfield now underway. The stadium, which will be completed within three months, will have premium and general admission seating as well as VIP and hospitality suites, including a party deck and cabanas.

E

ngland’s Sue Redfern will become the first female neutral umpire appointed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to stand in a bilateral series after being named for the upcoming ICC Women’s Championship and T20I fixtures between Australia and South Africa. Sue’s appointment follows the ICC’s decision to appoint one neutral umpire for all ICC Women’s Championship series as well as any T20I matches scheduled between two

same opponents. The move will ensure some neutrality in running matches while also keeping in mind the long-term development of female umpires. “It’s an honor to be named by the ICC as its first official female neutral umpire and I’m very excited about the upcoming series between Australia and South Africa. This is a defining moment for both women’s cricket and female cricket officials, who have worked hard and been given development opportunities in recent years.”

‘HanuMan’ strikes a chord: Hindi dialogues win hearts across the nation

Noah Schnapp gets more flak for speaking his mind on Israel-Hamas conflict to just state from my heart how I feel,” the actor said in the Monday, January 15 video. “I only want peace and safety and security for all innocent people affected by this conflict.” He added that he’s “had many open discussions with friends from Palestinian background,” adding, “I think those are very important conversations to have and I’ve learned a lot.”

I

n the heart of the Hindi belt, an unlikely revolution is taking place, and its name is ‘HanuMan’. Prasanth Varma’s ambitious venture has not only marked the dawn of India’s first homegrown superhero film, but has also resonated profoundly with audiences in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and Bihar. As the film released this past Friday, heralding Varma’s cinematic universe, the film found takers from unusual sectors where the makers were not expecting to make a mark.

Schnapp, who is Jewish, went on to say: “We all hope for the same things, that being those innocent people still being held hostage in Gaza to be returned to their families, and equally hope for an end to the loss of innocent life in Palestine. “So many of those people being women and children, and it’s horrible to see. I think anyone with any ounce of humanity would hope for an end to the hostility on both sides.”

‘HanuMan’ introduces us to an ordinary man discovering extraordinary abilities, thrusting himself into a riveting battle of good versus evil. What sets this film apart is not only its unconventional narrative, but also the stellar Hindi dialogues that elevate the experience. These punchy and memorable lines, resonating with the audience, have become whistle-worthy moments, giving the film a unique edge. The film’s climax has the kind of feel that’s taking audiences back to the big-budget tentpole films. The carefully crafted Hindi dialogues, ensuring an authentic and immersive experience for audiences, have captured the enigma of Lord Hanuman, which is what is infused in the film’s Hindi version.

ollywood star Harrison Ford gave one of the most memorable speeches of the recently held Critics Choice Awards.

A visibly emotional Ford took the stage midway through the ceremony to accept the career achievement award, honoring his body of work, which includes some of the

Canada celebrates the arrival of Shree Ram In anticipation of the Ram Janmabhoomi festival on January 22, 2024, the Hindu Canadian Foundation has launched a striking campaign across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Giant billboards, strategically placed, serve as vibrant reminders of the imminent inauguration of the Shri Ram Mandir, contributing to a festive atmosphere that has enveloped the Hindu community in Canada.

A

runesh Giri, Founder and Executive Director of the Hindu Canadian Foundation, emphasized the significance of the billboards in spreading awareness and joy within the community. “Giant billboards across Canada are commemorating the Ram Janmabhoomi festival on January 22, 2024. The Hindu Canadian Foundation has put up large billboards across the GTA region to celebrate the inauguration of the Shri Ram Mandir. The Hindu community in Canada is fully embracing the festive spirit, with celebrations taking place in homes, temples, and public spaces. We are grateful to be part of this momentous occasion. Enjoy these impressive billboards!”

continues to grow rapidly, there is a realization that unity is key to progress. The Hindu Canadian Foundation, represented by organizations like the Hindu Community in Halton & Hamilton (HCHH), is at the forefront of efforts to unify the community. The HCHH, a grassroots Hindu group, is actively working to protect the collective interests of the Hindu community in the Halton & Hamilton Region. Their mission is to create an environment where the Hindu way of life is preserved, and the community remains close to its religious and cultural roots. Through initiatives focused on education and public engagement, the HCHH aims to empower Hindus to become meaningful contributors and active participants in local communities.

These billboards not only serve as visual spectacles but also as symbols of unity for the Hindu community in Canada. The festivities surrounding the Ram Mandir inauguration hold special significance for Hindus in the country, who have, over the last two centuries, migrated from various parts of the world, bringing with them diverse languages, cultures, and traditions.

As the celebrations for the Ram Mandir inauguration unfold, the Hindu Canadian community looks forward to not just existing as individuals but thriving as a united force. The billboards stand as a visual testament to this unity, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among Hindus across Canada.

In Canada, Hindus have flourished, making significant contributions to arts, education, business, science, finance, and technology. However, as the community

The Hindu Canadian Foundation, through its vibrant celebrations and grassroot efforts, envisions a future where the Hindu community is recognized as

progressive and a major contributor to the wider Canadian society, living Hinduism rather than just acknowledging it. The

festivities surrounding the Ram Mandir inauguration serve as a catalyst for this transformation, reinforcing the community’s commitment to mutual respect, pluralism, and sustainability.

LA health department investigates illnesses linked to raw oysters Entertainment

Fifty-one people aged 18 to 55 will participate in the trial of the ChAdOx1 NipahB vaccine, developed by researchers at the University of Oxford’s Pandemic Sciences Institute, the varsity said in a statement. Nipah virus is a devastating disease that can be fatal in around 75 percent of cases. Outbreaks have occurred in countries in South-East Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh and India, with a recent outbreak in Kerala, India in September 2023. Nipah virus is carried by fruit bats and may also be transmitted by contact with infected animals (such as pigs) or from person-to-person via close contact. Despite the first outbreaks of Nipah virus occurring 25 years ago in Malaysia and Singapore, there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments.

Biological E’s Corbevax gets WHO emergency use authorization

T

he Los Angeles public health department said that it was investigating a cluster of gastrointestinal illnesses potentially linked to raw oysters. There are 27 associated cases so far, and the department is currently working with the California Department of Public Health to investigate and confirm the source of this cluster of gastrointestinal illness cases, reports Xinhua news agency. The health department warns residents -- specifically those most vulnerable such

as young children, older adults, and people who are immunocompromised -- of the risks of consuming raw oysters. “Until the source is confirmed, consumers should be cautious before eating raw oysters due to the potential risk of foodborne illness,” said Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis in a statement. Last week, the US Food and Drug Administration warned about an outbreak of norovirus in San Diego County linked to

oysters that were imported from a specific December 2023 harvest in Sonora, Mexico. As many as 41 people have been identified as possible connections to that specific outbreak. Symptoms of norovirus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever and body aches which usually develop within 48 hours after consuming contaminated food. The illness typically lasts between 1-3 days and taking medical help is advised.

WHO warns of persistent threats from Covid

P

ublic health risks resulting from the Covid-19 virus remain high globally, with the virus circulating in all countries, a senior expert from the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

B

iological E. Limited (BE), a Hyderabad-based vaccines and pharmaceutical company, on Tuesday announced that the World Health Organization (WHO) has granted an Emergency Use Listing (EUL) to their Corbevax, which is India’s first indigenously developed Covid-19 vaccine that is based on protein sub-unit platform. Mahima Datla, Managing Director, Biological E. Limited, said that WHO EUL would help them to use the platform to continue developing Covid-19 vaccines as and when it starts impacting public health. “We are confident that this endorsement from WHO will bolster our global fight against Covid-19,” she added. “We understand that several countries come under a lot of fiscal pressure when it comes to dealing with Covid-19. We aim to reach the people in those countries with Corbevax, just as we have done with all our other vaccines. Our commitment is to provide affordable and accessible vaccines that are of high quality and the WHO EUL lays a path for us to make that possible,” she said.

According to estimates based on wastewater analysis, the actual circulation of Covid-19 is two to 19 times higher than the number of reported cases, Maria van Kerkhove, the interim director of WHO responsible for epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention, told a special briefing in Geneva. She also expressed concerns regarding the emergence of post-Covid conditions (also called “long Covid”) affecting multiple organs. While there has been a drastic reduction in Covid-related deaths since the peak, around 10,000 deaths per month are still reported from 50 countries. Van Kerkhove expressed concerns about the evolving nature of the virus, with the Covid-19 JN.1 variant representing around 57 percent of global sequences analyzed by the WHO. Defined by specific criteria, including symptoms like severe fatigue, lung impairments, neurologic issues, and cardiac impairments persisting for four to 12 months or longer after the acute phase of the disease, the post-Covid condition is a matter of concern, she said. Estimates suggest that one in ten infections could lead to post-Covid conditions,

including severe cases. “No treatments are available yet because it’s still so new,” van Kerkhove said.

emphasized the need for simultaneous flu and Covid-19 vaccination to mitigate the burden on healthcare systems.

“There is insufficient attention and funding dedicated to this area,” she added.

She also called for more booster vaccination, which is at a low level globally, with only 55 percent of older adults (over 75 or 80) having received a dose. By the end of December 2023, more than 7 million people had been reported to the WHO as having died from Covid-19.

She also warned of the rapid increase in the number of influenza infections in the northern hemisphere, with influenza positivity standing at around 20-21 per cent in week 51 of 2023. The expert also

Preventing cervical cancer By: Dr Archana Pathak

Cervical cancer is a significant health concern for women worldwide, but certain lifestyle changes can play a crucial role in preventing its occurrence. The following significant lifestyle adjustments can aid in the prevention of cervical cancer:

Regular Screening and Vaccination: Regular Pap smears and HPV vaccinations are fundamental in preventing cervical cancer. Early detection of any abnormal changes in the cervix by screening enables prompt action. The most prevalent strains of the virus that are known to cause cervical cancer are protected against by the HPV vaccination. Practicing Safe Sex: The risk of acquiring HPV and other STDs linked to cervical cancer can be decreased by limiting the number of sexual partners and regularly utilizing barrier techniques, such as condoms. Healthy Diet: A nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides essential vitamins and antioxidants that support a robust immune system. A strong immune system is better equipped to combat infections, including HPV. Tobacco Cessation: There is evidence that smoking raises the risk of cervical cancer. Giving up smoking lowers the risk of this cancer as well as improving general health and preventing the development of other cancers. Maintaining a Healthy Weight: There is a link between obesity and an increased risk of cervical cancer. A healthy weight can be at-

tained and maintained with the help of a balanced diet and regular exercise, which lowers the risk of acquiring cervical cancer. Stress Management: Prolonged stress impairs immunity, increasing the body’s susceptibility to illnesses. Engaging in stress-reduction practices like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises can improve immune system performance and general health. Limiting Alcohol Consumption: An elevated

risk of cervical cancer has been associated with excessive alcohol drinking. A healthier lifestyle can be achieved by reducing or giving up alcohol entirely. Including these lifestyle modifications in everyday activities can dramatically reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Women’s reproductive health and general wellbeing are greatly dependent on regular check-ups with medical specialists and adherence to preventive measures.
