Voorwoord Met gepaste trots presenteert Mennens Rotterdam B.V. u dit magazine naar aanleiding van de bouw en opening van ons nieuwe bedrijfspand aan de Heliniumweg 6 te Vlaardingen.

Onze gestage groei gaf hiertoe meer dan genoeg aanleiding. De verhuizing vanuit Schiedam naar ons nieuwe bedrijfspand markeert de vooraanstaande marktpositie van Mennens Rotterdam als veelzijdige kennisorganisatie op het gebied van staalkabel-, hijsen heftechniek en valbeveiliging.

Opnieuw een mijlpaal in onze lange geschiedenis vanaf de oprichting in 1888.

Een nieuwe naam, een duidelijke marktherkenning De nieuwbouw vormde tevens aanleiding om onze naam te veranderen in Mennens Rotterdam.

Our steady growth was more than enough reason for this move.

The move from Schiedam to our new premises marks the leading ­market position which Mennens Rotterdam enjoys as allround knowledge organisation in the field of steel wire rope, hoisting and lifting technology and fall protection. It is another m ­ ile­stone in the long history of our ­company since its e­ stablishment in 1888.

Reliability and safety: the most important factors for Mennens Rotterdam A new name, and clear market recognition The new building was also the ­reason to change our name to ­Mennens Rotterdam. An appropriate and clear indicator of our catchment area. The fact is that we operate mainly in South Holland and Zeeland, concentrating on Larger R ­ otterdam within that area, with valued clients from the ports. Changing our name to Mennens Rotterdam brings us back to our roots. It is also a reference to our Rotterdam working ethics, which is to the advantage of all our clients, from the far reaches of South Holland to Zeeland.

Mennens Rotterdam B.V. in vogelvlucht Mennens wordt in 1888 opgericht door H.J. Mennens aan de ­Rotterdamse Leuvehaven.

De focus? Voornamelijk handel in diverse scheepsbenodigdheden voor vooral binnenschippers.

Vanaf 1916 worden de zakelijke banden met de NV Scheepvaart en Steenkolen Mij. nauwer aangehaald. De leveringen ­bestaan voornamelijk uit dek- en machine­kamerbenodigdheden, tuigage-onderdelen en tuigage. In 1918 verhuist het bedrijf naar de Terwenakker. Vanaf de ­crisis­jaren (1929) groeit de verkoop van scheepsbenodigdheden gestaag.

Een groot project uit 1938 was het verzorgen van de tuigage van de Nieuw Amsterdam.

Zware oorlogsjaren Op 14 mei 1940 wordt het bedrijf bijna met de grond gelijkgemaakt door het bombardement op ­Rotterdam. Het bedrijf wordt met de nodige improvisatie voortgezet in een woonhuis aan de Keileweg.

Kort voor de bevrijding wordt ook nog het complete magazijn door de bezetter leeggehaald. Echter, kort na de bevrijding wordt een schip met de gestolen inhoud ­nabij Groningen aangetroffen zodat het bedrijf gelukkig over beginvoorraad beschikt.

Aan de slag met de wederopbouw In 1949 wordt een nieuw pand aan de Wijnhaven betrokken. De weder­ opbouw en de opbloei van de scheepsbouw zorgen vanaf 1949 voor een grote stijging in de vraag naar scheepsbenodigdheden. De gestage uitbreiding van de a­ ctiviteiten in de reparatie en het testen van tuigagematerialen wordt in 1959 gevolgd door uitbreiding van het pand aan de Wijnhaven. Vanaf die tijd bouwt Mennens een uitstekende naam op en specialiseert het zich in de kernactiviteiten op het gebied van hijsen, heffen, trekken en sjorren.

In de tachtiger jaren maakt Mennens deel uit van de Hoogerwerff-Groep en het Verto-concern. In deze jaren wordt de marktpositie van Mennens extra verstevigd met een uitstekende naam op het gebied van veilig hijsen

In het jaar 2003 besluiten de ­directeuren van de Mennens Groep het bedrijf van Nationaal Grond­bezit te kopen. De managers buy-out wordt een feit en de groep komt tot grote bloei. Het bedrijf heeft zich in de afgelopen jaren vooral uitgebreid als totaalleverancier en marktleider op het gebied van hijsen heftechniek. De groep bestaat verder uit M ­ ennens bedrijven gevestigd in Amsterdam, Dongen, Groningen, Hengelo, Zwijndrecht (B) en een specialist op het gebied van valbeveiliging genaamd Safe Site in ­Alblasserdam. Elke vestiging bedient haar eigen markten.

Nieuwbouw én terugkeer naar de naam Mennens Rotterdam B.V. Het pand in Schiedam wordt in 2004 nog eens grondig verbouwd.

Vanaf 2014 wordt er uitgekeken naar een nieuwe locatie. Uiteindelijk wordt die gevonden in Vlaardingen.

De bedrijfsnaam wordt na 40 jaar Mennens Rotterdam B.V.!

Mennens Rotterdam B.V. in a nutshell

In 1888 H.J. Mennens founded the Mennens company in the ­Leuvehaven port in Rotterdam.

Its focus? It traded mainly in various ship’s stores and supplies, e­ specially for inland skippers.

In 1916, business ties were tightened with NV Scheepvaart en Steenkolen Mij. Supplies consisted mainly of deck and engine room ­requirements, rigging components and rigging. The company moved to the Terwenakker in 1918.

Following the crisis years (1929), sales of ship’s stores and supplies grew steadily. A major project in 1938 was ­supplying the rigging for the SS Nieuw Amsterdam.

Difficult war years The bombardment of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940 almost destroyed the company to the ground. However, it continued to operate with the necessary improvisation from a house on the Keileweg road. Shortly

before liberation, the ­occupying forces emptied the entire warehouse.

In a stroke of luck, just after liberation, a ship with the stolen wares was discovered close to Groningen so that the company had some opening stock after all.

Hard at work on reconstruction!

In 1949, the company moved into a new building on the Wijnhaven. The period of reconstruction in the Netherlands and flourishing shipbuilding industry from 1949 ensured significant growth in the ­demand for ship’s stores and ­supplies. The steady expansion of the activities in repairs and testing

of rigging materials was followed in 1959 by expansions to the ­building on the Wijnhaven. From that time onwards, M ­ ennens built up an excellent name and ­specialised further in the core activities of hoisting, lifting, towing and lashing.

Verto group. Mennens’ market ­position was reinforced even more in those years thanks to its e­ xcellent reputation in safe hoisting and lifting. In 1994, the Verto group fell into receivership and the M ­ ennens Group was sold to ‘­Nationaal Grondbezit’.

Dan staat Mennens gegarandeerd 24/7 voor u klaar.

Wij bieden u 28 parate ­servicemonteurs, waarvan vijf ­specialist zijn op staalkabelgebied. Wij zijn 24/7 ­beschikbaar voor het leveren én inscheren van staalkabels in ­havenkranen in de Rotterdamse haven. Maar ook bij incidenten of andere technische mankementen zijn wij binnen 2 uur bij u op locatie, zowel in Zuid-Holland als in Zeeland. In de laatste regio h ­ ebben we zelfs drie servicemonteurs vast gestationeerd. Uiteraard voeren al onze servicemonteurs hun werkzaamheden zoals vastgesteld door de EKH uit.

Strong in service thanks to constant readiness Our efficiently organised Service and Breakdown Service means you need not worry about your hoisting and lifting equipment and it minimises the risk of ­breakdowns. In the unlikely event that your production process stops due to a technical fault? Mennens is ready for you, guaranteed 24/7.

We have 28 service engineers on standby, five of whom are wire rope specialists. We can supply and reeve wire rope in port cranes in the ­Rotterdam port 24/7. But ­wher­ever you are, in South Holland and Zeeland, we can be at your location within two hours for incidents or other technical faults. We even have three service engineers permanently stationed in Zeeland. Of course, all

our service engineers perform their work as prescribed by the EKH, the Dutch approved inspection body for hoisting and lifting.

Service contracts ensure 100% freedom from worries We recommend you to do what many of our clients have already done: ­enter into a service contract for 100% freedom from worries and 100% business continuity and safety for your employees.

The equipment you use to hoist and the things you hoist: our engineers are EKH inspectors for all of them.

Machinefabriek Nootenboom B.V. is een machinefabriek gevestigd in Poortugaal, regio Rotterdam Zuid, met een goede verbinding naar de A15 en een afzetgebied binnen de EU. Nootenboom heeft zich reeds in 1948 toegelegd op de fabricage en engineering van speciale machines en machineonderdelen.

Het bedrijf is met name gericht op machines voor o.a. de staalindustrie, de kartonnageindustrie, handels- en productiebedrijven en theaterwereld, waarbij de te hanteren of te bewerken producten in de range van 1 tot 20.000 kg liggen.

Voor de fabricage van machineonderdelen is het machinepark van Nootenboom toegespitst op de enkelstuks- en kleinserie markt.

In opdracht van een klant heeft Mennens Rotterdam op maat een 100 ton’s hijsjuk geëngineerd en gebouwd.

Dit juk werd getest in de hal van Condor en er werden 2 x 70 ton Condor Testgewichten gebruikt.

Mennens Rotterdam was commissioned by a client to engineer and build a 100-ton hoisting beam. This beam was tested in the Condor hall whereby two 70-ton Condor test weights were used.

All hoisting and lifting materials are subject to a statutory re-inspection obligation, while there is a specific deadline for each material for new testing. Testing & Repairs keeps you informed of these deadlines for all materials which we sell and then maintain. You will receive notification in good time.

At Mennens Rotterdam our experts are proud that re-inspection is 100% tantamount to complete overhaul. Your assembly is taken apart, we measure the parts for wear, guarantee possible replacement and spray everything spic-and-span again. With our online application Mennens Certif you are assured of permanent access to your certificates and other hoisting equipment details, wherever you are. The application allows you to manage all the legal inspection aspects of your own hoisting and lifting equipment. Diergaarde Blijdorp: staalkabel in architectuur Staalkabel, een uniek product van geslagen staaldraden voor ­velerlei toepassingen, verkrijgbaar in vele diameters en uitvoeringen.

Naast toepassingen als hijskabel, verbindings­middel, trekkabel, tuikabel en veiligheidslijn heeft staalkabel zich ook bewezen in de architectuur.

Met ons JAKOB® architectuur ­programma hebben we al vele mooie designs mooier kunnen maken. Naast spankabels in onder andere brugconstructies wordt van staalkabel het ­webnet ­geproduceerd. In 2015 is dit webnet toegepast in de tuin van het nieuwe leeuwenverblijf in de Rotterdamse Diergaarde Blijdorp.

Daarmee hebben we niet alleen een veilige omheining gerealiseerd, tevens is het een ­prachtig compleet ontwerp geworden, gecombineerd oud en nieuw.

De Hef (Koningshavenbrug): de juiste ervaring voor een grote uitdaging De Koningshavenbrug in Rotterdam is buiten dienst sinds 1993 omdat het treinverkeer tegenwoordig door de Willemsspoortunnel rijdt.

Sindsdien is de Konings­havenbrug

een monument. De brug staat normaal altijd in zijn bovenste positie, om de vaarweg vrij te houden. Echter, als de ­windkracht te hoog wordt, laat men de brug zakken. De brug blijft dus ­operationeel. Het val van de brug heeft een lengte van 55 meter, de torens van de brug zijn ongeveer 70 meter hoog ten opzichte van het waterpeil.

Een realistische uitdaging De brug wordt op en neer ­bewogen met behulp van ­staalkabels. Mennens heeft de opdracht om ook bij deze brug de kabels te vervangen. Het gaat om 48 stuks ­evenwichtkabels, 4 stuks ophaalkabels, 4 stuks ­neerhaalkabels en 4 stuks ­rechthoudkabels.

Mennens is gespecialiseerd in het leveren en monteren van dit soort kabels. De kabels moeten voldoen aan zeer hoge kwaliteitseisen. Het vervangen van de staalkabels staat gepland voor september 2016. Dit wordt een hele uitdaging, maar door de ervaring bij gelijksoortige projecten zeker uit te voeren voor Mennens.

Rotterdam Zoo: steel wire rope in architecture Steel wire rope, a unique product of twisted strands of wire suitable for all kinds of applications, available in many diameters and versions.

Besides applications such as hoisting cable, connection device, towing cable, rigging cable and safety line, wire rope has also proven itself in architecture.

Using our JAKOB® architecture ­program, we have already made many lovely designs even more ­beautiful. Wire rope is used for tension cables in bridge structures, but also for producing web nets.

We used a web net in 2015 in the garden of the new lion enclosure at Rotterdam Zoo - Diergaarde Blijdorp.

We not only built a safe fence, we also ­contributed to a magnificent ­complete design, combining old and new.

De Hef (Koningshavenbrug): the right experience for a big challenge The Koningshavenbrug in Rotterdam was decommissioned in 1993 when rail traffic started going through the Willems rail ­tunnel.

The bridge has been a monument since then.

Usually the bridge is always at its top ­position, to keep the waterway free. But if the wind force becomes too strong, the bridge is lowered. The bridge thus remains operational.

The bridge has a 55-metre drop; the towers are approximately 70 metres high compared with the water level.

Steel wire rope is used to raise and lower the bridge. Mennens has been commissioned to replace the steelwire ropes for this bridge.

This involves 48 balance steelwire ropes, 4 lifting steelwire ropes, 4 pulldown steelwire ropes and 4 steelwire ropes for stabilization.

A realistic challenge Mennens specialises in supplying and fitting these kinds of steelwire ropes. The steelwire ropes must satisfy extremely stringent quality requirements. The replacement of the wire ropes is scheduled for September 2016. It will be a significant challenge, but our experience with similar projects makes it one that Mennens can handle.

In the context of CSR we seized the occupation of the new business premises, and the brand new workshop as well, as an opportunity to analyse and document all our processes and procedures, coordinate them for maximum efficiency and safety, apply them physically and instruct our employees with them. The result? Visible safety thanks to safe routings, the use of safety devices and clothing and the application of numerous codes of conduct.

Commitment to sustainability We took great care with CSR in other areas as well with our new building.

Mennens Rotterdam: partner of the Dirk Kuyt Foundation We fulfil our social role as 足committed business through our active partnership with the Dirk Kuyt Foundation. This foundation

supports and helps organise more than sixty sporting events throughout the Netherlands.
