NZ Merit Index (NZMI) Like BW, NZMI is an index system designed to create a starting point for the ideal cow to suit the average NZ farming system. Unlike BW, NZMI includes type traits.

NZMI breeds towards strong capacious cows that are efficient producers of high milk value, with good shed traits, fertility and the udders to keep them profitably producing in the herd for longer.

NZMI Consists of: Production (41%): Protein BV (kg), MILK BV (L) Management (41%): Liveweight BV (kg), Fertility BV (%), Somatic Cell Score BV, Total longevity BV (days), Calving Difficulty BV (%), Overall Opinion (BV).

Type (18%): Capacity (BV), Rump Angle (BV), Udder Overall (BV)

understanding usa terminology Production Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) for Milk, Fat and Protein predict the average production of the sire’s future daughters above or below the breed genetic base for pounds of Milk, Fat and Protein per lactation.

Physical Trait Evaluation or Linear Trait Appraisal for Type has been generated by the breed associations.

The description gives a detailed look at the Type analysis by trait, based on classification scores made by the breed associations.

Reliability (%Rel) reflects the number of progeny and distribution of those progeny in different herds.

The calculated Standard Transmitting Abilities (STA) for individual traits are comprised of herdmate comparisons.

While the PTAT for sires is an excellent ranking tool, individual trait STAs relate to the specific areas in which an individual sire will improve or fail to improve.

Productive Life Length of productive life is highly correlated with production and with linear type trait scores, particularly for the udder traits. PTAs for productive life are measured using DHIA culling data. Productive life is measured as total months in milk by seven years of age with a 10 month maximum lactation.

CALVING EASE Calving Ease is expressed as the expected % difficult births when bred to virgin heifers. It is the percent of progeny from first calf heifers that are born with difficulty. Breed average for difficult births in first calf heifers is 8.47%. Nearly all sires can be used on mature cows with few difficult calvings expected.

Type PTA Type measures a sire’s ability to transmit overall type to his progeny. This data is summarized and presented by the breed association and is within breed comparisons.

Number of Observations is the number of reported calvings used in the calculation of % difficult births.

PTA Percent Test Value measures a sire’s ability to transmit Fat and Protein Test.

Udder Composite Score ranks bulls for overall udder improvement. This composite is calculated using Standard Transmitting Ability for the udder traits.

Denotes sires that are below breed average for Calving difficulty.

Denotes sires with higher fertility, based on Sire Conception Rate.

SCE = Sire Calving Ease. Genetic Base is all sires born in 2000; Holsteins average 8.47%. DCE = Daughter Calving Ease. Genetic base is all sires born in 1995; Holsteins average 7.99%.

Milking Speed/Temperament: range is 1-5, 5 = good, 3 = average.

Justin Edgecombe, Manager of Dairy Operations, Waratah Farms uses Heat Seekers on the whole dairy herd and also on the yearling heifers and they have found several key benefits of the Heat Detection devices. They “apply up to 1000 per milking and the ease of application with the self adhesive Seekers is clearly ahead of other methods. The peel and stick method is easy and provides real “stickability” to the cow when applied. They are providing accurate selection of cows in heat and all staff are very confident when picking up the cows to be mated. The bright colours of pink, red and blue are easily seen and have made a crucial task that much easier since using the Heat Seeker.“

On farm training courses are available and cover: Anatomy and Physiology; Handling of semen; A.I technique and Heat Detection.

The courses which started in 2010, have been very well received. If you are interested in training in 2012, please contact us for an application form and to find out when the next course is available in your area.

The courses are limited to a small number of trainees so that we can offer personal attention.
