Fun Activities in the Holidays
Summer 2015
“Grow Wild� seed planting On a very warm Tuesday over Easter, we worked with Norma Greene from Cynefin and Jake Castle from Keep Wales Tidy to prepare some ground to plant wild flower seeds which had been donated by Kew Gardens under their Grow Wild project. We were joined by some young children visiting relatives on the estate. They sprinkled compost and water over the seeds which were planted by Alison Chaplin, Community Development Project Officer. Hopefully, some of the wild flowers will be appearing shortly.
Litter Pick Norma and Jake also came out on the Thursday and, with help from Tidy Towns and a couple of residents, we collected 10 bags of rubbish from the Old Flats Site. Six bags went to recycling and four bags were placed with general waste.
D-I-Y Bee House Afterwards we went back to The Fact Shop for refreshments and began assembling our D-I-Y bee houses. Made from cut bamboo canes stuffed into an old cardboard inner from a toilet roll, they are bound together with plastic tape then placed inside an old pop bottle container, before being hung up outside. www.wwha.co.uk | 0800 052 2526 | Twitter: @wwha

Get creative with rubbish Litter Pick We started with a litter pick. Norma Greene from Cynefin and Jake Castle from Keep Wales Tidy joined us again on a dry, but cold, afternoon in May. With the help of some enthusiastic young volunteers, we collected another six bags of rubbish from the field site and part of a child’s size pool table.
Street Scene We then made a “street scene” with some of the rubbish. We went back to The Fact Shop for refreshments and were joined by some more young helpers. Using an old board, pens, glue. leaves, and some items destined for the recycling box, they eagerly set about making their own ideal houses and gardens.
Watch out for Guerilla Gardening in August In August we will be planting some black and red current bushes along the fences in the old flats field area. You will be able to pick the fruit produced in future years for free. Come along and give us a hand.

Recycling and waste collection We know there have been issues since the new Waste Recycling criteria came in, but hopefully this will bed in over time as people become more used to the system. Since the system went live, we have learnt the following which wasn’t in the booklet provided:
Paper
Shredded paper should be put in a clear plastic bag and can then be put alongside newspapers / magazines etc. in the black/green box.
Cardboard
Large items of cardboard cannot fit in the slots in the vans, so please cut them into smaller pieces and they will then be collected. Alternatively, take it up to the Amenity Centre in Dowlais and place it in the cardboard container there.
Glass jars/bottles
Please remove the tops of the glass container and place the tops in the blue sack in plastic or metal. The glass container goes in the black/green bin with cardboard.
Plastic bottles
Please remove the tops from bottles and place them in the blue sack with the bottle. As advised in the booklet, all cans / bottles /plastic containers / jars should be washed before placing them in the appropriate container. The Council receives more money for recycling if it isn’t contaminated and this will help to reduce future Council Tax rises.
Flats Those of you living in the Flats have a different recycling system to the houses. We have issued you with separate instructions. We contacted the Council to sort out issues with non-collection of the large wasted bins for the flats when the new system came into place. It appears that we were missed off their new list. As they had changed the staff on the round, this wasn’t picked up until we brought it to their attention.
Nos. 70 - 80
There were also issues with waste not being collected from these properties. We contacted the Council who have now agreed to collect the recycling from outside resident’s doors in this area, rather than the car park.

So far we have knocked on 30 doors and we intend to knock on everyone’s door by the end of the summer. It is two years since we asked you for your views / experience of living on Twyncarmel as part of our ‘Have we listened’ approach to service delivery. It is important to us that we do what matters to the majority of you, so please take a few minutes to answer our questions. We hope to share the main results with you in the next edition of the newsletter.
