So we organised some October half term fun on Twyncarmel

Herman Valentin arranged a 5-a-side football tournament on Wednesday 29th October as part of the Get it Together project with Treharris Boys and Girls Club and Princes Trust. The games were ably refereed by PCSOs Jason Davies and Owen Dando from the Neighbourhood Policing Team.

The Association donated £50 worth of DW Sports vouchers to the winning team’s Youth Clubs. Mid Cluster Communities First Team opened up the Fact Shop and laid on refreshments, as well as organising a raffle, face painting, crafts, pumpkin carving etc.

Back by popular demand Young residents from Twyncarmel joined staff from Wales and West, Cynefin, Keep Wales Tidy and Tidy Towns to clear litter from the old flats field site on Twyncarmel.

“I was asked by some of the children when we would be doing this again following our August litter pick” said Ali Chaplin our Community Development Project Officer.

“They really enjoy it and it is a visible example of how we have listened to residents concerns.”

Pumpkin carving

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service donated some pumpkins. Following the litter pick, the fire crew helped the children scoop out and carve their own pumpkins, ready to use on Halloween.

Some seeds from the event have been kept by Norma Green, from Cynefin, so the children can to try to grow their own pumpkins next year.

February 2015 half term litter pick and activities We will be organising another litter pick during February half term (16th to 20th February) – see leaflet nearer the date.

After the Litter Pick we will again be providing refreshments for the children.

More Information on our October article – “Fly-tipping update” As reported in the last newsletter, the field area by the bus turning circle is a fly tipping hotspot.

We worked with the Council, the landowner and other agencies to clear the site last October and the landowner put up a new fence.

Rolf Brown, the Council’s Countryside Officer will be busy in the New Year, planting 1,000 trees alongside the new fence.

Once grown, the trees will form a hedge that will not only make it difficult to fly tip there again, but will become a new home for a number of plants and animals.

We also hope to organise a fun and interactive session of activities and games run by Cats Protection based around cat behaviour and responsible pet ownership.

Phil’s a First Aid Hero All WWH site staff attend an emergency first aid training course every three years.

During the training we are shown : • how to bandage cuts, • place someone in the recovery position • and do basic CPR in emergency situations On a course recently Phil’s been very accident prone – here he is with a bandaged cut on his hand, arm and head!

Thankfully he recovered quickly!!

• WWH staff out and about on the scheme more often • The Neighbourhood Policing Team on the scheme more often In response we have set up a base for staff and agencies on Twyncarmel Flat 47 Twyncarmel has been set up to allow staff, police and other agencies somewhere to: • hold meetings and surgeries • gain access to the internet on site to help us answer any queries you may have when we visit you, a lot quicker.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team is holding ‘Cuppa with a Copper’ sessions at Flat 47 – alternate Thursdays 3 - 4pm The Neighbourhood Policing Team has also held two street surgeries on Twyncarmel and will be holding more if there is a need.

At the moment, there have been very few incidents of anti-social behaviour or criminal activity reported on Twyncarmel.
