MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Mr. Isaac Awuondo Today’s biodiversity loss and climate change challenges are the defining crises of our time. We can win these two races, but only through the power of collaboration at international, national, and local levels.

As Kenya’s world-renowned marathoner and Olympic Champion Eliud Kipchoge said in his message to world leaders at the 26th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP26), in Glasgow, United Kingdom, “We need to finance our ambitions to tackle climate change. The world must invest in nature to win the race. This is a race where everyone will be a winner. In the fight against climate change and nature loss. A promise without action is an expensive debt.”

One thing is clear, business as usual is not good enough. It is heartening to see that the fight to reverse biodiversity loss is gaining some wins. In Kenya, the continued rebounding of black rhinos and the consistent zero poaching of elephants in priority landscapes is a cherished achievement.

Our country is already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change. Prolonged and frequent droughts have robbed pastoralist communities in southern and northern Kenya of their livelihoods. But no one is immune from the impact of climate change; it is affecting water quantity in our freshwater sources.

It is important that we bring together all stakeholders - businesses, the private sector, the public sector, communities, and governments - to tackle these crises.

Now is the time for bold collective action. Our livelihoods depend on it.

Nature depends on it. If we are to Race to Zero and reverse biodiversity loss in our country, we must work together. We must expand our partnerships and collaborations.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Mr. Mohamed Awer This report covers WWF-Kenya’s achievements for the period 01 July 2021 to 30 June 2022. The year 2021 saw the slow opening up of Kenya following the arrival of Covid 19 vaccines in the country. The onset of vaccinations and relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions ushered in a slow resumption of normal life and business after more than two years since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amid the challenges of working from home and the cautious upscaling of fieldwork, major gains continued to be made in achieving our conservation goals. The population of black rhinos continued to rebound with a 5.9% growth, surpassing the national annual target of 5%. The UN Member States’ historic agreement at UNEA’s 5.2 meeting in Nairobi made an important decision towards negotiations for a legally-binding treaty on plastic pollution. This marked a pivotal moment to start a journey towards a global commitment to eliminate the problem of plastics on a global scale.

In Mombasa, our circular economy initiative gained traction by establishing a circular plastic value chain linking over 1,000 waste managers to recyclers. The enactment of the Sustainable Waste Management Act, 2022, and the push for adopting the Extended Producer Responsibility, 2021, Regulations will contribute towards the efforts to halt the degradation of our natural environment.

With Kenya’s economy largely driven by nature, adopting sustainable consumption and production practices play a vital role in conserving natural resources like water and fisheries. Hence the establishment of Kenya’s first KS 1758 certified organic green grocery selling certified fresh produce in the Lake Naivasha Basin presents a model for replication in other landscapes.

Despite the COVID-19 challenges, these achievements were made possible through the strong culture of collaboration with the Government and stakeholders – communities, private sector partners, donors, and the WWF staff.

RUNNING THE RACE TO ZERO

When he is not training in the high altitude Kaptagat Forest ecosystem in Elgeyo Marakwet County, renowned marathoner and Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge is winning another marathon somewhere in the world, breaking his world record or planting trees on the degraded gazetted forest blocks in Kaptagat.

He never disappoints, Kipchoge, the two-time Olympic champion (2016 and 2020) who has won the majority of his career marathons, added his voice to research to advocate for action-led interventions backed by science, data, and the indigenous knowledge of communities to help restore and protect Kenya’s disappearing forests.

At a time when the world was at a standstill due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Kipchoge partnered with WWF-Kenya and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and led Kenyans in tree planting initiatives in compliance with health regulations. His goal was to help curb the spread of such zoonotic diseases in the future by creating a buffer zone between the wild and people settlements, protecting water resources, and averting the impacts of climate change.

To achieve this goal, Kipchoge signed a Memorandum of Understanding with KFS to adopt 50.8 hectares of the degraded Kaptagat forest. The adopted site is part of WWF-Kenya’s UK Pact Greening Kaptagat Landscape Restoration Programme, implemented with the Government of Kenya, local communities, and Eliud Kipchoge Foundation and funded by UK Aid and Trillion Trees.

The project restored over 700 hectares of degraded forest through seedling planting and fencing off sites to allow natural regeneration. Further, local farmers were trained on sustainable farming, reducing degradation through overgrazing and encroachment on the forest for more farmland. Kipchoge also led global and national advocacy to mainstream climate policy with support from the project. The marathoner addressed world leaders on 2nd November in Glasgow, Scotland, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference - 26th Conference of The Parties (COP26), galvanizing global support for the Race to Zero campaign. The Race to Zero campaign is a UN-backed initiative that calls on leaders and non-state actors to take decisive and immediate action to cut global emissions by half by 2030 and create a healthier, fairer, and zero-carbon world.

In the Living Planet Report, 2022, a biennial scientific publication by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and ZSL (Zoological Society of London) Institute of Zoology, Kipchoge is quoted saying, “We are the generation who inherited the world from the pioneers of yesteryears and our great contribution will be anchored on sustainability. Our task, however, is not so simple. It is a race against time to save what is left of our home. Every minute counts just like a marathon. My generation of athletes will run this marathon to save our forests.”

WILDLIFE Portrait of Dire Situation as Drought Wipes Out Livelihoods and Wildlife

After the Government of Kenya declared the drought ravaging the country a national disaster in 2021, WWF-Kenya helped raise awareness of the plight of the affected people, livestock and wildlife in northern Kenya through media engagement. The harrowing images of wildlife carcasses, dying livestock and testimonies of the affected communities trickled down to the nation and our WWF Network, sparking an emergency response initiative for climate change adaptation and resilience.

In January 2022, WWF-Kenya launched the emergency drought response in partnership with Marsabit County, Kenya Wildlife Service, National Environment Management Authority and National Drought Management Authority (NDMA). The relief package, distributed by NDMA, saw foodstuff worth 500,000 Kenya Shillings, 180,000 litres of clean drinking water and 2,000 bales of hay reach affected communities in North Horr.

“We started losing our livestock about three months ago. Camels are dying.

Goats and sheep have been dying. If it doesn’t rain in the next two or three months, we may lose everything,” said Mata Sora, Chief, Gas location in North Horr Marsabit on 15th January 2022.

Elephant Conservation Numbers Don’t Lie: Elephant Populations Study WWF-Kenya funded an aerial census of elephants in three critical elephant ranges in Kenya. The exercise, carried out in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), found that the Tsavo, Meru and Laikipia-SamburuMarsabit ecosystems host 22,732 elephants.

The Tsavo ecosystem hosts 14,879 elephants, while Laikipia-SamburuMarsabit hosts 6,876 individuals with 986 elephants in the Meru ecosystem.

Tsavo East in the Tsavo Conservation Area had the highest number of elephants, with 5,023 individuals, while Tsavo East North had a population of 3,520. Taita Ranches hosted 3,095 individuals while Tsavo West had 2,409 elephants.

MIKE Monitoring Reduces Elephant killings in MauMara-Loita WWF-Kenya supported the training of KWS rangers on Monitoring the Illegal Killings of Elephants (MIKE) and problem animal management in the Greater Mau-Mara-Loita ecosystem. The training of rangers has resulted in reduction of elephant poaching through increased information sharing, recording of reliable and accurate data, and effective inter-agency coordination. Overall, 125 rangers in the Maasai Mara ecosystem and 14 in Loita-Shompole were equipped with skills that have led to quick response to poaching and other wildlife crime incidents.

However, out of the 23 elephant deaths reported during the period, 10 were due to human-wildlife conflict, 10 to natural deaths, and 3 to unknown factors.

The reduced elephant mortality resulted from improved surveillance and monitoring of elephants in the landscape. A total of 13 collared individuals were monitored by KWS under the Mara Elephant Project, especially in light of climate change-induced impacts like drought, poaching threats, and human-wildlife conflict as the majestic giants traverse landscapes in search of pasture, water, and potential mates.

Extension of Solar-Powered Elephant Deterrent Fence Eliminates Retaliatory Attacks As part of the continuing implementation of the SAFE System Strategy co-developed by KWS and WWF-Kenya, an additional 7km solar-powered elephant deterrent fence was installed at Oloonkolin area in Trans Mara West along the Mara River, adding to the 3km erected in the previous year and extending acreage of farmland under protection from elephant crop raids. The fence has led to the elimination of elephant retaliatory attacks and increased crop yield for the local communities.

Ilatartok Livestock Guardians of Kajiado In Kajiado County, the Land for Life project implementing partner, the South Rift Association of Land Owners (SORALO), piloted the use of the Ilatartok – livestock guardians – to reduce livestock predation in Shompole and Olkiramatian areas where humanwildlife conflict cases rise during the dry season. The Ilatartoks help local herders avoid dangerous wildlife and recover livestock.

Seventeen Ilatartoks from eight different villages were deployed to recover on average 5-15 livestock per day.

Rhino Conservation Black Rhino Population Rebounds The WWF-Kenya rhino conservation initiative contributed to the growth of black rhinos by 5.9% to reach a confirmed total of 938 rhinos by the end of 2021, surpassing the national target of 830 individuals. The success resulted from the implementation of the national Black Rhino Action Plan (BRAP 2017-2022) led by KWS in partnership with key stakeholders.

WWF-Kenya supported the end term review of BRAP 2017-2022 in all rhino sites in Kenya and the development of BRAP 2022-2026, an exercise KWS spearheaded.

The success of rhino conservation has also depended on dedicated rhino rangers, who often work in remote sites.

Their welfare, skill, and equipment are vital to the rebounding of the population of black rhinos, hence WWF-Kenya’s provision of cold weather clothing for 247 rangers in three National Parks.

Further, WWF-Kenya supported the construction of solar-powered accommodation, an office, a kitchen block, and a water storage facility for rangers at the Nairobi National Park. A watch tower was constructed at Ruma National Park. In addition, 103 rangers in three National Parks received training on crime-scene and rhino monitoring procedures. Lastly, the automation of the National Rhino Monitoring and Reporting System also kickstarted the generation of automated site-based reports.

Lion Conservation Zero Predation Reported thanks to Predator Proof-Bomas & Lion Lights The Maasai Mara sub-landscape recorded 427 human-wildlife conflict cases, but none of them occurred in areas where lion lights and predatorproof bomas have been installed. This highlights the effectiveness of the Safe System Strategy for the Mara, developed in 2019.

The strategy was designed to address the increasing human-lion conflict, which was identified as a significant challenge in lion conservation in Kenya’s National Recovery and Action Plan for Lion and Spotted Hyena (2020-2030). One of the critical interventions for the South of Kenya North of Tanzania (SOKNOT) area was acquiring 3,400 predator lights distributed in the transboundary landscape. In the Amboseli and the Tsavo sublandscapes, 20 predator-proof bomas were constructed during the reporting period.

To enhance the ability of rangers to respond effectively to cases of human-wildlife conflict, WWF-Kenya procured various equipment, including ranger clothing, gloves, and cameras, for teams in the Mara, Tsavo, and Amboseli landscapes.

FOREST National Forest Landscape Restoration CSOs Alliance Formed The formation of the National Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) Civil Society Organisation Alliance in March 2022 marked an important achievement in our country’s forest restoration efforts. WWF-Kenya played a pivotal role in bringing together 25 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), giving them a unified voice on forest and landscape restoration.

The support was facilitated through the FLR Bengo project in Naivasha.

Chepalungu Forest Rehabilitation: 280 hectares restored The restoration initiative of the Chepalungu Forest Reserve rehabilitated 280 hectares through the planting of 281,000 tree seedlings. The tree seedlings have a survival rate of 75%.

Additionally, a key wetland in the forest was fenced to prevent encroachment having been under threat from grazing. Since the fencing, there has been marked improvement with the constant presence of the African Crowned Cranes, an indicator of the good health of the wetland.

Further, an additional three kilometers of the Chepalungu Forest was fenced by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and the Bomet County Government. Previously, WWF-Kenya had erected a 4.7 kilometers fence along the perimeter of the Siongiroi forest block.

So far, 350 hectares of the degraded Chepalungu Forest Reserve have been rehabilitated through tree planting.

Forest Assessments The national forest conservation supported the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) assessments for the Gandini and Mstwakara Kaya Forests and Mwache Forest Reserve in coastal Kenya, and the Logoman, South Kinangop, North Kinangop, and Geta forest reserves in the Kenya Rift Lakes region.

Nyandarua became the first county in Kenya to launch a Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy to restore deforested and degraded landscapes. The county committed to contributing 201, 255 hectares to Kenya’s African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (ARFI100) commitment of 5.1 million hectares target through the 10year strategy. The Nyandarua County Government developed the 10-year plan with technical assistance and financial support from KFS and WWF-Kenya. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development provided funds for the initiative through WWFKenya. The restoration plan aligns with the Government’s National Forest and Landscape Restoration Action Plan (FOLAREP) 2022-2027.

POLICY AND ADVOCACY Focus on Climate Change Through the National Environment Civil Society Alliance of Kenya (NECSA-K), WWF-Kenya submitted recommendations in a memorandum to the Ministry of Energy, urging the need to uphold public and environment safety.

Ahead of the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 27) in Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt, WWFKenya supported Kenya’s Climate Change Directorate to develop policy submission to the UNFCCC with a focus on mitigation and adaptation.

In preparation for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of Parties (COP15) in Montreal, Canada, WWF-Kenya presented policy proposals to the National CBD focal point.

A Plastic-free Ocean For All In March 2022, during the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2) in Nairobi, WWF-Kenya called for resolutions on a global ban on plastics and a resolution on nature-based solutions. The Assembly adopted the two resolutions.

UN Member States agreed on a mandate to negotiate a legally binding global instrument to end plastic pollution, a historic decision and a big leap towards a plastic-free ocean for all. The proposed framework will be in place by the end of 2024.

National Wildlife Strategy

Under the Voices for Diversity Project, WWF-Kenya also reviewed the National Wildlife Strategy and submitted recommendations to the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage on the fast-tracking implementation of the strategy.

OIL AND GAS Influencing Environmental Management Working with the Kenya Oil and Gas Working Group (KOGWG), WWF-Kenya developed and submitted recommendations on proposed amendments to the Environmental Management and Coordination Bill, 2022. The Environmental Management and Coordination Act is the framework law on environmental management and conservation.

Further, in partnership with KOGWG, we also reviewed the Natural Resources Benefit Sharing Bill, 2021. After the call for public input in February 2022, KOGWG submitted a memorandum in collaboration with other civil society organizations on the proposed Bill that was submitted to the Senate.

Extractive sector: Development of Deposit Bonds Guidelines WWF-Kenya and the Kenya Oil and Gas Working Group (KOGWG) were part of a task force that developed sector-specific Deposit Bonds Guidelines and standard rates for the oil and gas sector in Kenya in accordance with the Draft Environmental and Coordination (EMCA) (Deposit Bonds), Regulations, 2018.

As part of greening the industrial footprint, we also helped complete sectorspecific guidelines for the mining industry to ensure developers undertake the necessary rehabilitation and restoration of operation areas upon the conclusion of their activities.

Project Oil Kenya: Proposed Water Pipeline Following the proposal for the Project Oil Kenya water supply pipeline to transport water from Turkwel Dam in West Pokot County to South Lokichar Oil Basin in Turkana County, WWF-Kenya reviewed the project’s Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) study.

In a memorandum shared with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for consideration, WWF-Kenya noted that the proposal to increase water offtake points from six to nine would lead to water shortages while establishing only one water offtake point in Turkana East would not be sufficient to meet the local community demand.

WWF-Kenya also recommended the establishment of a structure to guide compensation for land acquired from communities for the 90.5km water pipeline project. Communities feared that they would encounter compensation challenges because their land is held in trust by County Governments.

Further, WWF-Kenya recommended the establishment of a well-defined waste management strategy to deal with waste produced during the construction phase of the project.

The South Lokichar Basin Risk Assessment report was updated to reflect the changes to the field development plan to include Ekale oil field alongside Twiga, Ngamia, and Amosing oil fields.

Stakeholders highlighted the need for more capacity building of technical personnel to manage hazardous waste and consistently monitor oil and gas infrastructure sites and their impacts on the environment and communities.

Further, the assessment revealed that the proposed water pipeline project would likely escalate the conflict between communities.

It was recommended that issues relating to land acquisition, resettlement, and compensation needed to be resolved before starting any operations within the South Lokichar Basin.

Women Inclusion in Oil and Gas Activities WWF-Kenya undertook engagements with women from Amu and Pate Islands who live in the gazetted Blocks L4 and L13 in Lamu County.

The workshops sought to establish the impacts of oil and gas exploration by Zarara Oil and Gas Limited on women and establish their involvement in the project designs for the Lamu-Lokichar Crude Oil Pipeline’s Environmental and Social Impact Assessment consultation process and the Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment study for the Lamu Port, South Sudan, Ethiopia Transport Corridor, commonly referred to as LAPSSET project.

INNOVATION Wildlife Credits As part of the Sweden lion-funded project, WWF-Kenya launched the Wildlife Credits initiative that engaged key stakeholders, including representatives from conservancies in the South of Kenya, North of Tanzania (SOKNOT) transboundary landscape, wildlife management areas representatives from Tanzania and WWF experts to share experiences in Namibia and review WWF-Kenya Wildlife Credits pilot project. Participants drew a work plan to roll out Wildlife Credits in Oloisukut and Mara Siana conservancies.

Innovative Business Models We trained 700 waste managers on innovative business models, business plan development and the design of market linkages and financing under the Danida Market Development Partnerships’ Solar for Cooling project. The Solar for Cooling project supports the enhancement of the marine and coastal fisheries sector for the benefit of small-scale fishers.

SPATIAL PLANNING With technical and financial support from WWF-Kenya, Bomet became the fifth county in Kenya to launch a Spatial Plan after Lamu, Makueni, Baringo and Kericho Counties.

The launch of the Bomet County Spatial Plan informed the protection and restoration of forest resources like the Chepalungu Forest.

WWF-Kenya also produced a Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) roadmap for the Western Indian Ocean region jointly with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission-UNESCO and the mandated government institution in Comoros.

Further, WWF-Kenya produced a stakeholder collaboration guide with the South West Indian Ocean Tuna Forum (SWIOTUNA) for the role of civil society organizations in Marine Spatial Planning.

FOREST Greening Kwale As part of our commitment for greening Kwale County, over 23,000 hectares of forest have been restored with 80 hectares rehabilitated through enrichment planting, 20, 520 through natural regeneration and 2,400 through the development of Management Plans.

This was supplemented by training and equipping 40 community scouts to fill the surveillance gap in Kenya Forest Service operations.

WWF-Kenya also supported the local Community Forest Associations in initiating alternative livelihoods. Communities in Mrima, Marenje, Gonja, Gogoni, and Kaya Mtswakara engaged in beekeeping, while in Shimba Hills, people took up butterfly farming. Dzombo and Kaya Gandini dwellers ventured into eco-tourism activities and conservation agriculture, respectively.

Greening Industrial Footprint Through Cleaner Production In an effort to reduce the footprint of industrial development, WWF-Kenya integrated Coast Calcium, Kwale International Sugar, Base Titanium, Agrofibre Limited, Delphin Steel Mill, Kentaste Limited into the Kenya Cleaner Production Project with a focus on water and energy efficiency emphasis.

A mangrove status mapping for Lamu Southern Swamps and Mida Creek that was conducted by Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and WWF-Kenya revealed the degradation of the mangrove ecosystem.

Through the Lamu Mangrove Conservation Project, six community scouts were recruited from the local Community Forest Association (CFA) to support KFS in monitoring the 500-hectare restoration site regularly.

While mapping the Mida Creek mangrove sites, 276.5 hectares were recommended for restoration work, 215.6 hectares through natural regeneration protection, and 12.3 hectares and 48.6 hectares were earmarked for restoration through assisted planting and enrichment planting, respectively.

The validation of Participatory Forest Management Plans (PFMPs) for Gede, Jilore and Sokoke were undertaken. Once approved, the 2022-2026 Management Plans will provide the strategic direction for better protection and utilization of the adjacent Arabuko Sokoke forest, including the Mida Creek mangrove ecosystem.

MARINE Marine Ecological Monitoring WWF-Kenya developed a national Marine Protected Area (MPA) ecological monitoring protocol to streamline data collection and help Kisite Mpunguti MPA improve its ecosystem assessment and management effectiveness.

We also facilitated the training of 30 Kisite Mpunguti MPA staff and 42 members of the Beach Management Unit on marine underwater ecological assessment. The trained staff will ensure the sustainable use of the ecological monitoring protocol and the generation of data necessary to assess marine ecosystems.

Coordinating Sea Turtle Conservation WWF-Kenya supported the establishment of a sea turtle inter-agency forum to plan and coordinate conservation initiatives. This forum is set to eliminate duplication of efforts along the Kenyan coastline and maximize sea turtle conservation data collection and impact.

The development of an action plan improved coordination among Turtle Conservation Groups (TCGs) through definition of roles and responsibilities among the various stakeholders.

Kasa App Upgrade for Data-informed Decisions To improve the collection and collation of sea turtle data, WWF-Kenya developed an action plan to revamp the Kasa Application software (Kasa App). Kasa is the swahili word for sea turtle. The App will help in the consolidation of sea turtle conservation data at the national level and in the identification of priority areas for conservation, sensitisation and awareness raising along the Kenyan coast. The data will help highlight hotspots for sea turtle poaching where Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) can take immediate action.

In addition, WWF-Kenya also supported the training of KWS managers and Turtle Conservation Group members on sea turtle conservation protocol and plastic waste management, especially on the proper handling of sea turtles, their nests, and hatchlings. This is critical in ensuring maximum survival rates of translocated hatchlings and streamlining data collection.

Social Assessment of Kisite Mpunguti Marine Protected Area We supported the rollout of a Social Assessment for Protected and Conserved Areas (SAPA), which resulted in developing the initial benefit-sharing guidelines for local communities. The assessment was conducted through public participation to determine the positive and negative impacts of the Kisite Mpunguti MPA on the local communities. The information garnered will inform the development of the next Kisite Mpunguti MPA management plan. The benefit-sharing guidelines will help local communities realize benefits emanating from the Marine Protected Area and garner local support in the daily running and enforcement of regulations. In addition, WWF-Kenya also supported the training of 30 Kenya Wildlife Service staff on grievances and complaints handling Kisite Mpunguti Marine Protected Area Staff Certified During the reporting period, we supported twelve (12) KWS staff to successfully obtain the Western Indian Ocean Certification of Marine Protected Area Professionals (WIO-COMPAS). The rangers underwent rigorous training and mentorship sessions to enhance their proficiency in meeting the seven WIO-COMPAS competencies and standards.

Reducing Fish Post-harvest Losses Through Solar Cooling WWF-Kenya conducted pilot cases for the adoption of solar cooling technologies in Lamu County by linking local fish dealers from Amu and Shella Beach Management Units with Solar Systems. The pilot demonstrations acted as test cases for the broader expansion of solar cooling technology in coastal Kenya.

Capacity Building for New Fisheries Officers Thirty-seven (37) newly recruited fisheries officers – 13 women and 24 men– drawn from the County Governments of Lamu, Kilifi, and Kwale were trained on sustainable fisheries, fish quality control, fisheries laws and regulation, and Beach Management Unit leadership and governance.

The trainees were engaged as Trainer of Trainers to provide mentorship to 34 Beach Management Units in Kilifi, Kwale, and Lamu Counties to promote sustainable fisheries practices for improved livelihoods and conservation of marine resources.

Village Savings and Loan Associations: Thinking outside the box During the Financial Year, a strategic partnership was fostered between WWF-Kenya and Finance Earth. We co-developed a bankable business plan through the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance programme to enhance financial access for Village Savings and Loan Associations. The partnership will help guide future initiatives that require out-of-the-box thinking in financing marine conservation efforts

CIRCULAR ECONOMY Following the publication of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) preparedness report, the Circular Economy Initiative led stakeholders in developing a clear roadmap towards enactment and implementation of the regulations. The EPR regulations strive to strengthen the governance structure at the National and County levels towards a circular economy.

The circular economy initiative also effectively established a plastics recycling value chain that linked waste managers to recyclers.

Through the Coca-Cola Foundation’s Waste to Value Project, an extension of the Danida Market Development Partnerships-Waste to Value Project, three community-based groups based in Mombasa set up a mini plastic recovery center equipped with plastic crushers.

In addition, WWF-Kenya oversaw the training of Pwani Circular Economy Association members and community-based groups in environmental stewardship and sustainability skills.

IKI: Overcoming Food Insecurity Using Sustainable Agricultural Practices As Mwanamwenga Chigamba walks along the terraces of his 24-acre farm in Gandhini Kwale County, he points to the bounty of growing crops. This land was dry five years ago, and Chigamba’s crops withered.

But today, Chigamba boasts of never having to shop for vegetables from greengrocers. He only visits the nearby market to buy meat or fish to supplement his diet. On his farm, he harvests cowpeas, green grams, watermelons, maize, kale, spinach, tomatoes, and okra in abundance.

“We learned how to develop vegetable nurseries, how to create kitchen gardens, how to prepare the sunken base and Zai pits, how to plant strategically, and the best procedures for planting. We also learned how to do weeding, the best pruning methods, and how to harvest every vegetable. For every tree, we should not harvest more than two leaves so that the tree has a longer lifespan,” said Chigamba, recalling skills he learned from a project implemented by WWF-Kenya through the support of the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

The German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection spearheads the IKI Project.

The four-year project supported local communities in adopting sustainable agricultural practices by training farmers to build soil and water conservation structures to improve food production.

His kale plants, for instance, save him about 7,200 Kenya Shillings that he would have otherwise spent at the greengrocers every month, he says.

Following the training, Chigamba dug terraces on his hilly land to reduce soil erosion and collect surface water runoff.

He also planted indigenous trees to help retain water. Chigamba has expanded the variety and quantity of crops he grows, keeps bees, and rears poultry on his farm.

Chigamba plans to expand the land under cultivation from 10 to 20 acres to increase his crop yield. The former office messenger at the Kenya Railway Station ventured into crop farming in 2004.

“Before I undertook the training, I was stressed and food insecure. As I complete my second year with the IKI project, I would like to urge WWF-Kenya to support more farmers in the region to reduce the issue of food insecurity in Gandhini,” said Chigamba.

In areas like Gandhini, where semi-arid conditions make it difficult to grow crops, people can now meet their food needs even during the lean season.

At 63 years old and with four wives and 28 children, Chigamba is happy that the training has helped him create a farm that can provide for his family and a model for sustainable agriculture in his community.

A new shop in Kayole, Naivasha, along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway dubbed Vasha Greens, is fighting food waste at the retail level. That is not all; 146 farmers supplying the shop with fresh produce have created a one-of-a-kind market linkage. By them. For them. The 146 smallholder farmers are beneficiaries of the Green Horticulture at Lake Naivasha (GOALAN) Project. The project facilitated their training to adopt sustainable consumption and production practices, which saw the smallholder farmers’ group awarded the Kenya Standard 1758 (KS1758) certification by the Ministry of Agriculture.

The KS 1758 is a mark of quality certification that guarantees sustainable cultivation of fruits and vegetables, adhering to strict criteria and standards that ensure no harm to the environment and consumers. Vasha Greens, powered by solar energy, holds the distinction as Kenya’s first vegetable shop selling certified fresh produce.

The farmers’ group, Lake Naivasha Basin Sustainable Horticulture Farmers, is a Community-Based Organization comprising eight producer groups within Lake Naivasha Basin.

FOREST Forest Landscape Restoration Project in Naivasha The Forest Landscape Restoration Project recorded many achievements, including developing the Natural Resources Benefit Sharing Bill.

Under the Forest Landscape Project, WWF-Kenya developed a market access and value-addition strategy for the agricultural and forestry value chain. Further, a market dialogue linked buyers and sellers of the identified agricultural value chain for tree tomatoes.

Through the project, a total of 187.75 hectares were restored through the planting of 280,200 assorted indigenous tree seedlings. Another 4,320 tree seedlings were planted on farmlands within the project site.

More importantly, Environmental and Social Safeguards were developed, and grievance resolution committees and Ombudpersons were entrenched within the community structures of the Water Resources Users Associations and Community Forest Associations.

On-farm Land Restored Gathers Steam as New Forests Established The Lake Naivasha Reforestation Project established new forest areas within farmlands. Of the 180.4 hectares of on-farm land restored, 40.3 hectares were under agroforestry while 140 hectares were under woodlot planting regime. This added to the 959.6 hectares already restored, bringing to 1,140 hectares of farmlands restored under the project.

Another 115 hectares of riparian areas were secured to fulfill the required 10% of all project area to be managed for biological diversity.

We supported stakeholders and the people of Kaptagat to successfully develop and validate the Kaptagat Integrated Landscape Restoration Plan (2021-2025). We also provided training to over 100 residents of Kaptagat Forest Landscape in seedling production, domestic biogas unit management, and climate-smart agriculture.

An assessment of 32 tree nurseries found a seedling stock of 1.2 million assorted indigenous tree seedlings. Some of the tree nurseries were set up with technical and financial support of WWF-Kenya through the UK PACT-funded Greening Kaptagat Project: Establishing agroforestry and clean energy solutions within a forest-based landscape.

In collaboration with Kenya Forest Service, three forest stations were supported to develop Participatory Forest Management Plans.

The project further supported the 5th Annual Kaptagat Tree Planting drive by purchasing 53,000 seedlings from local nurseries to restore 45 hectares of the degraded forest.

FRESH WATER Journey of Water: River Malewa Campaign The three-day Journey of Water campaign conducted in May 2022 from the upper catchment of the Aberdares along River Malewa brought to the fore water resource management challenges of the Lake Naivasha Basin. It showed the need for duty bearers and right holders’ to take an active role in the conservation and management of the river that supplies 90% of Lake Naivasha’s water. The awareness-raising campaign called for collective action to water resource management and business resilience. The ten-point resolutions developed after the campaign will inform water resource management in the basin.

GOVERNANCE Freshwater Governance The launch of the River Health The launch of the River Health Assessment data collection promoted governance and enhanced accountability in Lake Naivasha Basin. Additionally, documented best practices in wastewater management by hotels and horticultural farms in Naivasha promoted peer learning and inspired change. To improve and monitor governance, WWFKenya updated an inventory of water abstractors and effluent discharged and linked the Water Resources Authority to the private sector to improve compliance.

Elevating Environmental Conservation Up the Political Agenda WWF-Kenya engaged Kenya’s presidential candidates and county aspirants ahead of the 2022 General Election on natural resources management issues to prioritize environmental conservation and sustainable development the muchneeded prominence in political parties’ manifestos, debates, and meet the people campaign trails.

We also supported the process that led to the creation of 55 ward climate change committees in Nakuru County. In addition, 25 ward committees in Nyandarua County received capacity-building support.

Marching to Save River Malewa With climate change impact intensifying, urban dwellers in Kenya feel the impact through frequent water rationing and the buying of water to supplement household needs. Unbeknown to some of them, water does not come from the tap, but the catchment areas - sometimes far-flung springs, mountains, swamps or forests. Rural dwellers, on the other hand, usually have to trek longer distances to find this precious yet finite resource.

But all is not lost. Communities, businesses, governments and other stakeholders are rallying together to join in the conservation and protection of rivers and water sources. In 2022, WWF-Kenya in partnership with the local Water Resource Users Associations (WRUAs) and Water Resource Authority brought together key stakeholders for a three-day Journey of Water campaign for River Malewa.

“Rains have become scarce and unpredictable while the volume of the river is dropping every year. We keep wondering where we’ll get water from,” said Mathayo Gachege, an 80-year-old local who turned up alongside hundreds other community members to participate in the 21km walk along the river from its catchment to its mouth.

“We hope that the participants will commit to become responsible custodians of this scarce yet essential natural resource,” said Dr. William Ojwang - Manager, Kenya Rift Lakes Programme, WWF-Kenya.

River Malewa is an important natural resource, supporting tourism and horticultural farming around Lake Naivasha, and thousands of livelihoods in the basin.

In 2016 and in the middle of a long drought, dozens of flower farms and hotels on the shores of Lake Naivasha shut operations for months after water levels receded sharply.

But while climate change is partly to blame, human activities have also played a big part in worsening the crisis.

“We keep blaming climate change, yet even human activities are also massively contributing to water scarcity,” said John Kinyanjui - a technical manager at the Water Resource Authority.

Throughout the three-day campaign, stakeholders were informed about the threats to water sources and how to address them to ensure a healthy river system. Human activities such as deforestation and degradation of land, forests and tower towers pose a threat to water sources hence the need for collective action to swiftly tackle water quality and quantity related concerns.

Other stakeholders that participated in the campaign were members of the Lake Naivasha Basin Water Resources Users Association, Kenya Water and Sanitation Civil Society Network and officials from Nakuru and Nyandarua County Governments.

WILDLIFE mara: Communities Sensitized on New humanWildlife Conflict Mitigation Strategy WWF-Kenya supported the training of 170 people drawn from the Maasai Mara ecosystem, Suswa and Olukurto regions on the SAFE System Strategy, an approach to human-wildlife conflict that KWS developed with our support. The system helps KWS and other stakeholders to assess the effectiveness of the current status of humanwildlife conflict in various hotspots in the sub-landscape.

The trainees comprised community members, chiefs and conservancy managers.

Mara Siana Conservancy Best-Managed Conservation: METT Assessment Mara Siana Conservancy emerged as the best-managed conservation area, a participatory Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) assessment showed.

Mara Siana had the highest METT score with 71.4 per cent followed by Olkinyei with 69.9 per cent, Maasai Mara National Reserve with 65.9 per cent and Oloisukut Conservancy with 60.2 per cent. A score above 60 per cent is a good indicator that significant efforts have been made to ensure sustainable management of the wildlife conservation areas.

The assessment was conducted during a METT training session for 27 staff of Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association, Maasai Mara National Reserve, and Mara Siana, Oloisukut, Olkinyei, Lemek, and Olderkesi conservancies. WWF-Kenya facilitated the training to help in tracking and monitoring progress in the achievement of the worldwide protected area management effectiveness targets.

Wildlife Conservation: Capacity Building WWF-Kenya supported group ranches on enhanced land and natural resource governance, including the Olgulului Group Ranch’s Land Governance Committee to guide proper Integrated Land Use Plan given the ongoing land subdivision. In Nasaru-Olosho Conservancy, officials were supported to undertake governance capacity building.

Support for wildlife conservation extended to the implementation of the Safe Systems Strategy, securing wildlife habitats through conservancies, enhanced monitoring, and advocacy. This included supporting management planning for conservancies and setting up sustainable nature-based enterprises.

FOREST Loita Forest: Sustained Efforts Towards Registration Through the Land for Life Project, community consultative meetings were held towards the process of registration of the Loita Forest. The community engaged a legal officer to inform them of avenues for the registration of the forest for conservation and the benefit of the local people. The community was informed of three ways to register the forest: registration as community land through the Registrar of Community Land, registration as a community forest through the Kenya Forest Conservation and Management Act, 2016, and registration as a cultural site through the National Museums and Heritage Act. The disclosure of all registration options is critical for the community to make an informed decision.

Forest: 25,000 Hectares Targeted as Restoration Structures Take Shape The formation of the Entarara Community Forest Association marked an important milestone in the large-scale forest landscape restoration initiative in Loitokitok, Kajiado County. It set off the initiation of development of the Entarara Forest Participatory Management Plan, formation of the Loitokitok Water Resources Users Association (WRUA), development of the WRUA SubCatchment Management Plan and the formation of the Kajiado Beekeepers Cooperatives Union.

The development of the Kajiado County Integrated Development Plan, Climate Change Policy and Kajiado Beekeeping Strategy were also supported by the Forest Landscape Restoration Project funded through the Large-scale Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) in Africa (AREECA) and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

Communities in Loitokitok also received training and practical support for climate change adaptation through climate smart agriculture, soil and water conservation measures such as water resources protection and alternative livelihoods. WWF-Kenya also enhanced the capacity of 15 for water harvesting through support for roof catchment.

The support for natural resources governance resulted in the formation various structures to support restoration: Five sub-county beeking cooperatives, Kajiado County Beekeepers Union, Kajiado County Natural Resources Network - a consortium of two civil society organizations, a Community Forest Association, a Water Resources Users Association, and two restoration forums in Kimana and Kuku.

The FLR initiative seeks to improve livelihoods, land and community resilience.

Management Plans Reviewed for Headwater Forests of Mara River WWF-Kenya developed draft Participatory Forest Management Plans (PFMPs) for the Trans Mara Forest Reserve and Olpusimoru Forest Reserve, for presentation to stakeholders for validation in 2023 with the approval of the Kenya Forest Service Chief Conservator of Forests expected the same year. The Trans Mara Forest Reserve comprises three blocks: Nairotia, Nyangores and Olenguruone.

There has been improved river monitoring along the Naroosura and Kanunka rivers after the setting up of river gauging stations. The Mara River Water Users Association actively collects river health data at strategic sampling points with minimal supervision under WWFKenya’s Citizen-led River Health Assessment initiative. The first River Health Scorecard will be published in 2023. We also facilitated the development of four Sub-Catchment Management Plans in the Mara River Basin.

CLIMATE CHANGE & ENERGY Sustainable Education Through Green Energy Through the Climate Change Adaptation Project, five schools were solarised in the Tsavo Conservation Area.

With funds from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, WWF-Kenya solarised Khadija Muna Primary School, Mkanyatta Primary School, Patani Primary School, Malukiloriti Secondary School, and Kishushe Vocational and Training Institute.

The solarisation of the schools helped build climate change resilience for the community members through the adoption of sustainable energy, a key driver for sustainable development.

In Kishushe, the solarisation of the vocational institute led to the diversification of courses the polytechnic offers, adding welding, agribusiness, and information communication technology learning units.

Another immediate impact of the solarisation was the rise in uptake of hairdressing and garment-making courses because the availability of the solar power allowed the polytechnic to train students using electric power machines that had been lying idle for over two years.

Thousands of community members in Tsavo Conservation Area have access to uninterrupted health services because the solarisation of five health centers in the Tsavo Conservation Area through the Climate Change Adaptation Project.

In Ndilidau, the use of solar power cut operational costs and increased incomes for the health centre through efficient service delivery, with their savings used to buy new equipment for their laboratory.

“The biggest impact is on Linda Mama services. We get more funds because we serve more women. Earlier because of blackouts, we couldn’t process claims for the patients because they would be transferred. Income has now increased. You save more, earn more and reinvest into the dispensary,” said Ndilidau Clinical Officer In-Charge Jacinta Malemba.

The Climate Change Adaptation Project supported the solarisation of Ndilidau Dispensary, Rekeke Model Health Centre, Rekeke Model Health Centre (wards), Mandela Dispensary, and Bamako Dispensary, all in the Tsavo Conservation Area.

Further, we strengthened the capacity of two conservancies in Tsavo Conservation Area, a network organization that brings together community-based conservation organizations in the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem and a 53-member national alliance that has a countrywide coverage. Through our partnership framework, we continued to grow civil society organizations’ technical and institutional capacities in leadership, project management, and resource mobilization as a setting for empowering communities to participate in nature positive initiatives.
