n June 18, Windward School is pleased to be

indward School is pleased to return its Summer camp programs this year, which means that we will have open campus hours Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (Please note that the School will be closed for the entire July 4 Holiday week.) Our wonderful Security team will be around to help keep our community safe and ensure that drop-off and pick-up for camps is as seamless as possible.

MAR VISTA NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION ANNUAL PICNIC

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: • Food (provided by CulinArt Kitchen) • Craft Activities for Kids • Music

• Fun and Games hosting the Mar Vista Neighborhood Association’s Annual Picnic. Located on Windward’s Foley Field, the Picnic will be an afternoon full of fun with our friends and neighbors and will be a great way to kick off Summer!

SUMMER CONSTRUCTION/ PROPERTY DEMOLITION Windward School continues to embark on Part II of its Master Plan. The initial phases of Part II includes the demolition of the building located at 3485 Sawtelle Blvd., which is currently used for administrative offices. The demolition of the existing building will take place largely in July so as to minimize disruption to both school operations and the surrounding community. As we finalize the actual dates, we will reach out to the surrounding community to keep everyone informed.

We welcome neighbors to tour our campus while on site, and we will provide tour guides for anyone that is interested.

Whether your child wants an enriching academic experience, an opportunity to grow as an artist, or a chance to develop his or her athletic skills, Windward has a camp for you. PERFORMING ARTS NEWS AT WINDWARD

W

indward School is known for its exceptional Performing Arts Department. When we are not dealing with pandemic restrictions, we often invite the local community to our performances.

Both James and Julie are leads in Community Partnerships. In their experience as both respected performers in their fields and as longtime educators, this team is creating a network of creatives and changemakers.

This Summer, we are excited to be in full swing offering camp programs in Theatre and Dance, including the Broadway Production Workshop, Dance Intensive, and Improv and Sketch Comedy Writing Camp. Neighbors interested in participating in our Summer programs can learn from our experienced Performing Arts Department faculty. Two members we are excited to introduce are:

James and Julie, in collaboration with colleagues, will oversee the Performing Arts Department’s service learning and community involvement, organize the Performing Arts Summer Camps, as well as develop external affiliations with neighboring schools, arts organizations, and college programs.

SERVICE HONOR INDUCTION CEREMONY On April 26th, 46 Windward high school students were inducted into the Windward School Service Honor Society.

This honor is given to students who have gone above and beyond the service graduation requirement. As part of their application, each student must complete over 100 hours of service in the community, have a letter of recommendation about their service work, and write a personal essay about their service-learning experience. It was a wonderful celebration for the students and their families to share their hard work and service to the community during high school.

BIGGER SUNDAY AT WALGROVE ELEMENTARY On Sunday, May 22nd, Windward partnered with Walgrove Elementary School for our very own “Bigger Sunday” neighborhood beautification event. Parents, faculty, and students from both schools spent the morning together gardening, painting a mural, repairing chicken coops, and fixing up an outdoor classroom.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS Service-learning programs have come to an end for the school year, but we look forward to returning next Fall for inperson afterschool programs with our local elementary schools. Class topics will include acting, coding, science, and much more!
