PART 1 - CONSTRUCTION COMPLETED On Friday, December 3, Windward’s long awaited, eagerly anticipated Academic Hub opened its doors to the community. The new building fosters spaces that encourage design thinking, tinkering, collaborative learning, entrepreneurship, and engagement for all students to flourish. The Academic Hub and the remodeled parking lot both take into account the School’s presence in the Mar Vista neighborhood. The parking lot was reconfigured to mitigate traffic along Palms and its entrance gate was moved away from neighboring homes. The Academic Hub has an interior courtyard that allows for the School community to connect, but also serves as a way to contain the campus (and corresponding noise) from the surrounding Mar Vista community.

It goes without saying that we are so appreciative of our community support, especially our neighbors, who have been so patient during the construction process. We would be thrilled to offer tours of the new facilities to anyone who might be interested.

SUMMER CAMPS RETURN TO CAMPUS

MAR VISTA NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION ANNUAL PICNIC

n June 18, Windward School is pleased to be hosting the Mar Vista Neighborhood Association’s Annual Picnic. Located on Windward’s Foley Field, the Picnic will be an afternoon full of fun with our friends and neighbors and will be a great way to kick off Summer!

indward has the program for you! Camps are open to the public and are a great way to meet new friends and enjoy the Summer learning something new. Whether your child wants an enriching academic experience, an opportunity to grow as an artist, or a chance to develop his or her athletic skills, Windward has a camp for you. Details of our offerings and sign ups are available on our website summercamps@windwardschool.org.

DOING OUR PART—TRAFFIC, PARKING, AND SECURITY REMINDERS

A

t Windward, we pride ourselves on being a good neighbor. As part of that commitment, we not only have signage around campus to remind and encourage the respect of our community, but we also continually remind our community to be mindful of traffic to and from campus. This includes encouraging our students to use our outsourced transportation service (Tumbleweed Bus Program) and requiring that families carpool to minimize the number of vehicle trips.

Additionally, we routinely remind our community:

• to be cautious when entering and exiting the campus • where they can and can’t park • to drop off and pick up their students at the assigned times

We also have extra support staff to help monitor the neighboring streets, who serve as crossing guards for the Mar Vista community, and we continue to partner with LAPD to ensure that all parking notices and street safety measures—such as illegal turns and parking violations—are enforced.

As a school operating in a residential neighborhood, we strive to do our part in remaining a good neighbor. We hope this ongoing commitment to road safety and campus etiquette will further the positive relationship we have with our neighbors. SERVICE IN THE COMMUNITY AFTERSCHOOL VIRTUAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS Windward School is excited to offer our Virtual Enrichment classes to the following Elementary Schools: • • • •

Grandview Blvd Elementary Mar Vista Elementary Richland Avenue Elementary Walgrove Elementary

Jr. Scientist An 8-week Science program for students in 3rd-5th grade who love to explore! Jr. Scientist is for curious students who want to know why the world works the way it works.

We will be investigating various aspects of science through hands-on lab activities and science projects, utilizing the resources of simple items at home and equipment to bring science to you! Possible topics include microbiology, forensics, chemistry, and aerodynamics.

AIM! Architecture in Minecraft AIM! is an 8-week program for students in 3rd-5th grade. In AIM!, students use Minecraft to design buildings inspired by various forms of Architecture, like Victorian, Modern, and even Pagodas! Students learn about different styles of Architecture, how to create pretty buildings in Minecraft, and work on their Minecraft building skills!

The program aims to develop your love for Art, Building/design in Minecraft, especially Architecture!

MIDDLE SCHOOL SERVICE LEARNING On March 16, 30 Middle School students and their families came together on campus to assemble 150 Spring baskets for refugee families housed by the Minority Humanitarian Foundation, which was created to provide a

humanitarian response to the issues facing asylum-seekers and refugees on a global scale. The baskets were filled with stickers, toys, and snacks.

The group worked together to fill 1500 eggs with candy! These baskets will be distributed at their annual holiday celebration in April.

UPCOMING EVENTS April Earth day celebration—We will have a beach clean-up at the end of April, collaborating with Windward’s Environmental Action and Outdoors club.

May Windward will be participating in Big Sunday, “A Month of Big Sundays,” and we will be completing a School Beautification project in partnership with a local elementary school.
