Conference
BIG 12
The Big 12 Conference celebrates its 21st year as it continues to promote the strength and success of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of fifth-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. The Big 12 Conference, comprised of 10 members, remains the only major conference in the nation to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule. West Virginia and TCU joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 37 million people. More than 4,200 student-athletes from across the United States and around the world compete annually in the sports sponsored by the conference. Whether on the field, in the classroom or in the community, student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Since it began competition in 1996-97, the Big 12 can boast 54 NCAA team titles and 587 individual National Championships. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

“THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE IS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST CONFERENCES IN THE NATION, AND WE COMPETE AGAINST SOME OF THE TOP TEAMS IN COLLEGE TENNIS. IT’S EXCITING TO BE A PART OF THE BIG 12, BECAUSE WE ARE CHALLENGED AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. IT IS NOT EASY TO COMPETE IN THE BIG 12, AND IT NEVER WILL BE.” – MIHA LISAC

IN THE
Choosing to become a Mountaineer is special. Without a professional sports team in the state, folks from across the state and throughout the region love West Virginia University athletics. No school helps its student-athletes more than the people at WVU. Mountaineers have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their university to news, media, alumni, friends, family and the general public. If you take advantage of these opportunities, it can have a positive effect, not only on your career as a student-athlete at West Virginia, but also on your life after you have donned the Old Gold and Blue.

Development
STUDENT-ATHLETE
West Virginia University offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the supporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults While many of the headlines center of the Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the playing field, West Virginia athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. Some of those strides include of 11 consecutive years where the department has had at least one first team Academic All-American. To help its student-athletes achieve academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum - The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in. A total of 488 student-athletes were represented in 2014-15 on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, of which 43 of them registered a 4.0 GPA. Additionally, seven student-athletes were named recipients of the fifth annual Dr. Gerald Large Academic Achievement Award, which is the Big 12 Conference’s highest academic honor. Over 500 student-athletes were honored on WVU’s Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Implemented in 1989, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 4,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll. Ford retired in 2011 after 44 years of service with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

HEAD COACH | FOURTH SEASON
Lisac
MIHA
Miha Lisac (MEE-ha LEE-sots) enters his fifth season as head coach at West Virginia University. The 2009 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year, Lisac previously spent six seasons as head coach at Georgia State, where he built one of the top Division I programs in the nation. Lisac is a former student-athlete at Georgia State and served as the men’s assistant coach for two years. In 2007, Lisac was named head coach of the women’s tennis team at his alma mater. While at Georgia State, Lisac led the women’s tennis program to one conference title, back-toback CAA Championship final appearances and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals. His overall record as a head coach stands at 85111. The highlight of his tenure came in 2009, when he guided Georgia State to the first NCAA Championship appearance in school history and was named CAA Coach of the Year.
AT WEST VIRGINIA
WVU concluded the 2017 campaign with a 4-16 overall record, facing eight opponents that were ranked in the top 50 of the ITA/Oracle team rankings. Lisac led the Mountaineers to a win over Marshall, ending the Thundering Herd’s four-match winning streak in the series. The season also saw two Mountaineers, Christina Jordan and Habiba Shaker, head to the ITA All-American Championships for the first time under Lisac. In the spring, Shaker led the team in singles play with a record of 8-5 at the No. 1 position, while Paula Goetz paced the Mountaineers in doubles with a 9-7 record. West Virginia capped its 2016 season with a 6-15 overall record, competing against seven opponents ranked in the nation’s top 50 throughout the spring season. Lisac guided the Mountaineers to a No. 75 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking for what was believed to be the first time in program history. In that same week, West Virginia edged Cornell in a 4-3 battle for the first time since 1995 to tie the alltime series record at two apiece on Feb. 27, West Virginia concluded its 2015 campaign with a 9-13 overall record. The Mountaineers recorded nine straight wins for the first time since 2010 and earned the program’s 450th win at Toledo on Jan. 31.

TENNIS
In the spring season, WVU competed against nine ranked opponents, with its last five competitors ranked in the nation’s Top 40. Hailey Barrett earned her first victory over a ranked opponent in 2015, defeating Baylor’s then-ranked No. 82 Rachael Jakes-Baker in straight sets. Carolina Lewis was the first player since 2003 to tally 20 singles wins in a season, ending her freshman campaign with a 24-6 singles record. Habiba Shaker also held a teambest mark in doubles play (12-5) as she teamed up with Lyn Yuen Choo, Yvon Martinez, Barrett and Lewis throughout the spring season. In his first season at West Virginia, Lisac led the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole to a No. 9 ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the Atlantic Region entering the spring season. The WVU duo finished the fall season at 5-8 and battled their way to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia. Vivian Tsui tallied three straight wins at the USTA/ITA Regionals and made it further in the main singles draw bracket than any other Mountaineer, after surviving the qualifying bracket. In the spring season, freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole led the team with a combined 24 wins in singles and doubles. Mrgole posted a team-high 13 wins in the spring.
AT GEORGIA STATE
Lisac’s final season with Georgia State was a benchmark year for the program, as Abigail Tere-Apisah became the school’s first-ever tennis All-American, after advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship. TereApisah also took home CAA Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Performer honors. Whitney Byrd and Maryna Kozachenko became just the second pair in Lisac’s tenure to earn All-CAA First Team Doubles honors. The team advanced to its second straight CAA finals and earned its highest ITA Ranking in school history (No. 38 on Feb. 25, 2012). The team finished the season ranked in the ITA National Team Rankings for a third consecutive year, after defeating three nationally ranked opponents. In 2010-11, the Panthers achieved a No. 55 ranking to finish the season, earning a spot at the national indoor tournament in the spring. The tournament took the top 64 teams in the nation. GSU enjoyed an outstanding season, advancing to the CAA Championship final and earning a 15-4 overall record, including an 8-2 mark on the road. In Lisac’s third season as coach, the team reached the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament for the third straight year, while also producing two All-CAA athletes in Diana Nakic (first team singles, second team doubles) and Linda Hricistova (second team doubles). Nakic was named CAA
Co-Player of the Year, after recording a perfect 17-0 season (in singles and dual match play). She was selected for the NCAA Singles Championship. In 2009, Lisac presided over one of the most successful women’s tennis campaigns in Georgia State history, as the Panthers captured their first conference title to reach the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. GSU posted an 11-5 record and finished the year with a national ranking of No. 47. For his efforts, Lisac was honored as CAA Coach of the Year. In his coaching debut, Lisac led the Panthers to an 11-9 dual-match record and a berth in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament during the 2008 season. Three Panthers earned All-CAA honors; Dariana Kozmina, Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova.

2018 SEASON
Preview
With eight experienced returning letterwinners and two promising newcomers, the West Virginia University tennis team is poised to take the next step under fifth-year coach Miha Lisac. The 2018 squad, led by seniors Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez, has depth and experience in singles and doubles play that will transfer to competitive play on the court.
WVU will be tested however, as the 2017-18 schedule is yet another grueling slate. Facing a tough schedule is not new to the seasoned Mountaineers, as they play in the Big 12. one of the toughest conferences in all of college tennis. But Lisac and the rest of the support staff will have them prepared to compete.
Academic Excellence
The Mountaineers have a history of excellence in the classroom. They averaged a 3.49 GPA in 2016 and four student-athletes were named to an All-Academic Big 12 Team last year. Graduate Kaja Mrgole, former Mountaineers Habiba Shaker and Paula Goetz garnered first-team honors, while Lyn Yuen Choo earned secondteam accolades. Additionally, three current members of the team, Goetz, Martinez and Rosiello, were named ITA Scholar-Athletes and WVU was named an ITA All-Academic team for the fourth consecutive year.
Mountaineers Worldwide
Now in his fifth season at the helm of the Mountaineer tennis program, Lisac, a native of Velenje, Slovenia, has put together a roster comprised of student-athletes from around the world. The 10 Mountaineers hail from seven different countries, including four different continents. Three Mountaineers hail from South America: Yvon Martinez (Bogota, Colombia), Sofía Duran (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and freshman Giovanna Caputo (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil). Junior Paula Goetz is the lone European on the roster, hailing from Rottenburg Am Neckar, Germany. Lyn Yuen Choo had the farthest voyage to West Virginia University, traveling approximately 9,225 miles to Morgantown from Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia Newcomer Anne-Sophie Courteau is a Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada, native. She is the lone Canadian on the roster. In addition to international student-athletes, Lisac has also been able to bring in homegrown talent. Two Mountaineers (Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White) are natives of the Mountain State. Rosiello hails from Morgantown, while White is a Charleston native. Sophomore Christina Jordan is a product of Detroit, Michigan.
Returning Experience
With the leadership of two seniors and three juniors, the Mountaineers look to use their understanding of the game to generate wins in 2018. “The experience helps a lot. Anytime you have a young team, you know that you will be dealing with growing pains,” Lisac said. “Any time you overcome those and you start getting more experience on the roster and players who have been there and done that, you can definitely turn that into an advantage.”
44
TENNIS
The coaching staff will look to the two seniors, Choo and Martinez, to help the younger student-athletes get up to speed with everything that goes into being a WVU tennis player. Choo leads all returners with 50 career wins in singles play, while Martinez ranks second with 30 wins in singles action. “These are the players who we are looking to be an extension of coaches within the team. They should be the voice of reason. They should be the players that keep everyone on the right track as well. We are looking at Lyn Yuen (Choo) and Yvon (Martinez) to be that voice this year.”
Promising Newcomers
Freshmen Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau will make their Old Gold and Blue debuts this fall. The two already have a vast amount of experience playing in some of the best junior tournaments in the world. Caputo attended Centro Educacional Rogêdo and brings a wealth of playing experience on the ITF women’s circuit, including a finals appearance at the Bahia Juniors Cup in Salvador, Brazil. “Giovanna is a very exciting player,” Lisac said. “She comes in with a wealth of tournament experience. She has played all over the world. She has played in ITF (International Tennis Federation) tournaments; she’s played some women’s tournaments. I am excited to see how far she can go in college tennis”. “She is someone who is an extremely hard worker. She is a fighter and adds to our team environment with how she is as a person. She is a great addition to our team. I believe that she will have a very good college career.” Courteau joins the Mountaineers by way of Saint-Jean-surRichelieu, Quebec, Canada, and brings a wealth of experience from the ITF Juniors circuit. She brings experience in singles and doubles play, winning the Vancouver U18 ITF Juniors Championships in 2014 in doubles and appearing in the finals at the Jalisco Junior Cup in Zapopan, Mexico singles in 2015. “Just like Giovanna, Sophie comes from a tennis family and from a mom who played tennis at a very high level herself,” Lisac said. “She brings a wealth of junior experience as well and she is a very exciting player for us to add to the team. She has a great personality, great work ethic and really has her vision cut out as far as what she wants to accomplish in the future.”
Doubles Outlook
Doubles play promises to be one of the deepest areas of the roster for the Mountaineers. In 2017, Goetz led the Mountaineers with a record of 9-7 in doubles play, and the tandem of Goetz and Choo paced WVU with a 5-5 record in dual matches. Goetz also teamed up with Yvon Martinez to amass a 4-2 record. Choo has recorded a team-leading 38 wins in doubles action in her career, followed by Martinez with 27 wins.
Singles Outlook
With the loss of the student-athletes who filled the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, the Mountaineers need somebody to step in and fill the void. Choo is poised to step into a top position, as she finished second on the team with a 5-5 record in dual matches last season.
Martinez led West Virginia in singles play last fall, amassing five wins, before suffering a season-ending injury early in the spring season. The rest of the roster looks to build on the experiences that they have built through playing in one of the country’s premier conferences, the Big 12.
Yet Another Tough Schedule
Highlighted by the Martha Thorn Invitational in the fall and 12 home dual matches in the spring, West Virginia has built a schedule that will bring the excitement of the game to Morgantown. In the fall, WVU will play five tournaments, beginning with the Cleveland State Invitational on Oct. 6-8, in Cleveland, Ohio. The Mountaineers will face Cleveland State, Akron and Cincinnati. The following weekend, WVU will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regionals Oct. 13-16. West Virginia will play its lone home tournament on Oct. 20-22 with the Martha Thorn Invitational. The tournament will consist of players from James Madison, Miami (Ohio), Marshall and WVU. WVU will head to the Louisville Tennis Classic, Nov. 3-5 and will face Louisville, Ball State and Michigan State. The Mountaineers will wrap up tournament play at the FSU All-Conference Showdown in Tallahassee, Florida, Nov. 10-12. Along with Florida State, the FSU Invitational features Alabama, Auburn, UCF and Wisconsin. The Mountaineers will open the spring season with a threematch homestand, taking on James Madison on Feb. 3, VCU on Feb. 4 and George Washington on Feb. 10. On Feb. 16, WVU will travel to Akron, Ohio, to take on the Akron Zips. The next day, it will square off against East Tennessee State, in Akron.
After the two-match trip, the Mountaineers play host to 2017 Mid-American Conference Champion Buffalo on Feb. 24, Towson, on Feb. 25 and Old Dominion on March 4. West Virginia continues its non-conference slate in College Park, Maryland, against Maryland on March 11. WVU will then face the most grueling part of its schedule as Big 12 Conference play features six 2016 NCAA Tennis Tournament qualifiers. “There are no off weeks when we start against Big 12 competition,” Lisac said. “There is going to be great competition. Year in and year out, we are always challenged at the highest level.” The Mountaineers open conference play on the road at Oklahoma on March 16 and at Oklahoma State on March 18. West Virginia then returns to Morgantown for a two-match homestand beginning with a contest against non-conference opponent Duquesne on March 23, followed by Iowa State on March 24. The squad then travels to Huntington to take on Marshall on March 31. The Mountaineers bested the Thundering Herd in 2017, 4-3. WVU will welcome a pair of opponents from the Sunflower State, Kansas State and Kansas, on April 6 and April 8. The following week, the Mountaineers will swing through Texas to take on Baylor on April 13 and Texas on April 15. The Mountaineers will close the regular season at home beginning with 2017 Big 12 Champion Texas Tech on April 20. WVU will honor its seniors, Choo and Martinez, on April 22, as the Mountaineers square off against TCU. West Virginia will begin postseason play with the Big 12 Championship from April 26-29 in Austin, Texas.

JANE LITTLE MEMORIAL AWARD This award, a silver bowl donated by the West Virginia University Foundation, was given each year to a member of the women’s tennis team who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship and team spirit. Jane Little, a Charleston, West Virginia, native, was a member of the first women’s intercollegiate team to compete for WVU. Jane was not the best tennis player on the team, but she displayed the best sportsmanship and was the most dedicated. When she died in October, 1977, her teammates from the 1973-74 team established this award in her memory.

PRESIDENT
E. GORDON Gee, Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having served as president of some of the most prestigious public and private universities for more than three decades. When he returned to lead West Virginia University in 2014 as the institution’s 24th president, it was a homecoming of sorts. He was first named WVU president in 1981 at age 36 – at the time, among the youngest persons to ever serve as a university president. He led WVU until 1985 when he went on to presidencies at the University of Colorado (1985-90), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-07). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990-97 and again from 2007-13. On his return to the Morgantown campus, he said, “This is not a job to me; it is a calling.” His leadership style bears that out as he works tirelessly to advance the University’s land-grant mission and open doors to the American dream. In his latest address to the University community, he noted that for 150 years, the institution has been a polar star guiding West Virginians toward a brighter tomorrow. He said, “That is why, in this milestone year, we recommit our University to living the values that drive our work. Serving our students and our state is not just our duty — it is our passion.” Gee has built a special relationship with the students as well as the state’s citizens, making it a point to visit students where they live, learn and socialize -- and visiting all 55 West Virginia counties during his inaugural year -- and at least half in subsequent years. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the WVU College of Law, and, in 1981, was named WVU’s 19th president. Gee has served on several education-governance organizations and committees, including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia invited him to join its international advisory board. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. Gee is serving as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee for the 2017-18 year. Active in many national professional and service organizations, he is on the executive committee of the National 4-H Council Board of Trustees and serves on the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization, as well as on the board of trustees of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain, with which WVU has a long-standing academic partnership. A recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, he is an executive board member of Boy Scouts of America. He has also served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Limited Brands.

In 2011, Gee began serving as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-12, Governor John Kasich asked him to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In December 2012, he began serving on the Columbus Education Commission. Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of 11 books, including Law, Policy and Higher Education, published in 2012. He has also authored many papers and articles on law and education. In the summer of 2016, Gee announced his engagement to Laurie Erickson, leader of the Erickson Foundation. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health. In addition to that role, she is a practicing gynecologist and Gratis Faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Dr. Rebekah Gee is married to David Patrón and they have five children.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
SHANE Lyons
The 2017-18 season is Shane Lyons’ third full year as director of athletics at West Virginia University. If the next year is anything like the previous two, the Mountaineer athletics story will be full of positive results and continued success. In year two, Lyons put the finishing touches, to rave reviews, on $23 million in renovations to the WVU Coliseum, while $50 million in renovations and fan enhancements to Milan Puskar Stadium finished in August 2017. Lyons is always on the go, focusing his energy daily on the betterment of more than 500 student-athletes. His open lines of communications have made him a popular role model for WVU athletes, and his honest, fair and caring approach has energized an athletic department that turned in record results in 2017. Under Lyons’ leadership, 2017 was one of the best in WVU history. Six teams were nationally ranked, football turned in a 10-win season, women’s soccer played for the national championship and had the Hermann Trophy winner, men’s basketball reached the Sweet 16, women’s basketball won the Big 12 championship and rifle won its 19th national championship. Overall, the Mountaineers registered in 24 All-Americans, 104 all-conference performers, 20 academic award winners, 121 academic all-conference selections, 10 Olympians, one Olympic gold medalist and two silver medalists. Overseeing 18 varsity sports, a self-sustaining department budget of more than $90 million and more than 200 employees, Lyons’ tireless efforts in the coming year will be geared toward getting started on a new $45 million aquatic and track center in Morgantown, and a continued focus, on the growth and cultivation of the more than $23 million in fundraising efforts brought in by the Mountaineer Athletic Club. He will also direct phase two of the Coliseum renovations, which will bring the building up to ADA seating code, and for the first-time ever, Milan Puskar Stadium will have two video boards to improve in fan entertainment and information. While some outside observers may think that he is a behind-the-scenes guy, the people who count will tell you that Lyons is a results-oriented leader who has his finger on the pulse and is a positive influence on the entire department. His work with WVU President E. Gordon Gee’s senior leadership team, as well as the Big 12 Conference and other national committees has brought additional respect and positive exposure to his department and the University. He currently serves on the Big 12 Administration Committee, Finance and Budget Committee and the Game Management and Officiating Subcommittee. Also in 2017-18, Lyons will chair the overall athletic directors committee for the Big 12. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction of the Crimson Tide Athletic program. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, management of the day-to-day operations of the department and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the senior administrative team for ACC events,
including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units. Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of the 25 membership service representatives. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Lyons, the University’s 12th athletic director, and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have two children: Cameron and Brooke.
