MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

SHANE LYONS I cannot tell you how excited I am about what’s happening in our athletic department. We have hard working student-athletes who are extremely dedicated in the classroom and in competition. As I finish my third full year as your athletics director, I see how much we have grown and know that our future is even brighter. In 2017-18, we again exemplified the term studentathletes, and the successes that came on and off the field are something for all of us of which to be proud. In the coming pages you will read and learn all about our successes, but let me pull out just a few on the academic side that make me really proud. Our department-wide GPA for the year was 3.2. Women’s cross country’s 3.6 team GPA was the highest of any sport and all but four of our teams had cumulative grade point averages near a 3.0 or higher. Our overall department GPA has held steady above a 3.0 for 12 consecutive semesters. This year’s Academic Progress Report revealed four teams with perfect four-year APR scores (men’s basketball, rifle, golf and women’s tennis) and six with perfect scores for the 2016-17 academic year. As a department, we also had our highest overall score of 984, the third straight year we’ve accomplished this and once again it was above the national average. For the third straight year, men’s basketball had a perfect APR score, which is the fifth time in the last nine years under Coach Bob Huggins that has happened. Football continues to make tremendous strides since the APR was first instituted in 2004. Our score of 977 in 2016-17 was the highest ever and increased our multi-year APR tally by 10 points. Over a twoyear span, football’s yearly APR score has jumped 55 points and the team’s cumulative GPA for the spring semester was 2.96 - easily the best it’s been since I became director of athletics in 2015. A great deal has been written about what All-American Jevon Carter did on the basketball court as a two-time National Defensive Player of the Year, but he was also the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year and was the Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball. There were so many awards coming in for him that one could easily lose track, and we wish him nothing but the best as he embarks on his NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Rifle’s Elizabeth Gratz was recognized for the second straight year as the Elite 90 Award winner, which is the sport’s top individual academic honor, and she, Jevon, swimmers Amelie Currat and James Koval track and cross country standout Amy Cashin were conference Scholar-Athletes of the year. Overall, there were 547 student-athletes recognized on the Garrett Ford and Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Rolls with GPAs above a 3.0. Out of the classroom, the year saw us crown 29 All-Americans and 96 All-Conference performers. I certainly could boast more about our student-athletes and department, but I will let you see for yourself as I hope you enjoy the 2017-18 Annual Report. Facility-wise, we unveiled a much-needed and beautiful new training room and dining hall at the Puskar Center, and we continue to focus on the new Aquatic and Track Center coming to Mylan Park. Also, we just launched our $100 million Climbing Higher Facilities Master Plan and by this time next year, I hope to be able to bring you great news about those projects contained in the plan. I want our teams competing for conference and national championships with the goal of making the state of West Virginia proud of its Flagship University. When I talk about facilities, I talk in terms of needs and not wants. I talk in terms of taking what we have and making it better I want to thank Mountaineer Athletic Club donors for your generous support. None of our success could be obtained without the MAC and our fans. Thank you for your contributions, and we appreciate your understanding of how you can make a difference. In the coming year, it will be an honor for me to represent West Virginia University on the NCAA Division I Council, while also chairing the Division I Football Oversight Committee. It’s also an honor to be your athletic director, and I will continue to work to improve the student-athlete experience at WVU so that we can continue to make you proud to be a Mountaineer. SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM

Each year, at the conclusion of the spring semester, Director of Athletics Shane Lyons receives comprehensive academic progress reports from our student-athlete development staff and generally, the news I get is good. Well this year the news was not just good - it was great. The overall cumulative spring semester grade point average for our 18 athletic teams was 3.22 and for the entire year it was nearly 3.2. That’s higher than the general student-body grade point average. Women’s cross country’s 3.6 team GPA was the

highest of any sport and all but four of our teams had cumulative grade point averages near a 3.0 or higher. The overall department GPA has held steady above a 3.0 for 12 consecutive semesters. This year’s Academic Progress Report revealed four teams with perfect four-year APR scores (men’s basketball, rifle, golf and women’s tennis) and six with perfect scores for the 2016-17 academic year. We also had our highest overall score of 984, the third straight year we’ve accomplished this and once again above the national average.

Specifically, for the third straight year men’s basketball had a perfect APR score, which is the fifth time in the last nine years under coach Bob Huggins that has happened. Football continues to make tremendous strides since the APR was first instituted in 2004. Our score of 977 in 2016-17 was the highest ever and increased our multi-year APR tally by 10 points. Over a two-year span, football’s yearly APR score has jumped 55 points and the team’s cumulative GPA for the spring semester was 2.96.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS By the time the summer semester concludes in August, another 85 studentathletes will have West Virginia University diplomas, including Bruce Irvin, who recently completed work on his sociology degree as part of our post-eligibility scholarship program. A great deal has been written about what All-American Jevon Carter did on the basketball court, but did you realize that he was the CoSIDA’s Academic All-American of the Year and was also Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball? Did you know that seven Mountaineer women’s soccer players earned 4.0 GPAs for the spring semester, or that women’s basketball had six players listed on the Big 12’s two all-academic teams this past year? Did you know more than 500 athletes were recognized on the Garrett Ford and Big

12 commissioner’s honor rolls with GPAs above a 3.0? Or that cross country and track’s Amy Cashin earned a spot on the Google Cloud Academic All-America Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)? Or that rifle’s Elizabeth Gratz was recognized for the second straight year as the Elite 90 Award winner, which is the sport’s top individual academic honor? Or that swimming and diving’s Amelie Currat and James Koval were named Big 12 Scholar Athletes of the Year? Those are just a few of the success stories, and they speak to the high caliber of student-athletes our coaches are recruiting to West Virginia University; they speak to the

significant investment we continue to make in our student-athlete development program and they also speak to the outstanding academic support staff we have in place right now at WVU. All of these things have fostered a culture of academic success of which all West Virginians can be proud. We want to win championships and compete at the highest level - that will always be high on our list of objectives, but along the way, let’s not forget that we are also developing tomorrow’s doctors, physical therapists, engineers, scientists, financial advisors, coaches, educators, attorneys … you name it.

FACILITIES UPDATE

One of the most crucial needs for WVU Intercollegiate Athletics is the renovation and construction of first-class athletic facilities. In that regard, 2017-18 was a busy year on the construction front for the Department. Renovations to the west side of Milan Puskar Stadium were completed in time for the start of the 2017 season and included widening of the concourses, improved entrance gates and a significant increase in the number of restrooms and concession stands. Also, a Daktronics 13HD high-definition video board that is 37.2 feet high and 97.2 feet long was installed in the north end of the stadium above Touchdown Terrace. Out at Mylan Park, work continues on the aquatic center that will be the new home of the Mountaineer track and field, cross country and swimming and diving programs. The track and field complex is set to open this fall with the aquatic area planned for a spring of 2019 opening.

The track-and-field complex will have an eightlane competition track with state of the art running surface; areas for long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, hammer throw, discus throw, javelin throw, running & hurdling; and a scenic crosscountry trail. In addition, there will be a walking track available to the community. There will be seating for more than 1,000 spectators along with a ticket booth, press box, restroom and concessions facilities. The 90,050-square-foot aquatic center will have a competition 50-meter, eight-lane pool, and a separate competition diving pool with 1- and 3-meter springboards and 1-, 3-, 5-, 7.5- and 10-meter diving platforms. There will be seating for more than 1,200 spectators. Back at the Puskar Center, work recently wrapped up on a $4.675 million, 8,600-square feet renovation to the athletic training room, and renovations to the training table area.

Looking ahead, the Department recently launched a $100 million Climbing Higher campaign with a proposed $55 million in improvements to the Puskar Center, $35 million in upgrades to the Coliseum Complex and $5 million each toward renovations at Cary Gym and the construction of a golf practice facility, further illustrating that the road to success is always under construction.

West Virginia went 5-3 against top-25 teams in 2018, including a series win at home over No. 19 Texas

Kyle GRAY was named to the ABCA All-America Third Team, becoming the 18th All-American in program history, as WVU has earned at least one All-America honor in each of the last four years

39th time in program history, the 34th time in NCAA competition and placed sixth at the NCAA University Park Regional Championships with a 194.4 score.

Finished fourth at the Big 12 Gymnastics Championship with a 195.625 score.

Nationally ranked four times this season. The

Mountaineers sat at No. 16 in the first Road to Nationals Rankings of the year, the team’s highest regular-season ranking since also sitting at No. 16 in the GymInfo Poll on Feb. 25, 2013. The vault lineup was nationally ranked No. 17 at the end of the season. The unit was featured in the national rankings six times and ranked within the top 20 the last five weeks of the season.

Junior KIRAH KOSHINSKI was nationally ranked on

two events at season’s end, sitting at No. 10 on vault (9.91 RQS) and No. 33 on floor exercise (9.9 RQS).

KOSHINSKI was named to the NACGC/W Regular Season

All-America Vault Second Team for the third straight season. She is only the second Mountaineer to earn at least one All-America honor three consecutive seasons.

Scored five top-50 scores this year, including a seasonhigh 196.8 at Towson’s five-team meet on March 18. The score was the Mountaineers’ third straight road score of 196.0 or better, and this year’s squad became the first team in program history to earn 196.0 or better in at least three road meets in one season. The score also ranks No. 9 in program history, and it was WVU’s best road score since the 2004 season.

Hit 24-of-24 routines four times this season and did

not count a fall until the final meet of the year. Prior to the regional championships, WVU had missed only 10 routines all season (278-of-288).

Ten of the 14 gymnasts who saw competitive time this

year reached the podium. Senior Zaakira MUHAMMAD finished with a team-best 18 podium finishes, and KOSHINSKI earned a team-best 11 event wins.

A conference- and program-best 10 Mountaineers

earned a spot on the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics team, including eight first-team honors. Four of the first-team honors were earned with 4.0 GPAs; no other conference team had more than one 4.0 GPA. WVU’s previous high was seven honors in one season.

American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships title at the Bill McKENZIE Rifle Range Feb. 24-25 with a 4699 aggregate score. The title was the team’s conference-best 13th, and WVU swept the smallbore and air rifle team titles for the ninth time since 1998.

Junior Ginny THRASHER pushed her career GARC

title count to four with a sweep of the individual championships, winning smallbore (454.8 final) and air rifle (250.7 final).

Elizabeth GRATZ was named the GARC Outstanding Senior and GARC Scholar-Athlete, an honor she earned each of her four seasons as a Mountaineer.

For the fifth straight season and the 11th time in

program history, WVU earned the GARC regularseason title with a 9-0 mark against conference foes.

Prior to the NCAA Championships, senior Elizabeth

GRATZ was awarded the Elite 90 Award for NCAA Division I Rifle for the second straight year. Showing a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) in marketing, GRATZ is the first WVU student-athlete to earn two career honors.

The program unveiled the Bill McKenzie Mobile

Rifle Range in February. The Mountaineers’ new competition home provides WVU with the opportunity to setup a fully functioning rifle range, featuring 20 firing points, in multiple arenas, including the WVU Coliseum and the WVU Shell Building. More than twice the size of the WVU Rifle Range, the mobile range also allows a larger number of spectators to cheer for the Mountaineers when they compete in Morgantown.

MAC REPORT The Mountaineer Athletic Club (MAC) is the fundraising arm for the West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics pays 100% of the scholarships awarded to over 475 student-athletes in 18 varsity sports from generous contributions made by 6,500+ MAC Members. Those individual and corporate contributions help Advance Scholarship and Build Champions. The cost of competing at the highest level and providing a first-class education for outstanding student-athletes continues to climb. The MAC must grow its membership and level of support in order to keep WVU as one of the nation’s premier athletic programs.

JULY 1, 2017 – JUNE 30, 2018 Athletics is a window through which the University is often viewed , with its accomplishments serving as a tremendous recruiting tool and a catalyst for philanthropy to all areas of WVU. Essential private support enables the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to recruit and train elite student-athletes in firstclass facilities, fund scholarships and compete on a level playing field with peer institutions. Financial stability in athletics ultimately breeds success, and success breeds pride among WVU’s many alumni and friends.
