WVU DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS MISSION The mission of the West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to provide the means to empower student-athletes to develop as leaders and achieve their full potential academically, athletically and personally. As an integral part of WVU, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is committed to supporting the broader mission of the University through the integration of athletics in the academic community.

MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

I cannot tell you enough how proud I am of our athletic and academic accomplishments in 2016-17. Our student-athletes excelled in competition and in the classroom in what will be one of the most successful years ever for our department.

We truly exemplified the term student-athletes, and the successes that came on and off the field are something for all of us of which to be proud.

This year defined what I want our department to strive for every year, and I know we can be even better.

In the coming pages you will read and learn all about our successes, but I certainly do not mind pulling out for you a few highlights about which I can brag.

Our department-wide GPA for the year was 3.15 with 14 of our 18 varsity teams compiling better than a 3.0 cumulative average. My congratulations go out to the rifle team with a department high 3.58 GPA, with a special shout out to three student-athletes, Amelie Currat (swimming), Nathan Adrian (men’s basketball) and Jillian Forsey (cross country) for being named Big 12 Scholar-Athletes for their respective sports – what a great honor for them.

The overall department APR score was 982, which was above the national average and our highest ever as 10 teams achieved a perfect score. Overall, we produced 34 Academic All-Americans, 123 Academic All-Conference selections and 14 academic award winners while 517 student-athletes were named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

And, how about this point of pride - among Power 5 schools, West Virginia has the fourth-most Academic All-Americans since 2010.

In competition, the accolades are just as good. Let’s start in the fall, where women’s soccer played for the national championship and one of our star players, Kadeisha Buchanan, won the Hermann Trophy, which is the Heisman Trophy of soccer. She was also a finalist for an ESPY and the Honda Cup, which goes to the collegiate female athlete-of-the-year.

Rifle’s Ginny Thrasher dazzled and won the hearts of our country with the first U.S. Gold Medal of the Rio games and football recorded 10 wins for the first time since 2011. Winter produced another Sweet 16 appearance for men’s basketball, a fifth straight national championship for rifle and 19th overall in the program’s history, while women’s basketball won the Big 12 tournament championship. And who could forget the day we celebrated Coach Huggins’ historic 800th career win. Thankfully, we didn’t get a lot of snow in Morgantown during the winter but we sure did accumulate some big wins.

Spring was just as successful with baseball ending a 21-year drought and playing in the NCAA tournament. We were one of three departments nationally to have football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball ranked in the Top 25. Overall, six teams found themselves ranked in the Top 25 during the course of the season.

As far as facilities go, the East concourse of the stadium opened to much fan appreciation and the West concourse is on target for completion this fall. Rave reviews came pouring in about the renovations to the 47-year old WVU Coliseum. More restrooms, concessions and room to move really made a positive difference for our fans in the building.

I certainly could boast about our student-athletes and department for many more paragraphs, but I will let you see for yourself as I hope you enjoy the 2016-17 Annual Report. I cannot highlight all our athletes or teams in this short space, but I can tell you that in competition, we produced 29 All-Americans, 113 All-Conference performers, four national award winners, 10 regional award winners and five major coaching awards As I told you last year, my vision for the future holds even better facilities for our student-athletes and fans, and a lot more successful seasons in the classroom and in competition. I want our teams competing for conference and national championships with the goal of making the state of West Virginia proud of its Flagship University.

Please allow me to take this time to thank you for your generous support. None of our success could be obtained without the Mountaineer Athletic Club and our fans. Thank you for your contributions, and we appreciate your understanding of how they directly affect our studentathletes and the success of your favorite teams.

I am starting my third full year as your athletic director and it will be an honor to represent West Virginia as the chair of the Big 12 Athletic Director’s Council. My agenda as chair will be to continue to work to make our department and conference even stronger. I look forward to being your athletic director for many more successful years to come, and we will continue to uphold the values and mission of this great state’s land-grant institution.

FacilitiesImprovements

• One of the most crucial needs for WVU Intercollegiate Athletics is the renovation and construction of first-class athletic facilities. For recruiting

purposes it is essential that our facilities exceed the expectations of prospective student-athletes and compare favorably to other schools in the BIG 12 and the nation. As always, maintaining facilities and strategically planning for the future is an ongoing process.

• In that regard, 2016-17 was a busy year on the construction front. Renovations to 36-year-old Milan Puskar Stadium and 46-year-old WVU

Coliseum were part of a $100-million-plus, department-wide facility initiative announced in 2014 to modernize those facilities and enhance the game-day experience for Mountaineer fans. Funding for those projects comes from three primary sources: bonding, private fundraising and monies from WVU’s multimedia rights contract with IMG.

• The stadium project included the widening of concourses on the

east and west sides, improvement of entrance gates at those locations and a significant increases in the number of restrooms and concession stands.

• In addition to those improvements, ADA seating is available in the

WVU student section, and field boxes on both sides are adorned with televisions, padded seats and heaters. Graphics inside and outside the stadium highlight the Mountaineer football program as well Mountaineer greats. A Legends Park, recognizing the members of the Mountaineer Legends Society, was also added outside the north gate.

• Work on the east and north sides the stadium was completed in time to kick off the 2016 season, and work on the west side is slated for completion for the 2017 season.

• Additionally, fans will have another video board at their disposal as a new, high-definition video board will be installed in the north end zone above Touchdown Terrace in time for the start of the 2017 season as well.

• The Daktronics 13HD video board will work in conjunction with the current Panasonic south end zone video board (installed in 2008) and is

37.2 feet high by 97.2 feet long. The square footage dwarfs the current board, which is 23.6 feet high by 85 feet long, and it will offer brighter and clearer high definition images to punch through direct sunlight and other outdoor elements to provide a crisp image with deep contrast.

upgrades were completed. Crews worked to modernize the building’s infrastructure, allowing for the more than doubling of restrooms, the near doubling of points of sale for concessions, the widening of the concourse for ingress and egress, exterior access to the Mountaineer Ticket Office and Team Store, new concession options such as a Mountaineer Café, Country Roads Pit Stop, Almost Heaven Bistro and Wild & Wonderful Canteen and improved graphics and seating section numbering.

• No. 22/20-ranked West Virginia (24-11, 8-10 Big 12) completed the 2016-17 season by winning the 2017 Big 12 Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 12th time in program history.

• West Virginia won its first Big 12 Championship title since joining

the league and its second conference tournament title in program history. The sixth-seeded Mountaineers toppled No. 3-seed Oklahoma (82-58) in the quarterfinal, No. 2-seed Texas (62-59) in the semifinal and No. 1-seed Baylor (77-66) in the final. The Sooners were ranked No. 19, Texas No. 12/14 and Baylor No. 2 - marking the first time WVU knocked off three consecutive ranked opponents in three days.

• The Mountaineers finished ranked in the AP (22) and WBCA

Coaches Poll (20) for the sixth time in program history and for the first time in back-to-back seasons.

• West Virginia won five top-25 games this season over ranked

All-America Honorable Mention by the Associated Press and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

• Coach Mike CAREY owns a 346-182 (.655) record at West

Virginia in 16 seasons as head coach and a 634-284 (.691) career record in 29 seasons. West Virginia has produced 11 20-win seasons under Carey and has reached 20-win seasons for a schoolrecord fourth consecutive season.

• MARTIN became the third-quickest Mountaineer and the 34th

overall to reach the 1,000-point milestone with her 26 points in the win over Elon (March 17). She was the first WVU player since Meg Bulger in 2005 to score 20 or more points in four consecutive games (March 4-March 19). She joined Bria HOLMES, as the only WVU sophomores to garner unanimous All-Big 12 First Team honors. She ranked second in the Big 12 Conference with 18.6 points per game.

Martin is the 16th Mountaineer and Teana Muldrow is the 17th to score 500 or more points in a season. Martin’s 277 field goals were third-most for a sophomore and eighth-best in WVU history.

• Chania RAY’S 206 assists are second all-time by a

Mountaineer junior and third all-time. Ray’s 84.3 free throw percentage (70-of-83) set the WVU junior single-season school record and is seventh-best all-time in a season.

• Qualified for the regional championships for the 38th time in program history, the 33rd time in NCAA competition and placed third at the NCAA Morgantown Regional Championships on April 1 with a program regional record score of 196.325.

• Seeded fifth, the regional finish was the team’s top placement since

also finishing third at the 2007 NCAA Regional Championships. Prior to this season, WVU had not finished higher than fifth since finishing fourth in 2010.

• At regionals, WVU also set a program regional record on bars

(49.35) and matched the program regional record on floor (49.225).

Junior Zaakira MUHAMMAD finished fourth in the all-around with a 39.325 score and qualified in the event for the 2017 NCAA National Championships with the top mark of any individual qualifier.

Additionally, sophomore Kirah KOSHINSKI placed second outright on floor with a 9.925 mark, while Muhammad tied for third with a 9.9. On bars, senior Alexa GOLDBERG finished second with a 9.925, a program regional-record score, and sophomore Tiara WRIGHT tied for third with a 9.9.

• WVU’s first NCAA National Championships qualifier since 2014,

Zaakira MUHAMMAD was named to the NACGC/W AllAmerica Floor Exercise Second Team with an eighth-place finish in the second semifinal session at the 2017 NCAA National Championships. She was the first Mountaineer gymnast to earn All-America honors at the national championships since Janae Cox did so in 2007.

• Kirah KOSHINSKI was named to the NACGC/W Regular

Season All-America Vault Second Team for the second straight season. She was the first WVU gymnast to score an All-America honor in multiple years since Kristin Quackenbush won six awards from 1994-96. KOSHINSKI and MUHAMMAD are the first Mountaineer duo to earn All-America honors in one season since 1994 and only the second pair in program history.

13-10, 3-3 BIG 12 • The Mountaineers finished the year ranked No. 20 nationally, the

team’s top position since earning the No. 21 ranking in the final GymInfo Poll of the 2012 season. It was the team’s top seasonending ranking since being ranked No. 18 in 2007. WVU also finished the year ranked No. 18 nationally on vault and No. 24 on floor.

• WVU was nationally ranked every week this season but three,

the best total under sixth-year coach Jason BUTTS. The Mountaineered entered the regional championships ranked No. 23, marking the first time since 2009 WVU was ranked at the postseason championship.

• The Mountaineers were ranked No. 3 in the Big 12 Conference

each week but one. WVU placed third at the conference championship with a 195.575 score. Kirah KOSHINSKI (vault) and Zaakira MUHAMMAD (floor) were named to the All-Big 12 Championship Team.

• WVU scored seven top-50 scores this year, including a season-high 196.325 at the 2017 NCAA Morgantown Regional Championships.

The Mountaineers scored 195.7 or better in six of their last seven meets, including a season-best road score of 196.1 at No. 3 Florida on March 10.

• Twelve of the 13 gymnasts who saw competitive time this

year reached the podium. Kirah KOSHINSKI and Zaakira MUHAMMAD finished with a team-best 23 podium finishes each, and KOSHINSKI paced the team with 12 event wins.

NCAA title with a 4723 showing at the 2017 NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, March 10-11. The five-peat is the third in the sport since 1980.

• The Mountaineers’ aggregate score was

a championship record. WVU also won the NCAA air rifle title and smallbore titles, marking the second straight season and the third time in four years the Mountaineers have swept the team discipline titles.

BABIC won the smallbore and air rifle NCAA titles, respectively. WVU has swept the NCAA individual titles five times since 1992, and this season marked the first time since 1993 that two different Mountaineer shooters won individual titles in the same season. Twenty different WVU shooters have claimed 27 National Championships since 1961.

• PHILLIPS also finished second in air rifle at the NCAA Championships. For her efforts, she was named the NCAA Championships’ Top Performer Award.

• WVU claimed its fourth straight GARC

regular-season title with an 8-0 mark against conference foes, also the team’s fourth consecutive undefeated conference season.

• In August, Ginny THRASHER won the

first Gold medal of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games with a victory in the women’s 10m air rifle. She was the thirdyoungest USA women’s shooting medalist and the third USA shooter to win the women’s 10m air rifle event.

Elizabeth GRATZ was awarded the Elite 90 Award for NCAA Division I Rifle.

first time in program history, where they fell, 3-1, to USC in the final on Dec. 4, at Avaya Stadium, in San Jose, California.

• Finished the 2016 season with a nationbest and program-record 23 wins and ranked No. 2 nationally with a .889 win percentage.

• Earned the No. 1 ranking in the National

Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I Poll on Oct. 11. It was the team’s first-ever No. 1 ranking in the national poll, and WVU was the first Big 12 Conference program to earn the top ranking. The Mountaineers spent eight weeks ranked No. 1 nationally and earned the 2016 NCAA Tournament as the nation’s top team. WVU finished the year ranked No. 2.

• Claimed its fifth straight Big 12 regular-

season title with a 3-0 win at TCU on Oct. 21. The Mountaineers have won the title each season since joining the Big 12 in 2012, and the team is the first program in conference history to win five straight outright championships. WVU is 35-1-3 all-time in Big 12 play and unbeaten at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

• Swept the conference titles for the third

time in five years, as they claimed their third Big 12 Soccer Championship crown in four seasons with a come-from-behind,

• Senior defender Kadeisha BUCHANAN won the 2016 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy, college soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy. She was the first Mountaineer to claim the storied award and the first defender to do so since 2003.

Buchanan also was named the espnW and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Year and claimed the Honda Sport Award winner for soccer.

• For the first time in program history,

three Mountaineers garnered NSCAA All-America honors, with seniors Kadeisha BUCHANAN and Ashley LAWRENCE landing on the first team, and junior Michaela ABAM scoring a second team nod. Buchanan’s honor was the fourth of her career, and she is the first Mountaineer in program history to earn All-America status in each season at WVU. She also was named to the Senior CLASS All-America First Team, while Lawrence was named to the Senior CLASS AllAmerica Second Team.

• For the fourth straight season, WVU

earned more than half of the Big 12 Conference year honors. Coach Nikki IZZO-BROWN was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year for a conference-record fifth time, while senior defender Kadeisha

BUCHANAN captured the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award for the fourth straight season. Buchanan was the second athlete in Big 12 history in any sport to earn an unshared major award four straight season. Additionally, junior forward Michaela ABAM was named the co-Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. WVU also collected seven All-Big 12 honors.

• WVU was the first team in Big 12

Conference history to pitch a season shutout in league play. The Mountaineers held each Big 12 team but one to two shots or less on-goal en route to eight cleansheet victories. Since 2014, WVU is 210-2 against Big 12 foes in regular-season games, the longest unbeaten streak in conference history.

• In just 21 seasons, the Mountaineers have

earned 309 wins for an average of 15 victories per season. WVU earned program win No. 300 with a 3-0 victory at TCU on Oct. 21. All program wins have come under coach Nikki IZZO-BROWN, who claimed her 300th career victory with a 2-0 win against Buffalo on Aug. 21, at the Penn State Invitational.

• WVU has defeated at least one top-10

The Mountaineer Athletic Club (MAC) is the fundraising arm for the West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics pays 100% of the scholarships awarded to over 475 student-athletes in 18 varsity sports from generous contributions made by 6,500+ MAC Members. Those individual and corporate contributions help Advance Scholarship and Build Champions.

The cost of competing at the highest level and providing a first-class education for outstanding student-athletes continues to climb. The MAC must grow its membership and level of support in order to keep WVU as one of the nation’s premier athletic programs.

Athletics is a window through which the University is often viewed , with its accomplishments serving as a tremendous recruiting tool and a catalyst for philanthropy to all areas of WVU. Essential private support enables the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to recruit and train elite student-athletes in first-class facilities, fund scholarships and compete on a level playing field with peer institutions. Financial stability in athletics ultimately breeds success, and success breeds pride among WVU’s many alumni and friends.
