WVSU FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT FY 2019

A Message from

THE PRESIDENT The opportunity to help West Virginia State University (WVSU) realize its amazing potential and transform itself into the great university that a great community like the Kanawha Valley deserves has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my higher education career. I glance back over our accomplishments with tremendous pride and affection. Over the past three and a half years, we have significantly moved our university forward and the conclusion of the 2019 academic year marked another exceptional year in the storied history of West Virginia State University. With unwavering support from our Board of Governors, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends, WVSU is stronger than ever. Last year, our generous donors helped us establish our 195th scholarship for students attending WVSU awarding $619,316.00 to 265 students. Our commitment to student success and transforming lives will profoundly impact generations to come. WVSU is launching several new majors, initiatives and innovative centers to improve teaching, enhance learning, expand research, and foster our service mission. The University’s research, land-grant outreach, and business activity has an economic impact on the state now estimated at $254 million. The most of any regional university in West Virginia. The physical footprint of our University has also transformed over the past three and a half years. In fact, since taking office as President, we have completed construction, renovations, and upgrades to seven facilities on campus to enhance our academic and student-centered mission. We reached these significant goals because, collectively our Board of Governors, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends worked together to help WVSU expand the boundaries of what is possible. Continuing the momentum, there is much more to be done. As you will see in the pages that follow, our students, faculty, and staff are addressing the opioid crisis, receiving national awards, winning athletic championships, appointed to federal advisory councils and solving grand challenges for our state, nation, and the world. As we continue our important work, I remain deeply appreciative to the entire WVSU family for its support and dedication to advancing the University we love so dear. Together we are poised and committed to accomplishing so much more. Go STATE! Best regards,

Anthony L. Jenkins, Ph.D. President

WVSU Healthy Grandfamilies Program Expanding Statewide The WVSU Healthy Grandfamilies program is expanding to all 55 counties in West Virginia thanks to a $300,000 funding line from the West Virginia Legislature. Funding will allow the program to launch sessions throughout the state, expand personnel, and establish a Center of Excellence for grandparents raising their grandchildren. With West Virginia currently tied for second in the nation in the percentage of grandchildren being raised by grandparents, the program has served hundreds of grandparent-led families throughout the Greater Kanawha Valley region since the program launched.

University-led Nutrition Program Celebrates 50 Years of Changing Lives A nationwide community nutrition education program that helps limitedresource families improve nutritional well-being is celebrating 50 years in 2019. The USDA Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), offered through WVSU Extension Service, has helped thousands of West Virginians improve their nutrition practices. National studies have shown EFNEP participation results in a reduction in government costs spent on health care, increases in fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity, as well as reductions in food storage and food preparation practices that cause foodborne illness.

The Center for Advancing Opportunity Awards $440,000 Grant to Study Recidivism Rates The Center for Advancing Opportunity has awarded WVSU a grant of $440,000 to explore the relationship between current evidence-based programs that have been implemented in West Virginia correctional institutions for substance abuse and recidivism rates. The goal of the Viable Impact on Recidivism Assessing Levels of Evidence Based Practices-West Virginia (VIRALEWV) is to build an evidence-based, substance abuse treatment model for reducing recidivism rates in West Virginia. VIRALE-WV at WVSU will collaborate with criminal justice agencies and community partners to establish best quality practices of the current substance abuse evidence-based programs.

Athletics Awarded NCAA CHOICES Grant for Alcohol Awareness Program WVSU Athletics has been awarded a NCAA CHOICES grant that will provide funding over the next three years to implement a campus-wide alcohol awareness program designed to educate students about the harmful effects of alcohol abuse and encourage them to make smart choices. The main component of the program is the #WVSUStepsUp! campaign which encourages students to not only practice safe social behaviors themselves, but intervene in situations where others are partaking in harmful drinking habits.

University Plans to Launch Bachelor of Science in Nursing Committed to meeting the needs of state citizens,WVSU is launching a nursing program. The nursing program will be led by Dr. Mary Ellen Sizemore, director of nursing. The University plans to launch a new Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in Spring 2019. The degree program has been approved by the WVSU Board of Governors, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the Higher Learning Commission. Final approval is now needed by the West Virginia Board of Nursing, which is slated to meet in October 2019.

Innovation

WVSU Opens Integrated Research & Extension Building The University opened the new Integrated Research and Extension Building (IREB) in the spring of 2019. The payload flew to an altitude of 96 miles during its flight. It descended by parachute and landed in the Atlantic Ocean, where it was recovered for the data to be analyzed. Sponsored by the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, NASA’s RockSat-X program introduces students to building experiments for space flight and requires them to expand their skills to develop and build more complex projects as they progress through the program. Participating WVSU students included Jonathan Musselwhite, Taylor Jones-Martin, Shaka Wilkerson, Oddai Gharib and Elizabeth Carrier.
