OUR MISSION The mission of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) is to educate students from diverse backgrounds as lifelong learners in osteopathic medicine and complementary health related programs; to support and develop graduate medical education training; to advance scientific knowledge through academic, clinical and basic science research; and to promote patient-centered, evidence based medicine. WVSOM is dedicated to serve, first and foremost, the state of West Virginia and the health care needs of its residents, emphasizing primary care in rural areas.

Why do you contribute such a significant amount of time to the WVSOM community?

I believe in the mission of WVSOM. I believe that our country is hungry for physicians trained in osteopathic medicine. I believe that health care in our nation requires a cohort of physicians who not only practice patient-centered care but also see the value in serving others. I have witnessed the rigorous academic curriculum, the care of the faculty and the excellence of the facilities. This is an organization that warrants my support.

What do you see on the horizon for WVSOM graduates and students?

The truth of the matter is that there is a growing void in the national and global arena that must be filled by physicians fueled by a passion to serve the whole person. Our graduates are a perfect fit for multiple platforms of care: primary care, rural care, specialized medicine and even global health care policy. Although it may sound cliché, the sky is the limit for physicians trained by WVSOM.

Where do you see WVSOM in five years?

The future is bright for the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Adelman and his team have accomplished so much in regard to our infrastructure. The expanded CEC and the new student center will greatly improve the student and faculty experience. Our dynamic faculty are pivitol to the success of the institution and they embrace their role. We have experienced growing recognition and support for WVSOM’s role in the future of health care. I am enthusiastic to see all that we accomplish and I invite you to get involved.

What are you most passionate about at WVSOM? The people! I wish that everyone reading this could join me for a day to walk our campus. You’d see our amazing faculty presenting lectures and interacting with our students. You’d connect with our staff, who are competent and dedicated in their work, and you’d meet an incredible student body, who are excited to learn and happy to be at WVSOM. From watching them interact for the first time with our state-of-the art simulators in our Clinical Evaluation Center, to seeing their anticipation as they receive their Statewide Campus rotation assignments for their third and fourth years, and finally, shaking their hand as our graduates cross the stage, we are all about our students!

I am honored to be able to witness all of this, knowing that students’ education at WVSOM has prepared them well for their next step as a physician.

Why should the greater community support the work of WVSOM? WVSOM is one of the top ranked medical schools in the country when it comes to primary care and rural medicine. During the past five years, we have expanded our faculty and facilities while simultaneously increasing applicants and matriculants. In addition, we are graduating more Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine than ever before, and we are receiving more recognition for our outreach initiatives and research at the state and national level. WVSOM and its graduates care about our communities and continuously strive to provide quality health care and education to our patients.

Where do you see WVSOM in five years?

WVSOM is already a leader in important health care initiatives. For instance, our Center for Rural and Community Health developed a curriculum that trains Community Health Educators, who work with individuals and families to find resources for their health care needs. Our Healthy Children’s Initiative helps to educate elementary school children on healthy lifestyles and nutrition, and our Rural Health Initiative helps educate our medical students on the unique attributes of practicing medicine in rural America. During the next five years, we plan on expanding these programs as well as adding new initiatives to enhance the health care need of West Virginia and the country. Our future is bright and I am honored to be a part of the WVSOM community. It will be exciting to see our achievements over the next five years as we continue to stay on the “cutting edge” of health care and medical education.

ALL OF OUR PERSONNEL ARE KEY PERSONNEL

The fiscal year 2015 was a strong training year for WVSOM as we focused on training opportunities for all employees. The Office of Human Resources developed 25 training sessions based on employee interests, needs and institutional goals. February 2015 was Employee Appreciation Month and training topics included stress management, yoga, communication, mindfulness, Myers-Briggs, personal leadership and “Sharpen the Saw.” Our training blitz invigorated the employees and created an environment of support and mutual respect.

Faculty and staff continue to grow in alignment with WVSOM’s mission and vision. For the fourth consecutive year, we received recognition as a Great College to Work For in the U.S., according to a survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. WVSOM was also recognized on the chronicle’s honor roll as a college that received the most recognitions within their category. Most significant is that this independent survey of employees yielded greater than 60 percent participation, much higher than most other institutions with WVSOM earning high marks for its performance in seven workplace categories.

Each decision at WVSOM is mission driven. Along the way, there are milestones by which to check our progress. One benchmark is how we stand in national rankings in categories which reflect our vision for the school. There is much to be proud of at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

U.S.News and World Report and Academic Medicine continue to recognize WVSOM for achievements in the areas of rural health and primary care.

Our students are No. 1 in the nation for passing the COMLEX 2-PE exams that occur following the third year of classes. This extraordinary accomplishment demonstrates to our students, alumni and stakeholders that the WVSOM experience expertly prepares students to master the medical knowledge necessary to practice medicine. The strong academic foundation further gives students confidence in their knowledge and skills as they move forward in their journey.

While at the OMED Annual Conference, WVSOM students and alumni are regular recipients of the American Osteopathic Foundation awards which recognize the best and brightest in the osteopathic profession through scholarships, awards and grants.

WVSOM has been accredited by the Council on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for more than 40 years. During the 2014-15 academic year, WVSOM was also granted initial accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) on Oct. 30, 2014. Obtaining regional accreditation by HLC has been a major project for WVSOM, taking more than five years and including two evaluation site visits. The HLC is the largest of six regional institutional accreditors in the U.S. They are involved in accrediting institutions of higher learning in 19 states including all the universities and colleges in West Virginia.

OVERVIEW The WVSOM strategic plan is focused on the institution’s mission and addresses the following six areas: osteopathic medical education, facilities, technology, finances, outreach and reputation of the institution. The strategic plan affirms that education is the primary focus of the institution with the other areas supporting the educational mission.

Service to West Virginia and its citizens to address the health care needs of the state is another major focus of the institutional strategic plan. Finally, the research mission of the institution is embedded throughout the plan to enhance the educational and service goals.

Osteopathic Medical Education

Osteopathic medical education is the primary focus of WVSOM and comprises a continuum that includes the medical school program and postgraduate residency programs. Leadership will begin to explore the feasibility of adding additional programs that are complementary to its mission and the needs of West Virginia. WVSOM will continue to explore partnership opportunities with other organizations. Research is integrated into the educational mission of the institution with a focus on providing osteopathic medical students with research opportunities and addressing the health care needs of West Virginia. Recruitment of faculty, staff and students will be focused on meeting the mission of the institution.

Facilities

The institution will continue to implement aspects of the institutional facilities master plan. Existing buildings will be maintained and upgraded as needed. A review of facilities will be conducted to redefine usage as the Student Center is completed. Other areas of focus include evaluating storage needs, reviewing bike shelter options, expanding recycling and exploring purchasing additional facilities/property as needed.

Reputation

The institution will expand its state and national recognition by focusing on the institutional mission, expanding presence at the national level, maintaining regional and program accreditation standards, improving marketing and communication efforts, identifying opportunities to increase institution’s visibility, improving and expanding the WVSOM identity and branding campaigns and maintaining its osteopathic uniqueness.

Finances

The institution will continue to provide good stewardship of its financial resources and will explore ways to improve its financial outlook. Strategies include reaching out to legislators, exploring additional degree programs, marketing the Student Center convention hall and Clinical Evaluation Center services to outside entities, applying for grants, fundraising and identifying ways to minimize future expense increases. WVSOM will continue to monitor and update financial projections.

Outreach

The institution will maintain, expand and develop outreach programs at the community and state levels. Outreach will include the WVSOM Center for Rural and Community Health, Healthy Children’s Initiative, Rural Health Initiative, WVSOM Alumni Association, Statewide Campus, West Virginia Osteopathic Medical Association, Greenbrier Military School Alumni Association and Robert C. Byrd Clinic. WVSOM will continue to seek, expand and enhance opportunities to partner with organizations in the state to improve health care and education in West Virginia. Additional focus will be on legislative outreach and involvement with national organizations.

Technology

WVSOM will continue to monitor, maintain, identify and invest in technology improvements in the areas of communication, network and medical education. WVSOM will explore and implement emergent hardware and software innovations with a focus on security, education, assessment and simulation technologies. www.WVSOM.edu

WHERE LEARNING HAPPENS We cannot create excellence in the student experience without committing to exceptional facilities and technology. Our donors have supported the establishment of state-of-the-art environments to support student learning and ultimately the patient experience.

CEC

At the Clinical Evaluation Center, students confront and treat real world patient situations in a training environment. The human simulators appear lifelike in many ways. Technicians program a set of symptoms for the simulator to demonstrate as the student evaluates, diagnoses and suggests treatment, all while they are being filmed or a faculty member looks on.

Whether it’s learning to intubate a trauma patient, delivering a baby or distinguishing heart murmurs, the patient simulators provide valuable learning experiences during the first two years on campus. Students receive immediate feedback on whether treatment has been successful and gain confidence they can carry into real patient encounters. The CEC also houses standardized patient exam rooms where local community members are trained to present symptoms as students learn to take personal histories, develop communication skill and recognize key issues.

Anatomy lab

Students are assigned and learn from a specific cadaver, which they will dissect during their course of study, while plastinated organs provide enhanced examination of the human body. At the end of students’ first year, they will have an opportunity to express their appreciation to the families of those individuals who donated their final gift — the human gift — to advance the cause of science and further student medical education.

THE ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR STUDENTS The WVSOM medical education program fosters the development of caring and compassionate physicians. WVSOM is elevating community-based services to a more prominent position in our nation’s health care system. Our rigorous program produces physicians who are dedicated, disciplined and committed to mastering knowledge and embracing a compassionate bedside manner.

The student-centered class structure offers a 21st century, clinically integrated approach to medical education. Courses are presented in three major areas: biomedical sciences, clinical sciences and osteopathic manipulative medicine.

Skilled teaching

HANDS-ON LEARNING

FIRST AND SECOND YEARS – PATIENT PRESENTATION CURRICULUM (PPC)

WVSOM’s PPC uses the most common ways patients present to a physician to form the framework around which the curricular content is taught.

Throughout the first two years, the PPC uses small and large group activities such as flipped classrooms and team-based learning to supplement lectures and labs. The newly opened team-based learning facility and robotic patient simulator center complement the standardized patient labs and electronic medical record training already occurring in WVSOM’s Clinical Evaluation Center.

THIRD AND FOURTH YEAR – STATE WIDE CAMPUS (SWC)

In the 2014-15 academic year, third-year students were based at one of 19 base site hospitals in WVSOM’s Statewide Campus system where they fulfilled the

majority of their core clinical rotations which include family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, psychology, pediatrics and emergency medicine.

An additional 44 affiliated hospitals were used to supplement the rotations at the base site hospitals. The Statewide Campus system facilitates the standardization of education and provides WVSOM administration and staff in each of the six Statewide Campus regions.

Computerized case studies assist in the delivery of didactic materials. This past year, WVSOM has teamed with various professional schools in the state to put on interdisciplinary experiences throughout the Statewide Campus.

During the fourth year, students are required to complete rotations of eight weeks each in internal medicine, surgery and family medicine. Additionally, students must complete four weeks of pediatric and 10 weeks of electives. The fourth year may be completed at current Statewide Campus Site or another SWC site or at an approved site of their choosing.

OUR RESEARCH PROGRESS

WVSOM research programs span a broad scope of opportunities and interests. Our students are regularly identified at the top of their field nationally. The 2014-2015 year has provided access for greater development, deeper research and expanded participation.

Biomedical science research

The Biomedical Sciences department has 14 research faculty. Research programs examine human physiology such as cardiac (Hugh Clements-Jewery, Ph.D.), reproductive (Maureen Basha, Ph.D.), and endocrine functions (Carolyn Komar, Ph.D.). Microbiologist/ immunologist study hepatitis (David Manna, Ph.D.) and interleukins (Cory Robinson, Ph.D.). Biochemists work to define biomarkers for various diseases (Kristie Bridges, Ph.D.) or examine reperfusion injury (Brian Griffith, Ph.D.). Neuroscientists work to uncover the mysteries of muscular dystrophies (Predrag Krajacic, M.D.), glial cell function (Joyce Morris-Wiman, Ph.D.), or neuroprotection (Jacob Neumann, Ph.D.). Basic science research also includes study of the musculoskeletal system (Jandy Hanna, Ph.D., Rebecca Kelso, Ph.D., and Peter Ward, Ph.D.). All research faculty mentor students in research methodology.

Osteopathic clinical research

Deborah Schmidt, D.O., along with Carolyn Komar, Ph.D., are researching the impact of pelvic somatic dysfunction on female reproductive health. They are quantifying changes in venous return following Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) with lymphatic techniques. Third-year students Scott Brown, David Moccia, Josh Moore and Andrew Nakashi are assisting in this research project.

Other clinical research

Clinical faculty conduct research, participate in translational and clinical outcomes research and offer to mentor interested students and residents on their projects. A transitional project for special needs patients at the Robert C. Byrd Clinic, initiated by Jill Cochran, APRN, Ph.D., involves students and residents as part of the research team. The research team has presented

Conference and Exposition (OMED) that took place Oct. 25-29, 2014, in Seattle, WVSOM student Timothy Bikman, earned a second place ribbon in the Research Abstracts and Poster Session for research on “Experiential Learning: An Irreplaceable Tool in Osteopathic Student Education.”

John Ford, was also a research contributor, but did not attend the conference. The work was under the supervision of faculty mentor Deborah Schmidt, D.O., and staff member Lance Ridpath, M.S. Students typically have 5-7 minutes to present their poster and their findings in a poster presentation and future development of this project will include osteopathic manipulative treatment into the care plan of patients with special health care needs.

Dr. Cochran, in collaboration with Kristie Bridges, Ph.D., is in secondary data analysis in the area of pediatric obesity.

Additional projects being initiated will look at health disparities in the areas of neonatal abstinence, breast feeding rates, medical literacy and other population based problems. Drs. Cochran and Bridges work in collaboration with West Virginia University and the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (WVCTSI) to engage additional primary care clinics to develop a cohesive network of research partners in the area of pediatric obesity.

Research on health behaviors in Appalachia

The HIS and HER (Health Index Score and Heath Enhancement Response) campaign was a research program led by Wayne Miller, Ph.D., in connection to a health literacy campaign in southeast West Virginia. This research helped rural West Virginians assess themselves on 12 different chronic conditions and/or unhealthy behaviors. Research revealed that participants, engaged in unhealthy behaviors, believed they were actually in good health. As a result of this study, researchers were able to educate participants on what to do to improve their current health conditions and to correct unhealthy behaviors. www.WVSOM.edu

A few of the things that WVSOM students do ... build homes with Habitat for Humanity, operate fundraisers for the Family Refuge Center, collect coats for the United Way and provide local education for medical conditions including breast cancer, prostate cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Our goal is to develop leaders who will carry these experiences into their professional lives, deepening and nurturing connections that strengthen the fabric of our communities.

100 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THIS EVENT At the beginning of every school year, WVSOM students volunteer their time in a partnership for United Way’s annual Day of Caring.

It’s an opportunity for students to not only give back to local communities but also to meet and learn about their classmates.

This year, more than 100 first- and secondyear students helped with renovation and rejuvenation projects at shelters, schools, libraries and local parks.

Student organizer

Rachel Harris said that since WVSOM students represent the entire state of West Virginia as well as nearly every state in the country, the partnership is a chance for students to immediately become involved in the area.

“It is important for students to get out in the community and give back to the community that makes students feel so welcome. Lewisburg is such a friendly town and residents welcome new students with open arms. As a student from Michigan, I came down

here and immediately felt the southern hospitality,” Harris said. “Medical school is more than just studying and getting good grades.

As physicians we will be interacting with people on a daily basis and be role models in our community, so why not start that role now?”

The Greenbrier Episcopal School was one recipient of that generosity.

Gretchen Graves, site coordinator for GES, requested student volunteers to organize storage rooms and help build phase II of

its playground facility, which included creating a sandpit, installing a shade spot and making outdoor chalkboards.

“Last year, the students accomplished more work than we had planned. They painted six rooms and did all the outdoor work as well. The parents were amazed,” Graves said. “This year, I realized I needed to be organized and ready for them.”

A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON STUDENT ENGAGEMENT Interest in health education and health care in underserved, poverty stricken countries has increased in recent years.

Approximately 25 percent of U.S. medical students graduate with international medical experience.

In 2011 the AOA-BIOM reported that most medical students who have some international experience while in medical school had a tendency to become primary care physicians. The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has urged all West Virginia colleges and universities to have some kind of international exposure program in their curricular offerings.

WVSOM offers rotations to third and fourth year students. To date over 100 students have visited mostly underserved populations in Africa, India, Asia and Latin America. WVSOM students rotations included: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Cambodia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, the Republic of Georgia, and Zambia, to name only a few.

First and second-year students may take spring break medical delegation trips and during the summer break, all students may travel to other countries for outreach opportunities and medical education in areas such as infectious disease and third world clinical experience.

To date more than 100 students have benefited FROM AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

These local partner organizations received service and/or funds from WVSOM student initiatives to address critical needs.

CENTER FOR RURAL AND COMMUNITY HEALTH (CRCH) CRCH is closely tied to the WVSOM mission.

Programs contribute to improving health in rural communities, supporting clinical research in rural practices, developing resources and collaborations that support these efforts.

OUR OUTREACH

HEALTHY CHILDREN’S INITIATIVE WVSOM’s Healthy Children’s Initiative has seen great success during the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

The cornerstone of the initiative is Abracadabra, a children’s television series on WV PBS and its corresponding elementary school program. More than 50,000 viewers watch the show seven days a week.

The program is tightly aligned to the WVSOM mission by reaching rural areas within West Virginia to educate children about health, nutrition, exercise and stimulate their interest in science. Abracadabra is the only children’s television series that presents health education, nutrition and science in a fun and entertaining venue, combining these with magic, ventriloquism and original songs for children ages 4 to 10.

This half-hour PBS series is hosted by physician/ magician/ventriloquist Michael Adelman, D.O., D.P.M., J.D., WVSOM president, with a cast of colorful characters.

“The Abracadabra lessons range from teaching children to lead a healthy lifestyle, using safety precautions and stimulating an interest in science to developing acceptable social behaviors,” Adelman said.

“We try to provide real life situations that children can relate to.”

The program also helps raise visibility of WVSOM throughout the state in addition to improving the health of the next generation of West Virginia residents. “The Board of Governors for WVSOM has consistently supported Abracadabra and the important role it plays in improving the health of West Virginia’s youngest citizens,” said Cheryl Schreiber, WVSOM 2014-2015 Board of Governors chair.

Abracadabra is endorsed by the West Virginia Department of Education and supported by the WVSOM Board of Governors and WV Public Broadcasting. Underwriters include Charleston Area Medical Center, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of West Virginia, BrickStreet Foundation and WV Mutual Insurance Company.

As the show has grown in popularity so have the requests from schools for Abra Live! performances. This year, more than 3200

students have seen these shows which reinforce healthy choices and practices.

The show’s message is enhanced by the elementary school outreach program, coordinated by Dezi Davis, who plays “Daisy” in the show. Davis provides healthy, nutritional and social messages in the classrooms of area elementary schools.

OUR FOUNDATION OF SUPPORT The WVSOM Foundation is the base on which private support enhances the WVSOM experience.

The 2014-2015 academic year was a successful year with several notable accomplishments: The 5 for 5 Campaign asks each donor to contribute a minimum of $500 a year for five consecutive years or to give $2,500 as a single contribution. This program continues to thrive through the generous support of new and original donors.

Capital Campaign – Excitement is growing as we develop a cohort of loyal supporters who have stepped forward to build necessary facilities. Pledges and payments are increasing as construction has been completed on the expansion of the Clinical Evaluation Center and is now underway on the new Student Center. Several new pledge commitments and contributions to name rooms in both facilities were received this year, but a number of opportunities remain available. Maintaining exceptional student 44

environments can only be accomplished with private support.

Student scholarship funding in the amount of $600,000. Their contribution will provide for multiple scholarships at the $10,000 and $20,000 level. In addition, the “John & Nancy Chambers Memorial Scholarship Fund” was established by Michael and Matthew Chambers in memory of their parents, who were WVSOM faculty members, to provide assistance to worthy students from rural communities who intend to practice in underserved areas. Also, the Osteopathic Principles and Practices Department established the “Marlene A. Wager 10-­Fingered OP&P Scholarship” in memory of Dr. Marlene Wager for recognizing the student voted as most skillful in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment by their peers.

The WVSOM Foundation distributed $134,500 in scholarships to students during the 2014 - 2015 academic year.

Student Support – The WVSOM Foundation supported more than 80 students who attended “D.O. Day on the Hill,” provided funds to purchase medical supplies for the PAX Club’s 10th anniversary mission trip, and was a sponsor of the Grand Affair.

More than $30,000 was raised by WVSOM supporters for student scholarships through the Focus on Excellence raffle, thanks to long-time foundation board member, Steve Talbott, and his company Greenbrier Ford, who donated the grand prize a brand new Ford Focus.

In addition, the WVSOM Foundation sponsored an educational seminar called “Money Matters for Medical Students” designed to provide students with resources for responsible financial management.

The first Thank-­a-­Thon was held when students spent the day making personal phone calls to almost 300 individual donors to say “thank you” and tell them how their gifts made a difference.

The WVSOM Foundation is a part of Amazon Smile, which enables participating customers of Amazon. com to designate a percentage of each purchase they make as a contribution to the WVSOM Foundation. The contribution is made by Amazon through their Amazon Smile Foundation and doesn’t cost the customer anything additional. WVSOM supporters are encouraged to sign up and select the WVSOM Foundation as their charity of choice.

Scott Keller, D.O., is the medical director for a group of dedicated volunteers that serve the underserved in the Atlanta area from a mobile medical unit under the name of Grace Medical Missions.

Steve Richman, D.O., was selected as the WV Rural Health Practitioner of the Year, by the WV Rural Health Association. The award was given Oct. 16, 2014, at the WV Rural Health Conference.

John Glover, D.O., was re-elected to the Board of Governors and the Nominating Committee of the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) on March 12, 2015, at the AAO’s Convocation in Louisville, Ky. A member of the AAO Board of Governors for more than 20 years, Dr. Glover was one of eight osteopathic physicians from around the country to be re-elected as a governor of the AAO, the largest medical society in the U.S. devoted to fostering osteopathic manipulative medicine and neuromusculoskeletal 52

Stephanie Peglow, D.O., finished her psychiatry chief resident year at Eastern Virginia Medical School having won the Research Award, Highest PRITE award and the American Psychiatric Association Resident Recognition Award. During residency, Dr. Peglow presented at two conferences, won awards for three poster presentations, and a paper she second authored won the American Society of Addiction Medicine of Addiction Medicine Scientific Program Planning Committee Award. Dr. Peglow began an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Yale University this past fall.

Karen Snider, D.O., is one of four osteopathic physician nominees from AACOM and AOA selected to serve on the ACGME Board of Directors to govern the single accreditation system for graduate medical education, effective Jan. 1, 2015.
