Technology is transforming the medical student’s experience The use of technology in medical schools has become as abundant as the Internet. When WVSOM first opened its doors in the 1970s students listened to lectures in the classroom while vigorously taking notes with pens and paper. Today, students can listen to lectures through online media files with their laptop computers being the primary source of medical information and note taking.

WVSOM medical students now incorporate technology into nearly every aspect of learning — including audio study aids, video capabilities in classrooms, electronic testing and electronic health records used in hospitals and clinics.

“We try to keep on the forefront of technology, because we are a service department to the students,” said Kim Ransom, WVSOM’s director of information technology. “We want to make sure students have what’s necessary so they can get the medical education they are here to receive.”

Celebration

40th

WVSOM marks a milestone

Every so often great memories are marked by great moments.

In August, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine celebrated many great moments during its 40th anniversary D.O.c-tacular event — leaving ever-lasting memories among

the alumni who have shaped the past 40 years at the medical school.

Graduates and guests were treated to everything they could ask for in a reunion including continuing medical education, musical entertainment, plentiful food and a formal evening at The Greenbrier.

The weekend combined the past and present, the old and new and the novice with the experienced. In conjunction with the anniversary celebration the school’s annual white coat ceremony took place to recognize the newest class of osteopathic medical students.

There were alumni who make regular visits to the campus, who throughout the weekend, were searching for classmates they haven’t seen in years. For others, it was the first time they had been back to the school since they graduated. Many were in awe of the campus transformations.

David Allen was the first WVSOM student to ever walk across the stage at graduation and receive his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree.

Allen makes occasional visits to the campus and continues to be impressed by the transformations that have taken place in the past 40 years.

“It’s a jaw dropper,” the 1978 graduate said. “It’s beyond the wildest dream I could have had of what this school might become one day. It’s just unbelievable when I walk around campus and see everything that has been done here.”

John Hibler, a graduate from the Class of 1979, visits the campus about every three years to give lectures or attend continuing medical education courses.

“The development of campus is wonderful,” Hibler said. “I don’t think you could ask for a better campus in the U.S. We have the newest and most modern classrooms and labs.”

He’s already anticipating the next milestone anniversary.

“I would encourage anyone who graduated from WVSOM who didn’t make it to the 40th anniversary to plan to attend the 50th. I’m sure it’ll be even bigger and better,” he said.

Patti Arnett was not going to miss an opportunity to attend the celebration after seeing a list of her classmates who were planning on attending.

“As soon as I saw the names of the people who were coming I had to come,” the 1989 graduate said. “I knew I wouldn’t have the opportunity to see most of these people again.”

It was a touching and poignant moment for Arnett to watch a tribute video of all the graduates who had passed away over the 40 years. Whether it was an unexpected death during a person’s youth or old age, seeing the faces of those who could not share the milestone with their classmates pulled at Arnett’s heart.

“I feel really sad for the people who did not come to this event,” she said. “There’s always something going on in our busy lives, but to be able to see my friends and see that tribute, is something that I’ll remember.”

Spouse and children activities/ Cooking demonstrations/ Historic tour For many, WVSOM faculty, staff, students and graduates are part of one extended family. The anniversary weekend was a reflection of that philosophy. Cooking demonstrations, a historic walking tour and children’s activities were a way to include the entire WVSOM family in the celebration.

Friday afternoon, three cooking demonstrations were offered.

They included dessert tips from Gina Lang, a culinary arts graduate with an established bakery business in Lewisburg, instruction on how to bake an award-winning apple pie from nationally-recognized baker Debbie Pope, and information about wine and cheese pairings from Tamera Pence, owner of Bella the Corner Gourmet, and Amy Hitzig, a wine expert.

Karen Daughtry, whose husband graduated from WVSOM in 1987, attended all three afternoon demonstrations.

“This is all very well planned,” she said of the activities.

“Often, reunion activities are only directed toward the former students. It’s nice to have something for husbands and wives who aren’t attending the CME.” The couple traveled from Harrisburg, Pa., to attend the eventsfilled weekend. Daughtry said they even made a special effort to change their vacation plans so they would not miss the celebration.

“This is all wonderful,” she said. “You can tour the school, see what’s going on and meet people who you haven’t seen in awhile. Plus you get to meet other spouses and find out that there are a lot of things you have in common with them.”

Current WVSOM students made sure alumni children also had a great time. Volunteers kept younger visitors entertained with a slew of activities including bounce houses and inflatable slides, healthy snacks, face painting, coloring, crafts and games.

Former faculty member Dr. Larry Davis provided a historic walking tour of Lewisburg. The tour of town included stops at the North House Museum, the Old Stone Presbyterian Church, the New River Community and Technical College, Carnegie Hall and Lewisburg’s historic cemetery. Dr. Davis provided information and stories about important events during the 1800s, including the Battle of Lewisburg in 1862.

Family barbecue and Friday evening concert Imagine a typical family reunion — one that includes people you haven’t seen in years who instantly bring a smile to your face, an abundance of food and plenty of conversation reminiscing about the past and catching up on the present. Imagine that event taking place at the alumni center with a view of a campus that reminds you of your days in medical school, but also reflects a place that’s been developed and transformed to even greater beauty. Imagine all of that and you will get an idea of the family barbecue that was offered Friday evening.

Nearly 1,000 people attended the barbecue, one of whom was particularly instrumental to the school’s early success. Dr. Roland P. Sharp made a special appearance to see the students he helped teach and lead during his presidency in the 1970s.

“The progress of the school is unbelievable,” remarked Dr. Sharp.

“I think a lot of it has to do with the first staff that we had there and the first group of students. They invested in our school when we first started classes. Now it’s exactly what I wanted it to be.”

David Allen was one of those students who remembers being under the guidance of Dr. Sharp.

“Dr. Sharp was not only our president but our histology instructor,” he said. “We were talking about the first day in histology lab and how we got some boxes and Elmer’s glue and put together our stools for anatomy.”

Allen said Sharp was more than a president, more than a professor. He was also a confidant.

“He was like our adopted dad. You could go into his office and talk to him at any time. We all were pretty attached to Roland,” he said.

Allen was also the first recipient of the Dr. Roland P. Sharp President’s Award, which is now a part of the school’s annual Spring Awards Ceremony. The award is given to a student based on academic performance, osteopathic professional interest and leadership.

The anniversary evening continued into the night with magic and musical entertainment. Before the start of the performances under the tent, special guest U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin addressed the guests and discussed the journey WVSOM has been through to reach a 40-year milestone.

He said he based the caliber of physicians on his brother — also in WVSOM’s first graduating class — who decided to pursue osteopathic medicine. Manchin expressed gratitude that WVSOM is taking care of rural West Virginia and taking care of West Virginia families.

“Thank you all for what you’ve done,” he told the crowd. “This school continues to be an outstanding star for the state of West Virginia and I couldn’t be more proud.”

A remembrance video highlighted alumni and their memories of not only their time at WVSOM, but the development of the school. The video provided a photomontage of milestone events, key people and campus development. It also recognized each graduating class. A separate presentation honored the WVSOM graduates who have passed away since the school’s inception.

Dinner/dance at The Greenbrier Resort The elegance of The Greenbrier went hand in hand with the elegance of a dinner and dance for WVSOM’s 40th anniversary celebration. It was a chance for physicians to trade in their scrubs and white coats for suits and dresses and to enjoy a three-course dinner and dancing on Saturday night.

For many guests, it was the event they were most looking forward to during the weekend.

One of those people was Velle Bauman from the Class of 1986.

“I really was looking forward to this event. It’s nice to have everybody here in a formal manner and the location is wonderful,” she said.

Dr. Bruce Berry, the vice chair for the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, was a special guest at the dinner and dance. He is an M.D. who graduated from West Virginia University in 1972. As a higher education representative, he said, it is remarkable to see WVSOM grow into the institution it has become today.

“This school has survived difficult times and it really should have,” he said. “It produced the right type of physicians to take care of the populous of West Virginia.

“My wife and I have noticed that this is truly a family,” he continued.

“We have been welcomed with open arms and there has been a great attendance by the alumni and their families. When you look at the entire weekend, it has been very special.”

Mark Haegele, a 1989 graduate, shared his reflections.

“The entire weekend was very well put together. I’m impressed,” he said.

“When my wife and I received the information about this event we knew we had to come because we knew it would be something great. I don’t know how you can make it any better.”

During the evening, each graduate received a 40th anniversary commemorative book and video.

Farewell brunch After a weekend filled with friends and family, memories and significant moments, entertainment and events, it was time for guests to say their goodbyes. There was no better way than with a farewell brunch. Guests lined the breakfast buffet before bidding adieu to their former classmates and all those who made their time at WVSOM both special and memorable.

Ernie Miller, president of the West Virginia Society of Osteopathic Medicine and a 1982 graduate, said overall the weekend was everything graduates could have imagined.

“The CME is always a good thing and the social events really allowed the classes to interact with one another,” he said.

“It’s been really nice to catch up with others. We all get busy with our jobs and we don’t get to do this that much. This gives us an opportunity to reminisce and see what people are up to.”

“Because we wanted to celebrate the school and honor those who have believed in it over the years, we created an event that would bring together alumni from each graduating class,” said President Michael Adelman.

“The participation of so many of our graduates made the weekend a success far beyond my expectations.” He paused for a moment in reflection. “Of course, it’s probably not too soon to start thinking about how WVSOM is going to surpass it for the next big occasion.”

Upon his graduation from WVSOM, Dr. Fink completed an internship at Welch Emergency Hospital in Welch, W.Va. Certified in family practice medicine, he has also completed training in the Johnson & Johnson/UCLA Health Care Executive Program with the Anderson School of Management. During his professional career, he has garnered numerous appointments including Chief Medical Officer of AccessHealth and Director of Medical Education for AccessHealth Teaching Health Center. He is a former president of the West Virginia Board of Osteopathy and a past president of the West Virginia Society of Osteopathic Medicine. Recently, he was elected to his fourth term as chair of the WVSOM Board of Governors. He and his wife, Joanie, have one son, Christopher, who is married to Sarah. Jessica Smith Smith said she usually has her camera with her everywhere she goes, and where she has gone is all across the U.S. Originally from the West, she said, the photographic opportunities are more dry, warm colors, whereas in West Virginia and the East she photographs more luscious and green foliage.

“Whatever I find that is neat or pretty I take pictures of. It’s about being able to capture the nature of beauty wherever you are,” she said.

While in West Virginia for medical school, Smith was drawn to photographing waterfalls. She found the falling waters within the mountains during her hikes to be intriguing. Locally she has photographed images at Sandstone Falls, Greenbrier State Forest, Blue Bend and Falls of Hills Creek.

No matter what path Whaley continues on through his medical career, he said, he is grateful to WVSOM for his journey so far.

MISSION TRIP

Students use healing hands to help others When students in WVSOM’s PAX International club traveled to the Dominican Republic during spring break they didn’t just dig their toes in the white sand and splash around in the clear blue water.

Organization members stayed in an isolated campsite for a about a week in March to help care for natives of the Dominican Republic. The 29 students, alumni Dr. Kimberly Borracho, Dr. Jeanne Wahl and her daughter, Erin Noland, made a campsite in Neyba, which is near the capital of Santa Domingo, their home during that time. The students provided care for children, with the pediatric population representing about 1,100 visitors during the four and a half days of clinic.

“The students assist doctors with physical exams and documentation,” said Dmitry Kozhevnikov, the 2011-12 PAX club president. “A lot of what we saw was upper respiratory complaints, general flu-like symptoms and some chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. We were the only medical attention that a lot of people had. Many of these people only see a doctor maybe once a year because they live in isolated areas.”

Kozhevnikov said that mission trips like the one to the Dominican Republic is a way for students to incorporate what they are learning on patients.

“It gives them a good opportunity to integrate all the things they learn.

And it helps the people in the Dominican Republic. Given the fact that they don’t have great access to medical care, even a week of us being there helps.”

The trips are also a way for WVSOM to develop relationships with other organizations abroad. Kozhevnikov said the NonGovernmental Organization (NGO) based in the Dominican Republic works well with medical schools and aspiring doctors to provide care for those who don’t have access to it.

“The people in these countries really do appreciate it,” he said.

“They are happy that we come and are grateful we take the time to help them.”

The club raised more than $10,000 for the mission trip from the group’s largest fundraiser — the International Festival. The money raised goes toward helping to fund medical supplies and student fees associated with the trip.

Andrew Petersen and Michael Antolini were awarded the Cheryl & Michael Adelman WVSOM Leadership Scholarship during this year’s Graduation Awards Ceremony that took place in May. The graduates said that being acknowledged as leaders among their classmates from an institution they think highly of is a true honor.

“WVSOM is a very solid school and to be recognized in WVSOM’s eyes as a solid individual is definitely an honor,” Petersen said. “The fact that WVSOM thinks of me as a leader is also a huge compliment.”

Pediatrics Club gains national recognition

Students take part in Day of Caring

Members of the WVSOM Pediatrics Club traveled to Memphis, Tenn., during Spring Break to take part in the annual ACOP Spring Conference. As part of the four-day event, the ACOP hosted an awards banquet to recognize achievements of both practicing physicians and students.

WVSOM was well represented at the awards ceremony and won two of the student awards — both for their work in the national American Childhood Cancer Organization “PJammin’” fundraising campaign. Awards received were one for the most money raised as a student club ($937) and most creative fundraiser (peanut butter and jelly bars and bake sales).

In addition to club awards, past Peds Club President Jason Jackson was honored individually. He was elected to the two-year position of the Student Member to the National ACOP Board of Trustees.

WVSOM students traded in studying for some manual labor on April 21 when they joined with the United Way of Greenbrier Valley and Generation Greenbrier Valley to perform service projects for area communities.

Every year students take part in revamping, renovating, cleaning and beautifying different organizations and parks in the area. This year, about 48 first- and second-year students volunteered their time working at area parks, youth camps, Alderson Hospitality House, tutoring centers, day care centers and Habitat for Humanity.

“This is a great break from our studying and it’s a nice way to spend a Saturday morning,” said Katharine Druetzler, former SGA State Advisory Council of Students Representative. “The community service organizations that we worked with all expressed appreciation for the amount of work the volunteers accomplished in a short amount of time.”

Human Gift Registry recognizes donors First-year medical students came together on May 11 to honor the 58 people who donated their bodies to the school to benefit the anatomical training of new physicians.

The Human Gift Registry Memorial Service is a final tribute for families of those who donated their bodies to advance science and educate the next generation of medical doctors.

Students in the Class of 2015 thanked the families and friends of those who donated and expressed how each gift impacted their lives.

“Your loved ones gave our medical school a special gift,” said Andrew Nackashi, Class of 2015 president. “This generous gift to the Class of 2015 has impacted us all significantly. It made us think of family, those who have passed and those who are still with us. Yet knowledge was the ultimate gift of these individuals who mean so much to you and who now have a special place in our hearts.”

Janaki Nandam said that the selfless generosity of each donor not only enhanced the students’ education, but also taught them lessons that will impact future generations.

“The knowledge we’ve acquired from your loved ones was not simply for the purpose of understanding science or so that we could pass arbitrary exams that mark the many milestones on our path to becoming physicians,” Nandam told family members. “Know that the knowledge was a gift, an invaluable gift, which will resonate through our medical careers and affect countless lives.”

COM week in Lewisburg The annual Celebrate Osteopathic Medicine week featured a variety of events and guest speakers from Feb. 20-24. The event was first recognized on the WVSOM campus in 2006 and its purpose is to inspire and educate WVSOM students, faculty and staff about osteopathic approaches to health care. It is also designed to help educate the local community about the osteopathic profession.

On Feb. 8, Lewisburg Mayor John Manchester signed the “Osteopathic Medicine Recognition Week” proclamation with Dr. Michael Adelman, Dr. James Nemitz, Dr. Karen Steele, Belinda Evans and student leaders.

The week-long events planned included presentations about medical mission trips in India and Africa, osteopathic medicine in the Caribbean, Native American healing traditions and a Black History Month lecture from William Anderson, D.O.

Mini-Med offered to community WVSOM students helped residents in the community understand the osteopathic profession through four “Mini-Medical School” sessions throughout March and part of April.

The goal of the community mini-med was to explain why osteopathic medicine is unique as well as answer questions about D.O.s, said Kati Druetzler, community outreach coordinator.

“As medical students we enjoy teaching people about what osteopathic medicine is,” she said. “Anytime we can talk to people about maintaining their health and explain how their body works is something we enjoy doing.”

Each of the four sessions focused on a different system in the body. They included cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal. The Student Government Association hosts the various Mini-Medical Schools throughout the year, which have been well-received by the community and high school students in previous years.

The latest information available was given to participants regarding the ICD-10-CM Coding system that should be implemented in the near future. Primary care physicians were familiarized with the presentation and treatment of commonly encountered animal bites. The most common symptom issues in palliative care, along with different treatment modalities, were discussed to ensure West Virginia physicians were up-to-date on their End of Life care requirement. Participants now understand the interventional pain management options for patients with low back pain and understand spinal cord stimulation and patient selection for its application. Primary care physicians were familiarized with a basic understanding of a general urology diagnosis and workup and when to refer a patient to a urologist.

Greenbrier Leadership Institute expanding Internet capabilities

Before the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine opened its doors to train primary care physicians in rural areas, the Greenbrier Military School had been training and educating young men to become disciplined leaders in society. The military school has been, in one way or another, part of Greenbrier County for about 200 years. So when the school closed in 1972 those who were affiliated with the school yearned for something more than just memories. Every year since 1982 a military school

The Greenbrier Military School has worked hard to preserve its history but now is trying to find ways to keep a presence in today’s society. With its legacy secured and looking to the future, the Greenbrier Military School Alumni Association (GMSAA) has established the Greenbrier Leadership Institute (GLI). The institute is an effort by former GMS students to perpetuate the leadership skills that were developed in them during their days at GMS. Leadership skills development has been provided for the past several years to students in Greenbrier County public schools, but has now expanded and is being offered to students in other counties within West Virginia. The goal of the program is to be self-supporting and

Four medical students receive The Pittsburgh Foundation grant The WVSOM Foundation Inc. has been awarded a grant for $9,860 from The Pittsburgh Foundation to help four osteopathic medical students from Pennsylvania. The grant is funded by the West Allegheny Physicians’ Association Fund to assist students from the southwestern portion of the state.

“I’m paying for medical school all by myself so it’s a nice support,” she said. “I was born and raised in Pittsburgh so it’s good to know that they are still supporting me even though I’m not presently in the city.”
