Message from the Director In May 2012 the museum was notified that the City of Wenatchee planned to layoff four of the five employees that were financed by the city — the public side of the partnership that formed Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center. Those four people comprised an essential part of the core team of professionals at the museum and were the only full-time workers with benefits other than the Director. On July 31, 2012, the museum’s Curator of Collections Mark Behler, Exhibits Coordinator Bill Rietveldt, Public Relations Coordinator Chris Rader and Museum Secretary Pauline Sweeney lost their jobs. Pauline was later rehired as a part-time employee until she retired, which took place March 28, 2013. As a measure of mitigation, the city entered into an agreement with the non-profit to operate the museum. Those funds were used to offer part-time work to some of the laid off workers. Bill Rietveldt was hired as Curator of Exhibits & Programs and the association was able to offer Mark Behler just a few hours a week as Curator of Collections. Chris Rader was contracted to continue to be the editor of Confluence magazine. All of those affected wanted to continue to work with the museum (now with the non-profit association) even with cut hours, less pay and little or no benefits. Now, the museum association has the challenge to look to the community and other sources of funding to rebuild and become strong enough to hire the professional staff it needs at a livable wage to care for and provide interpretation for the artifacts, photographs and archives that comprise our collective memory of the region. We feel the service we provide is unique and necessary to a healthy community. We can strive to continue to offer meaningful programs that interpret our history and heritage, provide access to the resources and research we hold in trust for the public, and welcome people as an inclusive community gathering place that meets its mission to “inspire dynamic connections to the unique heritage of the Wenatchee Valley.”
Wells House becomes part of the Museum
Despite our challenges, we did accomplish a great deal in 2012 as you will see in the pages of this report. One of the most notable accomplishments was the agreement forged with Wenatchee Valley College and the Wells House Committee to have the museum become the organization responsible for Wells House. The original volunteers of the Wells House Committee (and some new ones!) will continue to be involved in the dayto-day operation and care of this historic treasure in partnership with the museum. The committee members were honored with the Wenatchee Valley Living Treasure Award in 2012 for saving Wells House and continuing to restore and operate it for the last 40 years.
Wells House was built by Highline Canal developer William T. Clark and wife Adelaide in 1910. A. Z. and Emogene Wells purchased the home in 1919, donating it to the Wenatchee School District in 1949 to be used as a college. The Wells House Committee was formed in 1973 to save the building from destruction when its usefulness as a college building was at an end. Most of the members had attended Wenatchee Valley College when Wells House was used as classroom space, offices and a girls’ dormitory. The group assumed responsibility for the home’s preservation, managing the house and grounds for active use by the community. Members honored at the March 2012 event were Dorothy and Duane Brunner, Shirley and Bob Lindell, Lucy Kenoyer, Judy Johnson, Kelly Wavra and newest member Kris Bassett. The house and committee became a part of the museum in 2012 and will begin a new era as a community asset that is cared for, restored, used and treasure by the community.

The Museum’s Board of Trustees has the responsibility for financial and administrative oversight, strategy and planning for the museum. The work of the board in 2012 was intensified by the move of the City of Wenatchee to cut four of five permanent full-time employees who staffed the museum. Each of the board members did their part and worked to advocate for the museum, fundraise and engage in numerous strategy sessions to find a way to continue to operate in such a challenging situation.
Loss of Museum Board President and Friend Robert D. “Bob” Lawson (1927 ~ 2012)
We lost our friend and Museum Board president early Christmas Eve morning, December 24, 2012, following a short illness. Bob was born in Wenatchee and his father, Arthur was a school principal. The family moved due to his father’s work and eventually settled in Yakima where Bob graduated from high school. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a company clerk for the Occupation Forces in Japan. After Army service, Bob attended Washington State University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business. Bob became a banker for a number of years, then a sales representative for Cuckler Steel Buildings and finally accepted a job in Wenatchee with the Washington State Department of Transportation. At the DOT, Bob worked in real estate services, which involved land acquisition, appraising and management. He later became an administrator and was District Real Estate Service Manager at the time of his retirement in 1993. Bob was active in his church and in community volunteer activities. He was instrumental in the financing and construction of the King’s Orchard Church. He served more than 20 years on the board of North Central Credit Union (now Numerica) and he was a volunteer for the Music Theatre of Wenatchee where he was honored as Volunteer of the Year. Bob was also an active volunteer and President of the Wenatchee Valley Museum Board of Trustees. He will be missed by all.

Museum Accomplishments 2012 Museum Authors New Book on Wenatchee Historic Places
Museum staff took the opportunity to contribute a book on historic places in Wenatchee to Arcadia Publishings’ “Images of America” series. The collaboration allowed the museum to show off some of its historic photo collection and knowledge of early businesses, residences and important events while providing a resource for those interested in knowing more about a specific location in town. Museum Curator of Collections Mark Behler came up with the format of organizing information, and together with Confluence Editor Chris Rader, provided the photographs from the museum collection. Rader gleaned information for the written content from the museum records and other sources of research to write the chapters and photo captions. It was a great team effort to produce all the material for the book and deliver for printing. The book Wenatchee is available for purchase from area retailers including the Museum Store. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the book goes to the museum.
Programs, Exhibits and Education
2012 was a busy time for the museum, its staff and volunteers. However, when four full-time staff members were laid off, program plans for the last part of the year became limited to those that could still be provided with the remaining staff and resources. Looking forward, all programs and exhibits undertaken by the museum must be self-supporting, have strong partnerships and/or are supported by sponsorships and donations. Listed are the public and educational programs and exhibitions provided by Wenatchee Valley Museum in 2012. Our Volunteer Affiliate groups and other organizations using the museum as a venue were responsible for an additional 85 events and programs.

The museum produced printed newsletters for its members from the beginning of the year through the summer. It also produced, for the first time, two widely distributed Program Guides. That service has been discontinued with the layoff of our Public Relations Coordinator. Now technology-based communication has served to distribute information to the public and other mailings to our members to help keep them informed. The museum communicates through various web calendars, email newsletters, a blog, Facebook, Twitter and its website.

Collections & Acquisitions The Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center is proud of our extensive collection of photographs, printed materials and artifacts that illustrate aspects of the history of North Central Washington. Each year we receive new donations which enhance our ability to tell the story of the region; for these we are grateful. Donated items are used as resources in exhibits, programs, and publications. The Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center is a public/private partnership between the City of Wenatchee and the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center Association, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit corporation. In 2012, the Wenatchee Valley Museum expenditure of funds provided by the City of Wenatchee was $511,603.25 for the museum’s basic operations. These municipal funds are not reflected in this summary statement, but may be reviewed through city budget documents. Privately raised program revenues and expenditures managed by the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center Association are as follows:

Generous gift helps museum at a crucial time Clark Calder donates house
There is the misconception that a person must be very well off to be a major benefactor to the museum. That is simply not true, and Donor Clark Calder (1924 – 2012) proves the point that a person of modest means can make a meaningful difference to the community through planned giving.
Mr. Calder was a retired mechanical engineer with a modest home in South Wenatchee. While battling severe emphysema, he decided to tie up loose ends with his estate before succumbing to his illness. Paul Brown, a former museum board member, knew Mr. Calder and worked with him to set up a living trust in 2005. At the time Mr. Calder expected to live just a few months, instead he was with us until 2012. During the intervening years, Mr. Calder continued to live in the house. Upon his death, the house became the property of the museum. Museum and Rotary volunteers tackled the cleaning, repairs and painting of the house to get it ready to sell. The proceeds of the sale will go into the museum’s Building Fund and Endowment Fund to ensure the long term health of our non-profit organization. Mr. Calder’s legacy will live with the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center to benefit our community.
