About WVC WVC IS A 501(C)3 NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

WVC provides comprehensive, hands-on, and practical continuing education to veterinary and human health professionals. Founded as an annual meeting in 1928, that flagship event continues today as the WVC Annual Conference, which attracts over 15,000 participants.

Recognizing the importance of environment in the learning process, WVC launched the stateof-the-art Oquendo Center in 2009.

A revolutionary facility in the field, the cutting-edge learning center features a 190-seat theater, fully equipped with clinical and diagnostic laboratories and the most advanced technology available worldwide.

Initially named “Intermountain Livestock Sanitary Association,”

the association was renamed “Western Veterinary Conference” in 1965. In 2014, the brand was changed to “WVC,” and in 2017, the organization officially began operating as WVC. Las Vegas, a premier destination for large conventions, has been home to WVC since 1963.

WVC operates under the leadership of a Board of Directors, elected by participants of WVC programs.

Capital Campaign

WVC understands that the medical world is changing rapidly.

That’s why for over 90 years, we have adapted and grown the veterinary and human health continuing education programs to stay on the forefront of medical discovery for the benefit of all. To continue this adapting and growing, WVC launched a capital campaign. By working with generous partners and supporters, we can be even more effective in our mission for better patient care.

EXPANDING Quality healthcare is essential for life.

At the heart of healthcare are medical professionals who have the skills and knowledge to improve patient outcomes. WVC is positioned to play an even greater role to assure the highest quality of healthcare is delivered into the future. In October 2019, WVC acquired the additional 71,000-squarefoot facility named Eastern Campus.

This new, customizable space increases the capacity for more hands-on education for both veterinary and human health professionals.

Renovations will be finished and the new facility will open in June 2020.

With the funds raised through the capital campaign, WVC plans to expand its programming, make improvements to both facilities, and update equipment and technology. These projects will help WVC enhance its impact with more hands-on education for both veterinary and human health professionals, which will ultimately improve everyone’s quality of life, including that of you and your loved ones.

CLINICAL PROFICIENCY EXAM Developed by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), the Clinical Proficiency Examination (CPE) is the fourth step in assessing educational equivalency for purposes of the

Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) or Canadian National Examining Board (NEB) certification. It is intended to assess the practical, clinical veterinary skills of an “entry-level” veterinarian.

The hands-on, performance based CPE is a three-day, seven-section, clinical skills examination administered by the faculty of a college of veterinary medicine or other authorized testing institution.

Since 2005, nearly 4,000 veterinary candidates selected Oquendo Center as their Clinical Proficiency Exam testing site. As one of two testing locales available in the country, the Oquendo Center accommodates the highest number of exam dates for global veterinary school graduates who seek licensure in the United States.

CME ACCREDITATION With plans for expansion well underway, WVC hosted three human health events in 2019 in the continuing effort toward CME accreditation.

WVC plans to increase the amount of human health events to over 100 in 2020, anticipating accreditation from the ACCME in December 2020. For the first time in our history, WVC will be an accredited provider of both veterinary and human medical continuing education.

President’s Statement

The past year has been one of tremendous growth and change for WVC. We expanded our programming to include training for human healthcare professionals as well as veterinary professionals, broadening our mission to improve both animal and human health worldwide. In October, we acquired the additional 71,000-square-foot Eastern Campus, greatly reshaping the scope of our capabilities. WVC also welcomed our new CEO, Andrea Davis. On top of it all, WVC has decided to take the next step in our organization’s evolution with a new, all-encompassing name and brand.

Amid these exciting events, we’ve made sure to never compromise on the quality of the education and resources we provide. We are doubling down on our legacy of excellence as the go-to source for innovative, practical continuing education opportunities. 2019 will be remembered as a turning point for us—one that we will celebrate for years to come.

A Message from the CEO

As WVC’s new CEO, I am so proud to lead this exceptional organization into another year of growth and success.

The exciting changes coming to WVC this year will expand the scope of our mission and challenge us to accomplish even more. With the help of our dedicated team, the Board of Directors, and your support, I know WVC will continue to stand out as a source of continuing education and a top destination for medical professionals across the globe.

To give you a brief history of my background, I received a BS in Healthcare Administration from Oregon State and a Master of Public Administration from UNLV. I received my Lean Six Sigma Green and Black Belts in 2016, also completing the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Advance Leadership Program in December 2019. I am active with the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and have a strong interest in mentoring future leaders.

I’ve worked in the Southern Nevada Healthcare Community for the past 20 years and have spent over 10 years working within hospitals in business

development and executive-level roles. During my time in hospital leadership, I held positions that include COO at Desert Springs Hospital, CEO at HealthSouth Desert Canyon Rehab Hospital, and SVP of Operations/Ethics and Compliance Officer at Southern Hills Hospital.

What strikes me about WVC is how passionate we are about the mission to provide the highest quality yearround continuing education. The whole team believes in the positive difference WVC makes in the lives of healthcare professionals and their patients. That passion is what has brought us to where we are now, and that passion is what will make WVC continually successful in the future.

February 17-20, 2019 | Las Vegas Over 15,000 veterinary professionals gathered at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas for the WVC 91st Annual Conference, February 17-20.

Participants had the opportunity to choose from more than 900 scientific sessions, interact with over 500 exhibiting companies in the Exhibit Hall, and network with colleagues from 29 countries and all 50 states.

The WVC 91st Annual Conference scientific sessions covered topics across a large array of important subject matters, including small animal, avian and exotics, food animal, equine, veterinary technician, and practice management. The lectures, hands-on labs, and workshops were specifically designed for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and practice managers. The Exhibit Hall featured a reinvented New Product Showcase, which gave participants an exclusive look at the newest veterinary products,

introduced through interactive trivia and podcast elements to create a learning experience and enhance engagement.

Conference entertainment and events provided an added opportunity for the industry to gather, make connections, and build relationships. Conference goers enjoyed Hill’s Evening & Conversation with Mayim Bialik and a concert sponsored by Merck Animal Health with Grammy award-winning country music artist Keith Urban.

WVC Academy Developed in collaboration with veterinary specialists, WVC Academy provides more than 50 labs throughout the year, with topics ranging from endoscopy and small animal dentistry to critical care, orthopedics, ultrasound, and spinal surgery.

Through hands-on practice over the course of two to four days, participants gain confidence with new procedures that they can immediately apply in practice. We maintain a low instructor-to-participant ratio that encourages an intimate, personalized learning experience and peer-to-peer interaction.

In 2019, over 4,000 veterinary professionals attended a WVC Academy course at the Oquendo Center, about 23% more than in 2018.

WVC looks forward to serving even more veterinary professionals in the future.

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN SYMPOSIUM In 2019, WVC produced two successful Veterinary Technician Symposia featuring a variety of topics. Both events reached capacity, selling out and attracting a combined 224 participants.

These specialized sessions are the only stand-alone, hands-on continuing education events available that are specifically designed for veterinary technicians. Each event offered 24 hours of continuing education credits and a unique opportunity for veterinary technicians to increase their knowledge,

sharpen their skills, and experience unparalleled networking to collaborate and collect new ideas.

Now in its fourth year, the summit is a unique continuing education opportunity focused on self-education, guided reflection, and exploring one’s full potential over two days of authority-centered immersive sessions and workshops.

Featuring expert instruction with three module rotations, presentations taught techniques to cultivate communication, drive emotional intelligence, and grow leadership skills. In 2019, WVC welcomed 97 veterinarians and paraprofessionals during the 91st Annual Conference, providing 6 hours of continuing education credits.

ALASKA AN ADVENTURE IN EDUCATION Destination CE provided participants the unique opportunity to join worldrenowned veterinary specialists in one of the top travel destinations while honing their orthopedic and radiology skills over a five-day adventure.

Presented by expert instructors Brian Beale, DVM, DACVS; Jay Griffin, DVM, DACVR; and Brian Poteet, DVM, MS, DACVR,

45 veterinary professionals ventured off to this luxury Alaskan cruise, August 4-11. Education sessions focused on developing decisionmaking skills using diagnostic images to optimize orthopedic surgical approaches and results.

Digital Learning Initiatives

QUICK CUP OF KNOWLEDGE In 2019, WVC debuted weekly segments featuring Dr. Natalie Marks in a video series called “Quick Cup of Knowledge.”

These weekly 10-minute videos feature interviews with a variety of veterinary experts about the latest happenings in their field. The series YouTube channel is now at 330 subscribers and growing.

Quick Cup of Knowledge also comes in podcast form and is available in the Resource Library on WVC’s website.

VET CHAT BLOG In conjunction with the Quick Cup of Knowledge videos, WVC launched a blog in June 2019 called Vet Chat. With hundreds of readers a month, we have seen it grow into a quick way for veterinary professionals to get useful, accurate information and interact with us.

Community Service LAS VEGAS HOSPITALITY ASSOCIATION FILL-A-BAG WITH CHEER Each year, WVC provides gift bags filled with toys, books, school supplies, and winter clothes for underprivileged elementary school children. These philanthropic efforts are aligned with the Las Vegas Hospitality Association (LVHA) Fill-a-Bag with Cheer program. Clothing and shoe sizes, favorite colors and favorite characters are provided and team members fill bags with these items to help children during the holiday season.

For the 12th consecutive year, representatives from the Las Vegas Hospitality Association delivered “bags of cheer� to over 500 children in need. This included donations from WVC.

K9 MEDIC Twice in 2019, WVC hosted K9 Medic training at the Oquendo Center, where first responders (i.e. firemen, paramedics, and metro officers) are trained on how to respond to a K9 officer emergency in the field. Special forces practiced maneuvers and first-aid techniques during their recent visit to the Oquendo Center and Eastern Campus.

K9 MEDIC is devoted to ensuring all K9s have access to leadingedge medical care equal to the best human standards available in the field. K9 MEDIC is dedicated to serving K9s in THEIR time of need!

NOTABLE CONTRIBUTIONS WVC surgeons spay and neuter many of the shelter dogs and cats utilized during WVC courses.

Several WVC veterinary technicians volunteer their services at the local vaccine clinics partnering with The Animal Foundation.

Several WVC team members volunteered with the Rogers Foundation wrapping gifts for children in their program.

WVC provided canine and feline dental examinations and services for local rescues to increase adoption chances.

We provided Jerry’s Rescue manikins for CPR training offered to the public through a local firehouse.

We partnered with Kingman Animal Shelter to house their dogs during the winter season due to overcrowding at their shelter. We housed, fed, and altered them.

We took blankets for donations for our partnering animal rescues.

WVC hosted CODE 3 when they taught animal forensics to various government employees.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

The Dr. W. Bruce Wren Food Animal Incentive Awards (FAIA) recognize recent graduates from veterinary colleges or schools to encourage veterinarians to enter food animal practice or other careers directly related to food animal practice, such as food animal education and/or research; assist in the development of leadership skills and aid in the progress of future leaders in food animal practice and related activities; and showcase the educational enrichment opportunities offered

by WVC. In 2019, five postgraduates were honored with the Dr. W. Bruce Wren Food Animal Incentive Award, named for longtime WVC food animal program manager and industry leader W. Bruce Wren, DVM.

Given for exceptional service over time, unselfish dedication to veterinary education and advancement of veterinary knowledge, and significant contributions to WVC and to the U.S. and global veterinary medicine. In 2019, this award was bestowed upon Dr. Tony Watson.
