Grammy nominee to perform at celebration By MATTIE WINOWITCH Editorial Assistant

Waynesburg University will celebrate the 167th anniversary of the granting of Waynesburg College's charter on March 22, and to celebrate, there is a special guest performing during the third annual Charter Day concert. The artist performing this year is four-time Grammy nominated Christian music artist Natalie Grant. Two years ago, the inauguration of President Lee was on Charter Day, and a concert with Michael W. Smith was held on campus to celebrate. President Lee liked the idea, and every year since a Charter Day concert has been held in conjunction with the celebration. “It’s basically our birthday,” said Mary Fox, event planner for the university. “It’s a birthday celebration of the institution, if you want to put it in those terms.” Every year the university attempts to get a well-known CHARTER >> A2

RETURN OF THE CUPS

Senate brings back Eberly cups Student displeasure leads to overturning of cost-cutting move By BRENDAN KEANY Op-Ed Editor

It is finished. The cups are back. Last Tuesday, the Waynesburg University Student Senate passed a bill to purchase and provide cups for the highlyfrequented coffee bar located on the first floor of Eberly Library. “We passed a bill that reinstated cups,” said Student Senate President Mike Merten. “We will be getting a set amount of cups that will not exceed $800 at this point.” Senate had previously stopped buying cups for the bar to cut budget costs, but overwhelmingly negative responses from the student body prompted a reversal of the “Students were expressing decision. “I voted ‘yes’ extreme dissatisfaction when [to reinstating cups were removed and cups] because I overwhelming support for see it as my responsibility to their return.” NICK CORDOVA represent the Senator students as best I can,” said sophomore Senator Nick Cordova. “Students were expressing extreme dissatisfaction when cups were removed and overwhelming support for their return.” Also decided at the meeting was the issue on what kind of cups Student Senate would purchase. “We are getting poly-paper cups, which are the waxcoated cups, and they should be a little thicker than the ones we had previously, so they should be a little better at insulation,” said Merten. “The cups should be back within the month, I believe.”

Senate debated the decision on cups for two weeks, and there was some debate during last Tuesday's meeting. However, the decision was made by a clear majority. Of the 17 who voted, ten were in favor, five objected and two abstained. Nevertheless, there were those on the student governing body that did not feel as sure about the decision. Shon Meade, a sophomore senator, abstained from the vote entirely. “I abstained because I saw the whole cup situation from both sides,” said Meade. “I saw that people wanted the cups back, which is Student Senate’s purpose, to basically serve the students.” “As for the other side,” he continued, “Senate would technically be going back on their word of getting rid of cups. We got rid of them to become more ecofriendly and save costs, but now that we brought the cups back, we’re going back CUPS >> A4

At a Student Senate meeting last week, senators voted to replace disposable coffee cups in Eberly Library within the next month, eliminating the need for students to carry their own mugs for coffee. The vote reversed an earlier Senate decision to remove cups in an effort to save money, which was met with oppostition from the student body. Jenny Schouppe, Yellow Jacket

The Top 50 Christian Colleges & Universities with the Lowest Debt Burden were recently named by Christian Universities Online, and Waynesburg was listed as the 12th best-valued school in their listing of nationwide universities and colleges. According to the website, the list attempts to present a ranking of Christian colleges and universities whose class of 2013 graduated with the lightest debt burden. The pool of institutions for the ranking was limited to schools which are members of or member eligible for the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. Jess Bish has never been out of the United States. She has never lived on her own. She doesn’t speak any German, and she has never worked in a controller’s office. All of that just changed. At the end of January, Bish left her home in Pittsburgh, Pa., and moved into an apartment in Degerloch, Germany for a six-month stay. During that time, she is interning at the Bosch headquarters in Stuttgart. “So far, everything has been very overwhelming, but exciting,” said Bish, a junior international business major at Waynesburg University. “It is difficult to adjust to being in a new place, let alone a new place where I do not speak the language, but I’m making it work.” As an intern at Bosch, Bish is working 35 hours per week in the Controller’s Office for Electric, Hybrid and Gasoline Cars, one of the departments in the automotive division at Bosch. She will be using Microsoft Excel to

create a variety of financial reports and then learning what the reports mean and how they fit into the structure of the company. The internship is providing Bish with a unique business experience, which she believes will be beneficial for her future in business once she learns the ropes. “The internship is giving me a taste of what it is like to work a full time job and

what is appropriate in an office setting,” said Bish. “I will be able to use my experience, both in office etiquette and in skill, and apply it to a job that I will have in the future.” Though the job itself is something Bish hasn’t experienced before, it is far from the only challenge facing her as she begins her European journey.
